Great wee addition to East Belfast. Good atmosphere and quirky decor. Lots of great ales on offer to sample, excellent bar to meet and catch up with friends **Updated October 2016 Had to remove a star due to the food! I have eaten here twice now and although the food is nice it is soooo overpriced for what you get! My first order was for a 'fill your box' which is basically 4 bar snacks for £10, so £2.50 each. We ordered four items including chicken wings which we got 3 of!!!! For £2.50-3 wings!!!!!! This time we went for a 'meal!' And ordered the mixed combo to share at £21. It basically consisted of 3 onion rings, a few chips, a tiny steak, 1/2 rack of VERY small and fatty ribs, a thin piece of chicken and pepper sauce (the only decent sized portion, unfortunately there wasn't enough food to use it with!). I would suggest eating somewhere else in the road, there are many restaurants to choose from. This bar is best for its drink selection only in my opinion.

Great bar and restaurant, I've been In here once from it has changed to stokers halt from the point and what and great improvement , lovely decor in keeping with the name! , I haven't tried the food but I plan too soon, lots of variety of drinks including local craft beers, staff are friendly ,great atmosphere and lovely place to have a drink a bite to eat. Got to eat in here eventually and I've got to be honest I wasn't overly impressed by the food I got, I got chicken goujons and chips with a garlic mayo dip. The chicken goujons were meant to be southern fried although I didn't taste any southern fried taste on them at all and I didnt like the texture of the chicken goujons , the chips were pale but tasted nice and the garlic dip was nice but a bit vinegary. I would try other food on the menu and the desserts look nice.

Oh, hold on, that was me. I recently had a night out with a large group in the lonely Poet, for a meal and (lots of) drinks. I am delighted to say that the waiting staff were friendly, efficient and had all the patience required to deal with a bunch of over excited thirty somethings let loose for the night. I had Thai fish cakes to start - totally yum and served with lime dressing and then I played it safe with a steak as I needed something substantial to line the old tum with. The steak was perfectly well done as I had requested, and the extra chunky chips I ordered were certainly chunky! The rest of the night was a blur of multiple drinks orders and our lovely waitress didn't even flinch at the end when we tried to calculate our shares of the bill. On the visit before that with just a couple of friends, I had a chicken ceasar (ok ok, chunky chips too) which was top notch and then enjoyed the live music which I think happens every Sunday. It will sound like I never cook, but I was recently in the Lonely Poet with another group of friends for a birthday lunch. There were a couple of small kids in the group and they were treated like visiting royalty. A colouring in book and crayons for the young lady? Of course. Some complimentary carrot sticks? Certainly. Sausage and chips which aren't even on the menu? No problem as we say in Belfast. Anywhere that makes this much effort to keep the whole family happy will always get my vote!

Well decorated, sleek and refined, it really is a million miles away from what the pervious pub looked like. Having frequented The Lonely Poet almost every Sunday night for a couple of months, my friends and appreciate the fab wee Irish band who play their hearts out each week. The very first time I went to the Lonely Poet was with a couple of friends for dinner. The food wasn't brilliant - my pasta tasted a bit watery, and we did have a very long wait for it, despite the fact that there really weren't that many other people in the place. I was a bit disappointed. The first time I went on a Sunday night with a large group of friends for a drink, we waited 25 minutes to be served, and there must have been at least 10 of us sitting there. Not a great start. Since then, it has really been hit and miss. The staff have sometimes been lovely, other times they've been stand-offish and a bit awkward. One Sunday, we were told that the kitchen had been closed early, even though it was only 9pm, and they didn't close for at least another 2 hours. Oh dear. So, there you have it. I'm really no clearer, and in fact, probably a bit more confuddled. Still, Sunday nights at the Lonely Poet will probably be a regular occurence. The only way is up, eh?

