We got here early and it was the happy hour I read about (3-6), we did the Escargot (which I missed from Germany) and the fresh Oysters on the 1/2 shell appetizers. I was nostalgic for the snails but they lacked the parsley and some seasoning but they were perfectly presented and wicked hot with the toast pieces I adore. 8/10? Oysters were fat and fresh but almost seemed like one shell was missing it's oyster, but they were delicious. Husband had a Chocolate Old Fashioned that was astonishing! For dinner he did the Ribeye/Medium, with Asparagus & Baked Potato but the steak was very much Medium Rare but it was tasty and huge so no complaints from us. I had the Imperial Stuffed Shrimp, also with Asparagus and a Baked Potato. HUGE lump crab meat on the shrimp and very flavorful. We BOTH noted how delicious the charred Asparagus were, a hint of honey maybe that made them amazing, and they were large yet tender! Dessert: A delicious Crème Brûlée! Solid portion. I loved the nostalgia from the moment we walked in: old wood, high beamed ceilings, two fireplaces, some solid 80's music playing, so fun. Can't wait to come back! read more

So WOW is all I can say! My parents celebrated their anniversary every year here until after Charles Brown retired. The place is not the same, they visited recently this year only because I bought dad a gift certificate. They said their visit was horrible and will never go back. I also bought my husband a gift certificate for Father's Day which we put off going. Today my husband called and made reservations excited about a nice filet as his belated Father's Day meal. I was going to get chicken Chesapeake as I do not eat red meat. We arrive at the restaurant, I am seated as my husband is parking. I immediately noticed the completely wrinkled tablecloth with black permanent marker marks within, for a fancy high dollar well-known restaurant they should iron their table cloths and be sure they are clean. The lights so dim we could not read the menu. We wait about 15 minutes to order a drink as there were only five tables at this point. We review the limited New Years Eve special and learn this was the only menu which has no chicken options for dinner, only red meat options and one fish as I sit there and disappointment at a fancy expensive restaurant now not having an option for dinner. My husband says he should've been told when he called to make reservations that it was a limited menu. We have not eaten there since we got married 28 years ago we looked at the menu online ready to order having no clue it was limited and not serving what we wanted. We order a crab dip as a appetizer, my husband asks for a refill when the appetizer comes out and we place our dinner order. We ask what surf and turf is my husband was thinking it was a steak with a side shrimp as it was explained by the waitress. I had to interrupt and explain it is a pasta dinner with steak on top thank goodness I intervened or he would've been disappointed with his meal. He ordered prime rib. I ended up with a side salad because I do not eat red meat and there was not an entree option for me. Whoever come up with this menu was obviously not thinking many do not eat red meat. Many people look for chicken or chicken tenders which again there was no option. Our appetizer comes out and the crab dip had no "lump" crab meat as advertised. There was lots of red within such as imitation crab meat, possibly claw meat, another disappointment of advertisement, lump crab meat, and there is nothing in there as far as lump crab meat. The crackers that were given with the dip were stale. There was absolutely no crunch to them. We get through our entire appetizer my husband still had no drink. The waitress brings out bread, sets it on the table and says "here is bread and butter" and walks away. I looked at my husband and said bread and what there's no butter. She finally comes back out with my husband drink, and I looked at her and said you mentioned bread and butter. Where's the butter she gave me an odd look and said oh, and walked away. She comes back with the butter at this time, the bread is cold. Butter does not melt well in cold bread. Our meals then come out my husband's prime rib was a little on the cold side, very thin and very fatty. I had a small container of salad dressing, which I had to ask for a second because it was only enough for half of my salad. We were also ordering an orange crush drinks and they were garnishing grapefruits on top instead of oranges.Who puts a grapefruit on a orange crush. Not to mention the male waiter places the customers checks down the back of his pants half down the butt crack then this is placed on one's table who is eating. I really can't see how you are still in business as a higher end fancy restaurant. Never again will we be visiting nor recommend. read more

The food was pretty good but......two of us ordered a rye whiskey smash. The bartender probably poured warm whiskey in a glass and added tons of ice which resulted in a very watered down,tasteless drink. We both were not impressed at all. I never say anything when I'm not happy but this was ridiculous. The waitress got the manager and he came to the table ready for a fight. He wanted to argue that the drinks were fine. He probably was the one that made them. Who treats customers like this? He finally got us a new set of drinks after a long altercation. The waitress was friendly but service was very slow. Will never be coming back or recommend this place! My wife and I made a reservation for 7pm. We got there 10 min before and stood by the front area for 15 minutes. Servers were walking by and no one said a word, but an older white couple walked in and someone ran from the back for them before they even walked up to the desk. Hostess didn't ask for their names before grabbing menus but looked at me behind them and asked for name/reservation. She sat them and checked on server for them before even walking us back. After a long drive we stayed overnight in the Comfort Inn right next door to the Red Horse and decided to walk over for appetizers and drinks. What a delicious surprise this charming place is! We sat next to a warm open fire in a gracious dining room. Our attentive server was Tessa who was knowledgeable about the menu and helped make some recommendations. We started with side salads, Caesar and garden. Huge portions with crispy fresh ingredients. The lobster bisque here is sublime! Creamy and loaded with flavor. The bread is crusty and warm, perfect for dipping. We also had the stuffed mushrooms which were delicious. A stuffed baked potato was fluffy and perfect. Cocktails are potent and expertly prepared. I like bourbon in an old fashioned and it was perfect. Try this lovely place you won't be disappointed! I'd love to come back and try some of the creative sounding entrees! read more

