Well, that bathroom is pretty freaking scary and ga-ross which is a minus when you're filling your belly with delicious, delicious beer. Eh, at least I was tipsy enough to just rock it. I loved the dark look of the bar, the patrons were laid back bearded types, and I thought the beer list was freaking fantastic-- the bar wasn't crowded around 10:30 pm on a Friday night, major plus, and when I come back to Seattle, I'll be sure tot hit this great Capitol Hill haunt again. Great place to finish off a day. The beers border on being so good I want to call them gourmet. To the unrefined eye, it might look like a small dingy (minus the smoke) place but give it a try and you might find it's one of the coziest spots in capitol hill to have a few drinks with your friends. read more

oh boy, is this place fun to be. when you first step in, you fully expect the bartenders and clientle to be as pompous and pretentious as the beer list. surprisingly [and delightfully], they're not. it's usually a very laid-back kind of place, with constantly foggy windows and limited seating. the bartenders, a pair of scruffy-looking gentlemen, are extremely courteous and will help you out with your selection if you're not too into beers. their prices aren't off-the-wall and the beer list is usually extensive, with a wide array of beers for all types of palates. if you go, i suggest the "trois pistole" by unibroue or the "brother thelonius" by idon'tknowwhothefuck for the dark ales, because they're cheaper than most ($4.50 last i was there) and taste just as good, regardless of what the prick-who-wishes-he-were-from-europe behind you tries to tell you. if you're into lighter beer, the du pont is pretty good and the "120 minute IPA" by dogfish head is insanely good and a whopping 21% abv. did someone say b.o.m.o.? the biggest downfall of the place is that is gets crowded pretty early in the night and stays that way on all the days you really want to go drinking with your friends (weekends, thursdays), so you're left standing around a lot, trying to look cool while sipping your delicious beer. read more

I thought this place was okay. Smells a little funky though. It's nice to get away from crowded, loud places but wish they had a larger selection. Went here once but they only had either really strong beers or sour ales. :/ they do have games! No cards though so we had to buy our own at a convenient store nearby. I like this place. I'm a big fan of belgian beers, it's low key, and it's on capitol hill. Try the Delirium Tremens if you go. Don't expect anything fancy, they didn't even have any music playing when I was there. It's worth checking out though, you'll either love it or hate it. I love the Stumbling Monk. The dim atmosphere, the quiet ambiance that encourages conversation, the foggy windows looking out on the street, the shelves of board games available for the guests, they all make this a special place for me. It is a humble bar, and you can tell that it has been a labor of love building it up to where it is today. There are no glitzy lights or neon jukeboxes. It is a simple place, appropriate to the abbey beers that populate it. What more do you need than some sturdy wooden chairs, tables and comfy booths, along with your friends and some fine ales. Some might say that it is too modest of a setting, since the ceiling is slightly crumbled and there are no truffle-oil-chicken-quesadillas to be had. To each their own. They probably wouldn't appreciate a nice sour ale anyways. read more

This is some of the best beer i've ever tried, and that means a lot from a guy who usually skips over belgian beers in favor of the german brews. My buddy and I had a great time here. We had some fantastic heavy winter ales and played an old school game of battleship. The beer is definitely 5 stars, and even if the food was terrible i'd give this place 5 stars. The only reason I subtracted a star is that there's virtually NO food at this place, just some chips and jerky. For me that is not enough to offset the burly beers they serve. I recommend going here after filling your belly at a nearby pub. read more

I like the concept and the love the name. I expected more. I have been to Brussels, Belgium. Very poor imitation. Needs a better presentation. It would different if they just started. They have been there 16 years! Pretty good selection. I expected better on that. What I really didn't get was there was no food at all? U r within walking distance of great places with great artesian bread, cheese, and meat. U could sell that. That's what they usually get in places like that. That would really kick it up a notch. Amazing bar! Half their beer is belgian and the other half is domestic. Not bud light domestic, but Lost Abbey domestic. With a constantly updated draft list, I never get tired of there selection. Plus every Thursday is cask night with $3 pints of the cask. I love a good sour beer and this place delivers! Really nice booth area, open tables, big bar, I'd definitely recommend this place for a big group or a small meet up. Its not usually busy, even on the weekends its usually pretty easy to find a place. The menu board changes fairly often and they always have a great selection of Belgian beers. I was with a few friends hanging out after a film showing at the egyptian when the suggestion to drink here came up. A short walk later and I found myself comfortable in the location that is the Stumbling Monk. The booths were your classic dive bar seating but that didn't matter at all because they had a great selection of delicious Belgium beers. The bar tender was very friendly and helpful, also there was the option of board games. It was very dimly lit that created this very casual and relaxing environment that helped to open up conversation. Seriously, there is no other place in seattle where you'll find such a good selection of Belgian and Beligan-style beers for such a low price. I was just visiting the town and this little place was so close to Capitol Hill. My boyfriend had been here before and told me they were pretty cool. Going in and looking at the menu, I had absolutely no idea what to order. Finally I just picked a Dogfish Head IPA I think and it was amazing. It felt great just sitting up at the bar sipping on this nice beer and enjoying the ambiance. Sure, the place isn't new, bright, or modern but that's what makes it so great! It almost makes one feel like they have stepped back into time. These beers are no Pabst that you just chug and go either. They are meant for savoring and enjoying. So if you just want to go somewhere and chug some watery slightly alcoholic beverage for cheap, this isn't the place. However, savoring the beer brings good conversation. Lets just say in my week in Seattle I went to this place 2 or 3 times. True, they don't serve hard alcohol but these beers sometimes have 11% ABV. Someone told me they had a 21%. The only downfall here is that there was a guy working the first time that was just very short and cold to us. We kept asking questions and he would answer them in as few words as possible. However the next night we went and had a great conversation with the guy who turns out is the owner. So it really depends on who you get as your bartender.
