I've been here three times since they opened two weeks ago. It's the neighborhood coffee shop I'd wanted for years. It's exactly what I wanted -- and much more. Good coffee freshly brewed; great espresso drinks well and quickly prepared (I twice had a decaf latte that was tasty, beautiful, and fast), and a larger than expected food menu. All as I had hoped. What was unexpected were three things: beer/wine, great crowd of people, and COMEDY!! That's right, stand up, slightly better than mediocre, real laugh-inducing comedy. They come as a troupe on Wednesday night. Okay, they're not great -- not ready for prime time. Great addition to the neighborhood. We stopped by during the soft opening and enjoyed coffee and croissants. Then we recently came back for comedy and beers. They comedy was excellent, the beer selection was solid, and we loved the truffle tots. It will definitely be a staple in our line up. read more

The Square Root is one of the best parts of living in Roslindale. Staff are lovely, food is good, drinks are cheap, and there's live entertainment nearly every night. The pub quiz with Adam is a highlight, and I love that they have jazz sessions every so often. So glad to have such a great venue in my neighborhood. read more

Vegans Don't Bother. Unless you want a PBJ, the only sandwich option for a vegan is the Garden Sandwich, which at $9.10 is the most expensive sandwich on the menu. Given its description: Hummus, Lettuce, Tomato, Carrot, Cucumber, Onion, Dijon with hummus as the first listed ingredient, you might expect it to contain enough hummus to provide its eater with a reasonable portion of protein. After all, the roast beef sandwich contains mostly roast beef and the tuna salad sandwich contains mostly tuna salad, giving its eaters an adequate portion of protein for their meal. The Garden Sandwich however contains mostly lettuce and onion. After three bites, I wondered if they had forgotten the hummus altogether so I opened the sandwich to see. I had to poke around to find it, but in a narrow stripe down the center of the bread was a thin schmeer of hummus, at most one tablespoon, mixed with the Dijon. It was as if the hummus were considered a condiment, there to lend a slight flavor like the Dijon, rather than the top ingredient of the sandwich. Imagine if the roast beef sandwich or the tuna salad sandwich had been constructed in the same manner, with the barest of schmeers of meat. Everyone would recognize that as wrong, a rip off even. Remember they are charging $9.10 for the Garden Sandwich. $9.10 for lettuce, onion, tomato, carrot, cucumber, Dijon and a decorative garnish of hummus. Restaurants need to remember that vegans and vegetarians need protein just like meat eaters do, and it just isn't right to charge them through the nose for the veggies that would be included as complimentary in meat sandwiches. Their coffee is good, but surprisingly the only decaffeinated coffee they offer is espresso. Only dairy milk and half-n-half are available to add yourself to your coffee. They do have almond and soy milks, but these are not listed anywhere as available and are kept behind the counter so you have to ask for them. read more

We were at a store nearby today and asked about where we can grab a quick, yummy sandwich to go before we headed out on the road. Turns out our experience at Square Root left us with anything but. Not only did the staff who didn't observe many appropriate hygienic practices while we waited, and waited forget one of the drinks we ordered, but I watched the person preparing the sandwich we ordered with no tomatoes- (allergy to raw tomatoes) - come out to confer with another guy at the counter about just noticing the ordered request said no tomatoes, and the coworker (who seemed like the manager) told him to just take them off. He returned from the little sandwich alcove with the sandwich order in our to go bag and I went up to confirm that there were indeed no tomatoes- due to an allergy- and he nodded (after having instructed the other guy to merely remove Tomatoes) that the sandwich was without tomatoes. I am now frustrated, medicated with Benadryl after having taken a bite of the sandwich and eating pieces of leftover tomato, and pretty sure we won't be back . read more

