    Kong-guksu (soybean noodles)
    Thu-Ha T.

Cute family owned spot serving Korean/Chinese noodle, rice, and appetizers. We've had lunch there and have ordered for pick-up. We enjoyed the Jjam Ppong (spicy seafood noodle) which came with a generous amount of seafoods. The Jja Jang Myun (black bean noodle) was a favorite among the kids. The Kong-guksu (soybean noodles) is a cold noodle soup with a refreshing soybean broth (add salt to your liking). The Tangsuyuj (sweet and sour pork) came with a small cabbage salad with a light dressing. Overall, the noodles all tasted fresh and perfectly cooked. Flavorings were on the light side and portions are good. I would like to try their frozen kimchi and pork dumpling next time to prepare at home. Located in the plaza southeast of Reseda Blvd. and Prairie St., with plenty of parking spots.

Craving some jja jang myun and tangsuyuk for lunch (blaming it on the new K-drama I'm binge-watching). This small, family-owned restaurant gets pretty lively--especially after Sunday church service, when all the old Koreans come here for lunch. The food isn't something to brag about, but it hits the spot when you're craving that classic Korean-Chinese combo. They are very stingy with ban Chan. I still have my go-to spots in K-Town for jja jang myun and tangsuyuk, but this place is good enough to satisfy the craving and avoid driving to ktown. There is plenty of parking, and they accept credit cards, which is always a plus.

Came on a Wednesday night around 8pm was sooo good Love coming here honestly hidden gems and one of the few places you can get really good Korean food. Service is quick and reliable when you need something. The waitress knew we needed a fork before we asked Presentation of the food is superb loved the atmosphere really feels like you're in Korea Portions are so big! Lots of parking Togo containers are .75 cents each! Support local businesses!

The food was sooo good and the restaurant so very calm and clean. A little difficult to communicate with staff but that's how you know it's authentic. 9.5/10 definitely recommend

I ordered the kimchi bokkeumbap, jajangmyeon, jjamppong, tangsuyuk, and dak-nalgae twigim, and honestly, everything was outstanding. I don't have a single complaint other than wondering why this place doesn't have more reviews. It truly feels like a hidden gem. The portions are huge and the prices are very reasonable for how much food you get. Every dish had something special about it, but it's really best experienced firsthand. I'd recommend coming with a group of five or six so you can try multiple dishes, or just plan to take leftovers home because it's that good.

chicken katsu with jja jang myeon! side dishes like kimchi and pickled radish too!

this place is such a cute spot with such a welcoming atmosphere! being a walk's distance from csun's campus, my friends and i frequent this place and are met with exceptional service and hospitality every time! the front lady is so kind and checked up on our table multiple times, and she even offered to take a group photo for us when she noticed we were struggling to do so!! the food is delicious and comes in huge portions with korean side dishes (their kimchi is wonderful with plain white rice i found!). the quality for the price is unmatched, and it's a good idea to order family-style so you can try the most for your experience! i loved the chicken katsu, the black bean noodles (jja jang myeon), and the shrimp fried rice! we licked our plates cleaned and popped into the boba shop right next door for a sweet treat, such a killer location! will be returning soon!

This spot opened in a small plaza next to CSUN about a year ago, they have another location in Koreatown. It's a nice family business. Shared parking lot with the other businesses but plenty of parking. Went on a Friday evening, no wait, sat right away. Sue (not sure if I spelled it correctly) was extremely nice and explained the items on the menu since it was our first time. She was very nice, kind, and attentive. Ambiance: cute place, decorated beautifully and cozy. Food: tteokbokki, fried chicken wings, black bean noodle. Everything very good, large shareable portion size and decent pricing! 3 dishes and 1 drink was about $53, took home lots of leftovers as well. (They charge for To-go boxes)

My sister and I were looking for a place to eat at and we decided to check the menu outside the restaurant. We didn't know exactly what we were looking for but the menu was enough to get us inside. We really liked the interior of the restaurant. It was casual, but felt very intimate and homey. The lady let us sit anywhere and went through the menu since it was our first time. We had explained that we didn't eat certain food, which limited us to a couple of dishes. From there, we opted to get the tteokbokki, kimchi fried rice, and the fried chicken. To say it simply, we absolutely enjoyed our meal. The fried chicken didn't feel very oily, crunch on the outside and tender on the inside. It was seasoned nicely and came paired with a cabbage slaw. The kimchi fried rice was okay, but the highlight for us was the tteokbokki. Perfect combination of sweet and a kick (for y'all who don't tolerate spice very well). The rice cakes were soft and chewy and the fish cakes were sliced very generously. This also paired really well on top of the kimchi rice. Heads up, if you have leftovers, they do charge a $1 for a certain type of container. Overall, we really liked our experience! The lady was so sweet and helped us navigate their menu. Definitely recommending!

