I remember when this bar first opened . A lot of excitement for a rum bar ! The inside was casual and I liked the lighting. Unfortunately the service was not great and as time went on and it became more crowded I avoided it . A altercation broke out in front of this bar and that's rare as far as bars go in this neighborhood. Still rooting for this business the drinks were well made.

The Rum Bar BK is a Black Woman-Owned Business on Franklin Ave in Brooklyn. Rum Bar is near a host of eateries including Dutch Boy Burger/ Franklin Park, Chavela's, Ras Plant Based, MISC, etc. & some hang-out spots. We attended the "Rum Rediscovered" Event at Rum Bar on 3/13/25. Hosted by Privateer Rum's VP of Brand & Trade Development Shannon Mustipher, she provided educational information around Rum. We tried several dark rum options & light rum while learning about its history. The role that Rum has had in cocktail creation as well as rum development & production were discussed. Shannon talked about various countries that create rum. I had no idea that rum has such a deep / rich history. We learned so much while consuming it during this Rum Tasting experience. There were some good books recommended & Individuals had interesting questions & comments, which was appreciated. Once the event ended, Owner Garnett declared The Rum Bar BK open for people to purchase cocktails. The DJ played a medley of Socca & Reggae Music as people were socializing & dancing. Rum Bar BK has a quaint indoor seating are as well as a cozy outdoor backyard / patio area. There is gorgeous artwork & Garnett told me that she got it all from Cuba. The Bartender made good cocktails & Rum Bar has overall good vibes. Rum Bar has DJ's play music during TGIF - every Friday 7pm - Late, & during Vinyl Mondays @7pm. Mon. - Thurs. - 4pm - 2am Fri. Sat. & Sun. - 2pm - 2am @therumbarbk

This rum bar is always a great time! The vibes are fantastic, with great music that sets the perfect mood. The drinks are top-notch, and the bites are equally delicious. Whether you're there for a casual hangout or a night out, it's consistently a fun experience. Highly recommend it for anyone looking to enjoy good drinks, food, and an amazing atmosphere!

This is the perfect spot to go late at night when you dont feel like going home. Drinks 4/5: Ive had many drinks from this place and while some bartenders are better than others, the drinks remain pretty solid and most importantly strong Food: 4/5 I had the chicken Tacos and maybe it was just the drinks, but they were pretty tasty and flavorful, the fries were just ok but it def got the job done. Service: 3/5 but honestly depends what night you go, most of the bartenders are nice and will Experiment with drinks for you but most recently when I went it took a long time to get service even thought it wasnt very crowded at that point. Ambiance :3/5 in winter 5/5 in summer. The inside area is very tight and narrow so it makes ordering hard but during the summer when the backyard area is open this place can be super cute and such a vibe. Either way the music is always on point and def more for my afro beats, reggae and soca lovers. Overall a great place to catch a drink and vibe out especially for happy hour

First two experiences were 5 stars by far. I cannot stress how fun and inviting my bartender was on both occasions. She's the best. Last visit, which was last night, was terrible. The bartender conned me on my happy hour drinks. 2 rum shots and a beer should have come to $11 before tax. He charged me $27. I planned to stay for a few rounds and unwind, but it rubbed me the wrong way. I brought it to his attention and he gave a lame excuse that made no sense. Instead of arguing, I paid and left. The place is an absolute vibe, and I'll return, but I'm not a fan of trickery or not honoring the prices presented on the menu. If this happens again, they've lost a customer.

Fun and friendly bartenders. The drinks were somewhat pricey but packed with flavor. Presentation was A1 as well. I only knocked off one star because the kitchen wasn't open still at 6pm.

Having opened just a couple of weeks ago, Rum Bar is the latest addition to the bar/dine scene on Franklin Avenue. We stopped by for a quick cocktail a recent sunny afternoon, and the first impression was: WOW!!! This place is awesome! Really cool, laidback vibe that exudes effortless sophistication. I also liked the vibrant colors of the bar, definitely different and unique, and the beautiful backyard. What differentiates Rum Bar from other great bars in Crown Heights is its rum-centered cocktail menu. The cocktails, priced at ~$15-18, are as tasty as they look fantastic. Both the El Diablo and the Piton Punch were excellent cocktails, and we would happily tried a couple more cocktails if we weren't in a bit of a rush. I definitely look forward to coming back soon for more cocktails and also to try a few of their dishes, which look really tasty[1]. This place is sexy. ------------------------ [1] The oxtail has my name on it!

