So I came to The Ranch feeling very excited! I decided to try this place because I kept seeing it all over their social media. I went in without any expectations. Cons: Do not get the bread unless you want to pay. They kinda make it seem free but word it in a way that can be taken "free" but if you listen really closely the waiter will state "would you like me to add bread to get you started?" Their menu lists sourdough and focaccia at $7 each, but we only received sourdough. I feel like we shouldn't have been charged full price for something that wasn't accurate to the menu description. The restaurant serves a la carte, so you pay separately for your meat and sides. I don't mind that, but if a ribeye is $70, I expect it to be the best cut of meat I ever tasted! It makes me question what makes their meat worth the higher price. They also didn't have house-made ranch...ONLY Hidden Valley which is odd for a high-end steakhouse. The service was slow as well. At this price point, I expect both quality and timely service. For four people, the total came to $407. At $407, the food should be exceptional, and I shouldn't have to wait 15 minutes to receive it after the rest of my table has already been served Pros: The lasagna was delicious. The food was overall good. The service on the other hand wasn't the greatest. It took our server 5-10 minutes to come to our table when we were first seated. We ordered bread and thought it was just taking a while which was fine but once we saw the table next to us get their bread we knew it wasn't coming. Our plates came out first and we had to wait for our sides. After we finished eating it took our waitress 10-15 minutes to come to our table. We had asked for a box and the check she was quick to bring the check to the table but we never got our box. The table next to us asked their waitress and she instantly got it for them. We had to get up and go ask someone for a box because we sat waiting for 15 minutes. We watched our waitress serve a table that was sat instantly and provided their drinks, bread, and an appetizer within the first 10 minutes of being seated. read more

We came here expecting a fine dining experience, but unfortunately, the restaurant missed the mark. The NY steak lacked flavor and was far from memorable. Cocktails were inconsistent and took an unreasonably long time to arrive, which really disrupted the flow of the evening. For a large party, we had a dedicated server, but "dedicated" is a stretch--the server frequently disappeared and seemed disengaged. At this price point and with the ambiance they advertise, we expected attentive service and exceptional food. Instead, we left feeling disappointed and questioning the value. Finally got to try out The Ranch and we will be back. The owners have been great for years with Pizzanos, Tazzaria and then rolling those two into Bistro di Bufala which is one of our family's favorites. The Tapas/Apps are great and not something you find elsewhere in Visalia. The main courses for the most part are a la carte, for 5 of us two veggie and two starch tapas/sides were plenty. The steaks were prepared as requested, the gnocchi and risotto special very good and the pork chops was good, sweet/spicy flavor which was good. We've read some prior reviews and to each their own, we expected it to be good due to all our prior experiences with this family and we were not disappointed. I think they are finding their stride as they've settled in. The venue is cool, a very nice makeover of the old Glick's Meat Market. Next time I want to sit in the bar area where you can see the kitchen in operation. Couple things to make it even better as it is not cheap: a little faster clearing of the table between courses and maybe an extra stop to check on drinks and if anything is needed. Too full for dessert this time but knowing how good they are at Bistro I would expect those to be great. Overall, a very nice evening. read more

We went to an early dinner here and had a great time! We started with the sourdough bread, calamari, and burrata appetizer, which were all delicious. Most of us ordered cocktails which were good, I was sad that a cocktail I'd been exited to try wasn't on the menu anymore. For dinner, I ordered the tartare and a grilled Caesar salad which were both phenomenal. Our server, Dakota, was attentive and kind. We loved her! The ambiance was well decorated and cozy. The only part of the night that was a bummer was that we brought in an outside dessert (birthday cake) and we knew there was a $5 outside dessert fee, which we were fine with since we'd be using their dishes. It turned out to be $5 each (so $30) just for them store it and bring it out with our candles in it, they offered to slice it but we said we'd do that. Had we known it would've been $30 we probably would've let them slice it and used their candles. Not a deal breaker but definitely something to keep in mind if you plan on bringing a birthday cake! Overall we had an amazing experience and I'm excited to go back for a date night. read more

