Texas claims to have some of the best barbecue and needless to say I've yet to be impressed. Living in San Diego, I've tried a few different "Texas" barbecue joints here in SD and they all were the same......NOT THAT GOOD!!! While on a road trip I yelped Texas barbecue and this place came up as the top ranked in El Paso. Once again Texas barbecue came up short of impressive. This place was quite busy for a Monday but then again it was lunch time. They serve you your drinks in huge cups which is quite a good idea. Less need for a refill. Not sure if that's part of the whole "everything is bigger in Texas," or a strategy since the waitresses are always so busy. Either way it was great. The food it self was not that great. The beans were hard and not that tasty. So was the barbecue. In fact the meat was pretty dry. My last visit to this restaurant was thirty years ago--the State Line was a favorite back then for all you can eat ribs. The menu is printed to resemble a 1950's Big Chief writing tablet used in elementary school. I didn't see all you can eat ribs as a menu item but they did have family platters of all you can eat barbecue and sides that were combos of pick three or more meats. It was explained that you could order just one meat choosing ribs. I don't think I could break my record set in college for the number of ribs I could eat in a single meal so I chose the brisket platter this evening. You get to choose the lean or moist brisket, the fattier moist brisket is described on the menu as 2nd cut. I chose what I believed would be the tastier of the two--the 2nd cut brisket. I was happy with my choice but I did slip into BBQ judge mode grading the brisket serving on taste, appearance, and tenderness. The State Line brisket, sliced correctly against the grain had a narrow smoke ring, most, thick slices, and included narrower cut tender pieces. The plate included three sides: cole slaw-very creamy without being soupy, Pinto beans, and potato salad that had a pleasant tang. A plastic cup of extra BBQ sauce was nestled in the center of the plate although the brisket was dressed with more than enough sauce, perhaps too much. The decor of the restaurant was full of Western memorabilia including Western art, mounted deer antlers and Texas Longhorns, livestock trophies, framed enlarged antique postcards, and vintage advertising. There were two Antique ice boxes in the dining room that were used to store butter and margarine for replenishing the red basket at each table for the spreads to use on homemade bread that you could order with your meal. The spread choices in my basket were European style whipped butter blend, whipped honey spread, and the tiniest cube of real butter labeled dairy Wisconsin. Freshly brewed sweet and unsweetened Iced tea and sodas were served in 32 ounce plastic cups. My single lemon slice looked tiny in the huge cup. I'd come here again for barbecue, next time asking for the meat undressed, BBQ sauce on the side, and extra lemons for my tea. read more

I ordered the two meat plate with the marbled brisket and sausage. The plate was served with beans, coleslaw and potato salad. Yum! Meat was tender and juicy but drenched in BBQ sauce. My only complaint is that I wish they would ask if you want the BBQ sauce on the side or over the meat. Or if they even stated on the menu that it comes with BBQ sauce already on it. Don't get me wrong, the sauce is good but it was definitely overwhelming. You also have to try their fresh homemade bread with the honey spread, delicious!!!! Other than that, good atmosphere! Very casual and fun western style decoration. Played country music throughout. Friendly staff who didn't complain when we asked to split a check in a complicated manner. Waited less than 15 minutes on a Saturday afternoon, already a good start. Service was great and food was even better.

