Recently I visited my hometown after many years of being absent to assist with a family emergency…read more One bright morning, I needed two things very badly: coffee, and a workspace. Chaffee's Brewhouse provided excellent drip coffee, espresso, and more. The service from the employees was excellent-on point, patience, informed, professional, and even better-friendly-the kind of friendly you only get from small midwestern towns. More importantly: there is food provided, and several rooms and areas to enjoy your food and drink, and Chaffees had an excellent quiet room that allowed me to setup my laptop and submit multiple million dollar proposals in while I drank my coffee. I can't wait to come back to town, if only for the coffee and the one thing I didn't get to do there: have a beer/cocktail at the end of the day. Don't pass this quiet but awesome establishment-its a great spot with great people.

Different vibe so it's not just a brew house it's coffee which is the reason we came for! :) One thing to mention it seemed the staff was new so give them grace as many were not able to answer certain answers about tea choices. However they were willing to add more milk to my drink when it seemed it did not have any, especially as an avid coffee drinker.

They stated they had air conditioning upon reserving the room, they may have one mini split hanging on the wall but it makes 0 difference in the summer. I, 7 months pregnant was beyond uncomfortable and my guests were also very uncomfortable. We had to bring our own fans to the event to get some relief. Another thing, when we were setting up we asked to fill up our water pitcher and the staff working told us no, we couldn't use their tap water.. so someone had to go panic buy jugs of water at the store right before the party started. Would NOT recommending renting this room in the summer time unless you want to have an event in a room that feels like a sauna.

Where do I begin!? Love this place! Fresh breath of air for Indian lake & total hidden gem…read more 1) it's a wine bar 2) it's a driving range What a perfect combo! Place is super cute and the wine bar is set up like most. You walk in, they have lots of seating, they have a gift shop, a bar tasting area, and an outdoor area. We tried all the available whites by the glass. The Pinot Blanc was our favorite. So much so we ordered a bottle to go. The Riesling and rose were a close second favorite. Chardonnay was good too but it's buttery so maybe better suited (for me) in the colder season. Today was a hot day out. Ohhhh and the chocolate red wine tasted like a tootsie roll pop! So here's the deal- you can order flights of wine for $12 or you can create your own 1 ounce flight tastings for $1 each pour. We did the white flight and then ordered our 1 ounce pours of the other whites. Food- we had the chocolate, the small cheese board (not small, but a good serving size), and the hummus. Manager- my only recommendations: 1) Hummus app- use real cut carrots. Not the processed baby carrots 2) Sauvignon Blanc- use the one from New Zealand for the flight tasting. You'll get more likes Love the place overall and if I lived in the area I'd be back more often!

Unfortunately, the larger dining room on the other side is the complete opposite--sterile, plain, and uninspired. It could really benefit from a decorator who could bring it in line with the vibe of the bar and outdoor areas. 17 West positions itself as the nicest (and essentially only upscale) restaurant in the New Bremen area, but it falls short of that goal. I ordered the Spicy Chicken Salad sandwich with mashed potatoes. What arrived was a croissant that looked like it came straight from the IGA bakery, topped with a single sad leaf of lettuce and a thin, pale tomato slice. The chicken salad was scooped with what appeared to be an ice cream scoop and simply plopped onto the bread. The result was a bland sandwich with almost no spice or flavor. The mashed potatoes were presented the same way--scooped and unappealing. Overall, the presentation was cafeteria-level at best, and I've had better sandwiches in hospital cafeterias. My wife ordered the Firecracker Chicken. Her side salad was tiny and unremarkable, and while the chicken leg itself tasted decent, it was still just a sauced chicken leg. At $22, it felt significantly overpriced. 17 West likely wouldn't survive in a larger city with real competition. In the New Bremen area, however, it benefits from having very little rivalry, which allows it to stay in business despite the clear mismatch between its prices and the quality and presentation of the food.

I think we spent $70 with a tip and that was for 3 people. No Alcohol. One soda and 3 entrees and an appetizer. Again, the food wasn't bad but it wasn't amazing. I posted pics of what we got. The shrimp po boy was probably the most disappointing. Don't get me wrong...loaded with shrimp but just your pre-made shrimp, fried and served. My Rasta pasta was really good. Plentiful and heat was just right. The little piece of bread tasted like it may have been a bit out of date. The jerk cheesesteak was good and good flavor. Fries were my favorite. Had a bit of the coating on them and crunchy and just really tasty. Appetizer of fried ochre was 10 out of 10. Portion size was generous and they came out smoking hot and tasted great. Dining room was a bit odd...like a 60's jazz bar. Music was loud for the amount of people there. We were seated by one person who told us they would be serving us and then another guy came and told us he would be taking care of us. Seems like it may be a "whoever gets to the table first and takes an order gets the table". It was an odd exchange when the girl who seated us came back only for us to say some guy already took our drink order. Unclear as to who was supposed to do what but that made things a little weird. I would be willing to go back but my wife wasn't impressed so I don't know as we will return. We wanted to try it as we had heard great things but now that we have, not sure we need to go back. Food wasn't awful, something just left an odd taste with us and our experience.

But don't hesitate to get in here, just watch your step a bit. It's dim and romantic with a retro vibe. We ate at the bar which always tends to give a good feel for a new place. There were two barmaids who came and went as they had to serve tables too, but service was quite attentive. We were primarily served by Melissa (I hope I remembered her name right!) and she was so helpful with answering questions. We happened to come on the half price app day** so naturally we tried the Breaking Bread... incredible, easily sufficient for four people to share. It was warm, soft, cheesy and full of flavor. The marinara was delicious as was the blended cheese dip. We took half home and enjoyed it the next day. My husband had the smoked salmon sandwich. It was beautiful to behold, smelled so delectable, and off the charts delicious. After I took a bite I was jealous. I did thoroughly enjoy my BLT+E with a wonderful runny egg and thick fresh tomato. I think I would have liked it better on toasted bread vs. the bun. Everything on the menu sounded good. I had a peek at the brunch menu too. I had a cocktail called the Farm Market which was so refreshing and like a taste of summer which I needed badly on this bitter cold evening. They have a great cocktail list and of course an extensive wine list which is set up in unique categories and fun to read. My husband was happy with his wine. They also have port! Four kinds! Melissa kindly gave me a taste of one and I am SO coming back for a port flight. A word on accessibility- the main entrance has two steps up and there are sturdy grab bars on both sides but you do need to be a bit cautious at the bottom. I was told there is a rear or side entry that is wheelchair accessible. It was way too cold to explore but I'll check it out on our next visit in the very near future. If you're thinking of giving the Cork a try, don't hesitate. It's fabulous. **Yelp advises they are removing Tips (boo) so I'll note again here that apps are half price all night on Thursdays.

Not that there is any real competition. Best wine in town, also, no competition. The menu is enticing, offering real New American recipes. The execution and ingredients aren't all super fresh or fancy, but the fundamentals are there. I'm not a fan of their taco tuesday... just not great tacos. Almost all the apps are great though. The Burgers are fairly good. If i was judging the food quality alone, it'd be like 3 stars. But the menu offerings, the drinks, the atmosphere, and the service are all boosting the overall experience. The atmosphere is lovely in a historic general store with antique shelves and woodwork. Often live piano music on the weekends.
