One of the best places in Abingdon! The bar is jovial and usually lively, until midnight (which is when the town basically closes down). Food selection is varied (mostly Germanic) and GOOD! There is a set menu and then there are specials that are offered on a regular basis. Prices are a bit high for the area, but well worth it. The building is the oldest tavern west of the appalachians, which gives it a special something. I go when I can and have always enjoyed myself. This is consistently the best restaurant in the area. I have been going here for years and again last night. My absolute favorite is the stuffed filet mignon. It is simply out of this world and I am not even much of a meat eater!!! And the French onion soup is also delicious. read more

We were staying over in Abingdon last Monday night and chose The Tavern for dinner. They were fairly busy and we were seated downstairs, which may have accounted for a lot of the problem since everyone else was upstairs. It took almost 20 minutes for a server to come by. Our waitress apologized but service didn't improve after that. She was friendly but either overworked or inept. She forgot the soup. She opened our wine and never poured a glass thereafter and she hardly stopped by, even when we wanted to get our check. For dinner we ordered two of their German specialties, crab cakes and a bowl of onion soup. Once we got the soup it was good, but the crab cakes were dreadful and the Wienerschnitzel wasn't much better, either, dry and overcooked. The Jagerschnitzel, however, was tasty, the only dish worth eating. We complained about the crab cakes and they removed that dinner from our check but even so the bill was still a reminder that you pay as much for a bad meal as you do for a good one. On a positive note, we felt The Tavern has charm and, based on the other reviews, the potential to be a higher-rated dining experience. Really mediocre food for a lot of money. It was founded in 1779, so from an historical standpoint it's a must-see. But the food is not that great and and a 3-figure bill is just not worth it. Gof for dessert ir a drink after the theatre instead. read more

I almost never give 5 star reviews, but I'm giving them extra credit for hosting my father in-law's social group with delicious food and kind service. 30 people sitting down at he same time, all with a "need to be headed to our theater outing at X" is NOT easy to serve or coordinate. a few small snafu's, but the managers took care of them quickly. Servers were efficient and gracious. My cocktails were well made (yes, there were more than one. See "in law" above - - don't judge), and I LOVED their traditional German dishes. I remember having a great meal from this place many years ago. So, when I came back to town this week, I had my first dinner out at The Tavern. I ordered the salmon. I have been to the restaurant for more than five times already and really enjoyed their food and services. But this time was a completely different experience. I didn't get the name of The hostess. She has long blond hair and she really needs to be sent to a sensitivity training. I walked in on a Monday night and asked for a table for two. She asked if I had reservation which I didn't. She said that she didn't have anything available till 8:00p, which is about 1 hr wait. So I said we don't mind sitting at the bar or those empty tables at The back of the room. She insisted on she didn't have anything not even by the bar. Obviously disappointed my friend and I decided to try something else. Two other options were closed on Mondays. So my friend decided to try the tavern again. She walked in and I waited outside for couple minutes and then walked in. She was talking to a lady in blue blouse and she was preparing a table for us. The blond hostess was there as well and there were 2-3 empty seats by the bar. So I looked at her and asked if we could sit at the bar now ? She looked at me and said well I guess some people have left and unfortunately there is only one space by the bar, which she clearly lied right in front of me. The lady in blue blouse came back and said the table is ready. The blond girl stopped her and whispered something to her. I don't even need to guess what she was telling her. There were other white folks there which i didn't see her giving them hard time getting seated. Finally the lady in blue blouse sat us. There were some empty tables in the restaurant and definitely not full. The food was good and the waitress was nice, which made up for what happened earlier. I haven't felt that racially discriminated for a while. I just want to say she probably need to be retrained or fired since she can't do her job right. Loved this place! The owner got us in early so we could make a last minute show and came by to check on us after we got our food. The wait staff was wonderful as well. Both my wife and I had the Wienerschnitzel. The veal was pounded so thin it was difficult to find. Looked more deep fried than pan fried-unless you can tell me how you can uniformly burn potato chip shaped veal in a frying pan. Beef mushroom gravy tasted like it came out of a can. Spaetzle was cold. All this for $30 per. Just terrible. On a good note, the beer was good. read more

A wonderful piece of history tucked away in a quaint little town. Max, the owner, came around 3 times to check on us - exceptional! The beers were delicious and refilled promptly. I had a shrimp and pasta special which was rich and seasoned perfectly. Our smoked salmon appetizer was perfect. Best of all? The accommodated our 7 year old son with open arms. There is not a "children's menu" per se, instead, the waitress said they make smaller portions of menu items. Hooray! No frozen chicken nuggets or pizza! Stopped in for a round of drinks before a dinner reservation just down the street. Very good selection of German beer. The owner, being German has an apparent affinity toward, Spaten. Also had the local Wolf Hills on tap, but I went for something German. The old tavern, inn style setting is charming enough to pay a visit. read more

Tavern needs to up its game a bit. It has always been consistent but seems to be sliding, coasting on its reputation. Some new restaurants uptown, notably 128 Pecan and Figaredo's, are offering some much needed competition. Tonight's "catch," Chilean sea bass, was fishy and not great. Tomatoes in the appetizer were no good, even though there are still vine ripened tomatoes available here. Salads have always been dull. How hard is it to make an imaginative salad? For the price of the meal, the quality of the food wasn't even close. It is drenched in sauces to cover the stringiness of the steak. The sides are clearly frozen or canned. You are paying for the ambiance and the service was subpar. read more

My girlfriends and I visited Abingdon this past weekend and went to the Tavern for dinner. What a delightful experience! We had been at the spa all day and had called but were told there was no more room at the inn, haha. But later, someone from the Tavern CALLED THE SPA and told us they had an opening for dinner! They actually called US. We were promptly seated, served and then given a tour even though they were getting busy....food was great, we had the salmon and filet medallions and the best Caesar salad we have ever had....will highly recommend this place and thank them for making our girls 50th birthday weekend the best! read more
