To start, we ordered food for delivery and it got delivered in about 20 minutes after we placed the order on a Friday around 5. This is much faster than the website estimate of 45-55 minutes and a lovely surprise. I tried the yelp system for delivery and worked out seamlessly. Now, let's talk about the main event. We ordered the Pad See Ew with pork and extra vegetables, Drunken Noodle with seafood, extra vegetables, extra egg, and the Sea War Salad. All three dishes were exquisite - the favors were like a little trip to Thailand for our tastebuds. The seafood was tender, tasty, and seemed very fresh. The noodles were cooked to perfection and had just the right amount of heat and flavor. It is a solid restaurant but nothing to write home about. The portions were pretty large and it took us two meals to finish everything. What I like about the food was that it felt light and you could tell the ingredients were good quality. I typically don't eat shrimp and even I liked the shrimp and pineapple fried rice. The Pad Thai was good, as were the starter shrimp rolls but the flavors are pretty subtle. I'd recommend it if you're looking for a healthier Thai option, but not if you're trying to satisfy a craving for feel-good (slightly self loathing?) comfort food. We stopped in here for dinner last Saturday and had a really solid Thai dinner. The Curry Puffs were the stars of the apps (also got the Satay and Spring roll which were fine) and then I had the Drunken Noodle Jae while my wife had the Pad Thai Jae. Both were a good size, filling but not too much. The Drunken Noodle definitely has some spice in it, but again, just the right amount for me to enjoy without needing a sip between every bite. After looking for Thai places this seemed the most promising. The Regent is definitely trying to upscale the ambiance, dark, lots of wooden Buddha and a nice bar area. We got a chicken dumpling appetizer, it was a lot like a dull shumai, it was nothing special, like it came out of a bag. The masaman curry I got as an entree though, was a lot better. A little heat, the right amount of coconut milk and a lot of chicken. They served it in an oddly angled bowl but there was a good amount of curry to rice. Service was great, the staff here were really attentive and friendly. Delicious Thai food. Tried both vegetarian and chicken dishes and they were addictive--couldn't stop eating. I ordered food from this place last night. I used to go there, years ago and I really liked their food, the setting of the place and all. Let me tell you that last night's meal was the most bland Thai food I have ever had! How can you make Thai food tasteless!? We ordered tofu pad Thai and it was a bunch of very greasy noodle with no flavor and no color. It looked like they were just sautéed in oil. Yum (not)! There was no vegetables in there either. I mean, if you call green onions vegetables, then there were a little of that. We also ordered some spring rolls. 3 little tiny things stuffed with very little cabbage and carrots came. They seemed breaded inside or something of maybe it was how thick the wrapping was, I don't know, but it tastes like cardboard. Frankly, this place just became off the record for me and my husband. Green curry with shrimp - 4 stars. Pad See Ew - 2 stars. Best first, the green curry with shrimp was pretty tasty. If it had been this dish alone, I would have been solidly satisfied. The flavor was great and the curry was well balanced. The shrimps were large, there was a decent amount and they were all perfectly cooked to the optimal level of succulent tenderness without being overdone. The eggplant was perfectly cooked and succulent. The bamboo shots added a great crunch. The only tiny little weird thing, was the oddly small amount of rice they sent, it was like 1/4 of a cup of rice? But the curry was soo good that I didn't need filler rice anyway. Now to the Pad See Ew, first let me saw say that Pad See Ew is one of my favorite dishes, period. To say something nice, the sauce flavors were good and there was an ample amount of pork (they don't skimp on the meats here). The biggest issue was that everything was really over cooked. The pork was past dry and unpleasant, the noodles were too gummy, and the vegetables were limp, almost mushy and flavorless. Great location, nice outdoor seating, but very, VERY disappointing food. Would not recommend if you are looking for good Thai food. The restaurant is situated in a very accessible location (15 mins from Dupont Circle and about 10 mins from Adams Morgan), and they have a patio area that lets you enjoy the nice weather. The ambiance of the restaurant is very friendly for a small gathering of friends and a one-on-one date, but just remember, your date WILL be disappointed by the food if you go here. I ordered the Penang Chicken and the Tom Yum soup. The Tom Yum soup wasn't outstanding, but it wasn't horrible either. It is a good dish to order during the summer heat because it is very sour and it opens up your taste buds. While I personally enjoyed that aspect, my girlfriend thought that the soup was much more sour than the average Tom Yum soup. The Penang Chicken was a complete disappointment. Authentic Thai food is known to have a very strong smell that would make your mouth water and heavy flavors that make your taste buds do somersaults. The Regent's Penang Chicken fell far short of that standard. The sauce was very diluted and tasted like a typical paste that you buy from Harris Teeter. The chicken itself tasted dry and rubbery, similar to leftovers that have been microwaved from the night before. Essentially, the chicken is way too over cooked. Additionally, the rice was very dry and hard. I had to soak the rice in the sauce from the chicken in order to soften it. At the end of the day, the Thai food falls short of being authentic and the taste is subpar. In the general spectrum of food, it is also a disappointment since the flavors were very diluted, the dishes dry, and the taste itself was boring. Again, I would not recommend. read more