As a Visalia native, I eagerly watched the transformation of Glick's into The Ranch. The exterior, with the twinkle lights adorning olive trees and a vintage truck, feels like you are heading into an elegant farm space on the outskirts of town. Inside the upscale rustic decor felt warm and comfortable - very different from the deli that was there in my childhood. The service was excellent - friendly, professional staff that answered questions and offered selections. I was looking forward to ordering a steak - and there were several options, however, the daily special menu almost deterred me from my original plan, as they offered a great variety guaranteed to satisfy. The tapas menu offered wonderful pairings for the steaks - we ordered the broccolini which came out with a delicious chili sauce. The drink menu was very create and the wine options were extensive. From start to finish, the experience felt very upscale. I'm looking forward to going back. read more

The lighting was so dim we had to use our phones to read the menu, and the service was very slow. One person in our group actually received her steak over an hour after the rest of us finished, though our server was kind and kept apologizing. The food was mixed. The pork belly portion was surprisingly small for the price, the sirloin came out tough and lacking seasoning, and the asparagus side was just a few pieces. Cocktails were okay but nothing memorable. The seafood special I had was the standout delicious, but a small portion and no sides for around $65. One thing to keep in mind: there's only one single-stall restroom, so expect a wait during busy hours. I was very disappointed in my menu, we where a group of 10 ppl so yes I knew gratuity would automatically be added. I had ordered the waygu top sirloin no mix drinks only water. My steak wasn't that great, and only served a little pieces of steak 4 slices. Pretty much the menu is a la cart so everything is separately. I paid $90 just for me. Not worth it at all. I could have gone to a better steak house and spent less for quality meat and better food. Our server wasn't great too but they know with a large party they getting their tip regardless. We should have just gone to Texas Roadhouse instead. I rather had went to Cheyennes in kingsburg way well worth it best steaks close by if you haven't gone you definitely need to try you will not be disappointed. read more

We were excited to eat here for the first time and splurge and enjoy a night out.. it was good at first we got the fried potatoes and calamari as our sides, calamari was alright, could've been frozen breaded calamari by the taste. We then waited an hour and a half for our food because they ended up giving our food to the wrong table and not realizing until 30 minutes later. They then gave their original food to them and told them not to worry about it. They won't charge him for the extra food then they came up to our table and told us it's gonna be a couple more minutes. Really waited another 30 minutes just to get our food actually delivered to our table. They didn't comp anything on our meal give us any free dessert a free meal anything at all it was a win-win and the other people situation because they got a free dinner and their original meal and it was a loose loose for us because we waited an hour and a half for our food and got absolutely nothing in return to make us feel better about the situation. I feel like the waiter just ignored that we were upset about the weight and after setting our plate down for seven minutes, asked us if we wanted boxes. Felt rushed after having to wait an hour and a half for our food. SEVEN minutes our plates were on our table when he came up and asked "did we need boxes tonight seems like we're slowing down?" .... Ruined our experience and wouldn't recommend to anyone who wants a smooth nice dining experience. read more

