Very good food (amazing chef) but poor service. Maybe understaffed? I felt bad for the waiters. My parents and I chose to eat here since it has an outdoor seating area and we were hungry for big meals. It was around 3pm and not crowded. We received water. 15 minutes went by: we saw the waitress scrambling to bring out drinks, bread and food for tables while the waiter was also bartending inside and outside. They must be understaffed because these two employees were doing absolutely everything they could to keep this place afloat, I felt bad for them. So did other guests because one woman (in frustration of not getting her check) began to help bus and clean tables. We asked both waiters for bread. 15 minutes later, another waitress arrives at the restaurant to help, we ask her for bread. We waited around 30 minutes just for bread. Our appetizer (each got lobster bisque) was delicious. Other parties were so annoyed at the service, one table send someone to go over to Water Street and brought back hot dogs!!! Multiple new customers arrived, saw the poor service and left. Our entrees were great! We agreed that the chef was awesome, but no one wants to spend 3 hours of their afternoon at a restaurant! read more

I am solely reviewing the wine bar aspect of The Station and not the food (ie, I can't report if they can make things vegan and delicious). We ducked into here at the start of a huge storm after throwing one back at the Parish across the street. What a lovely respite! It was a quiet night and we sat at the bar. There was a good selection of wines by the glass and trust me, I indulged enthusiastically. We had good conversation with the lovely bartender, the owner and one of the waiters. Everyone was so nice, gave us a lot of insight to the area as well, cuz we're not from 'round these parts (but will be moving not so far away in the near future). There is a covered patio area lit with fairy lights and tiki torches that positively beckoned to us, but that damn weather... that said we found inside, back by the bar is equally inviting. It also bears mentioning that New Paltz (understandably) has an array of college student-oriented establishments and The Station definitely appeals to an older demographic (read: parents of college students, professors, travelers) which is a plus for anyone also looking for a great date night spot. read more

I was a guest at a large party held here recently and my review is based on that experience. Many of the reviews here refer to the food as overpriced but since I don't know how much it cost it doesn't factor into my comments. Finding the road in was difficult, and I used the one-way exit to get in. I arrived around 5:00PM and the place was dim. Some would say "intimate" but there was no getting around that the lights were low. If this is always the case then I am not sure I would enjoy it. It was tastefully decorated for Valentine's Day, and there were a row of wine bottles all around the exterior. I am one of those klutzes who might knock them down, so if you are like me beware! (I didn't sit along the wall just to be safe). There were also lots of train-themed pictures and such, which suited me just fine as I am a train nut. Our meal started with garlic bread. It was hearty and tasted a lot of garlic, which I enjoyed. They kept it coming all evening. Then, we had three salads (an Italian antipasta, a Caesar, and a regular house salad) and I thought the antipasta was great. Huge slices of cheese, rolled meats, lots of olives and hot peppers... some were easily identified as pepperoncini, but others looked like nondescript green peppers and they fooled a person at our table. The Caesar salad was underwhelming though I got to it at the end of the bowl and perhaps there was more dressing on the top of the greens. The house salad was, well, a house salad with tomatoes and cucumbers and such. Fried calamari and artichokes were also brought out (along with some dipping sauces that we couldn't identify and which I didn't try) and it was very good, though it has been unevenly salted. Some pieces were perfectly seasoned and some were begging for salt, which was not on any of the tables. Odd. The entree choices were pasta, Chicken Saltimbocca, or steak. The steak looked amazing and it came with sides of mashed potatoes and steamed veggies. The chicken looked pretty good and came with oven roasted potatoes and steamed veggies. The pasta was cavatelli with broccoli and sausage, and that is what I ordered. The ratios were off, though, and it seemed like 45% pasta, 45% sausage, and little broccoli stems. I never found a broccoli floret so I can't be positive there was broccoli in it. The sausage was overwhelming in amount (normally a good thing, but here it was too much) and the sauce was a garlic butter sauce. After so much garlic bread throughout the evening, I wish I ordered something else. On its own right, though, it probably would have been fine. It was unbelievably salty however. I only drank water, which they served in large wine glasses. I probably had them refill it six times through the four hours we were there. Desserts were the Italian variety: cannoli, tiramisu, a chocolate peanut butter torte, and some white cherry thing. They were very good. I don't know if they were catered in or brought by the party hosts, but I tried everything and enjoyed all of them. All in all, it was a pleasant evening. Some would say service was "slow" but it was a party after all. I didn't mind the long waits but if regular dining service also takes this long I would not be happy. The location is absolutely perfect to make a profit and succeed. The tourists visiting for the weekend are a large part of the target audience. This location requires attention to detail that is currently missing. To be honest, the food is below average because the ingredients they receive from their current distributor are not up to par. It's low budget, cheap ingredients, and you can can taste the bargain. I felt bad for our waiter who recommended the skirt steak because it came out absolutely cold, bland, and watery like it was frozen. The waiter assured me the steak wasn't microwaved, but it was rubbery. I didn't eat much of it and sent it back to be tossed. I was charged $20 for steak and side of fries (McCain?) instead of $34. It's not the waiter's fault and I wanted to come back to the restaurant and cook a skirt steak proper in the parking lot for the waiters, cooks AND management to enjoy. With attention to detail and better sourcing of ingredients, this place can become the talk of the town. I wish the business good luck! read more