I'll start off by saying our server, Angel, was super nice and attentive towards our group. He was more than happy to have a steak cooked a little longer or to bring me my customary extra BBQ sauce! Food: I got the 3 meat combo (you can also choose 2 or 5 meats) and picked the turkey, marbled brisket, and pulled pork (Angel's rec). I enjoyed all 3 of them very much. All still had some juiciness to it, then topped with hella BBQ sauce! The soft bread they serve before your meal was fresh and warm! It went perfectly with the honey butter they put on your table. They have a standard beer on tap menu and I opted for the Fat Tire. It comes in a regular sized glass, while water or soft drinks come in buckets! Was I eating in Texas or New Mexico? We arrived with a group of 18 people and had to wait for about 30min which is fair for a Saturday evening. The waitress was very friendly and service in general was fast and great. The food arrived at the same time for everyone and it was very good! I had the two meats plate with ribs and brisket and the meat was tender, juicy and their BBQ sauce tasted very good, too. I'm also a fan of their interior decoration. A true Texan BBQ place with lots of charm and pictures, decorations and it just makes you feel like you're in the old west. read more

This was the absolute worst. I've been here for dinner before and it was great. I went for lunch today and won't ever do that again. The bread didn't arrive until halfway through the meal. My steak on the kabob was overcooked. The server asked if I wanted my meal replaced. I said just the one chunk of steak that was most over cooked. She left and came back with a saucer because I needed to PROVE to the manager that it was over cooked. I was finished eating before they ever got around to cooking a medium rare piece of meat and bringing it to me. $45 for two people to eat. I should have just thrown $45 out the window on the loop. In what world is sauce slathered so much on to the meat it actually splashes off the plate? ..and it was not even good! The burgers were beyond well done yet we had ordered medium-rare, the potato salad had average flavor.. it was endless disappointment. And way way too big of portions, quality over quantity doesn't apply here. They're surviving on the niche that the restaurant is over two states.... but only the restroom is in Texas... not worth the visit. Gone here our whole lives Their current service setup is cold, unfriendly, and extremely inefficient. They have 3-5 people standing around at the front hostess station while the bar is slammed taking to go orders, making drinks, filling orders, a, taking phone to go orders (phone just ringing and they almost never answer) and giving updates. Not one person ahead of me or behind me is happy (~10 people in line) If you want to sit outside (COVID) like a lot of people do, you have to wait in line at the bar to order and then wait in line to pick up your food, nevermind if it's ready and sitting and getting cold. We came here a while back when driving through Texas on vacation. There was a long wait on Saturday at about 5:30pm, about 45 minutes to an hour before we were seated. My boyfriend and son wanted to do the All You Can Eat, but I'm vegetarian, so we asked the server if they could make an exception on the whole table policy. She had to ask her manager, and they said ok. I did feel like they were a bit skeptical though, and checking to see if I was sneaking meat. I know everyone says things are bigger in Texas, but those soda cups, oh my!! I didn't know they made drink cups that size outside of 7-11. My son and bf clearly enjoyed their BBQ, and my food was good too, albeit quite greasy. The bread is good!! We told them that my son was 11, but when we got the receipt, they still charged the adult price. My son is tall and no one ever believes his age so I always have his passport with me, and I had it out ready to show them for proof of age. The server said it was fine and changed the price without checking the passport, but I could tell she didn't believe me. This was absolutely delicious! Came in with my family because people have only ever recommended this place for great food and a good atmosphere. Was immediately seated and greeted by our super nice server, Julian. Ordered the wings as the appetizer and I got the New York Strip as my entree. The wings were delicious, the sauce was tangy and left us wanting to order more. My steak was perfectly cooked to my liking and the seasoning was fantastic. The coleslaw was okay but the loaded baked potato was yummy! Really excellent service, our server was very attentive even though he was busy. Being new to Texas and El Paso, this place seems to be the highest rated BBQ joint so far. I wish I could agree. I have to agree with the 2 and 3 star reviewers and say that I have definitely had better and if this truly is the best BBQ in El Paso, I think I need to open my own joint. Now onto the details. Wife is a vegetarian so she got the "Grilled Vegetarian Kebobs" with a large baked potato, beans and slaw for sides and they were good according to her. I am a meatetarian and got the "5 Meat Smokehouse Combo" which is beef