We were just strolling Downtown Redlands on an early evening on the Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend. I thought it would be busier but luckily for our party of four it seemed like people had either left town for the long weekend or they were all hanging out at the Mountain Grove and/or Citrus Plaza areas. Good for them! Better for us!! We quickly looked at the menu and found dishes we would be interested to try and when I asked about the wait they said there was no wait! We were seated quickly and had time to relax and enjoy the ambiance. You feel like you've almost stepped through a space time continuum with the low lights of antique style bulbs along the walls and overhead. I unfortunately did not take any pictures but I imagine if I had, the members of my party would have looked even younger than they usually do because of the soft lighting. The bar looked really classy--almost like an old European tavern. The server was Erica and she was friendly and had a great smile. My husband's brother in law wanted to try poutine for the first time and he called it "proteineo" when he ordered it and Erica laughed gently and said it was great and she would be calling it that from now on. I abstain from beef but the others really liked the appetizer. My husband and his brother in law had the brisket tacos and agreed they were flavorful and filling. My sister in law had the grilled cheese with spinach and artichoke and enjoyed it as she shared the other half with her husband since the portions are generous. I ordered the shiitake mushroom risotto which was also filling but not very flavorful (because of the lack of protein, I'm sure). Came here for family dinner. Ordered the salad, grilled cheese/artichoke sandwich, and shrimp tacos. Overall enjoyed the food quality. Felt the onion rings were on point. Nicely fried and seasoned. Came to visit family in Redlands and wanted to take them to a nice dinner, to a known upper scale restaurant. Like the one in Victoria Gardens. We ordered medium steaks and got well done and medium well. It took forever to chew a piece. The Mac and cheese had no cheese or very to little lacking an abundance of flavor. Mashed potatoes tasted like paste, ALSO lacking in flavor. The fries were a 10, as well as the beignets -10! My first Tito's tonic was a vodka soda (normal mistake) they fixed it but had zero carbonation also lacking ice, I let it slide since I just walked up to the bar and let them know it was soda not tonic, then I had to ask for another cup of ice since my 6 cubes melted immediately, they were very kind, as was I - since I am a bartender for a fast paced restaurant- I ordered another one but this time let them know there was no carbonation. And it took a while for them to fix it, they brought it back with a tiny bit carbonation but at this point it was time consuming and we had a baby with us. Anyhow, service seemed timid but sweet. I really want to love this place, but this is the second bad experience I've had there. The 1st was being told they were "trying something new" and were reservation only. The place was pretty empty and they wouldn't even let us sit at the tables near the bar. They offered to make us a reservation but the soonest would be in 20 mins...again the place was pretty empty. This time we went after the car show today, were greeted and seated right away. We sat for at least 15mins and never got service. Multiple staff walked by us busing tables, checking on the table next to us, etc. We left when another party of 3 was seated and immediately acknowledged by a server and even served water. Again the tables and booths were mostly empty. The bar and patio were hopping, but we were one of only a couple tables. read more

Picked this place based on reviews, but would say its overrated. We ordered the Poutine and the Drunken Pig. The Poutine was not a traditional Poutine and was too rich to eat as a meal. It needed more fries, it only had a few soaked in the gravy. The dish was mainly cheese. The Drunken Pig did not end up having much flavour and the ingredients did not compliment each other even though it sounded so good on paper. The cocktails however were delicious and I would highly recommend the Bee's Please. We ended with a bread pudding that had some good bites but was not consistent throughout. Recently ate here, ordered the new steak frites and their house margarita and was not disappointed what so ever. The steak was well seasoned by itself and with the additional chimichurri sauce i felt gave it a complete flavor. The fries had their own flavor and it balanced out with the steak bites. Our waitress gave a good, friendly service. The drink was average strong, so after the third/fourth a uber should be called. It was kinda dark inside the restaurant which added to the ambiance but if you cant see well it might be a issue. I would recommend and it a nice date location. read more

We came here for brunch. You can reserve a table which is a plus. Service was just okay. They should get more staff on the weekends. The demand is definitely there. Great atmosphere. Inside is dark and moody a few booths available and outside is great for people watching. Food for brunch was just okay. We also ordered a wedge salad which was very good. Unique addition to the wedge is cashews. Bacon wrapped dates are also tasty. These items are available during happy hour. The girl next door cocktail is delicious and on the sweeter side. Overall - 7.5/10 Food: the food was priced modestly and was pretty affordable. However, even with the modest prices, the quality and taste was mediocre at best. Anything with meat was extremely dry (yes even the fried chicken w/ waffles) as well as the Machaca burrito and many other things on the menu. Truth be told, the only thing that wasnt dry were the eggs but I would hope that sunny side up eggs aren't dry. Overall - 2/10 Overall - 4/10 won't be returning. read more