Recently traveled from out of state to attend a surprise birthday party at The Red Horse. Party was held in recently renovated downstairs party room, which was spacious yet rustic and welcoming, complete with fireplace, full bar, wood trim and pleasant lighting and sound system. The menu consisted of a smorgasbord of various appetizers. Included was a large-chunk, delicious crab dip (Maryland, of course!), cheese sliders made with a high quality beef, fresh jumbo shrimp, tasty mini meatballs; there wasn't a disappointing offering on the table. All guests returned for second servings. The staff were friendly and accommodating. The locals at the party were all fans of the upstairs restaurant. These kind of older, rustic, family-operated restaurants are becoming harder to find. I'll definitely be trying the regular fare at this restaurant next time I'm in Frederick. read more

Prime rib dinner $45.00 each plus 3.00 each up charge for loaded baked potato, so $48.00 for thin cut prime rib (standard cut) steamed broccoli & potato. We ordered 3 cocktails total (no other alcohol or drinks, just water) which were watery, & 2 lackluster desserts. Terrible! Couldn't wait to get dressed up and go here for my 45th. Terrible service! By that I mean bringing bread, forgetting butter and saying you'll bring it but don't. Steak is $60 which is fine. Flavorless and salad is extra or basically any sides. Please just let me have a delish steak if that's your signature. Disappointed. With the experience of the new ownership, I was hoping for an improvement in both the dining rooms and menu. It was not different than the last gasp before the brothers sold and retired. The beef was only okay, no dry aged offerings at all. The salads were good but the hot sides left much to be desired. Guys. It's been a long time since I've written a review, but this experience compelled me to do so immediately after we dined. BLUF: don't waste your money. It's terrible. While the service was very good, that's where the "good" stopped. Literally everything we tried tonight, except the complimentary bread, was terrible. We started with a calamari appetizer. It was utterly tasteless. I got a side Caesar salad that was DROWNING in dressing. I never send food back but this was an exception. I could not eat it. I also ordered a cup of the soup of the day which was Italian wedding soup (which I normally love) and that was ruined for me too. It had one meatball that tasted like nothing and the broth was bland. I swear this place hasn't heard of any seasonings, including salt! I got the bacon wrapped scallops as my main dish and while small, was probably the best item of the night. But don't get too excited... it was merely adequate. Hubs got the "famous lump crab cakes" that should be called "infamous" for being expensive and gross. The majority was filler and the crab cakes were tiny! And they were $35! Accompanied with fries that had no salt or other discernible taste, I was told they reminded my husband of fries you'd microwave in a Kid's Cuisine frozen tray. I had a bite of the coleslaw that came with the meal and it tasted like... nothing. I might as well have eaten shredded paper. The jumbo fried shrimp he got on the side were large, but again, you guessed it, tasteless. I honestly do not understand how a place can take the concept of surf n turf and ruin it. It's so sad. We didn't even wait around to hear the desserts. We grabbed our check (which ended up being very pricy) and bounced. The best part of the meal? The free peppermints on the way out. My prime rib and corn arrived cold and the mashed potatoes were barely warm enough to eat. My wife said her salmon was bland. We were in a rush, so we just ate quickly and left. Meh, we've lived in Frederick now for 12 years. Came here after first moving here as it's the only real "steak house" in Frederick. Couldn't remember why we never returned but decided To give it another try. This time on Valentine's Day 2020. First, place was packed and the ladies seating people were overwhelmed. Despite this, we got seated reasonably quickly and close to our reservation time. Once seated drinks came quickly and I ordered a wedge salad. It was very good. Lots of bacon and blue cheese. Salad dressing came on the side in a small plastic cup. At these prices I would expect my salad to come dressed but that's ok, the salad was good. Now to entrees. I ordered the nights special. Prime Rib, rare. My wife ordered a NY strip med. My prime rib came out and it was well done. My wife's strip was barely cooked and purple and cold. She sent hers back for more cooking and when it came back out, it was much closer to rare than medium but she decided to live with it. After bringing back my wife's steak the waitress asked how my prime rib was. I told her overcooked. Her reply was that she couldn't do anything as it was the last serving they had. If you're serving prime rib and down to your last serving(s), please tell the customer what temp is available, they may want to change their order. I certainly did not want well done prime rib. Now to steak quality. It was good. Definitely not great. You advertise as a steak house I expect quality steak. Quite frankly, I could have gotten the same quality at outback or longhorn. My wife and I decided to have her birthday dinner here at The Red Horse, because we've never been to it yet and she wanted some quality steak for dinner. Now, about that...there wasn't much to quality all around. Except that the wait staff did look dressed professionally and were quite pleasant during our stay. We started with an appetizer of stuffed mushrooms with crab meat, there were chunks of crab shell within the stuffed portion of the mushroom on multiple bites. This was a disappointment because they actually tasted really good. My wife enjoys her steaks at a Medium Rare, a warm red center and perfect steak texture. It should be soft and juicy on the inside and firm on the outside. Well, her steak wasn't this at all. It was a mixture between "medium well and well done". There were a couple spots where there was some "Medium" parts, but mostly is was "medium well, well done". No juices were coming out of the steak when she pressed down on it. When the waitress asked how our food was, my wife expressed the issues with the steak. Surprisingly, the waitress came back with, "no, it a medium rare, there's pink there" and had a snappy attitude about the steak. She was quite adamant that the steak was correct as my wife had ordered versus how the steak actually was. For about $50 steak, this was an absolute fail. When people go out to a nice restaurant and pay good hard earned money, you expect high-quality food and service. Now the waitress did offer to take it back after arguing with us. We were simply shocked about her approach. I personally had the Po'boy fried oyster sandwich with fish and chips. Coming from Louisiana I had higher expectations of a Po'boy but this was a stretch and a nice attempt. It wasn't a fail, but it wasn't something I'd ever try again of the menu. The fish were ok at best. Top part was crunchy but the under side of the fish was soggy in the oil. Could be that the oil temp was wrong while cooking the fish resulting with unevenly cooked food and the mushy aspects. Or the cook drained the fish incorrectly by placing them onto paper towels or the such causes the fried food to become mushy/soggy. All in all, if you want to pay over $120 for food that is mediocre this is the place to go to. I'd suggest if you were looking for that kind of spending, find a better place that will serve quality food for Thai kind of price tag and you'll enjoy yourself far more. 2 stars because it was clean inside and the atmosphere was somewhat welcoming. read more