I'm a fan of fruity drinks and The Rum Bar delivered! Great service and the drinks were not only tasty, but also they were beautiful. I ordered the Piton Punch and the El Diablo. Next time, I'm gonna try the food. Since I visited on a Monday around 3pm, there were tons of empty seats and open space. Everyone from the staff to other people were relaxed so overall there was good energy. It was also happy hour during that time so I got some $$ of the drinks. Definitely check it out if you're in the area.

The Rum Bar is a cool vibe with indoor bar seating and outdoor table seating. It gets crowded at the bar, but the bartender does his best. My friend and I ate at the bar, and the food was juicy and fresh (jerk chicken meal plus chicken fingers). Cool spot to hang out and listen to music while enjoying a limited food menu.

very good drinks and great music. service was quick! We just happened to stop and try their drinks and i must it was the vibe and the music that prompt us to go in. They also have a cool backyard too highly! highly recommend for my fellow soul sisters!

We were honestly super excited to try rum bar just finding out that Chef Paul had partnered with them. We went on a Friday night and it wasn't too busy. I must say the decor is top tier and you feel like you're in a Caribbean island with elevated vibes. The issue we had was with the service. Firstly at the bar . The bartender was for lack of a better word .... Rude .... She appeared to not want to be there...annoyed that you were placing an order but for someone who works in the service industry her facial expressions and attitude were not it. It took us 35 mins to get drinks. They were delicious but her attitude alone turned us off. To order food we had to bend down into a tiny window - yes very nostalgic of being the Caribbean but can we move the window to face height so we're all not bending in our 30s . We ordered and were told 15-20 mins for our dishes of which we ordered the codfish fritters, coconut shrimp , spicy shrimp and the jerk chicken wontons. The food took 60 mins - when we checked what was going on they told they had run out of plates and they were washing them downstairs. In terms of the food the codfish fritters and coconut shrimp were amazing . The spicy shrimp was so spicy my friends eyes were watering and he started sneezing. The jerk chicken wontons are nothing to sing home about and quite frankly lack flavor. The overall vibe seemed like there is a lack of management at the business so the employees do as they please - also it seemed like some friends of theirs had come by to the point where they were taking orders from customers and mid way walking away to hail up a friend. At one point I asked my friend if they were all high - such slow service and the rude/ nonchalant bartender is why they're getting 3 stars today .

It was sort of an odd time so the spacious restaurant wasn't very busy. We studied the menu for too long and after much deliberation, here's what we ordered, in order of spice level: - Oxtail ($35): Not spicy, super flavorful, "Trimmed and sliced chunks of oxtail seasoned freely with fresh spices and simmered to tender perfection." - Curry goat ($29): Mildly spicy, "Goat meat marinated and cooked in curry spices and herbs makes this an exotic dish." - Jerk chicken ($20): Apparently incredibly spicy so I steered clear of it, "A Jamaican delight. Spicy, delicious chicken baked with this unique combination of spices from the island." The dishes I could handle were excellent, with no drop of sauce left unmopped. On the sides front, the rice and beans, roti, steamed vegetables, and plantains were all tasty. The entree sizes were hearty. Our server seemed like a cool dude: easygoing with a sense of humor. It was kind of chilly in the restaurant, not sure if we were in a warmth dead zone or what. The bathroom was frog-themed which was a cute touch!

Very island spiced and cooked well - Goat was also really strong - Reasonable prices - service with personality What's to jeer - they were out of the jerk chicken unfortunately which I really wanted to try - place is pretty low key and not swimming with ambience

Food took entirely too long to come out. 40 minutes for an appetizer is crazy... Once they arrived, they were all tasty. I wish I took photos of the food. Biang biang Rasta noodles is served with oyster mushrooms (so good) and peppers. I added shrimp to mine. Very tasty and filling. But keep in mind that the noodles are not penne and they are I think fettuccine They must do better on their serving time. The restaurant was crowded. We were in a sunlit room and it really set the mood. Our server was great, and we ordered family-style. Just a heads up, they have a separate "Sunday drunch" menu so options are a bit limited. For apps, we got the curry crab gyoza which was a very small portion (6/10) and the roasted mushroom truffle flatbread which was the highlight of the meal (8.5/10). For mains, we tried the biang biang Rasta noodles with salmon (6/10) and the sofrino roasted chicken (5/10). Both were a bit underwhelming. I've heard their drinks are great but we didn't try any. Food-wise, I was a little disappointed, but still had a great time catching up with friends.

