The Stacks Coffeehouse: Soy Latte with a Banana coffee cake (vegan)
Chiemi N.

I found myself in North Portland after a delivery I just completed. I was hungry and wanted a coffee. I did a search for nearby coffee shops and The Stacks Coffeehouse popped up. Street parking, but I didn't have far to walk. It's a really cool space with shelves and shelves of books! The coffee shop was teeming with patrons, looked like a lot of people were working on laptops. I was able to squeeze in at a spot that faced the street. I ordered a soy latte and I got a vegan banana coffee cake. The soy latte was ok, but the coffee cake was super moist and tasted really good. So glad to have discovered this place!

Super cool concept, but I wouldn't even call it a coffee shop--it's more like a bookstore that just happens to sell coffee. The vibes are immaculate, the neighborhood is beautiful, and they host writing nights + poetry readings, which is a huge plus. But the coffee? So bad. I got a caramel latte, and it was so watered down it tasted like a Keurig gone wrong. Wish I had just brought my own drink. At least it was under $6. Would I come back? 100%--but for the ambiance, not the coffee

Stacks of books? Good coffee? Yummy food? Cozy ambiance? What more could you ask for from a coffee shop? I think I just found my new, favorite coffee shop in Portland! I love books and I love coffee, so this place is just perfect for me. It can get a little crowded/loud, but The Stacks Coffeehouse is a great, cozy place to read, do some work, or catch up with friends.

The ambiance was on point. I was able to work and enjoy the sunshine through the windows while I people watched! Loved the place no rushing and great community space!

Cozy space with friendly folks, quiet jazz on the sound system, surrounded by books. What could be better? Authentic Austin breakfast tacos too!

Drip and a couple half priced day old treats!!

I liked this spot. Its clearly a cool gem in the area. A lot people seemed to be regulars. I love any spot where the employees remember the customers by name and drink. The idea is really cool as well. Its basically a library coffee shop. I could see myself walking in with a good book and grabbing some coffee and treats and just chilling for the day. The vibe is great. Customers were bringing in so many dogs and it made me miss my dogs. I would recommend. Portland is the land of cool breweries and coffee shops.

Coffee shop wall wisdom.

Bananas foster French toast: 10/10 buttery, sweet caramelized bananas, great for dessert or breakfast if you're a sweet breakfast kind of person. Chicken fried steak with sausage gravy: 7/10 there a lot of chewy bits in steak and it was already a very thin cut. Also comes with scrambled eggs and potatoes. Potatoes were the best part since they were seasoned very well. Chicken and biscuit: 8/10 classic chicken and biscuit Shrimp and grits: 7/10 grits felt really heavy to eat and the shrimp was salty. It comes with an egg under the shrimp and a biscuit on the side so that helped dilute the salt a bit

The space itself is smaller and intimate, so bringing a larger group than about 4-5 people might not be ideal. The ambiance definitely gave Italy vibes, for sure. The chicken liver mousse was a good consistency, paired with the figs gave a nice balance between sweet and savory. The steak frites was a classic, steak was a good portion and cooked medium rare, but I'm sure if you wanted it more cooked through, you could make that request. The fries were definitely a standout, great texture and the garlic flavor gave a good contrast to the steak. My favorite dish was the dessert, the flaky crust gave a nice texture to the cream insides. I'm a huge passionfruit fan, so once I saw it was on the menu, I knew I had to try it. It didn't disappoint and I would definitely come back just for this dish alone. Overall a solid experience and would recommend people to try Canard out at least once!

Mothers is a great place to eat downtown, but I'd recommend making reservations or at least calling ahead. They get busy! The food came out quickly, hot, and prepared correctly. All items were quite tasty. It's not exactly gourmet in terms of you taking a bite and thinking it's the best thing you've ever eaten, but it's solid. I really want to try dinner there. Ambience is busy and bustling. Really it's what you'd expect for a downtown diner. This is the kind of place I would take people to who are coming in from out of town and I'm not sure how adventurous they are (mom & pop from Ohio for example) We will definitely eat here again.

But when our server was with us, they were very nice and patient with my questions and requests. It's a bit loud when the place is on the full side, making it difficult to have a conversation. I wouldn't bring my girlfriend who is hard of hearing, at least with a group. I'd be curious to try more of the menu. I was very much not wowed by the breakfast. The beverages were however very nice, and I recently had the cobbler dessert and it looked amazing and tasted better. We had the coffee (Extracto, love.), I had a really good hef and my mother a very well balanced Bellini that I was very pleasantly surprised with trying. From what I saw, the lunch sounds very good and I'd be more apt to recommend folks give that a shot if they happened to be going there too. I'm not sure if I'd recommend as a must go stop. Vibe wise, the ambience is overall really nice. I think having rolled flatware, even with just upgraded napkins, would better complete the aesthetic you initially see and feel. This would also connect with the price point of the food and quality of the beverages. As a fellow server, on that note I would expect more consistent stronger visual appearance standards with servers. (Sorry guys! But some of you looked great!) Overall, I'd definitely join a friend for coffee and lunch over there in the future. Just wouldn't be my top pick for a celebratory brunch or intimate dinner with a date or friends and fam.

I went with the classic combat loadout: two eggs over-medium, bacon, crispy hash browns, and a biscuit with a side of country gravy... HOOAH! Execution? Nailed it. Eggs cooked perfectly, bacon thick and meaty, hash browns plentiful and done right, and a massive biscuit drowning in gravy. Mission accomplished. I left full, satisfied, and oddly respected. They are light, airy and not too sweet. For breakfast, I had the Ed's scramble, which had a ton of veggies in it, but also cheese. It was served with a ranchero sauce and sour cream. After we ordered, I went to the bathroom and the food was already out when I came back to the table. I ordered a salmon benedict, so it did not seem like it was "made to order." The salmon benedict, although highly recommended by the waitress, was extremely fishy, even though the "hollandaise sauce" (which had no depth of flavor, and was just thick) covered the entirety of the egg, salmon, and english muffin. It came with cheesy hash browns which again had no depth of flavor. Cheese makes anything tasty but it was just too much. The service, while friendly, was not attentive. We were unsure who our server was and I had to flag down the server for the bill and then to take my card 10 minutes later.
