Far better than some of the reviews suggest. Any review that talks about "the Moose" is discussing an older establishment with different owners in the same location. Not sure how that happened on Yelp, but there it is. Now, on to the review The Bierhaus is a little too kitschy as far as décor goes. However, the food is good, the beer is cold, and the staff is nice Went with a friend and I had the Lacrosse brat and fries, he had the German Brat and German Potato salad. The brats were both well cooked (and juicy). They were definitely as different from each other as the menu listed them - both good. Fries were fine, not super special, but hot and fresh. And a large amount. The german potato salad was good. They may or may not make it onsite, but in any case it was a good example of the warm, tangy concoction that it is. The only miss was the brat buns - they seemed a little stale, or perhaps had been kept unwrapped in a warming tray a little long and they had dried out. Definitely a miss. Bier selection is not Essen Haus quantity, but fine. About 8 german biers on tap, and about the same of american beers if you have to have that lite beer (But why?) Coming from someone who has worked in the service industry before with multiple restaurants, including an actual German restaurant. Staff: they were kind and maybe trying. She was not attentive at all. It took a long time for drinks, however she did tell us the bar was backed up. She forgot silverware and only brought 2 for the table of 3. The only napkins were the two that came with the silverware. She also brought two salt shakers to the table and no pepper. She did acknowledge that she made that mistake. A part from when she brought the food out and we asked for what we needed she did not come to the table. Again she personally seemed nice, however the service was poor. Food: 10/10 do not recommend. Everything had to of been sitting out for a while before being brought to the table. The cheese for the pretzel (came out with food) had a dry layer on top. The fries for everyone were hard and cold. The chicken schnitzel was a deep fried piece of chicken... you can google how it should be, this was not it. The spatzle had no taste. Drinks: we ordered water and a soda. That had no issue. We ordered two different old fashioned's. When the server brought them out she didn't tell us which was which and neither drink had ice. We were going to ask her questions but she didn't come back to the table for at least 20 minutes. By that time we asked for ice to put in the drinks, she gave us ice in a warm glass from the bar. The drink itself was okay. Ambiance/bill: you could tell this space is used for something else and the German theme really is out of place. Overall it did look clean, but the floor did seem sticky. When the bill came the name of the business on the receipt was "twisted moose"... Also we were expecting one price, but when the card was run it was a greater price. We asked the hostess what this was about and there was a "3% card fee" she also said, "we get this question a lot and should maybe add that". We checked, it was a 4% card fee and yes I agree it should be listed on the receipt. Overall: two side notes - it really was not that busy that the amount of servers they had on staff couldn't provide better service. If they can't do it then management should step in and acknowledge that there should be a wait. There was a table right next to us and the waited to pay their bill for at least 30 minutes and they were standing waiting for a good portion of the time. Finally they just left cash on the table and walked out. No one came to assist them and the hostess looked confused when she saw them walk out. I truly would not recommend this place and the stars should be 0 out of 5. I apologize for no pictures because that would bring the whole review to light. I'd hoped for better from this tavern along the riverside in downtown LaCrosse but it wasn't to be. I very occasionally allow myself the heart attack on a plate that Poutine, by its very nature, can be. Here the fries were great, the cheese curds an interesting topping but the whole thing was spoiled by the limp, too salty and greasy gravy. Otherwise, my cheeseburger was very ordinary...running a far second to the Culver's butterburger being served within a few miles. Even the iced tea here tasted watered down, like perhaps they ran out of enough mix? All served by a young lady who didn't seem to understand how much we disliked the poutine and left it on the table long after she cleaned everything else off. The Twisted Moose was.. an experience. We stumbled over there after having drinks at a couple of other local bars in the area, and were immediately shocked at how many people were there, since it sounded kind of quiet from the street. I can't comment on the food or food service, since I was there after it seems to have converted into a full-on bar. There were a couple of older ladies dancing in the corner, but the majority of patrons were huddled around the bar. We ordered three drinks, all the same (vodka tonics), and got three vodka sodas instead. Not a big deal, we drank them anyway, but the bartender seemed uninterested in taking our order and clearly wasn't really paying attention. We moved on to the bar attached to the Moose after this one drink, nobody was overly impressed. I'll say, though, that the decor in this place is legitimately hilarious. It's all more or less hunting lodge themed and event the bar stools are covered in flannel! TLDR; totally missable, there's better places within a stone's throw. read more

I was here last night enjoying my 4th of July. I normally like to come here, however, two male employees completely ruined my experience towards the end of the night. The DJ called last call which means it's the last chance to get a drink and finish it. Being in the service industry, I quickly was finishing the drink I already had to leave. However, two employees (looked like a bouncer and maybe a bar back) approached me 1 min after last call was called and demanded that I go towards the door otherwise they would take the drink out of my hand. They shouldn't be throwing people out and threatening them after announcing another chance to get your last drinks just because they're in a rush to clock out. It was incredibly disrespectful and unprofessional. The manager/owner should think twice about who they hire and teach them to be nice to all guests because that behavior is unacceptable. read more