and pork ribs, brisket, one teeny sausage and smoked peppered turkey breast. Sides were beans, potato salad and slaw. Potato salad was 5 star, cole slaw was 4 star, beans were 5 star, they are on the dry side, but have a great bacon flavor. The meat. I agree with Michelle L. that the meat was clinging to the ribs for dear life. I tried to pull apart the beef ribs and it slipped out of my hands and splattered sauce all over, so I had to resort to cutting them with a knife. If you have to use a knife...do I need to say more? The brisket was smoked well, but the dry and tough over powered the smoke and flavor. The turkey was dry. The sausage was ok. We ordered a half a loaf of wheat bread based on the recommendations here and it was hot and fresh, and very dense. We chose to only have one slice each otherwise we would have been stuffed. Good stuff. The service was excellent and they seem to have that down here, which is why I gave them 3 stars and not 2. Of course restaurants fluctuate in that regard and you might experience an off night. Overall, we will go back but expectations are now appropriately lowered. Right before we were seated, they sat a party of 33...and with the huge portions at reasonable prices, I think that sums up what State Line does best. We were passing through El Paso on our recent roadtrip to AZ. Since it was dinner time, I looked through the Texas AAA book and came across this restaurant. We chose it, in part, due to easy access from I-10. The AAA guide raved about the bread and when we got to the restaurant, we saw some empty bowls labeled "yesterday's bread". So---much to our surprise---the bread wasn't free but we went and ordered a half loaf to see if it lived up to the hype. When we got it, well...let's say this...it doesn't live to the hype! It's ordinary bread cut thick and on the dry side. I think it would make good toast, however. My husband ordered the brisket and I ordered the platter that had a piece of BBQ chicken, some brisket and a sausage. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the portions were not too big. We thought the BBQ was good quality Texas style. Everything was moist and flavorful. Service was friendly and efficient. If we pass this way again, we would certainly go again but wouldn't waste our money on the bread. read more

Oh State Line, you were my first venture into BBQ territory, and while you were a great starter, I've moved on and grown up since then. If you've read my other reviews, then you'll know I'm a Franklin Follower (and of you don't know who Franklin is, then you aren't a BBQ aficionado ^_~). This is nowhere near as good. We ordered the Big Daddy (Flintstone style beef ribs) and the barbeque wings. The wings needed to have a little more char on them, they were too chickeny, if you know what I mean. The sauce on them made them a whole lot more appetizing. The ribs are always epic to behold, I mean, the rack is literally hanging off the plate! But...there's not much meat on them and it's got to have sauce. Great BBQ doesn't need sauce. However, any carnivore will appreciate gnawing on the bone. The specialty Margarita wasn't a delicious as I remembered. I must have been a young'un when I first drank them, but now it's just too much sweet and sour mix. All in all, not as delectable as I once remembered, but it's a nice place to bring guests. There are several all you can eat options to choose from, so come and get your fill. My daughter took me to this restaurant because it' one of my favorite for Father's Day. The food is usually good, but this day it was terrible. I do not believe they butcher them correctly as that fat membrane on the back of the rack of ribs is there- ruining their chance at rib. All are seasoned ok. Nothing special. We have been wanting to eat at Stateline since we moved to El Paso a few years back. We heard a lot of good things about this place. We ordered a whole rack of beef ribs plus the marbled brisket platter. The ribs were so dry and unflavored. Not tender at all. The brisket they gave us was ridiculously dry. We figured they gave us lean instead of marbled. We showed it to a staff member and asked if that was marbled. She said yes. We asked another waiter 10 minutes later. He looked at it and instantly said it was lean. He replaced it for us. My husband liked the marbled brisket. It was only okay for me -- I thought it was bland. On the other hand, their strawberry lemonade drink was delicious. Definitely not worth the $70+ we paid for. I don't think we'll be coming back. Brisket is thick cut in small squares and kind of tough/ chewy. BBQ sauce kind of tangy and sweet, slaw not very sweet and thick sliced, potato salad was okay but tasted like it is made with dill pickles instead of sweet. Ordered via Grubhub - it arrived very quickly, but the brisket was awful. Extremely dry and pretty much inedible. Also told us upon delivery that they no longer make a third of what we ordered, but we'd have to take that up with Grubhub, and that it isn't their problem. If you never had brisket or ribs you may find this place to be ok. For the regular Texan, this is below average. Food is dry and tasteless. Your generic smoked meat.
