Went back another time. Still no bread or salad, knew that going in. The very expensive scallop pasta dish came with a whopping 3 quarter size scallops, one of them was nearly split in half and tough. No Bloody Mary at the bar, and really, why have a table directly, like 2 feet from right in front of the bathroom door. Lastly, the silverware had dishwasher stains, took all of 1 second to polish that off with my napkin. Hopefully the new ownership will improve this place, because they do have the ability to make good food. read more

Long story but I had intended to eat at a different restaurant. I was coming from out of town and inadvertently put in Restore Public House instead of the other restaurant, in my GPS. I was pressed for time so that's why I originally had meant the other place. I'd even made a reservation so when I arrived and looked at the menu I was feeling like I made a mistake. But I didn't have much time. The ambiance is really cool & had a European feel. From host to the waitress all staff were super friendly. I also realized I ordered the NY strip instead of the sirloin. It's a big price difference & she offered for me to change it. Absolutely not! That was my own exhaustion, not paying attention (again!) Well clearly I was meant to be eating this meal. One of the best steaks, prepared to perfect temperature. The crispy fingerling potatoes were so good!! And the grilled asparagus was grilled to perfection! Our first time coming here, and I have to say I wasn't impressed. The inside is nice and small, but I have a couple of issues with my experience. The first issue is the fact that the food wasn't the greatest. The steak I ordered was VERY underseasoned, like no salt, and salt can do wonders sometimes. I asked for medium-well and basically got medium rare. Also, the charred asparagus was bland and cold. The best thing were the potatoes. The other thing is that my entree was over 35 bucks, WHY? Even if this place is modernized, it is across from UWL, a hole in the wall, basically. How can you justify such a high price for such low quality? Was our first experience and the food was overall very good I had the sirloin and wife had the pork chop. I saw a post a few days prior of a mushroom pasta that was not on menu that attracted me to go. Most likely the special for that night and not the night we were there so understand. Regardless food was good, wish they offer a couple appetizers and a soup/salad with meal. Yes meal came with a vegetable but soup/salads I guess are standard these days especially with the price pint they are at Lastly not offering glasses of wine only bottles at 40-70/each was more than we wanted to spend. Great place for dinner. I made a reservation on their website. They have outdoor seating in ingloos and indoor seating physically distanced. There was a small cocktail list with a few winter options. I decided on a regular margarita and it had a smoky flavor different but delicious. They have a farm to table concept. I started with the Brussels sprouts. I like this dish universally, and I can say this place to date has the tastiest I've had. I decided to have the burger as my entree. Juicy and yummy. I am not the biggest fan of steak fries but they're definitely different being duck fat fries. I did not try dessert, but I will definitely be going back. Staff is also excellent. Cute little casual neighborhood restaurant. We went in for an early dinner on a Sunday night. We didn't have reservations but we were seated promptly. The decor and dining atmosphere was very inviting and warm. We ordered the burger (which came with duck fat fries) and the fried chicken (which came with cheddar grits and smothered greens). The burger was tasty but was structurally fragile. The patties fell apart with each bite. The fries were especially delicious, probably because they fried them in duck fat. The fried chicken was nicely cooked, crispy, and well seasoned. Personally, I prefer dark meat, but my order came with two fried chicken breasts. The grits were cheesy, creamy, and rich. The greens were good too, but they were a tad sweet for me. The food took longer to come out than I expected, but the service was friendly. Once, when I was a kid, I went fishing with my dad. It was a glorious day. Blue sky, gentle breeze, boat rocking gently, warm sun. It was a perfect set up...until I dropped my oar in the water and couldn't reach it. No matter how perfect everything else was, I was now, literally, up the river without a paddle. That's how I felt about my Public House experience. Their Yelp menu needs updated. I had just flown into LaCrosse from Ohio and was ready for a good meal before I settled into my hotel. Using their Yelp menu I planned my meal carefully and called it in only to be told that menu was old. She was super kind and directed me to go to the website. I did. That menu was completely different but as amazing as the old menu. Simple, straight forward, fresh elevated food. I ordered butter poached yellow beets with herbed goat cheese, micro greens, and pepitas, then halibut with quinoa and English peas. I pulled up, called in and they ran the food out. So easy! I got to the hotel, unloaded all my stuff, got to my room, arranged everything in my weird 'I travel a lot and have habits' way, freshened up, threw on pajamas (long day), sat down and got the food out. Here's where the paddle drops into the water. No utensils or napkins. Now, I have a thing about too many condiments, plastic wrap utensils and things like that. I try not use that stuff as much as possible because I feel like it's ecologically a mess. I usually carry a bamboo utensil set but it was in a different bag at home. Sigh. It's a simple thing and seriously, go ahead and say it...I can take it, "Kim, shut up. Just go get a fork." But you're missing the point. It's the small things people. Anyway, the most important part is this. The food was insanely delicious. My fish was to die for. Milky white, flaky fish with a beautiful lime based sear on the outside. It was nestled Into a perfectly cooked bed of seasoned quinoa with big bright peas mixed in. The beets...well, I'll be trying to recreate that dish at home. The creamy goat cheese with the tender beets was a match made in heaven. I would crawl, swim, or hand paddle my way through croc infested waters to eat that food again. 5 star food - minus 1 star for the fork. Sorry no pics. I used to go to The Mint for breakfast all the time. I was excited that this place reopened as Restore Public House. On my first visit to RPH for brunch I had eggs, toast, coffee, hashbrowns, and bacon. Came to slightly-north-of-$20 with tax and tip. Which is pretty pricey by local standards. (Maybe this is why the place was empty.) The main culprit was the $7 (!!!) coffee. For $20+ I can get breakfast-for-two at The Greengrass Cafe across the street. Of course, RPH can set their prices however they want. And all of us cheapskates can (and will) choose to dine elsewhere. read more