I had their passion fruit lemonade which was refreshing and not overly sweet. For my entree I ordered their oxtails and rice and peas on the side. When I asked for some spice the server brought us some pepper sauce which was exactly what I needed! My sister tried their jerk wings and mac and cheese. Their Mac and cheese is WOW. Definitely recommend! I didn't try their wings but I tried the sauce that comes with the wings and it had a lovely kick to it. For dessert we shared the Plantain Paradise and the ice cream paired so great with the plantains. It was vanilla ice cream but didn't taste like regular vanilla ice cream.. it had a nice rich texture . Service was great, the music was nice and although it was a bit cold in there they had a blanket per table which I thought was a cool concept.

For my hubby, Brooklyn is home - and we always love exploring the new places the city has to offer when we visit. We had reservations, and were seated within 10 minutes, which was reasonable. The place was packed - everyone was in high spirits, and I was ready to taste some of the best Caribbean cuisine in the region. My hubby's best friend - a Brooklyn resident, joined us. He had been to the restaurant a few times - and had good things to say. We were not disappointed. I had the Brown Stew Red Snapper - *chef's kiss*. Hubby had the iconic Jerk Oxtail over Macaroni & Cheese Pie! The English language cannot convey the beauty of that combination! Tender, tender oxtail, falling off the bone with the creamy, cheesy mac & cheese! He wanted to savor that dish another day, so he got a to-go bag and took it back to the hotel! (I couldn't help but clean my plate - I was obsessed with the fish!) Our friend enjoyed the Hennessy Fried Shrimp (not pictured) - one of his favorite dishes at the restaurant. It looked delicious as well. For drinks, I had the Bob Marley cocktail. A colorful drink - flavorful - and effective! There were people celebrating their birthdays throughout the night - and the wait staff goes IN! I was enjoying watching at least 10 people receive the Stevie Wonder "Happy Birthday" song while we were there. Imagine my surprise when it was my turn! My birthday was the day before, and we had already celebrated in Manhattan. Having two special recognition events made the evening that much more special! Shout out to the Simpson crew who came with the song, the rhythm, the sparkling cake, and the good vibes! My 70th birthday was exceptional - without a doubt. The Simpson added the touch I needed. I asked for bottled still water, but the staff member didn't know what they offered, so I decided to wait. Our server came over for drink orders and she was very warm and kind. She took our full order at once. I asked again about bottled water and she confirmed they had Voss, which was perfect. I requested ice on the side. When the water still did not come, I asked a third time. At that point, she told me they only had sparkling water. Ma'am... were you ever going to tell me? Or was I supposed to just sit there guessing and waiting? I was two seconds from going to grab a bottle out of my car. Food: * Cod fish fritters (appetizer): very good, and the aioli really elevated the flavor * Brown stew snapper with veggies, rice and beans, and mac and cheese: the snapper itself was flavorful but not hot, which was disappointing. The veggies lacked seasoning, and the mac and cheese tasted like plain noodles with cheese * Oxtails (my mom): she loved them, but they were just okay to me * Chicken and waffles (my husband): he enjoyed it * Fresh fruit punch: absolutely delicious Service: This is where things went downhill. After the initial interaction, I had to constantly look for our server or any staff member whenever I needed something. Not once did anyone check in to ask if we needed anything or how everything was. That level of inattentiveness is unacceptable. I was extremely annoyed. This is not the experience I expected based on reviews, but then I realized something important. Google and Yelp reviews are very different. Yelp reviewers tend to be more honest and consistent, and I should have listened. Final Thoughts: Traveling all the way from Boston for this experience was a letdown. Between having to chase service and inconsistent food quality, it simply was not worth it. If it were not for how I was raised, the tip would have been 10 percent, and even that would have been forced. Simpson's needs to either hire more staff or seriously retrain their team on customer service. Bostonians: it is not worth the trip.