A New Approach for Visalia First time dining here-- it has been open for a few months. Located just off downtown, the building was (forever) a well-known. family-owned meat market. That establishment, at least in the later years, included luncheon items -- sandwiches and such. If memory serves, some years ago new owners attempted to make it a fully fledged barbecue restaurant, but that didn't last long. The current owners (who also operate at least one very successful Visalia restaurant) have completely changed the look and feel of the place: a very tasteful planting of olive trees along the street, significantly expanded parking, and complete remodeling of the structure have done wonders. Inside, at least in the large front dining area, the atmosphere is calm and generally pleasant. Some people might be put off by the animal heads and skulls (hunting-trophy style) along the walls. There are enough two-, four-, and eight-top tables to accommodate quite a few people. This does not include the two dining areas slightly further back, one with a view of the bar and the kitchen (diners can marvel at the Argentinian- and Brazilian-style meat preparation), and another, somewhat private room that holds maybe 15 or 20 people. All in all, the atmosphere is very pleasant. I was slightly put off when we were greeted and shown to our table; the young gentlemen who led us there was, apparently, chewing gum. I know that I'm old-fashioned, but this does not cut it for a fine restaurant. Not even for a diner, for that matter. The menu is very large and quite varied. There is quite a good selection of steaks, with a variety of other dishes, including seafood and pasta. There's an enormous appetizer/tapas page, in lieu of sides for any of the meals. I did not look at the wine list, but chose a glass of a nice Zinfandel to accompany my meal. We were offered, and accepted, a starter of grilled sourdough with butter. Grilled bread is grilled bread - it was good, but nothing to shout about. The butter served with it was a bit on the sweet side; each of us would like to have seen maybe a dipping oil with some herbs, or even herbed butter. Still, it was very good. The two of us had tagliatele with steak tips and a teres major dinner; both were absolutely excellent. Our shared side was cauliflower with pork belly-- almost too tasty, we regretted leaving a few bits of cauliflower. All servings were very generous, and we took almost half of the entrees home. If I must offer some criticisms - other than the presence of the chewing gum noted above -- I note first that, early in our visit, the overhead music was a bit loud; later in the meal, it seemed to have calmed down a bit and was very nice. The other small "minus" was the fact that the service was fairly slow. We were not in a hurry, and it's a good thing. From the time we ordered to the time that we received our meals ran about 45 minutes. This is the sort of thing that works very well in some cases--if there's a small appetizer, cocktails, etc. We had neither of those options. And our glasses of wine arrived perhaps five minutes after our entrées. Very curious. I will be happy to chalk that up to some slight miscommunication, but it's a little tough to explain because the place was perhaps only half fall at the time. Still, I understand that issues can and do arise. The small negatives aside (the service lapses and gum-chewing are what kept me from giving five stars), this was a highly enjoyable meal in a very pleasant atmosphere. Hate to say but very underwhelming. I love steaks and would pay 100$ for one if they're great. This definitely was not the case.I got a 20oz Ribeye and about 14 oz of it was bone and fat. Sides were ok at best. We were seated in the bar and didn't know you needed a flashlight to read menus. Wanted it to be good so I didn't have to drive further to get a good steak. First off I wanna say I am somewhat of a restaurant connoisseur and I only go to family owned businesses. I love their choice of ambience very comfortable. Definitely something new to Visalia.. The food has amazing flavor, creative New, California culinary dishes along with old-fashioned flair very tasty. I'm kind of a big guy so I could use a little more portion but highly recommend giving the food to try as far as service. Greeted by amazing friendly staff at the front wonderful smiles. Listen to my needs the service staff was excellent at covering menu items and answering questions about dishes that they were serving I understand the menu may change quite regularly so it might always seem like something new, at this point in time five stars highly recommended. read more

This is definitely one of my favorite restaurants! I have been there 4 times since they opened. I absolutely love the window where you watch the chefs at work! The ambiance and decor is amazing the food is so delicious. We ordered the calamari, wedge salad, roasted chicken, Wagyu steak with cabernet sauce, mashed potatoes, roasted veggies, bread and whipped butter. Everything was delicious. The chicken is hands down my favorite. Whatever they do to the calamari it is the best I have ever had. The drinks are also the delicious I had a paper plane and they have a wonderful selection of wine, Trefethen chardonnay being my personal favorite. I have nothing negative to say. Service is great, bar is great, food is delicious and the restaurant itself is beautiful. read more