I went for Sunday brunch (starts at 9am). It was good, but it's pretty hard to mess up eggs, toast and hash browns. If you're veggie they have one avocado option, but that's it. I asked for no bacon and they gave me extra hashbrowns, so they are accommodating. It's definitely clear that the service still needs to be ironed out. Just little things like not asking if we needed extra condiments (Jam, hot sauce, etc) when the food was presented. I'm sure this will be worked out. The servers were very friendly and accommodating. Also, if you want coffee be prepared to spend $7 on a full French press. No single cup option. read more

Love this place. It has become our go to for a nice dinner and cocktail. It's also where we love taking out of towners. Atmosphere is fantastic, cozy, subtle, chic. Food is really strong! Farm to table, rotating menu based on seasonable food and local products. Even the dishes that were not my favorite or not in my taste are still quality! We eat very veggie forward and they always have really great veg dishes on the menu and they accommodate all types of eating limitations. They also make the BEST martini I have had in town. We have probably been a dozen times in the last year, service is always great and we always feel really welcomed! Kind of place where the host, manager, and servers remembers you and ask how you are (and mean it). I just don't think you can go wrong. We were stopping in Lacrosse, Wisconsin at the end of a long road trip home to Chicago and found this gem minutes from our hotel. This is a farm-to-table restaurant, so everything was fresh and lovely. Who knew parsnips cooked with turmeric would be such an elegant starter? We shared a ribeye steak with a wine reduction that was cooked to perfection. There were too many delicious dessert options to choose from - so we didn't! We just ordered extra! This was our first time and it was very good. First, they take online reservations, which in this town is hard to find but highly appreciated. For appetizers we had the Bread & Bolognese; Don't be turned off by the reference to bologna or when the server calls it a "meat spread" (really need a better term); instead eat this and maybe a second order. It is absolutely delicious yet simple. It harkens back to childhood days, but had a sophisticated spin. It was so good we were scraping the serving dish for the last bits of the spread. We also had the avocado salad. My wife didn't care for the romaine hearts, but I thought they added great crunch. The dressing was spot on. For the main course my wife had the chicken which was fabulous and I had the pork chop. The chop was grilled to perfection and delicious. The polenta-like side was also creamy and great. I'd say the only downsides were that the server was loud and bit pushy. You don't need much volume given the size of the place. And she kept pushing the wine, but then took the wine menu; go figure. I was the guest of a friend tonight, and I have to say that the meal blew me away. She had pre-ordered an appetizer for everyone to share, so that was on the table when I arrived: a little cloud of deliciousness. It was huge... Bigger than a walnut...and One of the other guests called it gnocchi, but it certainly wasn't like anything I've had before. It was stuffed with an extremely light, whipped creamy cheese, I guess. And then bathed in a tomato based sauce. (I really need to start reading the menus better... I would be of more use to you if I knew what was actually in these offerings! just take my word for it: it tasted really good! OK, so I talk more than I read, especially when I am with this group of friends, so I let one of my other friends order for us, and we split three appetizers instead of ordering an entrée. All three were good, but the carrots were by far the most delicious! Who knew? I wish I had taken a picture... There were probably four4-inch carrots, That were tender and delicious, And somehow were charred on both ends. Then these carrots were covered with fresh herbs and some kind of cheese that look like feta but wasn't and then just a taste of some magical sauce. The dish was completed with three or four pieces of something that was deep-fried... I never did figure out what that was. Again, just trust me that it was good. Our second option was six "crab Rangoon" pieces that were served with a little ramekin of a sweet dipping sauce. I could taste real crab, and no cream cheese or fake crab was in sight. They were good but not great. Our last choice was a peach tart... Savory mix of tomatoes and peaches spread over bread and layered on top of a whipped cheesy layer. Again, good but not serious competition for the carrots. Our server was friendly and competent. Her explanation of some of the dishes was a little off-base, but I am a pretty strong foodie, so most people would not realize the issues with her descriptions. She did a great job of keeping us happy. The restaurant is minuscule, And several good restaurants have not been able to maintain is strong enough following in such a small space, so I wish Stephen Schaller well. The outdoor tables were almost full by the time we left... Of course, tonight was a perfect night with low humidity and few bugs... Something we haven't seen a lot of this year. I'm glad to see a new place --UPDATE--- Just home from ANOTHER great meal! Our server, Jorie, added to the great experience. The low humidity and 72 degree temperature allowed us to eat out on their patio. I NEEDED to order the gnocchi and the carrots again-- and I will CONTINUE to order those two items until they disappear from the menu...they are PERFECT! My husband helped me with those two apps, PLUS ordered delicious sourdough bread(with Eurooean-style butter) AND the scallop entree. He was as enthusiastic about the food as I am! No room left for the chocolate or the sweet corn ice cream. Hmmm... I need to give them another star...! read more

Very disappointed. We were there for 2 hours and I was served water (not cold) and glass is wine. I had to request for more water twice, to which I never received. There were only 5 other people in the restaurant inside and 2 outside. Numerous employees sitting around. Ordered an app and was very disappointed. Lacked depth and quality. So glad I waited to see how the app was before we decided to have dinner there. We will never go back. So sad and wish Kate's on State was still there.