Went here on a whim and just hoped for the best since we're starving after a long day of hike. The bread and dip they serve as you wait is good. We had the seafood mac n cheese for appetizer which was delicious, plus it had a lot of seafood in it such as shrimp, lobster and scallops. For main course, we all had steaks with a side of mushrooms. The steak also came with mashed potatoes. Everything was really good and the steaks came out perfect being tender and medium rare. The only downside was the wait time. I think it took 45-50mins for our main course to come out. Appetizer took 20mins or so. read more

We always venture to the new Paul's area every autumn. We wanted to try a new place and we chose this one. And it just changed over ownership and I guess was trying to create a new menu. But this is not a good combination. The meal took a long time to get, we waited 45 minutes for our entrées. The appetizers were cold, the waitresses were overworked and probably underpaid. The drinks weren't that good. Although the location was excellent, right near the bridge to Mohonk. I wanted this place to be really good but my expectations were too high. We wouldn't go back there again and that's unfortunate. read more

I had dinner with a larger group at La Stazione recently, and for convenience we set up in advance a selection of appetizers and a more limited menu. So I didn't get to experience the full menu or the daily specials, but what I did get to see and try, I enjoyed very much. My evening began with a drink at the bar, a featured cocktail made with Tuthilltown vodka. It was very well crafted, and it should have been, considering the price ($14). The beer list is decent, the wine list is more extensive. For appetizers we were given plates of caprese salad (good, but the cheese was not quite a firm as expected) and calamari. I rarely eat calamari, but I am glad I tried theirs. It is among the best I have ever eaten - crisp and light, not chewy at all, but VERY salty. The marinara sauce accompanying it tempered the saltiness well. The best word to describe my eggplant parmesan was "thick," both reflecting the portion of eggplant and the marinara sauce accompanying it. Like the calamari, the eggplant was crisp and light with almost no greasiness. It came with sides of sauteed spinach and a potato for which I do not know the name/style - it was essentially cooked or mashed potato covered with a breaded topping and subsequently fried for a crisp skin. Now note the word I did not include with regard to my dinner: Pasta, which did not come with this dish. Service was great all-around. I would have appreciated ice in our water glasses, though the water was relatively cool and replenished often. I bet the folks dining outside in 90 degree weather would have appreciated that too. Prices are above average and perhaps a bit more than you'd expect to pay for this type of food. But it is good quality food. My suggestion would be that if you are looking for more traditional Italian dishes served in more family-style portions, you should perhaps consider other favorite Italian restaurants. Come here for a nicer, more interesting, and perhaps slightly less traditional dinner. read more

Arguably one of the worst restaurants I have ever eaten at. My friend and I went on a Friday night. The place was empty - not one other table was taken at 7:30pm. COVID or no COVID that is clearly not a good sign. We were seated at a tiny table in the back of the restaurant. We asked, can we move to a larger table and the host made a face and lied... He said he had other reservations. Surprise surprise, there were no other reservations and the restaurant remained empty. They also offer a 5% discount if you pay in cash - we asked to pay in cash and he gave us a hard time. I guess if you tell them upfront they will make your platters smaller. In terms of the food, it was pretty cruddy. $30 for a bowl of linguini that was mushy? Clearly never heard of al dente. Don't waste your hard earned money. read more