Now when I say pizza and pasta, please don't think I mean the usual pepperoni pizza and pasta with tomato sauce (although those have their time and place too). Oh, no. Oh, no no no no no. The pizzas and pastas in Coast are (as that old buffer Michael Winner would say) historic. The pizzas are made on a kind of flat bread which is their own recipe and I could eat it plain without a topping it's so good. But not to look odd, I do the right thing and order toppings like everyone else. Again the toppings are unusual are so so good. My favourite is chilli beef and onions. You get loads of lean beautifully marinated beef - my mouth is watering at the very thought. - and at under £6, this is outstanding value. You can throw on extras like rocket, chorizo, pancetta and sun blush tomatoes. Trust me, you have never had pizza this good. Pasta is an equally good choice - the chorizo carbonara is fab. Order a side of garlic bread, let out your belt and surrender to it. The tobacco onions are unmissable too - long strings of onions coated in something delish and deep fried. Coast is very child friendly and can be noisy in the early evenings so you may want to take advantage of the take away service - make sure you ring ahead with your order.

With an extensive wine and craft beer choice there is something for everyone! On arrival we were a little confused to where the dining area was as we came in what we knew later to be the back bar entrance. Leading us into a separate dining area which had no one about. The bar staff were busy and didn't catch on that we were a little lost. A member of our party tried a door which took us into the restaurant area. We had a good table and it was relatively busy for a Tuesday. It turns out Tuesdays are a night with steaks on offer also, a good deal but I knew what I wanted before I got there. I chose the local scallops, black pudding crumb, lobster & parmesan infused risotto this looked great on arrival however I quickly spotted there was no black pudding and an addition of chopped king prawn to the risotto. The dish was a little bland but with additional parmesan it improved. Another lady with my party did not enjoy the risotto at all and really only ate the small scallops on top. For main course I went for the flat iron steak having loved it at another restaurant. I was informed by the waitress it was served pink... My favourite way for a steak! When the food was delivered there was a little mix up and tooing and froing. What seemed like a little misunderstanding over surf with some turf, kinda felt like a big deal to one of the waitresses. Having tucked in I could see the steak was more medium-well and as i bit in realised it was very tough, chewy and over cooked. I tried another bit and it was the same. I brought this to the attention of another waitress who quickly took it away. She returned to assure me another was on the way and that they would speak to supplier as this was unusually tough cut. I got my replacement which was exactly how I had imagined however my whole party had finished their meal and I felt a little like I as holding them up. We had brought our own cake for dessert and organised for the obligatory candles, parade and song. However before taking the cake out the waitress didn't check our table and it was missed by the guys Mum and daughter who'd went to the bathroom. Id tried to make eye contact to kitchen door but Birthday spotted her and she had to continue. Ha what a palava! We got no plates or forks with the heavily iced bday cake which we had to chase. I don't know what to make of here. Nearly want to try it again due to food being quite nice, friendly but inconsistent service and the great reputation it has built. Maybe this was an off night?

The style of the place is to a pharmaceutical theme, for example, the drink menu is called 'Potions and Elixirs' - the reason for this, is that the establishment is named after a well known Pharmacist, who operated in Ballyhackamore many years ago, named, Horatio Todd! The menu is not overly big, but well thought out. I absolutely love the chicken wings from their light bits menu. So today, in Romas, I was ordering my second pint of the day, and I asked the supervisor if I could go to the other side of the bar to get it cheaper and bring it round to this side of the bar (the food side, as there was no room on the other side). He replied that he'd rather I didn't, so I said, ok, we'll do it your way this time, but we can do it my way next time, it's a good compromise. Once he'd served me my pint he said to me that it was my last one. I asked him why, and he said that he just didn't want to serve me any more. I then asked him if I was banned for good, and he refused to answer. After several attempts of trying to get an answer, he said that I wasn't barred for good. I tried to get a reason to why he wouldn't serve me any more drink, and he just replied that he didn't want to. I asked to speak to his manager, and he told me that he was allowing me to drink this pint, with the implication that if I caused trouble he wouldn't. I said that I didn't want the pint but did want to speak with his manager. He took my pint and emptied it. The manager, a short plump middle aged lady, with dark hair, came round from the other bar, and queried if I'd been barred (which I hadn't as I am only visiting newtownards from England to visit my mother who is in a nursing home). I then asked how I could make a complaint, to which she replied that I should write a letter. I asked if they had an email address, to which I was told that they did. I then asked 4 times what the email address was and received no reply. I was then told it was on your website. I feel that my treatment today has been very humiliating, for no good reason what so ever, and I am hoping for a satisfactory apology and retraining of your staff and management as this is well below proffessional standards. Made me feel that I was in the playground again trying to justify myself against a lot of unreasonable bullies. Absolutely disgusting customer service and complaints management.
