a slice of cheese pizza in a box

I've grabbed lunch here a couple of times in the past week as we've started moving into our new home in Rock Hill. It's a perfectly fine pizza joint, and I expect we'll be ordering here for years to come. Takeout service was solid both times. I waited on my takeout order the first time, and it came out quickly. The second time I called ahead, and it was ready when I arrived. They are not doing indoor dining at the moment, but they do have picnic tables around the restaurant (the snow flurries and rain on my two visits made this a moot point). Their prices offer good value. $2.10 a slice and $12.75 for a large plain pie is a bargain compared to the Westchester prices I am used to. Ditto the chick parm hero/wedge/sandwich at $8.25. The food itself passes muster. The plain slice I ordered was foldable, which is a reasonably impressive achievement 90 miles away from Manhattan. The chick parm wedge was hot and stuffed to the gills with cheese, sauce, and bird. It was all textbook, if otherwise unremarkable, and sometimes that's exactly what you want. Pizza the Rock meets the standard, and I don't think we'll ever hesitate to grab a pie or a wedge here when we're hungry.

The menu.

I'll be honest with you. The only reason we got off the highway is because my wife had to use the restroom. Women, amirite guys?* Going forward, my new reasons for getting off the highway here: 1. The biggest chicken parm hero I've ever even eaten. 2. Served by the nicest people I've ever met. 3. The most adorable Christmas decorations I've ever seen in slice joint. 4. Excellent homemade cookies by the register. 5. Superheroes. Not every eatery has Captain America, The Hulk, AND Ironman guarding the front doors. Now, to be fair, this was not the best chicken parm hero I've ever had (nor was the Sicilian slice anything to e-mail Mom about). But it was damn tasty, and very affordable. Did I mention it was the biggest thing I'd ever seen? And yes, I definitely felt ill after eating the whole thing, but that's no one's fault but my own. ________________ *Please don't murder me in my sleep, dear.

I don't often vomit but this place made me sick. A frozen pizza is better than this place. No no no. Stay away.

Eggplant parm is by far the best locally and pizza made to order- just like we ordered it. Perfect.

For dinner I order the French pork chop saltimbocca with spinach, mushrooms, and marsala sauce topped with fontina cheese. Very very good, thick pork chop also. This dinner also had a potato croquette, stuffed with potato, and a smokey cheese. Delicious! Samantha who was working our table was superb with a nice personality.

We ordered the French onion soup and it was excellent. I knew the soup would be great as Kevin is a chef and takes pride in every aspect of his creations. My wife had the hanger steak salad which is served on top of large plate of leafy green with fresh vegetables and some wedge fries, it was solid! This was one of the daily specials and did not disappoint. I had another one of the specials an oyster po-boy. The bread was delicious and they must make it in house. The greens were fresh and the tomatoes sweet however there were only two small oysters on each half of the sandwich? Very small and really unnoticeable give the size of the sandwich. I was really disappointed because I love oysters and was surprised that they didn't add more to the sandwich. It was served with a nice spicy mayonnaise and homemade fries. Maybe they were running out of oysters, which they should have just taken it off the menu. Either way I'd rather have a traditional Po-boy loaded with oysters and less of the greens and tomatoes. The taste was on point but disappointing for the lack of oysters. I will definitely go back but I won't order this item again. See photo! The staff was very attentive and the atmosphere was cozy.

JJ Delicatessen has an excellent assortment of meats, cheeses and dried goods, many from European countries like Germany and Poland. My girlfriend and I ordered sandwiches on a Saturday morning. We had to wait a little over twenty minutes, and the woman advised that next time we call our orders in ahead of time because the hot sandwiches take awhile. So that's your tip for the day. But they were worth waiting for. Fairly priced, excellent quality, and came with a few sides. I got the Polish sandwich special and my girlfriend got the Mediterranean sandwich special. There is a small seating area in the deli, but we took them with us and ate them in the car. It was a great lunch that we ate right before an afternoon of hiking at High Point State Park in NJ. Highly recommend this deli!

It seems like this is something of an institution and even for first-timers like us, it's not hard to see why. It's a European-leaning local deli that is clean, well stocked with interesting goodies, and that's is a cozy dining room in the front end of the shop. The two ladies we interacted with were fairly friendly and helpful, and after an agonising few minutes looking at the menu, we decided on the Polish and Italian sandwiches (vs heroes, which are bigger, cost a bit more, and are served on a roll). What I liked was the fresh tasting pickle that comes with the sandwich. In fact, the pickle may have been my favourite thing, period. The macaroni salad and potato salad were enjoyable if not particularly memorable. Now, the sandwiches. They look great, delicious even. We could tell they were made with care. From the first bite though, so I could think was, why's this SO salty? To this day, we're not sure what the culprit(s) were. Without the saltiness, I think they could have been delicious sandwiches. Perhaps this is how the locals like it. Maybe this is some sort of traditional way to prepare these sandwiches. All I know is that it traumatised my taste buds so much that I didn't have an appetite for another meal for the rest of the day. And of course I was quite thirsty for a few hours afterwards. I hope they keep improving and stay open for many more years.

We stopped in for breakfast and had a blast exploring the holiday-themed sundries around the store (we ended up buying an ornament and a gorgeous sweater. Where else could you buy such things with breakfast?!). I don't know who's in charge of stocking the store but judging from how well curated these goods were, it's clear they know what they're doing. There were lots of local goods, like beers, wines, and maple syrups, and then some fineries like the Momofuku sauce line, luxury bath goods, and Anthropologie clothes. For a small shop, the menu was also unexpectedly robust. Along with your usual lineup of breakfast and lunch sandwiches and wraps, there were a few unusual ones that piqued our interest. The whole hot dog menu, for instance, makes for a fun and curious read. Want to try the Canadog? It comes with maple syrup, peanut butter, and bacon. Or how about the L.A. Japadog, with teriyaki sauce, nori, and mayo? We weren't brave enough to try, but I'm left haunted by what could have been. Our own sandwich choices were fantastic. Everything is made to order, so it took a few minutes, but we certainly weren't short of things to see while waiting. There are two small two-seating tables in the shop, and we were lucky enough to snag the table with the giant bevy of hot sauces (see picture). The people behind the counter are kind, friendly, and warm. There was a steady stream of customers during our visit, and it seemed like many of them were neighborhood folks coming in for their breakfast and snacks to go. All the interactions we overheard gave off small-town, Gilmore Girls vibes, and we were glad to be part of it for a short while. This is a fantastic little shop-and-cafe combo, definitely worth dropping in if you're in the area.
