im not the type to complain, but.... lunch time experience,, Lasagna was actually cool in the center ,,,, the veggies in my Garlic Butter Vermicelli Pasta with veggies and grilled chicken tasted terrible like they came from frozen plastic bag and my whole plate was not served hot,, the grilled chicken tasted good,, .. the garlic bread is dipped/submerged in butter,(just way to much garlic butter) the fish sandwich was just a piece of fish on a piece of bread and a small condiment container of tarter sauce our previous visit wasnt anything to brag about either.. sorry, but most likely wont be back ,, visits in the past were pleasant, something has changed , maybe something to do with the addition , cooks ?? read more

Quaint and delicious while also being very decently priced! $7 alcoholic drinks is always a win for me. The bartender was super nice and had great suggestions. I ordered the ribeye since it came with a soup or salad ANNNNDDD potatoes or veggies. I opted for the French onion soup and some veggies. Holy moly, the cheese on that soup is no joke! It was a delicious soup but it did lack in onions (maybe because it was a small bowl that none got scooped up into it?). I ordered my ribeye medium rare and it came a perfect medium rare. The ribeye itself was of the thinner variety so don't expect a thick steakhouse ribeye. It was still really good though especially because it was so much food for under $30! The turtle cheesecake was TO DIE FOR! Ughhhh I'm a sucker for some caramel and chocolate in a cheesecake. I wish I lived here because I would be a regular for sure. read more

We were desperate for breakfast after a morning of hiking. We walked in and were seated quickly by friendly and attentive staff. The restaurant is definitely outdated, but coincidentally they were closing the following day for a month to remodel. Unfortunately our lovely server told us that breakfast was over for the day. It was noon on a Sunday, but we were a bit disappointed. Either way we started with some cheese curds- half pepper jack/half cheddar. These were outstanding and exactly what I was trying to explain to my boyfriend! The big fresh gooey cheese balls I remember from my college days in Wisconsin. DELICIOUS and huge portion! For our meals we ordered the taco salad and the French onion burger. Both were fine, nothing we'd order again. Our server was kind and offered a free slice of turtle cheesecake for my boyfriend's birthday which was delicious as well. Overall, a cute little family owned place that could use a facelift. Please bring back breakfast! Next time we're in La Crosse we'll be back to check out the remodel. read more

Heard nothing but good stuff and on our day off, we decided to dine at the Hungry Peddler for lunch. We arrived around 12:30p and it was packed. We waited about 20-30 min before we got a seat. Which was fine since we didn't have a plan B and really had been waiting to try them out. Staffs are friendly and very attentive. Menu is quite large and offers a good variety. I got the beef tenderloin tips with a house salad and veggies. My husband got the cod with slaw and fries. Everything was cooked to perfection. Seasoned properly and came out in a timely manner. It's a cute, vintage looking building with a calm atmosphere. Will definitely have to go during dinner hours for some drinks and more fish fry (2nd best fish fry in lax) read more

This is a great place for a comfort food meal in the La Crosse area! The service was exceptionally friendly, genuine in their recommendations, yet never overly pushy. The experience was a disappointment. We went there on Mother's Day. I ordered the "special" It was one of the top 3 worst meals I have ever received at any establishment in the area. The pork chops were dry, zero juice, zero flavor and tough. Perhaps they are made in big batches and stuck under a lamp? I tried three times to cut them with a knife, I finally gave up and tore a piece off. I tried to chew it. The asparagus was long pieces that looked nice in presentation. The problem was it was almost all stalk. I couldn't cut that either. I picked that up with my fingers the top stems (the tender edible tops) as well. I was hungry. What a mess. The cook tossed a bake potato and it was not even sliced into. I turned and put the entire plate at the table behind me. The kids meal was huge. 5 good chicken strips and half a plate of undercooked french fries. To be fair, my foster granddaughter was not sitting still. We walked around to hold her attention, just in time to hear trouble behind the bar. One server refusing to break an egg behind the bar, repeating herself 3 times in a negative tone, saying she would bring it from home. I view that as tacky, I was a customer within earshot. My family did not complain about their food. They got boxes for leftovers. My son's girlfriend offered to box mine. I took it home, to be courteous, but had to throw it away. They apologized after we left as it was a terrible choice for Mother's Day. I highly doubt that anyone will read this post, I'm not sure if anyone cares. I judge a pub-style restaurant on their fries and these fries were on point! Burgers and sandwiches were all great as well and I enjoyed the house beer! Service, though, was the best. Our waitress was super kind to my hangry family (lol... we were hangry amongst ourselves, not with the waitress!). She gave good recommendations, too. Ambience was lovely. My girlfriend and I decided to go to Hungry Peddler for Valentines Day. When we got there, they said it would be about a 1 hour wait, and it was, but while waiting we were offered drinks which was nice. Once sat down, we could tell the waitresses were pretty busy. They still got to our table to take our order very quickly. We both got the pork chops, french onion soup, and potatoes. The soup came out only a couple minutes later and tasted great. The wait for the pork chops was about a normal wait time, and they tasted AMAZING, so juicy and yummy. Paula was our waitress and she was awesome! She checked on us and other tables around us a few times even though they were so busy this night. We didn't have any leftovers, but we did see Paula drawing cute pictures of food with faces on leftover boxes when giving them to customers! Overall, the food was awesome, the workers were so nice, and it was a great place to go out to eat for Valentines Day. Will definitely be back! read more

