We are sometimes skeptical that a restaurant with an extensive, many-page menu spanning multiple genres/ethnicities of food may not be able to do it all well. But the Red Dot seems to nail every single dish. We started with the multigrain vegan waffle with fresh fruit and loved it! So clean and flavorful, with perfectly ripe fruit. I do think the fruit should have been included, because it would have been a bit plain without it. Next, we had the ancient grains kitchari which was incredible. We loved all the fresh vegetables perfectly cooked, adding a variety of textures and flavors. It is offered as mild, medium, or hot; we got hot, which was great but not overly spicy, and we might request extra spicy next time. Lastly, we got the breakfast paratha wrap filled with their incredible tofu scramble. We were so impressed by how non-greasy it was (both the paratha and the scramble). We are always looking for food that isn't overly salty or oily, which is hard to find, but the Red Dot managed to do everything perfectly. Also major props to their masala chai, made super fresh with your choice of milk. The soy milk was creamy and pleasantly sweet and it didn't even require adding sugar. So rare to find vegan masala chai. The food takes fairly long to come out, but we felt it was worth it because of how delicious everything was; we also appreciated the generous portions. But we were the only people there, and it took over an hour to get our food (and we had 2 little kids with us). There isn't much that's worth waiting that long for. We waited over an hour for food, which I was told an hour into our wait, is completely normal. We had young children with us, so any kind of heads up on how long this was going to take would have been appreciated. We got none. And when I asked if it was normal to wait this long, I was met with attitude from staff. The food is good, but not so good it's worth waiting an hour and half. I'll also say the Catskills are rife with places just like this that make Moosewood Bible-esque dishes with kale and buckwheat and Indian-adjacent entrees. They'll tell you the food takes so long, because everything is made to order. You know what else is artisanal and made to order? Me making dinner five nights a week at home. The food itself is 10/10 stars. So delicious, healthy, and decent potions. However, the service is slow because they are understaffed. The Red Dot Vegetarian Kitchen may be my luckiest find since I started writing Yelp reviews. I spent over a month researching a Vegetarian/Vegan restaurant for my buddy's birthday. You know, something in the Albany Capital Region that had a proper menu and table service (a full restaurant). What I found were a number of cool little vegan sandwich shops and a big taste of the many woes of being a local vegetarian. So I started searching south in the Hudson Valley and Catskill areas. But the places I found had very limited menus and hours that were too early for a proper dinner. I started to wonder if vampires hunt vegans after dusk or something? Then came the day of the my friend's birthday hiking trip. I figured we'd wind up at a diner, Asian (stir fry), or Italian (pasta) place for dinner, but didn't want to ruin my trip worrying about it. So we hopped in the car, blasted our road trip playlist, and headed down to the Bear Hill Preserve to stand atop the cliffs overlooking the tri-state area. The day was beautiful and the views picturesque. As our adventure was about to come to a close, I popped open my Yelp app just to see if there was anything local. Low and behold, there amongst the wind swept mountains, I stood shocked and confused. My jaw hanging open like a Neanderthal discovering fire for the first time. The Red Dot Vegetarian Kitchen my beacon of hope, and only 8 miles away!?! So we drove down the mountain to the town of Wurtsboro, went inside, and were greeted by the friendliest of smiles. The waitress invited us to a table with natural sunlight, and then I began to notice that we were surrounded by artwork and creativity. This place really has a wonderfully positive vibe. But even more positive were the menus, which had a lot of great vegetarian and vegan choices -- that's right, a full NO MEAT menu. So we took some time to read through our options and placed our order. We started with the Pakora (Indian Fritters). They were delicious with a mild curry/tangy masala flavor and sweet chile sauce. At first it visually reminded us of a vegan calamari dish, lightly fried, and piled high. But as we dove in, we got pops of gorgeous herbal flavors such as cilantro, thyme, and basil atop the fried zucchini, sweet potatoes, and other yummy vegetables. We licked the plate clean... Next, my friend's Split Pea Soup came out. It too had a delicious herbal thyme flavor, with sauteed yellow onions, and green peas. While I'm not normally a pea soup fan, this had a great earthy flavor and natural sweetness that kept me intrigued. Then our main dishes came out. One friend ordered the Tofu Curry (minus the tofu) at medium heat. It was kind of perfect from what I tasted as the yellow curry, mixed vegetables, and coconut jasmine rice all worked incredibly well together. The medium spice had a perfect slow buildup in the back of my mouth and intensified with each new bite. My other friend got the Potato Kulcha (Stuffed Naan Bread). It had a lightly seasoned filling, crispy outside, had come with this curry spiced chutney-like thing that was absolutely amazing. It added a sweet finish to each bite and I kept going back for more (even though it wasn't my dish). I decided to be bold and try the Fish-less & Chips. It came with 3 battered fake fish fillets, lightly seasoned rustic fries, and a vegan house tartar sauce. I was really surprised that it actually tasted allot like fish and chips. Even the consistency of the fake fish reminded me of fish fillets, with a very light fish flavor, as cod tends to have. I was surprised and impressed! We all really enjoyed The Red Dot Vegetarian Kitchen and the fact that I discovered a full vegetarian restaurant while standing atop a mountain still blows my mind. More importantly, I was able to provide my friend with a proper birthday dinner, without him having to pick around the meat choices, or getting stuck with another stir fry or side salad. Needless to say, we'll definitely make this trip again in the future. read more

