The Stacks Coffee House is such a vibe and very much a "get in, lock in, and accidentally stay for three hours" kind of place. Wall to wall books, ceiling to floor cozy chaos, people on laptops doing serious focus work, and that soft lighting that makes you feel like you should absolutely be writing your novel or at least answering emails you've been avoiding. The community board alone is a whole moment... flyers everywhere, local artists, creatives, events, it basically tells you everything going on in the neighborhood if you just stand there long enough. Coffee is solid, space is super welcoming, and yes they do vegan pastries but they were sold out when we got there which just tells you everything you need to know. Popular for a reason. Love the energy, love the people, love the "we support local creatives and also mind our business" vibe. Highly recommend if you want a cute spot to work, people watch, or just feel like you're part of something a little more community centered. read more

If you love the idea of sipping coffee while surrounded by shelves of books, Stacks Coffeehouse is worth checking out. The vibe is cozy and a little mysterious thanks to the dim lighting and, as mentioned, shelves upon shelves of books. The space is definitely designed for lingering - there are plenty of tables to work or study from, bar seating with a view of the street, and space for small and larger groups. Depending on the day, you may not get a seat or at least not your preferred seat. Of course, as mentioned, one of the quirks here are the books everywhere. They have signs saying that they loan them out like a library, but to me it doesn't look like the books are organized in anyway. So it might be more for atmosphere than practicality. Food wise, they serve breakfast tacos until 1pm, and there's a good pastry selection, plus day-old baked goods available for half price. They do $1 drip coffee refills, but the coffee wasn't my favorite. All in all, great place for the vibe. Free street parking nearby. read more

I've been in a couple of times now, and both visits were great! The inside is spacious and has a warm vibe with all the books around you. We got coffees and breakfast tacos. The tacos are simple, but done well. The bacon and eggs were cooked well, and the salsa added a great kick. The lattes were smooth and flavorful. Go good for hanging out! Great vibe, great service, great coffee read more

The Stacks Coffeehouse place was PACKED on a Saturday morning. We arrived around 8:30AM and nearly every table was filled. There is one big table and several little 2-person tables. The ambience is very homey with the books on the walls and dimmed lights. There is some quiet music as well. Service was fast and kind. The staff kept up with the fast pace of the orders. 8oz latte was okay. It was not overly bitter and had a slight fruity taste. The coffee is pretty average in my opinion. I love that they sell tacos and that they host events in this space, which are all advertised inside. This cafe is not a good place for studying, however, since there are nearly no outlets and people kept coming in and out. It can get loud. Parking is free along the street. read more

The Stacks Coffeehouse - Coffee & Tea Near Me - Portland, Oregon

I found myself in North Portland after a delivery I just completed. I was hungry and wanted a coffee. I did a search for nearby coffee shops and The Stacks Coffeehouse popped up. Street parking, but I didn't have far to walk. It's a really cool space with shelves and shelves of books! The coffee shop was teeming with patrons, looked like a lot of people were working on laptops. I was able to squeeze in at a spot that faced the street. I ordered a soy latte and I got a vegan banana coffee cake. The soy latte was ok, but the coffee cake was super moist and tasted really good. So glad to have discovered this place! read more

I'm obsessed with The Stacks Coffeehouse. I really don't know what it is, but I feel so cozy and at home sitting at any of their little tables. All the full bookshelves, the soft warm lighting, the rain outside on a dark night. I'm literally waxing eloquent about it but I'm serious. I love that it's open later in the evening too. Another fun aspect is their creative writing nights on Tuesdays. They give you a writing prompt and leave you to free write for a couple hours. Such a fun idea! Their coffee is also really nice. I've tried their Mocha and their Chai so far, and both were very nice. read more

I'm so grateful I stumbled upon this gem! Such a cozy, playful, but relaxing environment. The staff seems genuinely happy to be there, the walls are covered with so many books, and the electrical outlets are abundant. What more could a girl ask for in a coffee shop? read more

Such a charming place! The staff were friendly, coffee was delicious. And, they have a good AC for the summer months!