This is an awesome place. I love the history and the decor. This is my mother-in-law's favorite restaurant so we seem to go there every time we come to visit usually for breakfast on either Sunday, Saturday or Sunday try the prime rib hash. It is awesome and I like the fact they have the lighter side, which is the same breakfast only smaller portions being a big fellow. I don't need all that food. read more

Took my Dad to breakfast after a major medical procedure. Service was amazing, the coffee came around regularly and the food was served promptly. My steak was perfectly prepared and I was able to order a 4oz piece which is perfect for me. My Dad was so happy and it was a relaxing way to move past a stressful time for both of us. Perfect fall morning breakfast stop. We waited for about five minutes and sat in a spacious little spot . We loved the eggs Benedict's and the bacon omelette. Hadn't been here in awhile. You know it's good because you have to wait for a table in the doorway...and you do that. Our food was very good but the staff was outstanding. Wow, what an awesome restaurant in an old house off the main street in La Crosse. I loved the vintage vibe & dark paneled walls. The complimentary garlic toast so brought back memories of my grandma. My husband had the pork chops for dinner & I chose the fried shrimp. Both were perfectly cooked, and came with soup or salad & a potato side. The fact that their French onion soup wasn't even an upcharge was amazing! I wish they offered either mashed or au gratin, as every option they did have was fried/ greasy. I ordered the onion soup. It was good but it only had one piece of onion in it. The rest of it was just broth and of course two little pieces of bread and the cheese. It was tasty but it wasn't the best. Then I ordered the angel pasta with the vegetables with the California vegetables and the California vegetables. I would have gone to Walmart. That's what they look like. Get them out of the bag, steam them and throw them on top of The tasteless pasta. It was no taste to the pasta at all. It said it came with garlic. They had sat groups of 3 at the larger, round tables, and groups of 2 at tables for 4. They couldn't put 2 tables together due to fire codes. Besides that issue, everything else was great. Disappointed with the changes in food quality and presentation-- we haven't been there in several years but quickly noticed the lack of the garlic toast, dinner rolls and relish tray. The medium rare ribeye I had was overly fatty and stringy. I thought adding the onions and mushrooms would be nice but both were overcooked and tasted burnt-- my wife felt similar with her tenderloin tips -- Hungry Peddler was a favorite in our "rotation" for many years prior to COVID -- the ambiance is still sorta there and the service was OK but nothing more. I wasn't sure about this place from the outside. We went on a Friday night and had all you can eat Fish or/and Chicken. It was fish (cod) was very good then roasted chicken was too. The inside was nice decor and clean. The waitress were very friendly and helpful. I had a alcoholic drink and she was right on it when I needed another one. They also gave us small pitcher of water. I heard their chili is very good but wasn't in the mood to try has it was a very HOT day. I gave it a 4 out of 5 because there is always room for improvement. We specifically came in on a Friday for an early dinner to try their alI-you-can-eat fish special. I have to say, I really dig the old school decor in the dining area, it was a little dark inside, but it was still cozy and welcoming. Shortly after we were seated, a basket of bread, crackers, and vegetables were placed on our table. Our meal came with coleslaw and baked potato or french fries. We first started our meal with the fried cod, which was fried to order, tender, and perfectly cooked. Then for our second round we decided to try the broiled cod. The flavor of the broiled fish was okay, however, it was overcooked and came out lukewarm. Needless to say, the broiled fish was not my favorite, therefore we continued our meal by ordering more fried fish. Each time we ordered, our fish came out piping hot and freshly fried. I also recommend trying their house beer, Peddle Brau, which is specially made for the restaurant by Capital Brewery. Service was fantastic. We were greeted and seated right away. Our server was very friendly, attentive, and regularly checked in on us. They have their own parking lot in the rear but it will fill up fast during peak meal times. With this restaurant's long history, hearty food portions, affordable prices, and great service, I can definitely see the appeal and why they've lasted this long. Did you notice all the good reviews are in 2020? We have been going there for years and it was fantastic until it wasn't. Went there this week and a lot of things have changed. Smaller portions, higher prices, no longer a relish tray or dinner rolls. I got the bacon wrapped scallops and got 4 tiny ones. All you could see was the bacon. I knew that La Crosse would have a decent amount of greasy spoon dinners. Today is New Year's Day so a few other places were closed. However, the Hungry Peddler was open. Interestingly, while I was at Breakfast Club the day before, someone recommended this place. This was probably the best advice I've gotten in a while lol. I assumed when I arrived that the wait was due to them being one of the few restaurants open today. The wait was actually because the food was amazing. I ordered a cheese omelette with sausage, bacon, green peppers, and onions. I also subbed the American cheese for cheddar. She asked me if I wanted sausage links or patty in my omelette and I was flattered to have the option. I chose wheat toast and hash browns and was asked if I wanted to add cheese or onions to my hash browns. Knowing I had a flight out of La Crosse in an hour, I decided to skip the cheese on the hash browns. The portion size was insane. The menu said it was a three egg omelette which is usually what I make at home but wow. The amount of hash browns I received had to be equal to several potatoes. I would travel to La Crosse just to eat here again. Hands down 10/10. Well worth the trip read more

