Cute divey bar with incredibly friendly service and interesting menu. We didn't eat there but they have a fun drink menu. I just tried a local cerveza and my friend had a modified cocktail. A friend who is vegan, said that this was one of his favorite places because of the wide variety of vegan options. After seeing a show, we went here for dinner and I have to say I was very impressed not only with the large selection of items, but the portions were great size and the food was very, very good. I had the makeshift Reuben (again vegan) and it was outstanding! Just the right amount of sauerkraut and it had just a kick to it that made your mouth come to life. I don't know what it was that my friend had, but I took a bite of it and it was outstanding. I almost said since there were 2 1/2's let's switch and I get half of yours and you get half of mine. This was our first time at The Walrus for a show!!!! This small independent bar/venue was a surprise. Located in the older area of Jacksonville The Walrus has many Vegan food options and a variety of smoothies and beer. While waiting we got the Vegan hot dogs and I have to say this was my favorite hot dog I have ever had! The Kraut Rock hot dog had seasonings, pickles, kraut and Sriracha. One of those "hole in the walls" that's always a good time. I love how it's distributed.. you walk in and there's the bar.. to the left you find yourself with the Dj, dance floor and some seating. We ordered Mambo Sun, which was said to be a gingery Piña colada, I did ask for light on the ginger, but next time I think I'd like to try the full amount. DD opted for Orange Sky's. Two more Orange Sky's ordered altered to individual preferences: as simple as exchanging fruits and juices with preferred ones. This was not a problem, they were willing to alter in anyway asked. They all ended up being a refreshing, not overly sweet, good blend of flavors. Everyone was please with their choices. DD and I decided to try the Vegan Caprese panini. The Walrus is a real rarity - a vegan place that I can safely eat at! Because I have allergies to almond and coconut, I am often unable to eat at vegan places. However, The Walrus offers an oat milk option for everything and they're always willing to customize their drinks to make sure they're safe. It's a wonderful and lively place to hang out with lots of cool events and awesome decorations, and the bartenders are always friendly. The Walrus is one of the best, if not the best, vegan restaurant in Jacksonville. Their food is so tasty, with recipes that are carefully designed to be delicious. I have never had a meal here where the food was anything less than exceptionally good. The food was delicious again today. But the service, which is always excellent, was just dreadful today. I don't know what the problem was. I have never encountered this employee before, and I don't know what was wrong. I ordered my food online and paid online, with a 20% tip. 40 minutes later, sitting in my car in front of the restaurant, I called to see if my food was ready. He claimed that he had just received my online order that moment. I told him that it had been received by the restaurant at 1:10, and that I had the verification text to establish that. He claimed that because it was raining, there must've been a delay by the online service in sending the order to him. I was surprised and disappointed by his attitude. He was actually quite surly and had no apology or concern whatsoever that he had given such poor service. When I went in, I asked him if I could see the machine that notified him of my order. That made him angry. He showed it to me, and I pointed out to him that according to the machine, he received the order as soon as I placed it, 40 minutes before he says he received it. He pretty much lost his temper and started calling me names, including "Karen," and being sarcastic. I believe I may have figured out what the problem was, at least part of it. When I went in to get my sandwich and ask him to let me see the order on his machine, he was very engaged in conversation with a young woman. I believe it may have angered him that I questioned him in front of her. I also believe that being so heavily engaged in the conversation with her may be the reason that he did not notice my Internet order. I am hesitant to return to this restaurant. I definitely want to go when he's not there, so I can avoid having to deal with him again. I don't pay money, even for good food, to be treated badly. read more
