The turkey was wonderful flavor and the rice was just rice. I got there late so they were running out of food. I went up to the window and the cute lady beckoned for a male behind me to come up. He told me they were closing and that he would fix me what they had. I should've told him less veggies but with it being my first visit I wanted to let him do his thing. There were several of his friends sitting and shooting the ish and eating on the outdoor patio. These are the only options they have for seating. So the awesome gentleman fixes my plate and I take a seat. I had turkey and gravy, rice, green beans, corn on the cob and a roll. There is a vending machine for drinks. I got a Diet Coke. While I was sitting and eating the owner came up to me to tell me to come back tomorrow (Friday) because he was grilling ribs on the massive grill in the side yard. I told him I was sorry but I was not in town the next day but would come when he was grilling again. He told me he grilled every Friday and I was welcome to come and eat and hang out. I told him it was a date for the future. Since then COVID has infected our world and the restaurant has temp closed. As soon as they are up and running, I will make that grill Friday!

Sometimes the most frustrating restaurant experiences aren't the terrible ones…read more They're the ones that are so close to being really good. That's how I felt about Mama's Chicken Kitchen. I came in with high expectations. The restaurant has strong reviews, it's part of the Johnson Family of restaurants, and I've enjoyed several of their other establishments over the years. So I walked in expecting a meal that would have me planning a return visit before I even paid the check. What I got instead was one of the strangest cases of missing seasoning I've encountered in quite some time. Let's start with the positives. The people here are genuinely nice. Friendly, welcoming, and attentive. Everyone we encountered was pleasant and seemed to care about providing a good experience. The restaurant itself is clean, comfortable, and inviting. And the kitchen clearly knows how to cook food. The fried chicken was cooked beautifully. Crispy on the outside. Juicy on the inside. Exactly the texture you're hoping for when you order Southern fried chicken. The problem? The seasoning apparently called in sick. This chicken had all the flavor intensity of a weather report. No noticeable salt. No spice. No personality. It tasted like the chef had just completed community service at a nursing home and was legally prohibited from possessing a salt shaker. My piece of chicken was juicy and cooked properly. Unfortunately, my wife's chicken breast was noticeably dry, which didn't help matters. Then came the fried pickles. No seasoning. Chicken and dumplings. No seasoning. Coleslaw. Tasteless. At one point I started wondering if there had been some sort of building-wide seasoning shortage that nobody had told us about. The frustrating part is that none of the food was poorly cooked. Quite the opposite. The techniques were there. The textures were there. The execution was there. It just felt like someone got everything ready and forgot the final, critical step of making the food taste like something. This is a restaurant with good people, a pleasant atmosphere, and a kitchen that clearly knows how to cook. Now they just need to introduce their food to salt, pepper, and a few of their seasoning friends. Three stars. Because the potential is absolutely there. The flavor just never showed up for work.

A friendly welcoming atmosphere was the start of the Soul! The wait was 8 minutes with, like I said, a crowd in front of us. Friendly chatter ensued. The pork chop was coming out of the frier and I mentioned how amazing it looked. Tony threw in a 'too small to sell' freebee pork chop. 2 words... IT SLAAAAPED! Left no crumbs. Got some honey bbq wings. Mac and cheese. Green beans. Fried okra. All very delish! I only hope I take a trip back up to Soul Food Island. Thank you Tony and Tammy.

My drink came neat, but it was a Manhattan. My wife'sa Manhattan came on ice, as ordered. The pours were really, really tiny. We both ordered bowls, which were decent. Nothing to write home about.
