This place is top notch in all ways from good, location, and service. We were traveling through town looking for a place to stop and I searched for places to try and the menu immediately caught my attention. We got there a little early on Sunday for lunch. Our service was outstanding the entire visit and enjoyable. I ordered the Linville Falls chicken sandwich. I love that the names of their sandwiches were places in the NC mountains. As an App Grad, I appreciated the nod to the Blue Ridge. My sandwich was perfection. Perfectly fried and tasty. I enjoyed every last but of it. The other people equally enjoyed their meals as well and many raved at how good their Bloody Marys were. We ill definitely be back when we are back on the area! I love this place so much that I went last night and I'm already excited to come back. First time I went it was just for a drink but this time I had dinner and it did not disappoint. We were waiting for a table (on a Monday at dinner time 7pm) so get there early or later if you don't want that. The wait was only like 20 mins. A seat at the bar became available so we snagged it instead. The server was prompt and Eddie isn't and kind. She was an expert at guiding us along by engaging and giving space. Their wine pours were super affordable ($5-7) and they always have a beer special (just ask!). Lots of tap and great mixed drinks too We got the nachos (sans meat) and they're huge. In the heart of Black Mountain, NC, The Trailhead, is a wonderful restaurant and bar. Right off of I-40 this is a unique one-of-a-kind restaurant and bar. We were on our way to the Montreat Conference Center and stopped to get a late lunch before checking in. The food was excellent and the atmosphere was not over-whelmed with music like so many of today's chain restaurants. I had the Ale Chicken with corn pudding. Two wonderful cuts of chicken breaded with an ale marinated glaze. This took me back to my childhood eating in fine dining establishments that offered excellent corn pudding. They did offer kale with the chicken in addition to the corn pudding, but I doubled up on corn pudding. Our server was excellent and brought us our drinks quickly and then allowed us time to look over the menu since it was our first time there. Everything was reasonably priced in the $10-$15 range. We had a great visit. Atmosphere is casual, with good old hippie music. Lots of local brewery beverages available. The food was very hot and tasty. The buffalo hot wing sauce was house made and excellent. We had three burgers, two cooked to medium well and one medium and they were as requested. They all are chargrilled, with lots of flavor. The Onion Rings are thin and crispy. The fries are house cut and excellent also. The topper off of the day was the service. Great spot in the middle of Black Mountain. Best selection of craft beer in the town. Great service, but be patient, they are always very busy, so be ready for a short wait to be seated. The Trailblazer burger is the BOMB - super delicious and huge - come hungry. She prefers the Black Bottom , portabella mushroom burger that she says is fantastic. Both come with a choice of sides. Bustling with energy and excitement - quite busy for a Tuesday! We really (REALLY) enjoyed the pub nachos appetizer! The burger with local beef was pretty good - but not overwhelmed with the flavor profile. However, we'll always support local business, farmers, ranchers when we can and like that Trailhead has the option albeit a tad pricey of an upsell. Exploring this wonderful little town and while looking for a place to eat this was one of the options and boy did it live up to the reviews. The first thing we love is how they use local products and it's a huge difference. The restaurant is very casual and it has a happy and chill vibe. We were seated immediately and our waitress (Sultona) was very sweet. She explained all the options on the menu and everything sounded amazing and tasted even better. We stated off with a bacon cheese burger soup and it was absolutely AMAZING!!! Very flavorful, fresh and had just enough just kick to stand out. On this nice cold day it definitely hit the spot. The wife had the Appalachian Trial Salad and it was very fresh, good portion size and was on point with the ingredients. I had the Linville Falls chicken sandwich with the beer batter onion rings. The sauce on the chicken sandwich was perfect. I'm not a fan of spicy food but it was a great pairing with the sandwich. Overall the establishment was a great spot to eat, relax and get a feel for the local vibe. We truly enjoyed our visit and we will definitely be back to try more items on the menu. I'd put this on your list for dinner plans if you are in the area. The service was great