The restaurant has an interesting split personality. The bar area is warm and inviting, with comfortable seating at the bar, tables, and booths that feel well-designed and cohesive. Unfortunately, the larger dining room on the other side is the complete opposite--sterile, plain, and uninspired. It could really benefit from a decorator who could bring it in line with the vibe of the bar and outdoor areas. 17 West positions itself as the nicest (and essentially only upscale) restaurant in the New Bremen area, but it falls short of that goal. I ordered the Spicy Chicken Salad sandwich with mashed potatoes. What arrived was a croissant that looked like it came straight from the IGA bakery, topped with a single sad leaf of lettuce and a thin, pale tomato slice. The chicken salad was scooped with what appeared to be an ice cream scoop and simply plopped onto the bread. The result was a bland sandwich with almost no spice or flavor. The mashed potatoes were presented the same way--scooped and unappealing. Overall, the presentation was cafeteria-level at best, and I've had better sandwiches in hospital cafeterias. My wife ordered the Firecracker Chicken. Her side salad was tiny and unremarkable, and while the chicken leg itself tasted decent, it was still just a sauced chicken leg. At $22, it felt significantly overpriced. 17 West likely wouldn't survive in a larger city with real competition. In the New Bremen area, however, it benefits from having very little rivalry, which allows it to stay in business despite the clear mismatch between its prices and the quality and presentation of the food. read more

The environment is elegant and relaxing. Beautiful art decorates the walls. I ordered chop sirloin with sautéed mushrooms. My food was plated as if it too were art. Kimbi, my server, was professional, charming, and delightful. After my delicious entrée, I ordered peach cheesecake. It too, was plated like art. Owned by Crown, this is one wonderful place to dine! It's on the order of Silas, Coldwater Cafe and Salar. Exceptionally good! We had: Pork wontons with an Asian dipping sauce. Very different, very good! Yellowfin tuna sandwich. Thick slice of tuna, Broccoli slaw, tropical rum sauce. Off-the-charts! Langostino, pea risotto. An excellent perfectly prepared risotto, langistino, peas and Parmesan cheese. Just delicious! Lemon blueberry tart. What a way to finish the meal! This spot can't be beat. Really, it's first class all around, from the service to the ambiance and the food. This is a great great find. It's in an old hotel and has been restored and is perfect. Great for a date lunch or night, a special event or bringing visitors from out of town. It's even worth the hour drive from Dayton for a visit. Actually can you come open a 17 West in Dayton please? I recently had the good fortune to visit 17 West in the downtown area of New Bremen. Though my companion and I weren't very hungry, we opted to have a black bramble London mule and a raspberry lemon drop to start. These cocktails were fantastic. In fact, despite loving the raspberry lemon drop, both my partner and I really loved the black bramble mule! We decided to order the spinach artichoke dip appetizer to split since we weren't very hungry. Though it's generally difficult to make a bad spinach artichoke dip, this one was a step above most! It was flavorful and had a nice garlic aftertaste. The crusty bread provided with it was the perfect vehicle to get the dip into our mouths. Though we weren't interested in an entree, we did choose to share the chocolate cobbler with black raspberry ice cream and, let me tell you, it was phenomenal. In fact, it made me sad that we don't live in New Bremen because, if we did, we would be stopping by for this dessert regularly! The "cobbler" was more of a moist chocolate cake and it was perfectly complimented by the raspberry ice cream. In fact, unless you really don't like raspberries, this is the ice cream to choose (you can choose chocolate or vanilla, too)! Service was excellent. We didn't have to wonder when our drinks would be filled because our server, Darion, was very attentive. The atmosphere of the restaurant was high-end but accessible to most clientele. We are very happy that we had the chance to experience some of what 17 West has to offer to locals and visitors alike! read more

We hit the happy hour on Friday night on some great draft beers. The entrees were superb and the service was 5stars as well. Loved the location in beautiful New Bremen, Ohio along the lake-to-river canal. Lock One Theatre was across the street and very accessible for us. read more

