Dirty timers here, and we sure will be back! The food was great, the best potatoes and gravy I've had in a very long time!

We found out after we sat down that they stop serving breakfast at 11:30 am on Fridays, in order to prep the kitchen for all the fish frying they do. The restaurant feels like you'd expect for a place called "Pop's"; very homey, a little old-fashioned, but comfortable. We snagged a table for four to wait for my parents to arrive, and the nicest waitress I've ever met brought us coffee and water. (The coffee was surprisingly good, by the way.) Once my parents arrived, we were able to order: Chicken Fried Steak, corn bread and macaroni & cheese and potato salad for me (plus a bonus biscuit brought by our kind waitress); French Dip sandwich for my husband; chicken livers with corn and mashed potatos for mom (don't judge her...I already did haha); beef steak with mashed potatoes and tater tots for dad. My husband also ordered a plate of the spicy pickles for the table, though my mom - who will eat fried chicken livers at 12 pm on a Thursday - refused to touch them. The pickles came out quickly, and were served with two spicy ranch and one regular ranch for dipping. My dad, husband and I went to town on them - crispy, perfectly fried and paired well with the sauces - while my mom looked on. It didn't take long for the menfolk to clear the plate of pickles, so we waited. And we waited. And then we waited some more. Our waitress stopped by a few times to refill our coffee and water, and to give us updates on the food. She did apologize that it was taking so long, at least. Once the food did come out, we all fairly fell on our plates. The chicken fried steak was decent, and had some good flavor. The mac and cheese was good, the potato salad was zesty. The biscuit was big and fluffy on the inside, with a slight crisp to the crust. Perfect. My least favorite thing was the cornbread muffin, it was bland to me. Everybody else loved their meals, though my mom kept saying how big the serving was. It was like the kitchen took every chicken liver they had in the fridge, fried it up and dumped it on her plate. There was no way she was going to eat everything, so she pushed some over to my husband, the only other human at that table who would have been inclined to help her with her meal. We all pushed away from the table over 90 minutes later, sated by the meal and pleased by the service.

They have home style breakfast that is fantastic. Haven't tried lunch or dinner yet. Looks great.read more

I have eaten at Cheddar's before but typically not watching what I was eating. They have a vast menu of quality downhome options. As I'm on a health journey, this will focus on their healthier options. The restaurant itself is in a busy part of Kingsport that has many restaurants of different kinds. It was clean and well laid out. There was ample parking and it was easy to get to. The service was good, as the waitress was attentive and checked on me regularly. She brought out the honey buttered croissant and was able to make recommendations. As for the food, there was several healthy options. A couple types of chicken, sirloin steaks, and fish options (salmon and white fish). I chose the Lemon Pepper chicken breast with rice and carrots and green beans as the side. The chicken was very good and flavorful. There were 2 breasts included so it was nice and filling. The rice was just enough to supplement the chicken with a little bit of carbs. The carrots were tender but lacked flavor. The green beans were average. Overall, this location was clean and friendly and had some healthy options to allow health conscious patrons some options. The chicken was very tasty while the carrots and green beans were pretty standard.