sit back, grab a snack, and listen closely. this place is absolute garbage. you might be wondering, how so? well, for starters, the owner is a creep. i came in while visiting family and from the moment i entered into the establishment i was underwhelmed. the ambiance - eh. the only reason i stayed was because most of the baristas were great. but honestly, still not worth it. i could tell we piqued the interest of the manager from the moment we walked in, and he didn't hesitate to make it known. as we waited for our drinks he very awkwardly stared at us, waiting for us to notice him... and perhaps introduce ourselves? out of discomfort, i kept my gaze away - pretending to be completely unaware. he finally waved his arms saying hello and extended his arm. my body actually froze out of fear! mind you i had never met him before. but i shook his hand, reluctantly. LISTEN CLOSELY. when i tell you i have NEVER felt so icky in my entire life. i felt like i had touched the devil himself. it was sickening. i left religion a while ago, but i have never yearned so desperately for holy water, a rosary, and a good prayer. and trust me folks that was just the beginning. he very obviously had the BIPOC employees doing the back-of-house work, while his white staff was up front. i've also heard various horror stories about how he's treated other BIPOC community members who have literally paid to be in his subpar coffee shop. truly sickening, i'm telling you. don't go to this place. you're better off stopping at the dunkin nearest you. better yet, let's support other local coffee shops, preferably ones owned by queer, trans, and/or BIPOC owners. okay, i'm done. just know, you've been warned about what to expect. good luck! xoxo read more

This was a nice coffee shop to grab a coffee and breakfast sandwich while waiting for the Farmer's Market at Rozzie Square to open. My only complaint is that the cheese on my bacon, egg, and cheese was not melted, but the rest of the sandwich was hot enough that it melted the cheese a bit, and there was a good amount of very tasty crispy bacon. read more

I legit waited over 45 minutes for a breakfast sandwich. The staff did offer a refund for the wait which was nice but i think they need more cooks and staff. That was an insanely amount of time to wait for a breakfast sandwich. read more

Their iced mocha is no joke. So rich, not sweet, and the espresso is rich. Hats off!! Keep it up! Love coming here. Also, they have some completely Gluten Free roasted garlic and truffle oil fingerling potatoes sprinkled with cheese that are quite the dish. read more

Incredible! Everything I'd ever dream to go into a neighborhood coffee shop/bar. Discovered on an Off the Beaten Path Food Tours tour of Roslindale, the Square Root is super impressive. I am in love with their coffee menu which uses local coffee roasted in Massachusetts, their delicious gelato that's homemade, and their overall vibe. The sound system they invested in is top notch. They also have a great beer selection in case you want to switch from coffee to beer. Good people and owner Anthony grew up in Roslindale. Love this place. read more

This new addition to the Roslindale scene is attempting to be both a daytime coffee shop and an evening lounge, with alcohol and live entertainment. It's an ambitious mission that remains a work in progress. Since I'm not a coffee drinker, most of my visits have been at night, to have a beer and listen to some music. While the beer and wine selection is limited, I have always found something to drink, and I have been surprised by the quality of the musicians, none of whom I knew of beforehand. It is an intimate environment, with a very good sound system for this sort of establishment. The food selections have recently expanded, so I look forward to trying some of the sandwiches and salads. The full menu does not seem to be available in the evening. It's great to have a place like this in Roslindale. I hope the owner can find a way to sustain it. read more

Okay - this is the gem that Rozzie and even JP have been waiting for! Coffee is really good; they have great beers on tap; and they're starting to get their food menu up and going. What's best though, is the atmosphere. Think: plenty of tables/chairs; large windows; fantastic playlist (So far I've heard The Cure, The Smiths, and various acoustic artists); free wifi with TONS of outlets; and a really positive vibe. They are also very child friendly. Need a place to work, grab a beer or coffee, catch up with a friend, listen to some good music, and bring your child (or not!)? This is your place. read more

My wife and a friend of hers met here for an early morning get together before heading to work. They were playing loud rock music and after 30 minutes they both admitted they couldn't even concentrate on their conversation because of the music and how loud it was. My wife's friend (a super nice individual) kindly asked the owner (or an employee, not sure) if the music could be changed. He angrily responded, "Absolutely not" and walked away. She was embarrassed and didn't know how to process such a rude response. They eventually left and went to Fornax. I was so frustrated to hear this report - why wouldn't any business, especially a new business, accommodate their customers in as simple a way as just changing the music or at least turning it down? Who wants to hear loud rock music at 7:30am? Not sure we'll be returning. The drinks aren't all that good any way. read more

I came here multiple times pre-COVID for drinks and always enjoyed it since they have a very good beer menu but I had no idea until recently that the food was great as well. Now that Squealing Pig closed they definitely have the best local takeout pizza and the nachos are ridiculously good. The outdoor seating that just opened is an added bonus, hoping that stays permanently. read more