This place is perfect for a nice dinner. The bread starter with whipped butter was amazing. I could have filled up on all the bread and butter. I did a cup of roasted red pepper and smoked Gouda soup, the lump crab meat was a delicious addition. I order a half size of the 17 West signature salad, the size was perfect, but the flavor was amazing and I wish I order a full serving. I have to admit-- I had kinda stuck my nose up at this place prior to us going (which never ends up working out well for me). I am from Cleveland and have lived in Columbus for 13 years. I live right on off of High St in downtown by all of the Cameron Mitchell restaurants. So when my boyfriend (who is originally from New Bremen) told me about going to dinner with his family at 17 West, I didn't think the restaurants in such a small town would be nearly as good as what I'm used to. Boy was I wrong! For starters, I could tell I'd like this place when I reviewed the wine list. Mondavi, Hall, Stag's Leap, Silver Oak. Those are some winners right there. I knew this place had it goin' on! I also noticed that there were so many options on the dinner menu that I'd be interested in. We decided to get a few bottles of wine (I only drank the Mondavi Woodbridge Cab) and order the spinach & artichoke and strawberry bruschetta appetizers. I really enjoyed the wine, which I knew I would. But I was blown away by these appetizers. They were SO good, especially the strawberry bruschetta. I didn't think fruit and bruschetta would even go together, but the taste was delicious! I loved the hearty portion of goat cheese on top, the freshly sliced strawberries, balsamic glaze and the finely chopped mint leaves. It was the perfect combination with excellent flavor. I also loved that this wasn't the type of bruschetta bread that was super hard. It had a little bit of "doughiness" still left to it. I highly recommend this appetizer! I eventually decided on the salmon meal. All entrees come with a side salad and rolls. I appreciated that their roll baskets include many different types of bread. And by the time our salads came out, almost everyone at the table was already full! I did end up eating my entire salmon though and I definitely enjoyed the fish. However, the rice it comes with is kind of a spicy rice. I would have preferred just regular white or brown rice. The caullilini was just ok. I was so full I really only ate the fish! My boyfriend had gotten the sirloin and he asked for it to be cooked medium, but it came out almost burnt with no pink whatsoever. So that made them lose a star (however, I wish I could only dock a half star because overall, this place is 4.5 in my book). All in all, I was very impressed with 17 West. I think they definitely have it going on and if it were located in Columbus, it might be somewhere I'd go more regularly. I will no longer stick up my nose at a restaurant regardless of where it is located! Would love to come back sometime.... read more

My meal here was totally solid. Simple, straightforward and not to fussy. I had a grilled chicken with a lime flavoring, mashed potatoes and I subbed out Brussels sprouts for asparagus. Went with the starter salad as well--again, basic and good. The one down side was the water, even with 3 lemons juiced into it, it was not good. Not their fault though. Also, since I was alone, I got seated at this sorta sad 2 top tucked away at the back of the restaurant which didn't feel great, with people in a booth right behind me. And the place was empty when I got there. I suppose if I'd been more with it, I would have figured out that I could have sat at the bar. Oh well. Nice staff. read more

My husband and I frequent this restaurant. We love the ambiance, the bartenders and staff. The cocktails are expertly crafted. The food is generally very good, although can be a somewhat inconsistent at times. You cannot go wrong with the salmon, scallops (the size of vanilla wafers) and steaks. The Roasted Red Pepper Gouda Soup is a must try. We tried the Burger ONCE and would have traded it for a McD's quarter pounder in a NY second. It was absolutely bland, no flavor...even a bunch of condiments couldn't save it. (hope they are working on that). read more