I hate reviews that start the way I'm about to - wish I could make this 3.5 stars, but I will err towards 3. If you are into really good fresh pasta, have a lot of money, and don't mind long waits, this is the place for you. The other entrees are good, sauces quite good, but I don't get the prices. We were a table of six. High points were the tuna stack appetizers. For $24. I get it, $24 for atmosphere and the place looks nice. (The atmosphere also included room temperatures so low I had to get sweaters from the car and frequently hid out in the oddly hot bathroom to heat my feet up). Still - $24 for a smallish appetizer. Low points - a chicken special with mushrooms. For $32. I am a short-order cook at home, and without hesitation I'll say my cooking would blow that "special" out of the water. Dinner salads - again, like the chicken, fine, but at about 50% of the price based on what we got. I think the server's name was Bill, he was really hustling and nice, but at $32 for so-so chicken, I would hope for enough staff to keep the glasses filled. But he was nice and really hustled. Well-deserved tip. This review is a bit all over the place, I understand - I would go back but I would stick to the pasta and pray someone else was treating. So this just happened... 8:30 pm Saturday. Three women in their late 20s want to have a drink at an outside bar. Almost full bar and 6-7 empty high tops. No one inside. Hostess is rude upon arrival. We ask if we can sit outside to get drinks and dessert. Hostess goes to ask manager. Hostess and manager stand 20 feet away having a conversation that takes longer than it seemingly should. (At this point we privately discuss if we should just leave because hostess already made us feel unwanted.) Hostess returns and this is the conversation: Hostess: you can't sit at at a table but you can sit at the bar and get drinks Customer: great! Is there room for three of us? Hostess: probably not. Customers: uh... Okay. Aaaand scene. This was absurd and a total buzz kill. Way to turn away business and completely leave a bad taste in our mouths. We haven't been this dissatisfied with a restaurant in a long time. La Stazione is the textbook example of: price gouging. Highlights--- PRICES We cannot overemphasize checking with your server the cost of over-priced "specials menu." If you don't, you'll likely be taken (see below). WINE LIST: Extensive, but far too many California wines to be taken seriously for an "authentic" Italian restaurant/cellar. MENU: We made the mistake and didn't inquire about the prices on the "Specials Menu" and we paid dearly (pun intended) when the check came: Nearly $50 for an over-cooked veal chop and $30 for "fresh", extremely oily Fettuccine Alfredo. We based the Specials on the regular menu---we clearly got gouged. STAFF You'll have about 3-4 servers (none of whom communicate with one another). The servers are semi-educated on menu items, know nothing about wine, they're overly attentive, and not very well trained. Every time we put our forks/knives down to talk, someone would run over, hands already on our plate, asking if they could clear the table---we had to, no less than eight times, tell the servers/busboys we were not done. The manager/owner should have been more attentive to the dining room---he never left the bar. ATMOSPHERE The building is a historical landmark, an old Train Station. However, the interior is not designed well (nothing historic about it) We believe attention to detail carries to various aspects of a restaurant and La Stazione's lack thereof is more than clear with their food, service, and general amateur-hour presence. (Also, there's a creepy camera in the dining room.) UNIFORMS The men wear black pants and black long sleeve collared shirts. Women also wear black, but their "uniforms" are more in line for a cocktail waitress at a seedy club than a restaurant that advertises high-end Italian food (high-end they certainly are not). CLEANLINESS Visually, very clean. OVERALL We will never return, nor will we recommend La Stazione to anyone. We eagerly await a restauranteur that is serious about food and the attention to detail a Historical Landmark and village deserve. read more

Under new management, so I figured I'd write a review. I'm local, and frequent this place often. It's historically a good bet amongst locals for a decent and inexpensive dinner, usually. I visited this evening for a belated anniversary celebration with my husband. Positives: attentive, polite staff, a pleasure to be served. The scampi gamberi risotto was excellent (well, the rice was. See negatives below re: shrimp). Delicious seared broccoli rabe. Good wine choices; the Sauvignon blanc (New Zealand) paired excellently with my seafood choices. Negatives: service was very slow. The shrimp were overcooked, as were the mussels. It's a shame to obliterate seafood; I was hoping for melty, not tough and chewy. However, the sauces were delicious for both the mussels in wine/garlic and the risotto gamberi/parmigiano. Poor beer choices, nothing on tap. Overcooked chicken and broccoli in the Pasta di Rosa. (Again, sauce was tasty). Salads took far too long to arrive, and one came with the wrong dressing. For a chopped iceberg lettuce and grated carrot, there should be less than 5 minutes turnaround time. Overall: Tasty sauces, overcooked seafood; poor beer choice, good wine choice; attentive, polite service, but too long of a wait for service. For New Paltz, this is a pretty good italian restaurant. The portions are decent and the food is fairly inexpensive. Nothing mind blowing but it is a very cozy and comfortable place to eat that is good for a romantic dinner or a family dinner. I would not recommend the appetizer sampler since everything was pretty much battered then fried which somehow made it all taste the same at the end. read more