What a great visit I had at "The Moose". I have to share how awesome it was. Just walking in you're greeted with such a fun and lively environment. There's so much to see. Such a cool vibe and atmosphere. The Hostesses were all smiles, wearing silly moose antler crowns and in unison said: "Welcome to the Twisted Moose!" I immediately laughed and already felt at home. My server was friendly and great suggestions for what to try. Everything looked so good, I had trouble deciding on what I should try. She pointed out the specials and I decided on the Ultimate Poutine, a cup of the Beer Cheese soup, and a traditional Pasty. Everything was delicious! The soup had amazing flavor and I couldn't stop once it was set down in front of me. Next came the poutine. The fries were hot, the curds were melted, and the gravy was packed with flavor. Just awesome. Finally, the Pasty was on point! I grew up in the UP, so this is a staple of our home meals. This is a hard one to get correct. Let me tell you, this was Perfect. So delicious. I just can't say enough. So anyway, I felt the need to say how great everything was. The service, the atmosphere (music was great!), the food was so good, and even the Manager stopped by to see how everything was (Lindsay). I have NEVER been more mistreated at an establishment in my life. I was visiting friends at UW-La Crosse and we decided to go downtown to have a good time at a local establishment. When we walked into the bar we were met with incredibly rude service from the beginning. To top off the evening, my best friend and I were aggressively thrown out of this bar for simply going to the restroom. My friend was forcefully grabbed by the arm as I was shoved in front of them, all the while being screamed at to "Get the fuck out!". As a member of the LGBTQ+ community I am appalled that this is how this situation was handled and I feel VERY uncomfortable that this is the way this situation was handled. read more

I just ordered delivery from The Twisted Moose. What was billed an an authentic UP pasty was anything but. Where do I start? The crust was chewy, underdone and skimpy and had obviously spent time under a broiler. The vegetables -- potato and rutabaga -- were cut in chunks and raw rather than diced. The meat was under seasoned. And, to top it off, the gravy and coleslaw promised in the menu failed to appear. I've been to the UP and the UK and I know what a pasty is supposed to be. This ain't it. Ill start off by saying the burger I experienced at the Twisted Moose has made me a patron for as long as they continue to keep the bar they set my expectations at high. I say "experienced" because that buger was an absolute delight for the senses. I, like so many, had written the location off after timeless disappointments with the food and atmosphere, by my how times have changed. Its been a year or so since ive been in, and had not intended to change that until I walked past the other day and saw and smelled a burger that a customer was about to eat. The restaurant had its front sliding doors opened to take in the sunshine, but in doing so it gave passersbys access to all that was within. I decided to give it a go as the burger's aroma grabbed me. I was greeted by a very sweet server, Lydia. She sat me and i immediately ordered an all american, basically a bacon burger, and fries. Working downtown, my time is limited for lunch, so i was very happy and impressed to see my lunch arrive less than 10 minutes later. Looking around, there was several tables so that wasnt a factor. This was a good sign. Let me just say that my burger looked and smelled even better then the one that had lured me in. Combine that with the fries and i was in heaven, and then, to my delight, i took a bite. The burger was cooked to perfection, juicy and delicious. The bacon was crip and flavorful. The bun was toasted, and the veg was all crip as well. The fries....probably the best in town. I inquired what changes had occured and i was informed the moose had a new owner as of last year and there had been many things that were altered, the menu just one of them. Well, color me impressed. The worst bar in all of La Crosse. I'm a senior at UWL and been to many better bars/restaurants in the downtown area. The night staff is extremely rude and offensive, as well as sexist and racist in multiple instances i"ve personally witnessed, in the past and especially this night. They intentionally antagonize bar patrons, myself included just for asking about the wait to get in, and are extremely subjective and combative with patrons. Cold sweet potato fries, JD BBQ sauce taste closer to overt booze, beers delivered excessively late- I could see if the cook was holding up the orders with a plethora of orders, but that doesn't excuse the late service or the lack of apology and acknowledging the poor service. I asked Lydia-a server that came up to the bar next to me if there was a manager there, she asked why and I said something akin to "all these dirty glasses piled up on the bar, they're okay with that?" She told us to sit wherever and then it took over 15 minutes for another server to even come over, despite them not being overly busy and having enough time to sit on their phones. They then took our drink and food orders and it took another 10 minutes just for us to get our drinks. My friend didn't like her drink and it took them until after we were done eating to ask if everything was tasting ok. Ordered a different beer...10 min later she says they are out of that beer! Settled for a bottle of Coors light. Cheese curds were gross. Huge blobs of beer batter-very greasy. Don't know why we ate more than one, except that they cost 9 bucks and was needing something to tie us over til dinner later. Regret eating them-suffering from a huge gut ache now. read more