(I ordered off the GF menu) when the food was brought out there was a cup of sauce on the plate. I asked what it was. She said it is bourbon glaze. I questioned her on if this was GF bc it was not listed as GF. I was told by her and another man that helped her carry out our food "I think so." I asked that they make sure because to my knowledge nothing with bourbon is GF. She walked back to the kitchen and came back and said, "I just asked the kitchen manager and he said, "It is gluten free." I really didn't trust it bc there was clearly a lack of training. I asked for the ingredient list for the glaze she goes back to the kitchen. While she was in the kitchen I pulled their GF stuff up and it wasn't there. Within the menu online it clearly stated "gluten sensitive served without bourbon glaze." So, when she came back and to tell me again it was GF and the kitchen manager told her it was safe. I told her that the glaze was not GF and was listed online as it was not GF. She was like yes it is I asked twice. I then asked for a manager bc I know it is a lack of training and it is a very serious issue. If I would have eaten it I would have had a bad allergic reaction. She teas like I just asked him. So I said "Please I'm asking you to ask the Manager to come out." It took forever for the manager to finally come out. When one of the people I was with said it is taking him forever to come out. I said, " he is probably back there brushing up on the ingredients before he comes out so he knows what he is talking about." When he finally came out that was confirmed. He told me that he was sorry bc they told me wrong and that it isn't GF. I told him that he needed to do better at training the staff bc it isn't a waitress issue at this point it is a management issue bc the training isn't in place and if I didn't know what I was talking about I would have ended up with an allergic reaction that could have sent me to the ER. Giving someone with an allergy to Gluten can KILL them. I share this story for my other allergy people to triple check and if you have a gut feeling you need to sit there and research before partaking in the food. I did tell the waitress that it wasn't her fault that they didn't train her for this. My brother who is a manger and has taken the safe serving class told her to never take her managers word for it to always make them come out to talk to the person so if this was to happen and the person was to eat it she wouldn't be at fault. You could see the effect the situation had on her that it almost happened. Just an FYI she knows we were not mad at her.

We drove from Johnson City to Kingsport one morning looking for something quick, and as always, I trusted my Yelp peeps to point us toward something good. Big As Biscuits & Burgers is tucked inside a gas station but don't let that deter you for a second. These biscuits are no joke. We were originally thinking of a sit-down breakfast, but my partner is a full-blown biscuit enthusiast. If we see biscuits, we try the biscuits. So we stopped in, and the woman behind the counter was incredibly friendly and welcoming. We grabbed a ginormous biscuit for just over $3. She had all the single-serve jams and jellies ready to go, which I appreciated. We took it back to the car to eat. First impression: this thing requires two hands. It's massive. She had already sliced it for us, and when I opened it up, you could see the buttery pockets where it melted into the dough while baking. It wasn't ultra-layered and flaky like a laminated biscuit, but it was perfectly soft on the inside with a beautiful crunch on the outside. The flavor was spot on!!! Soft, warm, buttery and comforting. We added a little jam, though honestly it didn't even need butter. It was that good. If you're looking for a quick, satisfying bite that will absolutely fill your belly, stop at Big As Biscuits & Burgers. We're already talking about grabbing a few more to bring back to the hotel before we leave town. Sometimes the best finds are inside a gas station and sometimes a biscuit really can make your morning.

Not because they are big since you expect that from the name but because they are right. Crisp buttery crust and fluffy yet moist interior. 60% of biscuits in the world are failures due to a dry interior. Another 20% fail for being too dense and wet, cakey instead of fluffy. Big As Biscuit does it right and nails the texture. The breakfast biscuit offerings are fast food like but definitely a step up from the nat'l chains. The variety is astounding and I imagine almost everyone can get one exactly as they want. The burgers: Don't try to get one on Saturday. Sadly I was told they don't prep them on Saturday. The rest of the week though the burgers are worth the drive for a lunch if you're within striking distance. It's a good size and the fixins are fresh. It's been awhile since I had one so I'm short on details. I remember enjoying it though and ranking it above any fast food burger. I did try to get another one last Saturday so obviously I'd go back for one. I got a steak biscuit instead. It was a very thin food service chicken fried steak. Half its thickness was breading. It was good eaten alone. Inside of a biscuit though it was basically a mouthful of bread. The eggs also were a food service product I think. Two homogeneous pale yellow egg pucks were on my steak biscuit. A little institutional but they tasted ok. I wouldn't get the steak biscuit again as it's too bready but I am looking forward to trying a sausage or ham biscuit. Either way with the size of the biscuit it's a lot of food. I don't imagine there's too many of us that would want two for breakfast I can legitimately recommend you give this place a try. It's good food and plenty of it.