Our first time at The Ranch last night for our anniversary. We had made reservations and were seated right away. Received our cocktails (yum!) and ordered. It took a while to get our dinners as it was really full, but when we got them, they were hot and so good! I will probably order the same things next time we go there. Our waiter was attentive and friendly. It was a little loud in there, making it hard for my husband to hear me, but I'm used to repeating myself! Loved the interior design also. The ambiance is outstanding-very well decorated. However, we were seated back in the bar area and it filled up and was so loud we couldn't carry on a conversation! I felt sorry for the couples who were seated at the two seater tables! They were so close together that I bet they would be able to bump elbows and hear the others conversations. So if going for an intimate/romantic dinner make sure to ask to not be seated in bar area. It was neat being able to see them cook/prepare food through the glass area though. Service was ok-my entree was somehow forgotten. They did comp me so I give them a big thumbs up for that! However, waiter came by once to refill drinks and really needed to do that more. Food was above average but for the price I wanted it to knock my socks off, which sadly, it didn't. All in all, go once for the experience and check it out. Server was TOP NOTCH (Dakota) her 'helpers' not so much. The attempt at ambiance is nice, decor is ranch style and rustic. Seating is CRAMPED! Walkways are tight, encroaching on other diners and some tables seem like flimsy patio furniture. Food... was odd and overpriced. Salads come with their specific dressing and sometimes NOT as DESCRIBED, sides are ordered al a carte as mains come solo. Bread is ordered as an appetizer not complimentary. Ribeye was small and overcooked (ordered med-rare served well done). Teres Major steak comes cooked and pre-cut felt like a toddler having my steak cut for me! Bar was not prepared for service, kegs had not been checked prior to opening apparently but Old Fashioned was on point. The service at this establishment is horrendous. We had called and made a reservation a week in advance and were accepted to be accommodated. When we arrived they told us they had no record of our reservation. The waitress who served us would be absent for over 30 minutes at a time and repeatedly forgot to get us simple things like silverware and plates. The portion sizes for the food were awful and incredibly overpriced. The food was greatly undercooked compared to what we had ordered. The ambiance was not good, as the music would continuously cut out. I would not recommend this restaurant to anybody who wishes to attend. read more

DT Visalia restaurant , in the "new thriving hub" of Downtown Visalia, along Murray Avenue and Willis. (1852 just next block west which pops even at 9 am random Saturday morning , then there's Davornes, two Mexican restaurants, coffee shop, and down the street 4 Seasons BBQ) ...wish Main Street property owners came up with a new revitalizing plan or a working steering committee, they are very smart and got the bucks, but vacancy , vacancy, vacancy........for years .....Chop Suey empty for a decade my guess,,,now famous Hong Kong restaurant and empty lots with plywood mural.....across from Fox theater, reached out with ideas but no interest by DT folks ...Ranch restaurant was everything I wanted and expected,....A#1 service , food, ambiance ...just terrific ...the owner and crew I think nailed it ...read some other reviews but my view is they're just a bunch of peanut gallery reviewers ...talk is cheap, I salute this new endeavor ...make visalia great again ...Great job James.. read more

This place it's just hyped because it's sooo new. My wife and I came here for our anniversary dinner, and I was ready for some extravagant food. I was really hoping this would be like Vintage Press or the Elderwood restaurants, but I was let down soooo bad. The meat had no flavor whatsoever so ever, my plate and my wife's plate were flavorless . For the price of the food I was waiting for my taste buds to go crazy with all the flabors. The ambience its amazing and the service was great as well, but you go to a restaurant to eat great and amazing food. You don't go a restaurant for the ambience or great the place looks. I'm sorry to say that I will rather go to the Vintage Press if I want to spend money like this. Maybe the chef was having an off night. The only good thing in this place is the hazy IPA beer and pistachio cake as well. Just the main dishes were tasteless, and not satisfying. I know this review doesn't really matter to the owners, because I'm just 1 customer out of hundreds they get. I have eaten in many great restaurants and by far this was 1 of the most disappointing by far. Don't spend your money here go to the vintage press or the rooftop, you will enjoy the food and spend the same amount and you will actually come out with a smile on your face and a happy stomach. read more

We had the Ranch for the first time since its soft opening. We had a few cocktails Forbidden sour was an amzing twist on a classic. The fresh baked sourdough was great although with the food prices I feel like bread should be complimentary. We started the meal with the pork belly appetizer PHENOMENAL! My wife ordered their Tomahawk Pork Chop which was possibly the best porkchop I have ever had! I ordered their Ca Wygu New York Strip. I was severely dissapointed with this steak. It had little seasoning and was heavy and greasy. I have eaten wygu more than once and this steak was not up to my standards. I ended the meal with the Creme Brûlée and it was divine. All in all it was a great experience my only suggestions would be to not charge $7 for 4 slices of sourdough and to not serve Wygu unless the chef knows how to prepare. The atmosphere was amazing as well SERVICE WAS A 5/5. Overall it was a solid 4 star experience just cant get past the not so good Wygu. I have also seen people on here complaining about not being able to go here strictly to drink. I Am sure I speak for most people when I say that I loved that the bar wasnt filled with drunks. read more