First time at Ppong and enjoyed my lunch! All the dishes had the right amount of spice. Would definitely come back if I'm in the area. Service was quick but could have been more attentive. We had to stand up ourselves to get our water refilled and they also charged extra for to go boxes for our leftovers.

Jjamppong has wood ear mushrooms, cabbage, onions, mussels, squid, scallop, shrimp, AND crab. This is heaven in a bowl.

5 stars! The jjamppong at The Ppong in Northridge is outstanding--an abundant, seafood-packed bowl with a bold, satisfying broth and springy noodles. It comes with a spread of homemade side dishes that taste fresh and thoughtfully prepared, rounding out the meal perfectly. What really made the visit special was the owner, who personally served me. She was incredibly kind and shared how much pride she takes in their homemade recipes and maintaining high standards--you can taste that care in every bite. I did try the shikhye slush, and it wasn't for me--the rice texture was off and the flavor leaned a bit sour, so I'd pass on that next time. But the jjamppong alone is worth the trip, and I'll absolutely be back to explore more of the menu. Highly recommend.

My friend and I were looking to try a new Korean spot and stumbled upon this hidden gem on a Thursday morning. As big Korean food lovers, I can honestly say this is as authentic as it gets (especially here in the valley!). We were warmly greeted as soon as we walked in, and even during the lunch rush the service was quick and friendly. We ordered the kong guksu, tteokbokki, and pork mandu. The food came out in about 10-15 minutes, steaming hot and fresh. It was my first time trying kong guksu (cold soybean noodles), and I found it pleasantly refreshing with a clean, light flavor. I personally would've preferred it a little saltier, but it was still enjoyable. The mandu, however, completely won me over! It was perfectly crisp on the outside, flavorful inside, and even better when we added it to the tteokbokki. The restaurant itself is clean, minimal, and modern. It's on the smaller side, but I didn't mind. I didn't notice a bathroom though. Overall, this place is definitely worth a visit. My friend and I will absolutely be coming back for more!

Katsu chicken .. really delicious .. love the kimchi and cabbage that comes with it
    Scott K.

This is a new discovery for me .. right in my neighborhood.. which is a delight .. I had the Katsu chicken which was really delicious and I love all the things it comes with .. some kimchi (not the standard Japanese kimchi) this was different and delicious.. and some cabbage .. rice and pickles .. this all made for a really terrific lunch .. try it !

Had no idea what we were getting ourselves into. We were coming for the black bean noodles...ended up getting the steamed kimchi dumplings, the spicy seafood noodle soup and the crispy pork belly. Perfection! The lady at the front was handling the crowd and orders graciously. And I loved the atmosphere and the music that was playing. They sell their own home-made kimchi, I definitely would like to try some take home next time.

We only tried the carbonara udon, but it was truly memorable. The sauce was creamy although a little split, but not overly salty which allowed the subtle umami and miso flavors to shine. Marugame Monzo's sauce, however, is the opposite of Menchirashi's. The sauce is SUPER flavorful with a rich, creamy mouthfeel and a strong umami flavor from the bacon and miso. I added mentaiko since I did the same at Menchirashi and honestly, everything was fantastic. The udon itself is pretty much exactly like fresh udon in Japan. Perfectly bouncy, chewy, and satisfying. Staff were also wonderful and service was insanely fast. We probably waited less than 10 minutes for both our udon and tempura, and they consistently checked in to make sure everything was good. I can't wait to come back and try more of their menu, especially the uni cream udon. The only thing I didn't like was the shrimp tempura since it had a lot of batter and not a ton of shrimp, so it was on the greasy side. I did enjoy the soft boiled egg tempura though. The yolk exploded into the udon and somehow made the whole bowl even better hehe. There are plenty of tables inside with limited bar seating. If you're a 2 top you might be sharing a table real close with some neighbors (they put a divider). If there's a wait, write your name down on the clipboard outside!

