Visited: July 4, 2008 Being creatures of habit, we usually head over to Upper Crust on one of our 2-3 nights we spend in Bishop a few times a year. After a long day of hiking at 8-10,000 feet, a load of carbs and cold beer makes a body feel good! This past visit was sadly underwhelming. While the service has never been 100% stellar, the young servers didn't seem too happy to be working on the 4th of July and showed their dissatisfaction. The restaurant was barely half full when we arrived, but it took at least 5 minutes to get drink orders and 5 minutes more for all two drinks to be delivered. Food was served to the wrong people -- the only way we figured this out was by cutting into the calzones (here called strombolis) and excavating the interior. Food taste was good, although the sauce could have been spread out more to the edges on the pizzas to have made it more "pizza" and less "plain crust." 3 of our party got the strombolis and 2 got individual pizzas, with an order of garlic cheese bread to share. Ingredients were fresh and the beer selection interesting and served cold. All in all, will return here -- but we'll give the other pizza place down the street a chance next time, too. read more

Heading back from Mammoth after a day of boarding without eating lunch, my friends said we would stop in Bishop and look around for food. Thanks to my trusty yelp application, we found The Upper Crust Pizza Co. which had awesome reviews, so we stopped on in. I was initially hoping it would be the same Upper Crust as my favorite pizza in Boston, but as we walked in, the decor quickly made me realize this place was a lot more formal than Boston's. For 5 people, we were full off of $10 a person (tax/tip included) through an order of a large 3-topping pizza ($22.00) and two dozen hot wings ($15.50). I'd highly recommend the olive oil and fresh basil with your pizza...delicious! The wings were no Hooters wings; not super spicy, but still tasty...you could also argue though, that I was so hungry that anything would taste great. Friendly and attentive service...my water was always refilled quickly and the wings and pizza came out pretty quickly! If you're heading back down to LA from Mammoth, make the stop if you're in the mood for some pizza and wings. read more

I really had high hopes for thid place. We always go to pizza factory but decided to try something new. Only reason they got 2 stars was because the wings were good. We came here on a Saturday night and there is only 1 server and 1 busser. So we had to wait a long time to order our food. The wings were hot which was good but we asked for extra ranch (It comes with a tiny cup) and they charged us $2.50!!!! .50 sure...but 2.50! For ranch is absurd!!!!!! You can buy a whole bottle in the grocery store for that price! Our drinks, which were unlimited refills, cost 2.50. When I brought this up to the server, all I got was, this is what we have to do. Unacceptable. This is a pizza place that serves wings and pizza and charges for that?! It makes my blood boil. Now pizza.... ordered the Sierra wave. It has veggies on it. But had no sauce and kittle to no cheese. When I brought this up to the server, he said this is what they do because the veggies have so much water. I have ordered veggie pizzas many times, and this has never been a problem. If pizza hut can do it, why can't you? Back to the ranch thing.... spoke to the manager and his response was basically, I don't set the prices so too bad you don't like it. Didn't try to rectify the situation, just like the server. I ordered a thick crust pizza, and maybe I shouldn't have. The dough at first seemed bread-like and not as dense as good pizza dough. It seemed to get "dough-ier" (meaning like un-baked dough) as I ate. Just didn't enjoy it. Also, the dough had a pattern on the cooked bottom that made it look pre-fabricated. I had one of their specialty pizzas - the Mount Tom - which included sausage, onion and jalapeno. Fresh jalapeno has a bright green color to it and it's a little firm in consistency. The jalapeno on my Mount Tom was pale green and soft in consistency. I'm assuming it came from a can. The sausage didn't have much flavor. Tasted low grade to me. On a positive note, the servers were very attentive and nice. The beer was very reasonably priced; I got a craft brew for (I believe) $2.95. That said, I didn't finish my pizza and left disappointed. read more

This is the other place I'll dine at if I'm late getting back from fishing... After hiking the fishing trails all day, this place, by far, is the best pizza place to dine at. They have other Italian dishes, but I come here for the pizza. The pizza is not the the thick crust type or very thin ones either. Plain and simple, the crust, the various toppings (they use good quality cheese), and price makes this a good value to dine at. The server sat us right away, took our order and readily filled our water glasses all the time (since I use a lot of crushed red pepper on my slices!) Bishop, CA is our favorite stomping ground on the way to Mammoth from L.A. because of all the "antique-y" stores and shops, you feel like you jumped 20 years back in time. Upper Crust is next door to Vegabond (where we were spending the night) so it only made sense to walk next door and try this spot out. Our group of 4 shared 1 large "7 Cecil" pizza & 1 Pitcher of Mammoth Mtn Ale - Total Spent $45 Pizza - 4.5 stars Dough is delicious, chewy and perfectly crispy. Toppings on the Cecil included tomatoes, cheese, artichokes and Canadian bacon all of which went fabulously together. Mammoth Mountain Ale - 5 stars Served in icy cold mugs! Perfection. Not too ale-y at all. Very refreshing and crisp. "Thomas" our server looked like he belonged on a Disney show somewhere as the "hot" high school jock. My gf's and I (25-35 yrs old) kept giggling and made fools of ourselves but seriously, somebody cut this guy a deal. He was like our Zack Effron for the night! Ha. We picked this placed based on the close proximity to our hotel, which was a quick 5 minute walk down the street. We were promptly seated, and our waiter, Vicente, was very attentive in getting our order. After a full day on the slopes, pizza sounded perfect. We started off the meal with the mozzarella sticks (1 dozen is a small order?). They were very tasty with both ranch and marinara dipping sauce options. My husband and I got a medium Cecil 7 pizza, which has Canadian bacon, artichokes, and tomatoes. It was fantastic and the crust was superb, as others have also stated. The place was very popular that evening, and we saw several groups waiting for tables to open. I dig this place . Good pizza , they have beer and wings . If you stop in when they are serving their "seafood bisque" soup , GET IT! It is divine ! Never had anything like it.