We love coming here for lunch during the week. Servers are always pleasant, the food is great, and the drinks are made well. We like the rotating burger of the month. We tend to order the same things so having that special menu item is a nice change. This genuinely saddens me to write because I usually enjoy this restaurant, but after experiencing this 3 times in the last month or two, I feel it's important to share. The food and ambiance are great, but the first impression at the front has consistently felt unwelcoming. I'd encourage management to review how guests are being greeted during brunch/day shifts by a particular woman. I always try to give grace for an off day, but repeatedly not being acknowledged or greeted upon walking in does not feel welcoming, especially when another staff member usually has to step in and engage with guests instead. Walked in on a Saturday afternoon for a late lunch and there was no wait. We got seated and our waiter informed us we'd have a 90 minute dining limit. The menu is a QR code but they also have a small printed out menu with some deals they have. The have 3 restrooms next to the kitchen. The overall decor is unique and nice. For the food I usually go for their burgers and so far they've all tasted great! I asked for things on the side such as pickles, jalapeños, and ranch. They did not charge an extra fee for it so that was a big plus. I got the State burger with fries (extra charge) and it was cooked very well. I'd return to this location. Just be aware that parking in front is limited as there are many businesses in the area. There's a parking structure up the street too. read more

Burgers come out raw here. Ordered medium. Took a couple of bites from it before noticing how raw it was (the lights are very dim) Politely asked our waitress to make it right. We were given the hamburger back with chunks of raw meat. We got the message loud and clear from our waitress and cook. The place was not busy and they were well staffed. My boyfriend and I visited last night, and while the atmosphere was nice, the experience left us disappointed. We're a biracial couple he's white, I'm Black and the difference in how we were treated compared to other guests was hard to ignore. The restaurant wasn't busy at all we were one of only three couples sitting on the patio. The manager, Brittany, was very attentive and friendly with the other couples but noticeably distant with us. At first, I thought maybe it was because we hadn't ordered food yet and were just having drinks. But when she brought my second drink, she simply set it on the table without saying a word or acknowledging us, then walked away. My boyfriend and I looked at each other wondering what the issue was. Our waitress was polite and even suggested a drink for my boyfriend, which we appreciated. He ordered me the short rib tacos, but after about 20 minutes, she came back only to ask if he was ready to order food. He said no, but by then, my tacos still hadn't arrived. Another 20 minutes and a third round of drinks later still no food. With the restaurant nearly empty, there was really no reason for the delay, so we decided to leave. It's disappointing to spend money somewhere and still feel overlooked and uncomfortable. Every guest deserves to feel welcomed and respected regardless of who they are or who they're with. I truly hope management takes this feedback seriously and provides better training to ensure consistent, respectful service for everyone. read more

So we just wanted some good drinks and well, couldn't resist some of the shareables offered. But anyway, drinks is variable so I'm not gonna tell you what or what not to drink. But here, poutine is a fun way to enjoy fries, cheese curds, and meat. It's a fancier take on the yummy canadian snack so it was probably my favorite shareable. The bruschetta was decent for all it's worth but nothing to freak out about either. Take a bite and press on. The cheese plate was, well, it's kind of a filler item. You could easily make this at home if you do a local grocery store run but for all the lazies out there like me, this is a nice pairing with your drinks. Finally visited The State on a Tuesday Night. It was the perfect place for date night. It wasn't packed & the service was great. My husband and I arrived at around 8:30 & were seated immediately. I loved the dimmed lights & loved that they were playing alternative indie rock. Not too loud which was perfect, you can still have conversations. My husband ordered the Irish pub burger. He said it was very flavorful & good. The fries were delicious! I had the Velouté Chicken. The sauce was very good & the chicken so tender & juicy. The mash potatoes were a little bit on the dry side but I mixed it a little with the chicken sauce and made it better. I really liked this place, I would love to come back and try something else in the menu & would definitely recommend this place to anyone wanting to try it. read more

The place was clean and the atmosphere was nice. The music was a little too loud, therefore everyone in the restaurant raised their voices for conversation, making it artificially loud. Where things went wrong was with the service. The server, named Sarah, gave everyone a glass of ice water as we sat down, which is nice, but never asked for our drink order so we were left with only water for the entire visit. She took our orders, interrupting frequently,and we didn't see her again until she brought the check. Others brought the food, which is normal, but usually the server comes and checks on their guests. The waters were not being refilled. I had to stop eating and wait for someone to walk by to flag down and ask for a refill. Afterwards, they were never refilled again. The only reason for three stars and not one is because the food to pretty good. I had the double smasher. It was not as expensive as you might expect for this kind of restaurant, except they charge extra if you want fries with your hamburger (??). Not a good enough experience to return. read more