This place is advertised as a 'steak house' so I will only talk about the steaks - - not the poor lighting, horrible new LED parking lot lights, odd choice of background music, or the fact that there was only 3 tables seated in the entire restaurant (9 guests total) ON A PLEASENT SATURDAY EVENING FROM 7:30 TO 9 - - just the steaks (the $49 13 oz. Boneless Ribeye in particular). The steak I got was not edible: It had a 3/4" rind of gristle 3/4 of the way around the steak - I literally could not cut it with the knife (although why would I want to?). I am talking about gristle, not fat - I always eat the fat - normally my plate is clean when I am finished. And then there was the center of the steak: It was like a 'downtown map' of tendons throughout - the knife actually made a 'clicking sound' as you attempted to cut through it. Then there was the fact that I ordered 'medium' although a 'raw to rare' was delivered, but that was a mute point by then. Oh yeah - and the steak price increase ! Now I completely understand that material prices are going through the roof in 'these strange times' and I get it, but the Dead Horse has worked all of the points of this equation in the negative direction: Lower the raw material quality, employ inexperienced help, and increase the price ! BTW, My partner ordered the same steak with slightly better results, and although he can eat 'shoe leather' - he left ~ 1/4 of the steak gristle & tendons behind. read more

We didn't want to be rude so we ordered appetizers. But by the time they got there we realized eating them under those circumstances would be impossible. Got them to go. First off, we were the only people in the entire restaurant on a Tuesday night at 6:30. By the time we left around 8:30, not a single other customer came in. The waitress was fine but had a little bit of an attitude (I mean, I would too, if I were getting one table a day). The food wasn't great at all, my mom and grandma both got steaks that were so bland and not super tender (for the price they were, this was massively disappointing). I got the chicken parm and it was not worth the money, it wasn't good at all. The only reason I'm not giving 1 star is because they did bring a complimentary dessert for my grandmas birthday, which was nice. It was out 16th wedding anniversary. I have always wanted to tey this restaurant. We dont get out to eat often. It was worth the wait,we are sick of wasting our money on crap food at crap places that push you out. This was a very differnt experience. It had a wonderful calming atmosphere and our server(i wish i retained her name) was so kind and friendly with out ever pressuring us. The food was quality, fresh,well cooked,and love was in the plating. We were shocked time flew by, i would have to say it was the first time going out to eat was a relaxing enjoyable experience. The prices were not as bad. In todays atmosphere the prices are comparable to other places,though their quality exceeds the rest. First time i felt i got what i paid for in years. Every time we've passed this place in the last decade, my wife had said, "We should really go there sometime." Tonight we decided the time was right, and it was. Neat little place with rustic decor and a nice ambience. Great service. If you want quiet, ask for the dining room side, but we sat on the bar side and enjoyed it. I had a steak kabob which was delicious and my wife had apricot scallops. The desserts are made in-house and were wonderful. We had a large group for a birthday dinner recently. The table was ready when we arrived and service began right away. We shared several appetizers and all were very good. For dinner most of the group had steaks and they were cooked to perfection and very tender. One in our group had the salmon with crab and and also responded that it was delicious.
