Handmade onion rings with housemade remoulade
    Kelly M.

Late lunch of broiled salmon, slaw, salad with homemade blue cheese dressing and side of housemade onion rings. Excellent service, casual atmosphere. Server, Venus, was attentive and friendly. Gave suggestions based on her experience. I like that. Basket of hushpuppies with honey whipped butter. Fast service, food was hot, fresh. Salad was just ok, like rubbery from a bag, shredded carrots, bacon bits, cheese. Cherry tomatoes were old. But I wanted to try the homemade blue cheese dressing. Lol. I will definitely eat here next time in town. Ample seafood offerings, fried or broiled.

Still great inland seafood. Just adding a new menu so those that want to see the prices can before going in. We ate here Tuesday and it was as good as always, with great service. Oh, try the onion rings, big enough for two. You'll love em.

    Clam Chowder and hush puppies

So it seems when you're in the mountains and you're craving seafood, unless it's trout, you probably should go somewhere else. Server was overwhelmed, but friendly. We arrived, a party of two, a little after 5:00 on a Friday evening and she said it had been nonstop since 3:00. It got busier as we sat there and ate our dinner. I think I actually heard her growl under her breath as she saw a party of 5 get seated in her section! My rainbow trout was delicious. I thoroughly enjoyed that. Their clam chowder was also very good. Not too thick and not too salty with perfectly cooked potatoes. Hush puppies were yummy with the honey butter. The butterflied shrimp and the fried cod were just typical. The batter wasn't anything special. Needed more seasoning. At least some salt. I have had better. I finished my trout. My husband didn't finish his shrimp and cod and after trying it, he was on his own. Server gives you your check and you pay up front. The older gentleman at the register (maybe the owner Mike?) was "yes, sir" and "yes, Mr. Johnson" to those who were waiting for their take-out and literally ignored me. Didn't even say, "I'll be with you in a second." When it finally came around to my turn after everyone around was taken care of, he didn't say one word to this Asian woman with her Puerto Rican husband. I don't think he even made eye contact with me. I smiled and said my please and thank you, of course. So I enjoyed my trout, but overall, probably not a place I'd make a return trip to. I'm all about supporting local business even if the food isn't fabulous. But if the grumpy old man at the register doesn't make everyone feel welcome, I'll spend the money elsewhere.

Solid four-star review kinda place to get your seafood fix even while in the mountains. We were impressed with our shrimp, clam strips, and oysters (we choose fried versions), as well as the sides. Nice. I want to see how the chef does the seared and grilled entrees, so next time in Boone, I'll give 'em a whirl. And maybe you should, too!

Food and service is excellent!!!!!! Super crunchy delicious hush puppies! Onion rings are huge and we got the small serving! Very crunchy. Scallops were broiled with butter and then lemon on the side - so very tender & delicious Doug's Mahi Mahi was also broiled in butter with lemon on the side, also mixed vegs with no Old Bay. Great dinner for our special occasion. Definitely will be back

It might have just been the holiday rush, but I always figure "busy means good," so my expectations were high--and The Local didn't disappoint. We started with the nachos; they were delicious, though I do wish they came with a bit more meat. For mains, the burger was outstanding--probably one of the best we've had in the entire area. We also ordered the Brazilian steak, which was cooked perfectly and came with great plantains. The quinoa with tofu was good, too, though it was a little dry and would have been perfect with a sauce. The service really stood out. Our waitress was incredibly attentive and refilled my water at least four times without me asking. Great ambiance and an all-around good experience. Definitely worth the wait!

Bar tender provided menus, and checked back on us after a few minutes to take order. They've got a good menu with pizza, sandwiches, burgers, and a good variety of entrees (seafood, steak, chicken, pasta), basically, they've got something for everyone. Not being too hungry, but knowing we needed something, we decided to just split an order of the pulled pork nachos. The food came out fairly quickly, looked and tasted great. They did not skimp on toppings. Staff was friendly, food was good, only complaint is it was very dark inside, and surprisingly loud in the restaurant, I can't imagine being there with live music, I assume it would be impossible to have a conversation.