My wife and I stopped here on our way from San Diego to St. Henry. We were both immediately impressed with the menu and ambiance of the restaurant. For drinks we ordered an electric lemonade cocktail and a local craft bock beer from Moeller Beer Barn. For appetizer we had the goat cheese, strawberry, mint bruschetta with balsamic reduction on gluten-free french bread, which was amazing. The acidity of the balsamic paired well with the sweetness of the strawberry and creaminess of the goat cheese. For lunch we had the grilled chicken with cilantro lime sauce, roasted carrots, and jasmine rice. The second lunch was the grilled salmon in a sweet chili glaze, also with the same sides. Both the chicken and salmon were cooked to perfection. They were tender, juicy, and delicious. The head chef was extremely professional and courteous. He informed us that they change up the menu every three months based upon the season. They utilize local produce and fly in fresh seafood daily. This is a little gem in the middle of midwest Ohio. This is the second time that we've been to 17 W. for dinner. Although it is kind of a pricey restaurant, the food is absolutely excellent and they give you plenty of it! It has a good atmosphere to the restaurant, and the staff are all friendly. The barmaids seemed to know everybody by first name so I assume they have a lot of regulars in the bar area. My husband ordered the lamb chops this time which he really enjoyed. I ordered the bone-in ribeye, which was excellent. We will definitely go back again when we are in that area. read more

So this has been our 4th visit since September, 17 West continues to raise the bar each time. A colleague from India is visiting so we had to let her taste the best of what the area offers. Her lamb chop meal was a hit, a hearty potion that was visually appealing and as tasty as can be. Others enjoyed a great Hamburg meal and splendid.seasonal salad topped with chicken. The ambiance of 17 West never fails to impress, the artwork captivates your attention, seeing something new each time. Would have like to enjoy the music playing, but we had time constraints. The service is always friendly, gracious and professional. Great experiences here in the past. However, our most recent visit here will be our last, even though the food is decent. We checked in for our dinner reservation a few minutes early, and the woman running the desk was unfriendly, appeared irritated, didn't really acknowledge us except to ask our name, and then only said "yep" when she verified our spot. It was quite uncomfortable. She directed a young lady where to seat us, which we found is arguably the least desirable table in the establishment: a high-top for two, at the top of the steps bar-side, pushed up against a massive cold window (15 degrees outside), a few feet from the bar itself in a high traffic area, and where cold air would rush in and hit us every time the entrance/exit door opened. (More suitable for a quick lunch, or even overflow for someone without reservations if all other tables are full.) The hostess put menus down and quickly walked away before we could inquire about a different table, so we decided to deal with it and order. That was our mistake, as we noticed several tables remained empty throughout our dinner. 5 minutes later, our waitress finally came to get our drink order, quickly brought our waters and tea and took our food orders. Several minutes after, she brought our salads, then asked as an afterthought if we wanted bread brought out. We told her yes we did, and she said she'd bring it right out. Within minutes into eating our salads, our hot entrees were brought to the table by a kitchen runner. Waitress came by shortly after (without bread, she never brought it) and commented with surprise at how fast our food came out, to which we agreed it was too fast. Husband then had to ask for more water at that point, since none was offered, and she brought a carafe, overfilled his glass spilling ice on the table, said "oops, sorry" and walked away. Came back again to take salad plates. About ten minutes later, asked if we were finished with our empty dinner plates, put our check on the table without even telling us it was there and cleared plates. Didn't ask if we wanted dessert (we did!) or if we needed anything else. At that point, the evening was pretty much ruined. The same woman who checked us in, walked by, noticed our bill with a credit card sticking out, and took it off the table saying she'd give it to our server. Server came back a few minutes later, dropped it back on the table with a curt "have a good night" as she was turning and walking away. Our entire dinner service was so rushed, we were finished eating within 30-35 minutes of being seated. And our bill (and tip) was less than half of what we'd normally order and spend, since we didn't order appetizers due to poor seating and weren't even given the opportunity for dessert before our bill was plopped on the table. read more

Our waitress, Bobby Jo, was a stitch, and kept us laughing. I had the roasted red pepper and gouda soup with crab, and it was outstanding! My buffalo chicken salad was very good, too, chicken was tender and nicely seasoned. My husband loved his crab cake BLT, crab cake had very little filler. for an upscale restaurant charging this much, the food and service has just got to be better. if your charging $54 dollars for a filet it needs to be prepared right, lacked taste and wasn't prepared to order, you don't wanna send it back when it took a hour after appetizers to get to you. also many items forgotten. my wife's salad never came with the others and we had to ask about it after 30 minute from when we received ours, they forgot sides and also drinks..... if you want to be and upscale restaurant this must get better, I can get better service a at the local diner read more
