Layla in Wurtsboro feels like the kind of family-owned place that has real potential, which made my…read moreexperience there all the more disappointing. When I arrived, the welcome felt noticeably cold. I ordered the advertised lemonade, hoping for something refreshing, but what I received tasted as though it had barely a trace of syrup. It was essentially missing the flavor that makes lemonade lemonade. While I waited, the person working there seemed more engaged in conversation with a local customer than with someone new to the establishment. When I tried to ask questions about the place and learn a little more about it, the answers were brief and distant. There is a difference between being busy and making a guest feel as though they are an interruption, and unfortunately, my visit leaned toward the latter. Small, family-run businesses often become memorable because of the warmth behind the counter--the simple feeling that someone is glad you walked through the door. Layla may have that potential, but on this particular visit, I left wishing there had been a little more hospitality, a little more attention to what was being served, and a much better glass of lemonade.

We were promptly greeted & told we would be seated , then they proceeded to ask someone already seated at a table to get up so we could all sit there, I was astonished. We were left at our table for 15 minutes without anyone taking our order ( they were not busy) & were about to leave when someone finally came over & took our orders ( they were out of empanadas , out of avocados & no home fries) Our food came out after another long wait and my husband's food was gross & he didn't even eat it. Nobody came to check to see how anything was or how we were doing. When he ordered coffee it came out in a paper cup - ok no big deal but the creamer came in a small plastic cup that you put a side of ketchup in for fries? At this point we just wanted to leave - check please -

We are sometimes skeptical that a restaurant with an extensive, many-page menu spanning multiple…read moregenres/ethnicities of food may not be able to do it all well. But the Red Dot seems to nail every single dish. We started with the multigrain vegan waffle with fresh fruit and loved it! So clean and flavorful, with perfectly ripe fruit. I do think the fruit should have been included, because it would have been a bit plain without it. Next, we had the ancient grains kitchari which was incredible. We loved all the fresh vegetables perfectly cooked, adding a variety of textures and flavors. It is offered as mild, medium, or hot; we got hot, which was great but not overly spicy, and we might request extra spicy next time. Lastly, we got the breakfast paratha wrap filled with their incredible tofu scramble. We were so impressed by how non-greasy it was (both the paratha and the scramble). We are always looking for food that isn't overly salty or oily, which is hard to find, but the Red Dot managed to do everything perfectly. Also major props to their masala chai, made super fresh with your choice of milk. The soy milk was creamy and pleasantly sweet and it didn't even require adding sugar. So rare to find vegan masala chai. The food takes fairly long to come out, but we felt it was worth it because of how delicious everything was; we also appreciated the generous portions. I think we have found one of our new favorite restaurants!

The burger was massive, delicious and cooked medium rare as I'd ordered it. The fries were tasty, too. The cookies though - if you love super soft and rich cookies you will love these! So buttery and warm, and the pecan cookie was loaded with nuts. The owner (or chef?) explained everything is cooked to order - even those yummy cookies. I was very happy with my meal and will return!

It's an old theatre so quite historic to be eating inside. The decor is very unique like you walked into someone's home for dinner with the family. The food is made fresh. Lettuce and tomato are organic, beef is never frozen, they have fresh home made potato chips. Their burger is HUGE on a brioche bun. It's the greasy gourmet burger that is filling and worth the money. Their Cajun shrimp Mac and cheese is delicious! Ending it with their organic Mexican coffee was the perfect dessert. Only thing to remember is that there's no bathrooms so you have to go next door to Nellys sports bar. With that in mind, there's one chef making all the food so you sacrifice some time for fresh made food which is still well worth it. There's street parking in front of the store.