The mozzarella sticks had very little cheese. Two of our steaks were undercooked. One was ordered well and was given rare. The other was ordered medium and was given rare. They did fix them after requested. The steak did not have enough seasoning. About 5 or 6 different servers kept coming to our table every few minutes asking if we needed anything or if they could refill our water. The disruption of conversations from being constantly asked negatively affected our experience. While I understand our reservation was later in the night and that this could have been the reason for this poor experience, I had higher expectations for this steakhouse. Sadly, this was an enough to deter me from coming back. Every server was pleasant though.

Knowing that we only had a few hours to celebrate our anniversary, my father in law told my husband…read more"go take her to The Peddler". He followed those instructions and ended the night saying "that's the best steak I've had in a restaurant". Between the excellent service and food, this was one of the best anniversary meals I've had at a restaurant. We were told to make reservations, and fortunately with the local college in summer session, we were able to select our ideal time slot. Upon arrival, we were promptly seated in their area with a rounded glass wall/ceiling that allowed for a beautiful view of Boone. The restaurant has a warm interior with a mix of wood booths or tables. The rolls they serve at the table reminiscent of the Sister Schubert's yeast rolls, and I was not mad about that. We split the 12 ounce ribeye, and got a side of their French onion soup. It came out with a nicely bubbled and browned layer of cheese covering a piece of bread atop the soup. The entree comes with unlimited salad, and I loved how you got to select your salad on a piece of paper from one of their amazing ready-made selections or they had a create-your-own space. I opted for the Cobb salad. And even after all of that food, we still opted for dessert because why not? We split the Mountain Mama Cinnabun. The massive cinnabun comes out with a nice layer of icing on top and two scoops of vanilla bean ice cream. It was all we could do to eat "two spirals" of the cinnabun and one scoop of ice cream before we had to call it quits. With all of the beautiful scenery, wonderful salads, and expertly prepared entrees, I would say the wait staff equally provided to the excellent experience. We had our dedicated table host, but in addition to that was The Peddler who takes your food order specifically, additional folks who bring out your food, and other servers whose job it is to keep your glass full and table cleared of empty dishes. All of the wait staff were extremely polite and not overbearing. All in all, it was a delightful experience, and I hope to bring more of the family up next time so they can experience that level of service and food too.

It's definitely a bit of a drive from Charlotte, but well worth it if you're exploring the mountain towns and scenery in the area. The restaurant has a really cool upscale mountain vibe that feels relaxed and comfortable without being stuffy. Great atmosphere, friendly service, and the whole place just had that quality mountain town feel to it. My wife and I both ordered trout, which felt like the right move here. I had the almond crusted trout with basil potatoes and garlicky grits, and it was excellent. Everything tasted fresh, balanced, and thoughtfully prepared. The garlicky grits were especially good. My wife ordered the smoked trout, and let's just say they do not mess around with the smoke flavor here. It was seriously smoky. A couple hours later she was still burping little smoke rings on the drive home If you love strong smoky flavor, you'll probably love it. They also had a really solid craft beer selection that fit the mountain atmosphere perfectly. Overall, high quality food, great service, fun atmosphere, and absolutely worth the drive. I had the Garden in Tibet--a delicious drink with gin, Prosecco, sugar snap pea syrup (!), green elixir syrup, elderflower liquor, and lemon. You'd think this could be a too-sweet drink, but it was PERFECT. My husband had the Which Damascus the first time, with rye whiskey, cherry basil syrup, hickory syrup, Amaro Montenegro, Tiki bitters, Peychaud bitters, and orange. He enjoyed it, but I thought it was definitely too sweet. He had a Garden in Tibet on our second visit, and preferred the Tibet to the Damascus drink. We love their unique smoked trout deviled eggs as an appetizer. This dish has two eggs filled with smoked trout, and three filled with a deviled egg mixture. The accompanying house hot sauce is so good! For our entrees, we both had hickory-smoked trout on the first visit Mine was definitely saltier than his. We had three sides--collard greens, smoked Gouda grits (our favorite), and corn, hominy, yellow squash & chile hash (so fresh and delicious!). On our second visit, I had the almond and cornmeal-crusted trout with the smoked Gouda grits, and my husband tried their fried chicken sandwich with slaw. He absolutely loved the sandwich--the chicken was thick, juicy, and very tender. He'll definitely get the sandwich again. Service is always good at Speckled Trout, and I love that we can pay with ApplePay at the table via the Toast handheld. We can't wait to return.