and the food was also great! My wife had the fish and chips and that paired with their tartar sauce was excellent- she's British so favors the malt vinegar and is particular on the "fish and chips". I had the Bacon Heights sandwich- loved it! Considering going back for another before we leave town. The drafts lean towards the hoppy or IPA side which works for me but they had plenty others to choose from. Support the local area and help them recover from Helene! We came here on our recent visit to Black Mountain. Many people recommended it so we decided to give it a try. We walked in and the atmosphere was okay, but we were more interested in trying the food so no big deal. We went to the bar since there was a wait. The bartender was not exactly friendly but was efficient. We finally got seated and our poor waitress was ragged working so hard. She was very nice and doing her best. We got the trout filet served over a charred kale salad with pickled red onions, carrots, roasted red pepper coulis, and goat cheese. As well as the seasoned pork tenderloin served with a side salad and fried polenta cakes. The trout was cooked nicely and the kale underneath with the goat cheese was fine on its own, but I am not sure I loved the combo. What I really didn't enjoy was the pool of red pepper coulis underneath. It just made it wet, like dripping. I like to try things as the chef intended but this was a bit of a miss. The pork tenderloin was cut thin and a bit dry. The polenta cakes were pretty good and creamy on the inside. My husband didn't like that his side salad was crammed onto the same plate. He would have preferred it on its own like most restaurants do. When we return to Black Mountain, we will skip Trailhead. read more

I still love this place! We were in Asheville with some friends and decided to take our friends to meander around Black Mountain. A visit to Black Mountain is not complete without stopping into the Trailhead. Service was wonderful just like our last visit. We got some fried pickle chips for the table. We were all surprised that they were a full thin spear. The breading was tasty and not overly fried or greasy. The fish and chips had the same breading and it was nice that they weren't overly greasy. I went with the Trailblazer burger since it was so good last time and oh man it did not disappoint!! We could watch all the comings and goings there and on the main street. Trailhead has a decent sized menu with a variety of options. I went with the Linville Falls, which is a fried chicken breast coated in your favorite wing sauce (I picked "hot"). It came with a side and, to be healthier, I opted for the side salad. All of it was delicious, but I tried some of my partner's lunch choice, which was Fish and Chips. OMG. That is totally what I am ordering next time we are in town. Healthy, be damned. It came out with 3 or 4 giant-sized battered fish fillets and a pile of French fries. The fish was amazing. The batter coating reminded me of KFC. It was so flavorful. The fries were so delicious, too, and definitely homemade. Our server was fantastic and super friendly, and we enjoyed the atmosphere (both inside and outside) of the Trailhead. read more

My family and I had been visiting Chimney Rock for the week, but when the storm came through from Hurricane Zeta and knocked out our power we were forced to travel down the road to Black Mountain. And what a great visit that turned out to be! We ordered the IPA O'rings to start. They were piping hot and fresh. They were perfectly crispy, not greasy at all. The sauce was the real home run for me though. Perfect flavor with a little bit of a horseradish kick at the end. Definitely recommend. I ordered The Beacon Heights (with bacon) with a side salad with the best homemade buttermilk ranch I've ever had (the ranch has a hint of dill, it was delicious). Absolutely superb! My brother ordered The Trailblazer Burger with a side salad and the Asian vinaigrette. Once he picked up his burger, I kid you not, he never sat it down, he just devoured it. I think it was probably pretty good. Ha! My dad ordered The Beacon Heights sandwich with fries and a side of the Black Mountain chili. The fries and chili were great! I will say, the chili has a good kick which I love! But if you're not a spicy guy/gal, probably should hold off. To add, the service was great. Our server was super attentive and appreciative of us. The bar atmosphere was super cool, it's a little dark, but they do offer outdoor seating if that's more your thing. Random add: eating here for 4 people was so much more flavorful, healthy, and COST EFFICIENT than anywhere else on our vacation. *the servers wear masks and customers are asked to wear them when entering and exiting.
