Nice building with a welcoming front patio and the food was very good. However, as nice as the servers were, service was painfully slow. There was a decent crowd for a Thursday night, although it was only on the front patio (not inside), so not as many people as you'd think. Especially at this price point, it shouldn't take 20-30 minutes to get cocktails, plus another 20-30 for the first course. Thankfully it was a nice night... The other odd thing is the interior decor. The building looks to be historic and is pretty on the outside, but the inside is incredibly discordant - think the "after" house in Beetlejuice. We walked in - and right back out. I can't imagine eating a meal in there. As an architect who works on mostly residential renovations, I get the desire to mix old and new, but this is NOT the way to do it. You'd do well to add some softer tones and surfaces - as it is now, it's incredibly unwelcoming and cold. read more

We had a fantastic rehearsal dinner here in April. It was a large group and everything was perfect! The tables were ready when we arrived and the service was great. Our guests enjoyed the convenient location, nearby parking, and relaxed ambiance. It was exactly as described on the website. We love that he supports local artists. We always start our meal with Oyster Rockefeller, this time it tasted like there was basil in the cream. I wasn't crazy about that but it was still good. I ordered the night special of scallops in creamy basil pasta and my husband ordered the crab crusted salmon. Both dishes were excellent and we were excited to order something other than the tuna, which is our normal. While visiting Abingdon, VA, we went to dinner at 'Rain.' The food was excellent and the service without compare. We had a group of 10 for dinner and the waiter did an excellent job with our drink orders, appetizers, and of course our entrees. He was pleasant, and informative. The atmosphere was elegant with tablecloths and linen napkins. There was plenty of space between tables and we had wonderful dinner conversation. The steaks, I ordered the filet mignon au poivre, were good to our preferred temperature and my wife had the cobia, which she said was excellent. I'm kind of torn between a 3 & 4 star for this restaurant. I'll first go into why I would give it 4: - Atmosphere and interior is super cute - staff is so friendly and helpful - service was quick - fried oysters appetizer was amazing - steak was cooked to a perfect medium rare - mushroom soup was good ...and then reasons why I would give it a 3: - the pepper crusted steak was SO salty and it felt like no one has tasted the dish before because the level of saltiness was almost unacceptable - bread with cheese dip also salty - other fish dishes I tried as well as the calamari was just average - cocktail/drink options were just okay in my opinion. They're strong so be careful. I tried the cosmopolitan & a Moscow mule. The Moscow mule had a lot of ginger in it but not bad. Cosmopolitan kinda tasted like cough syrup you take as a kid lol Overall I had an okay experience. I'm not sure if I would come back personally. Parking was a bit limited. Be prepared to parallel if you're coming for dinner or at a busy time read more

For my last night in the region, my friends took me to their favorite restaurant, Rain. It was a great idea and I see why Rain is packed and has rave reviews. We were seated for our reservation right away. We ordered some wine by the glass and some appetizers: the baked fontina dip and oysters Rockefeller. Both were exceptional; I could have made a meal from both. I had the butternut squash soup as part of my dinner and it was delightfully creamy with a perfect savory-sweet combination. My NY strip was seared to a perfect medium rare and its sides were perfect. My friend loved his fried catfish; his wife said it was just liker her grandma used to make. She enjoyed her shrimp and pasta, too. We split the German Chocolate cake for dessert and it was hands down the lightest, fluffiest, yet still decadent slice of German chocolate cake I've ever eaten. Wow. An oasis in Abingdon that I never expected!! This restaurant is ELEVATED. The menu had some many delicious options including lamb, fresh tuna, scallops, and various cuts of steaks. We had the stuffed mushrooms for appetizers. The table ordered steaks, pasta, and the tuna dish and everyone was incredibly happy. Our server was a dream. She bent over backwards for us and never left us wanting for anything. We finished the meal with the bananas foster cheesecake and apple pie. Overall it was a perfect meal. The service was good except that the waitress wanted to start removing some of the plates while some party members were still eating. We forgot to take pictures of our food the first time we went here. We've loved everything here, with the exception of the chicken. (Just stick to seafood in my opinion!) The butternut squash soup was amazing! The first time we went, I wasn't even hungry enough for soup, but it came with our food. So I got it for my husband to try. I tasted it though and didn't want to stop! It is perfect, with just a hint of spice. I'd say it's a bit too think and sweet for ME to have an entire bowl, but the cup is PERFECT. Tuna, perfect. Lemony pasta, perfect. The calamari was good, but we want to try the crap and artichoke dip next! We've always had good service and will definitely be back many times. Do watch out for the tables though. Make sure you've got a napkin under your glasses. I watched my untouched water slide right off the side of the table out of the corner of my eye! Had reservations for a party of 8 on a Saturday night. Seated promptly and the hostess brought us water and told us the waiter would be over soon. There was a regular menu as well as a menu of daily specials. Most of us ordered the trout special but did not want the creamed collards. They were very accommodating-- I got the fried spinach instead. Trout was perfectly cooked, potatoes perfectly roasted and I really liked the horseradish dipping sauce. You could choose soup or salad to start. I went with the butternut squash soup and it was absolutely fabulous. Decor was neat but the restaurant was a little noisy. Decent meal and a cute atmosphere in Abingdon! I didn't get a photo of the salad but they must have literally picked the spring lettuce from the garden, it was that fresh. The butternut squash soup had a little Thai twist with coconut milk, spice and peanuts and cilantro. I should have ordered a bowl instead of just a cup. This place looks older from the outside, but inside it's new, modern, big and bright. Unfortunately, it is also very LOUD! The floors being polished concrete and super high ceilings adds to the noise. Parking is limited, but discoverable around and near the restaurant. We were seated immediately, despite it being a Saturday evening. Service was very good. My wife and I each found a wine we liked; Riesling for me, Cabernet Sauvignon for her. Bread before your meal comes at a price. We each had a small mixed green salad that came with our meal. I thought the Parmesan Peppercorn dressing had very little taste. Disappointedly, so was my linguine. First of all, it was definitely more than a one pound box! It had cherry tomatoes, mushrooms and roasted garlic, but that was lost amongst the massive portion. I would have preferred a more reasonable amount of pasta to balance the other ingredients better, but it had very little flavor, IMO. My wife's Salmon Rockefeller was outstanding. Although, my meal wasn't very memorable, I wouldn't hesitate to try something different. P.S. I took the pasta home after eating on it, separated it into two more servings and made dinner from it another evening! read more