The service was the impeccable by San Francisco standards! (SF are big on 5 star service!) The food was flawless. It was a large party and all the food was well received. I worked under the ownership of Kevin Arnold for the majority of my teenage years and early 20s, at the time it was a great vibe, and an over all good management, since bought by A.B (owner of mirage bar) she had re hired me @ $10 and ALL of her new employees (yes, cooks too. Which I was. Son of M.M the head breakfast chef for last 30 years. My best friend is now your new Head breakfast cook D.H. Anyways since new ownership employees that have been there 20-30+ years want to leave. And you will notice all of the new people (because they are) they have amazing food, my family (literally worked there and my uncle still does) he's the head night chef, everyone has questioned there job since new management. Pay better! I'm doing the same Job at a different restaurant for almost 2x what she's starting her cooks at. that my dad also moved too (much better kitchen,management . 4 stars because of two main reasons: the fish fry and service. We got the fish fry and it was absolutely delicious. One of the best we've ever had since moving to Wisconsin. The cod was breaded to perfection. The outside was crispy and golden in color while the fish itself was flaky and moist. The fish came with fries. The fries were crispy as well. The service was excellent as well, especially during the times of COVID. We ordered take out and when we wanted to look at the menu, the server wanted to give us a recently cleaned one. They took care of us really well and we felt safe. Everything was just excellent. read more

I came up here from Ohio to see a couple of stock car races. Thought I might as well eat something. I stumbled upon the Hungry Peddler. Glad I did. I started off with Pepper Jack cheese curds. The pepper Jack was very mild, and the batter was thin. I guess I would describe them as delicate. They were delicious. The clam chowder was very thick and hearty. Don't know if it was made in house or pre packaged, but it was also very good. I also had the patty melt. The only way to describe it is ooey, gooey, cheesy. I only ate half, because I had to save room for lemon meringue pie. Also very good. I'm going to take a nap now. zzzzzz. p.s. The staff was top notch. read more
