My go-to lunch spot in Redlands! My friends and I love it here and whenever we are struggling to decide where to eat we are always happy to come here. I have been to this location and the one in Rancho several times and I must say I prefer this one for sure! I have tried most of their cocktails and many items on their menu such as the short rib tacos, smash burger, Mac and cheese, etc. Everything that I have ordered has always been great! I have never had bad food from here before, they cook everything to perfection! Service is amazing as well!! They are generally quite busy here, but are always as quick as they can be to seat you. On one of my prior visits, they forgot to cook the chicken at the same time as the mac and cheese so it came out maybe a few minutes later separate from the Mac (they apologized and warned me) so they decided to just take the Mac and cheese off the check for the inconvenience. I already loved it here and thought they had amazing service, but this exceeded my expectations, they are great here! I love the interior here as well, all the mirrors in the back and the unique chandeliers give this place a nice vibe. Will def be back many many more times! read more

Girl's night out couldn't have went any better--we had lovely and attentive service despite it being so busy for Friday night. We live in the area and came here for a burger and onion rings. The photos of the onions rings looked good. It was on a Monday at about 6pm and busy, but we were seated right away. We ordered a couple drinks and bacon wrapped dates. We were served the drinks right away and the dates shortly afterwards. Unfortunately, the dates were barely warm. We sent them back, getting a replacement order that was slightly warmer. Presentation of the burger and onion rings was great. However, one of my five onion rings were hot. While the bun on the burger looked appetizing, the texture was gritty and dry. The meal had potential but was really awful for something that is so easy to put together. The atmosphere and the vibe in this restaurant was quite romantic. The people seemed to have been there on dates and it was just very nice. The service was alright in my opinion, but could have been better, for example the waiter was rushing around and for a simple order it felt like we waited a long time until we could tell her the order. Also the menu was all oily and had food stains on it. It was not even laminated. Now the food felt cheap and just so salty. The Mac N' Cheese was definitely out of those instant Mac N' Cheese you get from Costco. The shrimp tacos were super small and overtly salty. Tonight, 12/29/2025, the restaurant kept its outdoor patio area wide open to the back of the indoor dining room. Cold air blew constantly through the restaurant as we tried to enjoy our meal. It's 53°outside! No matter where you are seated, you must endure whatever the outdoor temperature is. Making your diners miserable keeps them eating and hurrying out in order to make room for more uncomfortable people. To make matters worse, The State kept all of their ceiling paddle fans running helping to make the room even colder. The food, the food? The food was good but cooled off much faster because the dining room was unheated. If you choose The State, make sure you take your food home where you can eat it in comfort. read more

We came to Redlands in the downtown area to celebrate my husband's b-day with a fun day trip. We picked The State for his dinner celebration and I called to make reservations. The girl on the phone told me to do Open Table, they only way. Why pick up the phone then? How hard is it to handle it. I made it and they had a table for us ready to go on the patio when we got there. The decor is nice, modern with beautiful lamps and great lighting in general. The patio is heated, there are lamps above and it has nice views of the street. Menu- codebar, go online, that is it! Our waitress Darcy was very nice, attentive, helpful, checked on us, but not to an annoying degree, pleasant and fun to chat with. We got Amber Ale-s on tap, very nice and started by sharing their poutine which is made in a different way with the melted cheese on top, fries, pork belly, gravy underneath. It is fun to see how everyone makes it and we loved the melted cheese on top, delicious. Then we continued with their Mac and Cheese (more cheese? yes, too good to miss) with fusili pasta. Once again, nicely made with bread crumbs on top. Our last stop for entree- we got a side of onion rings, little doughy pillows of goodness, highly reccomend! Have a bit a donut consistency in a good way. Darcy brought us 3 sauces for it after chatting with her: ranch, garlic aioli, Korean mayo, spicy and good! Great sauces to dip some of the best onion rings we ever had (in my top 3!). We wanted to share their creme brulee and asked for a b-day candle and Darcy offered my b-day boy ice-cream from the house, that's what they do for birthdays here. Nice. The State is pretty good! This was my second time going to their happy hour (Mon-Fri 11am-6pm). I got their bacon wrapped dates for $7 and spinach & artichoke grilled cheese for $10, both of which were delicious! The service was okay this time around. The hostesses seemed annoyed and didn't even smile or greet us upon entry, then printed the menus and walked towards the tables without letting us know they'll be seating us. We were initially seated at the back of the restaurant, where it's very very dark. It does go with the restaurant's speakeasy vibes though. We then requested to move to the patio for some light, which they accommodated. We also requested to open the floor-to-ceiling windows, which interestingly enough, they said they could not (it was sunny and cool with no rain or wind). Came here for dinner and previously had good experiences. However this time I strayed from My usual and got the spicy chicken sandwich at the waiters suggestion. I do not recommend this sandwich, it was thin chicken and had a burnt flavor, even my gf tried a piece and said it was burnt tasting. I only ate 1/4 of the sandwich and just filled up on fries. The wait for a table was ~1 hour long but we snatched up the last 2 seats at the bar! The brussels sprouts were crispy and flavorful, and the addition of goat cheese in this was an amazing choice! Poutine: 7/10. I customized the tacos (they did not get them right) but they tasted pretty good. Mac n Cheese had a wonderful flavor, but was served lukewarm. I was just going to take it back to the hotel and reheat later on, but the nice lady hostess was like How was it Mija? When I told her she said, No, you don't pay for what you don't like.