After leaving Lauriol Plaza because of an out of control wait on Friday night, we went across the street and were surprised it was so empty here. I don't know why the people weren't flocking here, though, because this place has it going on. The ambiance is perfect: a little dark, great for a date, and all kinds of great Thai artwork around the space. More importantly, the food is really good. It might be the most flavorful Thai you're going to find in DC, period. We started with the pla muek tod, fried squid with sweet and sour. It got things started on the right note, but it was the pad gra prao that was truly phenomenal. We got it with chicken, and it has great strong basil flavor and chili garlic sauce. I could eat this everyday it's so good. Can't go wrong with see-ew or panang, either. We pigged out and didn't regret it. Bonus points because the Thai coffee was great, as well. I wasn't the biggest fan of Regent Thai. DC is full of great Thai places and unfortunately Regent just doesn't measure up. The pad thai beef dish I ordered was tasteless - there was barely any sauce on it and the noodles felt dry and empty and way too sweet. They also gave me barely any meat. It was mostly tofu... if I had wanted tofu pad thai, I would have ordered that instead. Getting 3 pieces of beef was disappointing. I ordered an additional order of pad thai to go as well and it wasn't much better. The noodles were still too dry and way too sweet. My friend seemed to enjoy her dish, so others may very well have different experiences than I did. I just wasn't a huge fan. Disappointing because this place had been on my bookmarks list of places to try for a while. And also because I paid $13 per pad thai dish... However, I have to say the service and ambiance were great. I visited for dinner on a weekday evening and we were seated right away. It wasn't crowded at all and I loved the decorations. I walked past Regent twice before I actually found it! Hidden off of 18th street is this cute and dimly lit Thai restaurant. Despite its location, Regent offers decent Thai food at very reasonable prices. For lunch, you can get an egg roll, sour soup, and entree for only $10. My friends and I ordered the Beef Drunken Noodles and Chicken Pad Thai. Both weren't bad, but the beef was a bit chewy and both dishes needed some more sauce. My favorite dish was the Gang Ped Yang (red duck curry) which was not considered a lunch special. For $14, you get plenty of tender duck in a spicy red curry. I loved that the dish also had lychee, which I thought was unusual yet very tasty because it added a sweetness to the curry! The Thai Iced Tea was delicious- not watered down or too sweet. The sticky rice with mango dessert was great too. Our favorite dessert had to be the Thai Tea Ice cream- many restaurants don't offer this, but I really enjoyed Regent's! Service was friendly as well. At times, our server disappeared, but his smile made up for it. The Regent has an elegant dining room decorated with Thai wood wall carvings and sculptures of Buddhas. The setting is calm, soothing and dark wood, like the interior of historic Thai architecture dwellings. Unfortunately, the kitchen didn't convey the same thoughtful arrangement in their plate preparation. My drunken noodles, ordered as a result of scanning numerous Yelp reviews, was a sloppy affair with fairly decent wide noodles, yet insufficiently doctored up with flourishes--- scallions, peppercorns, red bell pepper, crunchy greens. The slapdash offering was carelessly topped with about five average shrimp. The flavor and spice hit their mark, but the preparation lacked. My dining companion had a more happy reaction to his choice, a ginger curry with tofu and veggies. He has eaten here numerous times and likes his food each time to the extent that he recommended we meet here. Since we have vastly different culinary backgrounds (he's from Philadelphia, I'm from India), you might conjecture about the differences in our reaction to the kitchen based on our respective taste backgrounds. The menu (in a hand-crafted, wooden case) offers a series of cocktails--I had the subtly done mango martini--and a decent wine list. The service was non-intrusive but pleasant. My conjecture is that given the Adams Morgan address with its bank of local residents who don't leave the area seeking other options (not only because the street is lively but because leaving implies the impossible task of getting a parking spot upon return), the restaurant can ride on its Thai ethnic laurels without differentiating its kitchen production from other competition. In other words, this is a gentrified and standard Thai restaurant. Not bad at all. Yet, I wouldn't make this a destination spot for a visit to Adam's Morgan. For Thai cuisine, I personally would go for the superlative Thai offerings in the Virginia 'burbs (Rabieng Thai) or in Maryland's Wheaton neighborhood (Nava Thai). read more

Absolutely wonderful experience at The Regent this evening! My sister and I arrived around 530pm and were the only two people there. We sat outside and were given water and menus immediately. The restaurant pays great attention to detail, starting with their painted wooden menus and matching receipt cases, to their initialed plates and cups. We split the herb spring rolls which were chilled and served with a thick peanut sauce. Yum! We each had a Thai iced coffee. They were very sweet, but refreshing in this muggy DC weather. My sister had the vegetarian Pad Thai and I had the Drunken Noodles with chicken. Both were great sizes and very tasty. Neither were too oily or dry. I am surprised to admit that I liked my sister's dish more than mine! It was citrusy and the crumbled peanuts on top were a great touch. The tofu was crispy and delicious! My Drunken Noodles definitely held their own, but they could have been a bit spicier. Now the absolute best best BEST part of the meal was the Mango Sticky Rice! Its made with condensed milk and small bits of sugar. Wow. Just writing about it now is making me drool a little. The mango was fresh and the rice was moist and it was a delicious sweet snack! This might be the best Thai food ive had, and not just in DC. Its more expensive than your average thai place, but the quality of the food is very worth it. Outstanding dishes. Lots of atmosphere, too...might take itself a bit too seriously, but, again, the food wont disappoint. I think its a hidden gem (partly because of its location, its overshadowed by Lauriol Plaza being just across the street...its also tucked away near the intersection of Florida Ave and U St., which is sort of a barren corner) in a city that really lacks a surplus of quality restaurants. I had trouble finding it the first time i went, because its easy to miss unless you know its there. All of those things also add to the charm, you get the sense that only the locals know about this place. I really enjoyed this location! Came on a date and sat outdoors. On the tables bug spray was provided and bug repellent candles were lit! I greatly appreciated that small convenience because the mosquitos were terrible. The food was good. I had the shrimp fried rice which was beautiful to look at and tasted good. It just needed a little salt to enhance the flavors, once added I was very happy. I had the blue lagoon martini. It tasted great but was a mucky green color when it came out. We had dinner last week on a beautiful spring weekday evening and everyone was sitting outside - not one table inside was taken! The food was excellent!
