There is one sandwich place which is the real sandwich place for decades in the San Francisco and is still open M-F ( Monday- Friday). The Sandwich Place on 16th street and Mission street has been a neighborhood favorite for decades from elementary to adulthood. The Sandwich Place ( not to be confused with the Sandwich Store) has been serving some good sandwiches from breakfast to lunch and has vegetarian options . I like going here for the lunch menu which is usually a hot pastrami sandwich and a delicious cold tuna sandwich. I got the savory Pastrami sandwich and it is still consistent to what I had over the years. The bread is soft and the warm pastrami is tender and tasty with melted provolone cheese and veggies for the crunch. Now THAT, folks, is a good sammich. I went today following the Yelp reviews. I stood in a small line and instantly became amused at the guy behind the counter's bantering with customers (must be Juan?). When it was my turn I ordered a turkey and roast beef with everything. Glad he reminded me about jalapenos, which are mandatory in a good sammy. I went outside to the very limited seating on a warm December day and engulfed one of the better sandwiches I have ever had. Not sure why as I have had more than a few, but it is toasted perfectly, oozing with just the right amount of sauces and cheese and was just perfection. The first 2 times I came in alone, the owner was nice, a pretty loud person for it being like 8am but not that big of a deal. The last time, which was months ago but I vividly remember, I went in with my partner and we got different treatment. The owner was rude and condescending, especially to my partner who's a male. My partner tried to order a coffee and asked if they had some oatmilk cuz he doesn't drink dairy and he responded with "oatmilk? this isn't Starbucks. You can go to Starbucks for that". It was so rude and uncalled for. It's 2024, many people don't drink dairy, I don't either. All he could've said was "sorry no" but instead he chose to behave immaturely and treat us like we were stupid. Very poor customer service and rude business. Hidden gem on 16th n Mission. This man really puts all of his love and effort into his craft. I came here on the way to Dolores Park. It's right next to the 16th Street BART Station! I didn't look at the menu beforehand, but I ordered the regular avocado and bacon sandwich. The man making my sandwich was very friendly, and he packed the sandwich with veggies, sauce and bacon. The bacon is thick and crispy at the same time and provided so much flavor. I ordered pastrami; they gave me hot pastrami, and the sauce inside the sandwich was oversoaking the bread until every bite started to taste like hot mayo. Yuck, I may be traumatized after eating here or any pastrami sandwich in general since it is not one of my favorite sandwiches to begin with; in all fairness, they probably do make good sandwiches, just not this one, not for me anyway. Salsa music blasting from a boombox or bluetooth speaker, somewhere, can be heard as one can look around and tell that the place has some history and with that, the changes to reflect the times. "That's great but what about the food?!" Alright: so the sandwiches that are made are the stuff that used to be commonly made throughout the sandwich eateries in San Francisco county but the thing is that those places are dwindling to nothing. No one makes the kind of sandwiches that I dub as "1980s style." What's a "1980's style" deli sandwich? Easy: it's a sandwich that has this right blend of cold cuts, mayonaise, lettuce, tomatoes, peppers, and, wait for it, black pepper - the signature condiment of the times. Oh sure you can go anywhere else that touts things like "zesty herb Italina garlic aioli" or whatever - the kind of stuff that Whole Foods capitalized on during the 2010s when creeping around opening up places throughout San Francisco.