We waited too long to be asked if we wanted drinks (we did); when given the menu with the beer and wines-by-the-glass list, all the good beers (except Sam Adams) were crossed off, and so were half the wines! So, if you're OK with Bud Light, go there... Our table had no candle on it and the service just wasn't very attentive. Had mussels and clams oreganata appetizers. The mussels were overcooked and shriveled and served with barely any sauce, which is too bad because at least that was tasty. The clams were nice and meaty but the bread crumb topping very gummy and of an odd consistency, though quite flavorful. Had the St Peter's fish (very very good) and the Zuppa de Pesce with Linguine (eh ... the calamari was a bit tough and the shrimp had their tails on -- a pet peeve of mine). We didn't bother with dessert. I was sorry we went here, as my intent was to try a different place. I was not impressed with this restaurant, although, it is worth noting that I ate outside on the patio and only ordered a pizza, so take my review for what it's worth. It's not a bad location across from the Water Street shops and along the Wallkill Valley Rail Trail and in good weather the patio offers good people watching opportunities. The service was fairly good and the owner even took a moment to make sure I was being served, although, I could sense that he put his staff on edge by hovering so much. This was my first visit to La Stazione and apparently they recently began serving pizza's (bar pies). I ordered the margarita pizza and it wasn't very good. The sauce was rather bitter and they were a bit too heavy handed with the basil - the flavor is not meant to overwhelm the pizza, it's meant to enhance it. The crust was ok, but the flavor was lacking big time and not something I'd order again. read more

This is my second favorite spot in New Paltz. Hands down favorite Italian in the area. It's a bit pricey but hey, when you celebrate your birthday ALL month it can be fun. Just fast the next day. Incredibly disappointing. Used to eat here regularly several years ago and had always found the food tasty and prices reasonable. Sadly that's no longer the case. Mediocre food at inflated pricing. My Manhattan girlfriend agreed. To start, the servers are warm and friendly, but not appropriately trained or attired. Felt like diner staff...not there's anything wrong with that when eating at a diner. No polish, no timing, no professionalism. Couldn't articulate anything of value about the wine list. The red sauce was bland and weak. Searched for flavor...peppers, garlic, onion...and failed. How can an Italian restaurant not have a great marinara? The sirloin was tasteless. It was a hunk of meat covered in an inexplicable brown sauce. No idea why. It added nothing. All steak needs is salt. Pricing is beyond what's reasonable for this quality of food. $18 apps. Robbery. My husband and I took an impromptu visit from NYC to new paltz. Walked the town and stumbled upon la stazione by accident. Best accident ever. Beautiful outdoor seating, very accommodating staff, and the food was incredible. Great wine selection, and while the owner came over we anxiously mentioned how fresh his seafood was and how delicious the home made pasta was. My wife and I have been to this restaurant many times. Food was always good but service was at best tolerable. We have been back several times in the last few months and changes have been made. A new owner who is always there and involved. Service time have gotten better and the menu is evolving. Last trip I had a Porterhouse that was outstanding and my wife had a Salmon Steak that she said was the best she has ever had. She has eaten a lot of Salmon and should know. If you want to be part of a new dining experience at La Stazione try it one more time. You will see the effort to rework the restaurant. read more

Again food was phenomenal, waiter was great as usual. The owner came over to our table spoke with us and then proceeded to give me a bottle of wine for as Birthday gift! Worst Restaurant experience in years. Begging for water, repeatedly asking for bread ridiculous at this price point. When we asked to see the wine list the waiter informed us he doesn't recommend it " we are out of most of the wines on the list" . I found that hard to believe as there are dozens of bottles on a shelf all around the restaurant. So I gave him three choices and he came back and said he couldn't find any of them, but someone else would look. A waitress came by with a bottle that was not one of the three, but we accepted it anyway because at this point we had finished our appetizers. Then our waiter disappeared. we saw him occasionally but did not return to our table. We had to flag down other staff for service. At the end another waiter came over to offer us a dessert menu. We declined as things were just going downhill all evening. I thought it was nice another waiter noticed we had no service and stepped in. Then shortly our waiter reappeared and went through the same ritual again. I guess they don't communicate with each other. On the bottom of the menu it states WE RESERVE THE RIGHT TO ADD A 20% GRATUITY TO THE CHECK. I assumed this meant large tables or people sharing plates ( which they have a charge for ) . So to top off a very disappointing evening, we were charged a 20 % gratuity. I mentioned it to the owner who said he couldn't do anything about it but would address it if we returned. 30 years in the restaurant business and I have never witnessed such a pretentious attitude. Now I understand why we couldn't get into Lombardi's on this Saturday night, completely booked, and the Brahaus had a line out the door into the parking lot!
