We ate at Whetstone once during our stay at Hatchet. We shared a rib steak. The steak was perfectly cooked and seasoned well. The asparagus was also just right. The baked potatoes was not as it needed more time in the oven and it was barely warm. The waitress returned with garlic mashed potatoes and these were definitely better. We ate at several places around Moran and the Whetstone had the best food for dinner. The space is not very big so waiting might be be required at peak running times. read more

Although this was recommended by our campground and I can certainly see the potential of a great meal, my guests and I were sorely disappointed. All meals were served lukewarm with veggies actually cold. The elk had an amazing sauce; I can only imagine how great it would have been served hot (which you would expect for $40!) Our server tried by heating in microwave but was concerned that too much nuking would ruin it. My guests trout was also cold along with undercooked baked potatoes (also cold where butter didn't melt). My server was nice enough to take 10% off our meal. Agreesively mediocre food, which would have warranted a three-star rating elsewhere at very least... What makes this place one-star is the lousy table service and the "automatic" 18% tip. I mean, seriously, if this is a nice restaurant with quality food and welcoming waitress, the automatic 18% tip would be justified. My wife and I tried this place hoping for a good dinner. We were sat off in a corner while our waitress continued to serve a large table of about ten people. After taking our order, we both ordered spaghetti, we never saw her again. Our food finally arrived an hour later via another waitress. A couple sat at the next table over and received their meal within fifteen minutes, one had spaghetti and the other steak. Neither waitress ever came back to refresh our drinks. I finally had to go to the cashier where our original waitress was standing around to ask for and pay the bill. She did not remember seating us or taking our order. I paid for dinner and left an appropriate tip for the extremely lack of service. This place is obviously a locals drinking spot and not intended to serve you dinner in any reasonable amount of time. My family & I went to the Whetstone after checking into our room at the Hatchet resort. We all ordered the hatchet burgers WELL DONE. When they came out and we bit into them, we noticed they were a little pink, but since we were so hungry we decided to just deal with it, until we got closer to the middle. The meat was so red, there was still blood in it. It was even cold. We all stopped eating them in fear of getting worms. When we told our server (who was very kind to us the whole time) he called over his not-so-kind Manager. We explained to her the problem and asked if we could have new burgers that were actually cooked she responded in a snarky tone "you guys want new burgers even though you all ate the entire thing?" Even though we had only eaten 1/4 of them. We did get new burgers that were actually well done, and those were very good. It seemed like other guests were having problems with their meats being undercooked as well because we saw the manager take several burgers and plates of meat back to the kitchen after we sent ours back. I think this place needs a new cook and manager. read more

Overall, our experience with this restaurant was not good. We grabbed breakfast to go and sat down for dinner. Both times, the service was quite terrible. We first stopped here for dinner after a long day at Yellowstone. The server decided to seat us outside in the cold with mosquitoes everywhere despite seats being available inside. We all had a strong feeling they were treating those who look like they aren't from here differently than those who do, as those in the latter group were being seated inside throughout the night and had friendlier service. No complaints about the food, though. Despite the poor dinner service, we decided to come back here and grab breakfast to go, hoping for a better experience. However, we had the same problems as others reviewers did with the server/manager lady. She was very rude to us from the get go. We were told that our order would take 30 mins to be ready. So we waited in the car and when 30 mins passed, we went to check on the order only to be told that it would take another 30 mins. When we respectfully asked why, she rudely told us that it was a big order and there was only 1 cook. This was understandable, but she showed quite an attitude and didn't even apologize for the situation. She acted like she'd rather not have us there when people like us give them the most business. When we finally got our food, one of our family members kindly told her that we would've appreciated it if we'd been given more of an accurate time estimate and if they were too busy to take a big to go order, just say so. We would have rather been turned away than wait that long for our food. The lady got defensive and eventually told us to not be rude when she was the one who had an attitude the whole time. The reason I am not giving one star is because the food was pretty good for both meals. It's a shame that the poor service had ruined it for us. Despite the convenient location, I cannot recommend this place. read more

My husband and I were first time visitors for our 13th wedding anniversary. We had planned to spend several days dining in Jackson, however, after our first dining experience at the Whetstone, we spent the next several evenings dining there again. The atmosphere, friendly environment and outstanding staff were truly unparalleled to any other. The food was absolutely excellent, the presentation, remarkable and the attention to detail, superb. Our highest compliments to the executive chef and his team, to Brandy and to Chris. We live near Aspen, Colorado where the bar is set quite high. The Whetstone truly exceeded our expectations and we encourage anyone visiting the Jackson area to make the short drive to the Hatchet Resort for an unforgettable experience. read more

Cool place. Rustic western log cabin feel. Food was great. I had the bone in half chicken which was smoked, moist and delicious. The veggie medley was freshly cut and cooked to perfection. I enjoyed a very generous Manhattan with my meal. My daughter had the flat iron steak and her comment was how flavorful the steak was along with the fresh asparagus. The waiter was very helpful in his precise descriptions of the menu. Prices were more than fair. I bookmarked the location for a future visit to Jackson Hole. There was a nice fire pit roaring outside while some guest were sitting around the fire with a cocktail watching a spectacular sunset over the Tetons. read more

When we got there, there was a wait. Many of the tables are quite large so I asked the hostess/manager if we could sit at the end of one of them (there would still be several seats between us and any other party.) She replied she'd have to check and I said of course, that was fine. She asked a party of 6 at a table for 12 who immediately agreed and we ended up having a very nice conversation with them. This party did finally complain about the length of time they were waiting, The hostess was rather rude in responding to them, telling them they "weren't going to die from waiting." Their food did arrive shortly thereafter and all of them said that it cold. Ours took at least another 15-20 minutes. The vegetables were cold and the steak in the steak salad was very tough, but otherwise the food was ok -nothing great. I happened to notice a large Triple A sign on the wall so asked if they took Triple A, the waitress asked the manager who came over and said they didn't. When I politely asked about the sign, she said it was old (a decoration?). Meanwhile, at the next table a little girl sitting on a heavy wood booster seat fell backwards out of the unsecured booster and started crying loudly. When the manager came over to collect our bill I said to her, in confidence, that that really could've seriously hurt the child and they should consider using different booster seats or perhaps a seat belt. Then, when the waiter (yes the third person to serve us) dropped off our check he said, "Thanks, and thanks for being so rude to my manager." When I asked the hostess/manager what he was talking about I was told I had been rude from the start: for asking about the table, asking about Triple A and then mentioning about the booster seat because, "Parents should watch their children." Adding salt to the wound, there is a mandatory 18% tip that they won't delete. To be treated with such disrespect at the end of what had been a great vacation at a mediocre restaurant is just absurd!!! I have never written a review before, but then I have never been treated so poorly. read more
