The Reef Shoppe - Aquariums Near Me - Rochester, New York

I have experienced this shop on two different occasions and in different years/locations, and the experience was the same. Once when the shop was on east ridge road, and now in the current location, I believe it is on Culver and Norton. The owner is a smart A$$ and rude, especially to minorities or BLACK people, to be exact. Every comment out of his mouth is sarcastic and rude. The vibe of his establishment is a smug attitude and has a hint of prejudice. I visited with my daughter today, and they barely greeted us. We came looking to purchase a sump-ready tank but instead were met with a little man with a smart mouth. It took everything in me not to lash out. If I weren't with my kid, I probably would have, but instead, I let her see the fish, and I quickly left. The customer service level there is extremely LOW! and I would advise you not to go here. Best store in upstate New York. Always have high end stuff, great prices. They have the cleanest store I've ever seen, and take great care of there tanks. Not even sure if I've seen algae in the store lol. I've been going here for 11 years and have never got a sick fish or coral. The ONLY competently ran store in the Rochester area with knowledgeable staff (and therefore SOUND advice) to shop for live stock and supplies. The only time I seem to have issues with my tanks is when I listen to the advice of the nearby competitors! read more

The Reef Shoppe has a wide array of beautifully arranged corals, lively and colorful saltwater and freshwater fish, and a wide range of aquaria for the enthusiast! I was so impressed with the quality of The Reef Shoppe's tanks. My first thought walking in was, and I kid you not, "wow, look at all those colors." The vibrancy of the corals was just amazing and they had a very large selection of larger sized frags. I will admit, that their prices seemed a tad higher than some of the other places in town, but for the colors I saw it would totally be worth it. Their livestock seemed healthy, happy, and active and the tanks were absolutely pristine. I found the staff to be extremely helpful, kind, and passionate about what they do. The Reef Shop is by far Rochester's best aquarium store. I stopped in to pick up a couple of snails, and to get advice because my tank was green. Every other saltwater store would have shrugged me off, chalked it up to I didn't know what I was doing. Tom walked me through exactly why I was having the issues that I was having, what needed to happen to fix the issues, and he didn't once make me feel like I shouldn't be keeping saltwater. After addressing the issue I wanted to talk to him about fish, as I was hoping to get some that day. Any other shop would have taken this as an easy sale and sold me fish, but tom respectfully said that we shouldn't talk livestock until I get my new sump connected to the tank. Saved me alot of trouble and headache! I stopped in a few days later and chatted with 2 other employees and they were also extremely helpful and really knew what they were talking about!