Stacks of books? Good coffee? Yummy food? Cozy ambiance? What more could you ask for from a coffee shop? I think I just found my new, favorite coffee shop in Portland! I love books and I love coffee, so this place is just perfect for me. It can get a little crowded/loud, but The Stacks Coffeehouse is a great, cozy place to read, do some work, or catch up with friends. read more

Super cool concept, but I wouldn't even call it a coffee shop--it's more like a bookstore that just happens to sell coffee. The vibes are immaculate, the neighborhood is beautiful, and they host writing nights + poetry readings, which is a huge plus. But the coffee? So bad. I got a caramel latte, and it was so watered down it tasted like a Keurig gone wrong. Wish I had just brought my own drink. At least it was under $6. Would I come back? 100%--but for the ambiance, not the coffee read more

I've visited this coffee place a few times and just realized I had yet to write a review. If you like books and coffee, you'll enjoy a visit and might even become a regular! They've successfully created the atmosphere of a little neighborhood library that has a coffee house. Wifi is decent. The staff are kind and helpful and the food of choice are what they call "tacos" - little flour tortillas filled with a variety of options - each runs you $4.50 - one is a snack, two makes a nice meal. Coffee is your standard fare - nothing exceptional but certainly solid! read more

Truly one of the worst cups of coffee I've ever had. Undrinkable. Almost chemical. The barista was super rude and then gave me the wrong order and then after I corrected it they gave me an award winning pile of hot garbage. I'm still trying to get the taste out of my mouth. I think this place could be great, but it's too dark, too rude, over priced pastries and the coffee is bad, soooooooo I don't recommend read more

If I lived in Portland, I would be at Stacks all the time, like, to the point where the owners would probably ask if I could, you know, vary my choices. The stacks of books make you feel like you're in a homey coffeeshop but one that also makes excellent coffee and pastries. Although I don't usually like zucchini in baked goods, Stacks convinced me I could like a zucchini muffin. The service was also very friendly and easy and made me, a tourist, feel like a part of the neighborhood. read more

Man I love this place but wow. Nine bucks for a drip coffee and a small taco with a scoop of eggs a piece of bacon premade and lukewarm. I get it, it's a neighborhood place and a mom and pop but man. I just can't afford it I guess. I'm glad others can bc great vibe and owners. read more

Really good atmosphere and decent coffee but the food was not good- the breakfast taco was a lukewarm flour tortilla with scrambled eggs, a strip of bacon and some half melted cheese. Not the worst but definitely expected a little more effort from a Portland coffee shop read more

Cozy and kind of busy coffeeshop. Just the kind of vibes and environment I look for in a place like this with the fall gloom. I just got there before there were almost no tables available. Mixture of people on their laptop, reading a book, or enjoying some coffee and food with a group of people. Coffee was great. I hate I ate already because the breakfast tacos looked tasty! Guess I'll have to come back again and try it! read more

I liked this spot. Its clearly a cool gem in the area. A lot people seemed to be regulars. I love any spot where the employees remember the customers by name and drink. The idea is really cool as well. Its basically a library coffee shop. I could see myself walking in with a good book and grabbing some coffee and treats and just chilling for the day. The vibe is great. Customers were bringing in so many dogs and it made me miss my dogs. I would recommend. Portland is the land of cool breweries and coffee shops. read more

I popped in to this cute coffee shop for a quick rest & coffee. I love the decor with the floor to ceiling shelves of books. The barista was really nice & I tried their Spring drink special, the Lavender Latte. I love lavender beverages and this latte was very good (I had mine with oat milk), and a nice hot temp as well (I've had lukewarm lattes elsewhere). They have a few food options as well, including a couple hot breakfast sammies and some baked goods, so good to know for future reference. read more

Don't care how good your coffee is, if you're rolling your eyes and sighing while taking my order as if my patronage is an inconvenience to you- find a new job because you don't belong in customer service. So tired of crappy service and rude emo behavior being the norm in Portland. It's not hard to be kind. Regret spending $20 here read more

