We had the best evening at The Verandah after an afternoon shopping in Watch Hill! Our server was exceptionally friendly and helped make some excellent recommendations. Our group of 4 tasted almost everything on the menu! The oysters and the lobster roll were perfect for dinner with a view of the water. The ambiance was incredible. The views were spectacular. The food was good, not great. We had oysters and they were served on a bed a melted ice. I brought it up to the manager (I believe) and he was kind and gracious, explaining the heat of the day. That said, it was obvious that the ice in plates were sitting for quite a while. The oysters were then "under water" when placed. For such a quality place I know they can do better. The drinks were good, though not very cold. We were looking for an ocean front or ocean view spot to have some lunch, and The Verandah was rated 4-stars, and had some positive reviews. We reserved a table and when we arrived, we selected valet parking, as that's the only parking offered ($5). The Verandah is located in the beautiful Ocean House in the upscale Watch Hill neighborhood. The Ocean House is a beautiful property and has won many awards, including Penta's "most overrated hotel in the country" award in 2016. Yes, it is on the pricey side, when we looked at staying here, the only rooms available were over $1,000 a night. Now back to the Verandah. We were seated promptly at a table which had a nice view of their wedding field and an ocean view in the distance. The veranda was very pleasant, though the tables were designed for hobbits, much too low for me to get my legs under the table. What's up with that, I thought this was a lunch venue? If it was simply a bar, I think the tables would have sufficed. It should be noted that they were setting up for a wedding, which resulted in noise from the truck unloading the tables and chairs to the nearby tent. The service was prompt and polite, and we ordered: * Grilled Cheese $18 * Tuna Crudo $28 * Glass Chardonnay * Glass Rose The grilled cheese was tasty and nicely prepared (then again it was $18 for two slices of bread, some cheese, and tomato). The crudo was mushy and flavorless, and the wasabe dressing was bland, I definitely would not order this again. Overall, the venue was pleasant, the food was fair, and the prices were high. Amazing venue, beautiful views. This is one of several restaurants at the Ocean House hotel. The menu in the Verandah is fairly small, mainly raw bar, seafood and some salads. We had a spinach artichoke dip appetizer (ok but could have been a bit warmer), and then 2 lobster rolls, one hot and one cold. We had spent the weekend eating lobster rolls in various other restaurants and these were our favourites, (especially the warm one with butter). The views from the hotel balcony are phenomenal. We had to book, so beware that it can be tough to get a slot. We sat overlooking the croquet lawn, which was entertaining. The rest of the hotel is beautiful. They will valet your car for $5 for up to 2 hours (it jumps up to $25 an hour after that). Dress nicely. Definitely worth a trip for a treat or a special meal. read more

This is my first review and I apologize for it not being a good one. First off, Verandah is a lovely setting with great views of LI Sound. Service was very good. Menu items are very very expensive (e.g., $48 for a cold or hot lobster roll, $24 for 1/2 dozen oysters. Would you like to add lobster salad to your $16 baby mixed greens salad? Then add $38 for a chilled lobster salad addition). We ordered 1/2 dozen oysters ($24), 1/2 dozen little neck clams ($18), and the smoked bluefish pate' ($25) to start. We received 1 dozen oysters (no clams). These oysters, while very good, were the smallest oysters that I have ever been served. The oysters were ~1 1/2" in size. Very small. The smoked bluefish pate' was excellent, though very pricy. My wife and DIl each ordered the Catch of the Day (striped bass) for $40. I ordered the Caesar salad which was indicated to come with croutons, parmesan cheese, and marinated white anchovies ($18). Each portion of striped bass was very small, maybe ~3-4 oz. each, and was over cooked. It appeared to be skillet sauteed and basted with butter. I tried both portions. The Caesar salad had a flavorless dressing (probably purchased), was sprinkled with a very small amount of parmesan cheese, and liberally dusted with bread crumbs. No croutons, and even more annoying absolutely no marinated anchovies. None. The bill, with drinks (3 glasses of wine, 1 mixed drink), dessert (1 dessert + 1 brewed coffee, which my wife designated as "weak"), and tip (25%), came to $330. My recommendation would be to go for the view and have a drink. Do not go for dinner. The management clearly does not care what comes out of the kitchen as long as it generates maximum revenue. This would have been a 1-star review except for the view, the service, and the smoked bluefish pate'. read more