Two hours of sitting with 4 people as each dish came out randomly. At the end of the meal the roti and batura bread arrived. Requested paratha with no cilantro and they agreed but it must be pre-made because it was loaded with cilantro. Asked for pakora with sweet chili sauce on side and instead it came drenched in it. The food at the Red Dot Vegetarian Kitchen is excellent. But their service and coordination in the kitchen is amateurish at best -- or -- if the staff is professionally trained, then I'd say, "They may be good cooks but they are otherwise incompetent." We stopped around 2:00pm on a Sunday afternoon, not exactly prime time, and there was just one open table. It did not take long to realize why the place was full -- it takes forever for the kitchen to get the food out -- and thus an equally long time to turn over a table. When the server took our order, two in our party chose bowls of dal with sides of sour dough bread, another requested the multi-grain waffle (vegan) and I opted for the Indian savory pancake. The server informed us that they make everything from scratch so it takes some time to prepare the dishes. That was fine with us since our next scheduled activity wasn't until late in the afternoon. But when the first food arrived at the table the problems with the kitchen rapidly became apparent. The bowls of dal and bread were delivered first. The recipients politely waited for the rest of the food to come, but when it wasn't delivered within four or five minutes we urged them to dig in while it was still warm. They finished their soup and bread (enjoying the flavor immensely), and still the other two dishes had not arrived. One who ordered dal and bread decided he was still hungry and flagged down the server to order a plate of vegetable pakora. A while later the pakora were delivered (still no pancake or waffles). He ate his fill of the pakora (and shared some with the rest of us -- which was nice of him because we were still waiting for our pancake and waffles). By the way, the pakora were delicious. Finally the pancake and waffles came. I absolutely loved the pancake. A dense curry infused chickpea flour pancake held together a medley of nicely sautéed vegetables including spinach, red onion, green onion, tomato and cilantro. It was topped with a slightly savory, mostly sweet chutney -- a winning combination. Though the flavor profile was similar to dosa that I have eaten elsewhere, this was definitely a pancake. I also tasted the multi-grain waffle and it was first-rate too. But it is a shame the Red Dot Vegetarian Kitchen's kitchen doesn't have it's act together. Obviously I don't expect a synchronized team of runners to bring out the food and simutaniously set it before each patron (like they did at my last Michelin starred restaurant dinner), but all the entrees for a table should come out at essentially the same time. For half the party to be finished eating before the other half is served is inexcusable. So -- five well deserved stars for the food, one star, equally deserved, for the poor service out of the kitchen -- averaging out to three stars over all. As much as I enjoyed the food, if I should stop again and and experience the same un-coordinated kitchen problems I'll be revising my rating to one star and I won't be back. read more

This place is legitimately amazing! So crazy to find this place seemingly in the middle of nowhere but everything was amazing from the decor to the service through to the food. The inside of this place is super cute and features home made paintings and various art hung across the walls and sitting in the shelves. My friend actually ended up buying one of the most beautiful printed paintings from the artist while we were there (who is actually the chef at times!) because she loved it so much and asked if it was for sale. For an appetizer we got the Pakora which is thinly sliced vegetables with a thai chili sauce and some indian spices. It was absolutely enormous and honestly completely filled me up even though just my friend and I had split it (and didn't even finish it). It was super crispy and flavorful; the indian spices really put a nice twist to the traditional thai chili calamari-type dish. We got the side of sourdough bread and it was delicious- perfectly made, literally melted in our mouths. My friend got the vegan cream of mushroom soup which she said was super tasty and light. For her main course she got the Tofu Curry but with soy chicken instead of tofu. She was completely impressed and told me that this was the best curry shes ever had in her life! She even had to triple check with the waiter to make sure it was vegan because it was extremely creamy unlike any other vegan dish she had tasted. Lastly, I got the Kung Pao soy chicken dish and it was out of this world! It was enormous and filled with fresh vegetables and freshly cooked tender soy chicken. I could barely eat any of it because the appetizer was so huge and I was already full from everything we had eaten already. We will be back here for sure !! I absolutely love the food the tacos filled me up right away and I save the king pao to eat at work for lunch the next day ! The flavors are top tier ! I stopped eating meat over 5 months ago and wanted to stay away from seafood for a little while since I'm a huge seafood lover, but as you know we can't consume was food everyday due to high levels of mercury ! As a grownup the food was delicious and there were definitely plenty of options for my picky children. Looking forward to bringing them with me next time! I was so excited to eat here and was greeted with the worst customer service. Walked in and sat down and a lady named "Hannah" came out all the way from the back of the kitchen .: like made an effort to come out to saying they have a zero tolerance policy. Did not explain what the policy is and for what. She then went to tell us they have a no drug policy. She said she could smell weed all the way to the kitchen. I told her no one was smoking inside and she refused to serve us. Kept repeating there is a "corporate policy" .. they have two restaurants and one is in california where weed is everywhere. She kept trying to push us out and not serve us and kept saying corporate policy. Weed is legal in NYC no one was smoking indoors. I mentioned to her if I had a body odor would she refuse to serve me. Or is it because of the way we look (tattoos and Hispanic).