There is sometimes street parking but the availability is rough, it's tough to park, and even one of the meters we ended up at just didn't work. They only charge a $5 cash service charge though, which isn't bad. We were lucky to be seated right away, even in a packed restaurant. The restaurant has a surprisingly modern design, and is comfortable for as small as it is. We were quickly served their signature kimchis and barley rice. The kimchi, particularly the yeolmu (young summer radish) kimchi, has a unique flavor profile well suited to their food. We ordered 2 bowls of their plain kalgooksu, 1 bibim milmyun, and 1 tteokbokki. The food came out fairly quickly. The kalgooksu was as expected the star of the show. The anchovy broth brings a savory complexity that seems impossible for a soup made from just dried fish and a few other ingredients. It even has a rich, almost thick, quality to it that is surprising for a fish broth. Their noodles, the titular kalgooksu, have the signature irregularity and chew of knife cut noodles. I appreciate the vegetables that always come in kalgooksu, like potato, pumpkin, and zucchini, which offer an earthy heartiness to the light soup. My only complaint is that the potato is in huge irregular chunks, and is barely cooked, though I feel like I have had this issue with many of the kalgooksu bowls I've had over the years. The bibim milmyun was solid. I think that I prefer the texture and flavor of naengmyeon buckwheat noodles, but the milmyun, which are made with mostly wheat flour, still provide a satisfying chew. The sauce tasted bright and fresh, especially with a splash of added vinegar. It also came with a small side portion of spicy pork and some rice paper to wrap. The tteokbokki was the one let down of the meal. To be fair, I wasn't expecting much out of tteokbokki at all restaurant like this whose specialty is essentially the opposite. I ordered the tteokbokki as a "safe pick" for a picky eater in the group. It turned out to be a bit mediocre in our opinion, and that friend ended up enjoying their kalgooksu anyways. If you're looking to try this dish, it's definitely one of if not the best I've had in Southern California, so I'd totally recommend it. I'll also warn to steer clear of the Garden Grove restaurant of the same name and specialty. I think it's a disappointing mimicry of this place.

It's been sitting on my saved list for a while, and honestly, this turned out to be the perfect opportunity. The space itself is bright, clean, and welcoming with warm woody tones throughout. Casual setup where you order at the counter and they bring the food out to you. I had already looked through the menu beforehand, so the real challenge was narrowing down what to order for one person. I failed at that... and I'm very happy I did. Started with the Pig Ear Salad 滷豬耳朵. Braised thin sliced pig ears dressed with soy sauce, chili oil, sesame oil, scallion, and cilantro. OMG. So good. Tender, flavorful, perfectly braised, with that satisfying chewy texture done right. Also got the Fried Peanut Salad 五味花生 with garlic, cilantro, scallions, vinegar, and Thai chili. Super crunchy, bright, refreshing, and honestly addicting. I added a cup of the Hot & Sour Soup 酸辣湯 too. Organic tofu, beech mushroom, carrot, bamboo, woodear mushroom, and egg. Super comforting with a really balanced tang and peppery heat. Not overly thick or heavy like a lot of Americanized versions can be. Exactly the kind of soup you want during a long travel day. For noodles, I ordered the Dan Dan Noodles 擔擔麵. Sesame-peanut sauce, cucumber, cilantro, crushed peanuts. Delicious on its own already, but I ended up adding some of the fried peanuts from the salad into the noodles and it became even better. Then the Three Cup Chicken 三杯雞 with sesame oil, soy sauce, rice wine, and Thai basil. I do wish it had a little more wok hei, but overall the flavor was still really comforting and savory. Extremely good with rice. Had a glass of Gewürztraminer alongside everything, which paired surprisingly well with the spice and aromatics. Their wine list leans more organic / natural wine focused, which felt very LA in a good way. Ended up sitting at a high top next to one of the managers and had a great conversation throughout the meal. She ended up hooking me up with the Traditional Shaved Ice 傳統刨冰 with grass jelly, red bean, boba, sweet potato balls, taro balls, brown sugar syrup, and condensed milk. I was already planning to order it anyway, and wow... I finished the entire thing. The brown sugar syrup was incredibly fragrant. One downside for me personally, I ended up with a pretty bad stomach ache afterwards likely because I'm lactose intolerant and many of the dishes are dairy-heavy, so that's something to keep in mind if you're sensitive to that. Overall, big portions and bold flavors, but service and dietary considerations might make or break the experience depending on what you're looking for.