Where do I start. I have been a fan of the Ocean House and its sister property the Weekapaug for years celebrating key birthdays and anniversary's and particularly enjoying the Veranda and the venue that is now Dalia on the back porch. I am also by background in the hospitality industry and work with luxury resorts and restaurants so I know my way around food and beverage operations at high end properties. On Sunday June 30 at 1 pm three of us had lunch. Although service was polite the execution was poor. Soup was to come with entrees but after 30 minutes came by itself. We wanted to have the grill cheese with the soup for a reason. The entrees came 20 minutes later. Sorry but the quality just was not up to par. My chicken sandwich was sliced deli chicken not even a breast? The bread overpowered the avocado smear not sliced and even Wendy's has better bacon portions. The grill cheese was burnt. The potato salad side was watery and inedible and the soup was basically thick stewed canned tomatoes that had an odd bitter taste. The Caesar Salad was actually very good and well portioned. We asked for Chamomile tea when the manager came by after a while he said he could not find any ....? He substituted another herbal tea. I would have thought that would have been taken off the check. Upon check out the bill does not need to be signed but you need to add a tip. I had to ask for a pen to be able to tip the staff. I know this was the day after a celebrity wedding however mid summer everyone should be able to manage a reasonably busy lunch with a limited menu when reservations are required giving management control over operations. I have canceled all my future reservations not because of one bad experience but because management has control over food quality and menu. In my opinion For a hotel that has in the past served quality food well as a 5 star experience the inability to provide a chicken breast sandwich or have edible sides is a deliberate choice to squeeze profits over quality. I do not have confidence that this change is not systematic throughout the food and beverage outlets at the resort. As a result am taking a break hoping feedback like this will result in a return to the standards set in the past. Please do not become the Grand Budapest Hotel a memory of grandeur elegance and quality. read more

First of all our waiter Romaine was exceptional. He is very professional with a great sense of humor. We started with the Spinach Dip and Crab Dip. Both excellent. Even better when you put a little of each on a the Pita chip. NE Clam Chowder was nice and thick with a nice portion of clams. Little bottle of Tabasco was a nice addition. The Braised Short Rib sandwich was excellent. The hot lobster was just average. Now for the adult beverages. Nice selection. We arrived for dinner and were seated at these tiny tables w tiny chairs. My husband isnt a large guy but he couldnt fit his knees under the table. My blue fin tuna was very disappointing, chopped into tiny bits and coated w soy. Like you have leftovers that dont taste good so you pour some heavy sauce over. Hamachi was better. My husband and I went to the Verandah yesterday for lunch. We had a reservation at 2:00PM. We had 6 raw oysters, a lettuce cups with mushrooms salad, a tomato, burratta salad with lobster and a smoked salmon salad. The service was excellent even tho we had to wait a half hour for the food to arrive between courses each time. One half hour after we left the restaurant, I started to have awful cramps in my stomach that got worse in the afternoon. By the time I got home around 4:30, I started to feel very nauseous and the pain in my stomach and lower back got more intense. By 7:00PM I had a full blown diarrhea, the worst I have ever had.. it lasted until 11:00PM. Worst experience ever!!!! I know it was the food in the restaurant because I only had oatmeal and tea at home in the morning. I am not an early eater. We call the restaurant to report the incident so the kitchen should know and we asked if anybody else had had a problem. No more food at the Ocean House restaurants for us. We had a late lunch at one of the restaurants at Ocean House Hotel called The Verandah. Beautiful outdoor setting with view of the ocean and a lovely breeze to keep us comfortable. Service was great and the waiter was friendly and attentive. Food was very good albeit small servings. Mahi-Mahi portion size was probably half what it should be. A side of rice would have been a nice accompaniment. The heirloom tomato salad was flavorful and went well with the addition of the lobster salad. The tables are oddly low which is an unusual experience but manageable if you eat carefully. Probably designed more for high tea. Prices were around $240 total for lunch for 2 but that's to be expected at a 5 star hotel. Plus you get the added priceless entertainment of watching people on the lawn below playing croquet all dressed in white. Apparently this is the summer uniform of the upper class and we missed the memo. Go inside to the art lined bathrooms and you may be greeted by the sounds of a harp being played nearby. The Dress Code @ The Verandah is Upscale Resort Casual. It is Open for Summer Dining. So you want to roll like a Multi Millionaire well even just for a few hours but you don't want it to cost you a fortune. Then You need to put The Verandah @ The Ocean House in Watch Hill Rhode Island on your Bucket List. They have Valet Parking here but there is Paid Public Parking below the Hotel & sometimes you can even Snag a Free 2 Hour Space on the street & walk up the hill. We went at an off time which was Great! They are open 11:30-8 PM in the Summer months. Check the website for their seasonal schedule. We went for a Late Lunch. They have a Light Menu for Lunch & serve sandwiches & have a Raw Bar selection too. We had A Salad & they were extremely courteous & accommodating & let us Split the Bowl of New England Clam Chowder. They brought out 2 mugs instead of one big bowl. We ordered Lobster Rolls one Hot & Buttered & one Cold with a Light amount of Mayo. It came with a Scoop of Cole Slaw & Cape Cod Potato Chips. Everything was Great. The Lobster Rolls were Excellent. Just siting back & relaxing enjoying lunch & soaking in that Spectacular view of the greenery, Croquet Area, The Hotel & the Ocean was Fantastic! After lunch we roamed through the magnificent beautifully restored Historic Hotel & The Spectacular Grounds this property is situated upon. The Beach is Reserved for Hotel Guests only. But you can meander through the greenery & flowers & see that Beautiful Atlantic Ocean & Little Narragansett Bay too. Yes Taylor Swift's multi million dollar home is right across the way.