I love the library concept of this coffee shop. In a city with many coffee shop options, its important to set yourself apart and I think this place does just that. They serve Rose City Coffee, Smith Tea, and a few baked good and taco options. I had an iced americano and it was tasty. But I was more impressed with the library theme, the amount of books they have, and the library club to check out books. Would love to work from here or just stop in again. Too bad its a bit of a trek for me. read more

The service wasn't very friendly when we approached the counter. They were all on their phones. Not the most inviting environment for a coffee spot. The coffee we ordered was average to below average. For the price you can find better Tasting lattes. The lattes weren't presented well. The pastries were good but slightly overpriced in my opinion about 4-4.50$ each. Will most likely not be coming back. read more

This place is awesome. We just moved out of State to Portland and I gotta say I think we lucked out with this coffeehouse being so close to our home. I ordered an iced oat milk vanilla latte. Full bodied, well balanced and not too sweet. The staff was friendly. You can check out books for free here when you sign up for a free store library card. It's nice and quiet if you want to bring your laptop and work a bit. The breakfast taco ain't bad either! read more

DELICIOUS breakfast tacos, and great veggie options. I got soy chorizo and veggie tacos - they came with amazing hot green salsa. You must visit NoPo and come to this Coffeehouse. Don't call it a coffee shop. From the moment you walk in you feel at home. It's lined with books, kick ass music is playing. The barista is friendly and makes you feel right at home. You are only a stranger once rings true. Are you hungry? Breakfast tacos are on the menu, and day old items are half price. I ordered two Chai Tea Lattes and the quality was apparent. It wasn't just flavored water like in some places where your Bucks don't go far. It's a great place to get some work done or have a meeting or just catch up with buddies. Are you a book reader? I was thrilled when I saw this spot in NE PDX. Coffee and shelves laden with books minus the chaps of Powell's? Sign me up! I walked in hoping that I would be just as amped about the IRL experience as the VR one. And gosh, I was not disappointed the service was so kind and generous in demeanor? The space was comfortable to work in (yes there are plug ins). Carrying on a conversation in here does not bring the wrath of others to bear on you. The tables are a great size for books and a community. And PS the background music isn't creepy. Give this place a shoot. Seriously. I will be back. read more

The Stacks Coffeehouse - Yes the lighting in the photo is terrible, that's because my excitement was extreme. - Coffee & Tea Near Me - Portland, Oregon

Truly one of my favorite coffee shop atmospheres, and I've spent a LOT of time in a LOT of coffee shops. I drive from Vancouver at least once a week to relax (or knock out some work) at The Stacks. The books lining the walls (which are all available to check out!) make this place a book lover's paradise. It can get busy during peak coffee hours on Fridays, but everyone here is so friendly and strangers often share tables and start conversations with each other. I highly recommend The Stacks if you're looking for a great neighborhood spot with good people, good music, good vibes, and good coffee. read more

The perfect neighborhood coffee shop! Amazing breakfast tacos and drip coffee--what more could you ask for?! My sister lives down the street and swears by this place. I'm in town for the holidays and decided to give it a try. The owners were working on thanksgiving day (note: tremendous effort!). You can tell they knew everyone who came in--it was more than great customer service; it was a genuine caring about their coffee community! Everything about this place is tremendous! I visited the spot on 7/5. I ordered a cappuccino and a breakfast taco. While the coffee and food were delicious, I ended up asking for a to-go cup because of the service. The barista was rude. She had attitude the entire time. I asked her where the lid and cups were located, she would point. Though helpful, she was not welcoming. Additionally, she was playing aggressive music fairly loud. As I left, I asked another customer, who moved from inside to the chairs outside, if she had been to this spot before. She said no, but did say she took her book outside because the noise was too loud. The atmosphere is inviting and I love the layout with the bookcases and roomy seating area. Definitely has potential if the barista changes her attitude. I won't be back. read more
