Baby Back Ribs with Mac & Cheese and Sweet Potato Fries - April 2026
Diana G.

I've been to The Pit a couple of times over the years and I've always had a good experience! The ambiance and service is always on point. The Baby Back Ribs were amazing and the meat literally fell off the bone. I enjoyed them with the vinegar based barbecue sauce. The Mac & cheese and sweet potato fries were also delicious. I ordered a draft beer and the glass was filled to the brim, I appreciated the heavy pour!

Biscuits and Hush Puppies with whipped butter - these were served hot and it was good. The hush puppies taste like Jamaica's festival

Was recommended this place by someone who used to live in the area. Good experience but nothing over the top. My husband and I split everything. Got the Double Combo of the Fried Chicken and Carolina Ribs with sweet potato fries and brussels as well as a serving of fried okra. They brought out biscuits and hush puppies (i think that their name). We liked everything but wished the Double Combo plate came out hot, it was closer to the warm/colder side. Everything else came out hot. Note: The brussels have pork in it and in a sweet sauce, not savoury. Service was fine, ambience was nice outside as it was a nice sunny day in the 70s.

Nothing in this restaurant tasted the way it should with the exception of the hush puppies & biscuits. Things tasted over fried, reheated, bland, and just overall poor quality. The deviled eggs have a sweet, almost cinnamon flavor that is quite strange. The soul rolls definitely were definitely reheated and the wings were fried so hard they were burnt in places. Fried chicken boasted to be the best in the area and while the breading was light, it also lacked any flavor. Bland is not a big enough descriptor for it. For the BBQ, if you have to bury it in sauce that is always a red flag in my opinion as it generally singles a lack of flavor in the meat. That was the case here for sure. Also, if you are going to do sliced brisket, you need to know how to cut it! Cutting with the grain is a big no no and absolutely impacted the flavor. Overall, food was extremely lackluster and disappointing. The ambiance was also a disappointment as we were sat back by a very noisy kitchen unnecessarily. The one good point was our server. He was friendly and the right amount of attentive. He did well. We are just traveling through so won't be back but definitely won't be recommending it either.

Double Combo with Chopped BBQ, Beef Brisket, Mac and cheese, and cabbage collards.

Went on a Sunday afternoon, not very busy, it was clean, they def had the heat going. It was a little too warm for my preference but to each their own. Ordered the combo plate, 2 meats and 2 sides. I got the chopped bbq, was pretty good. The brisket is sliced brisket. I got a pretty fatty piece with very little meat but the flavor was still good. I did not like the Mac and cheese. It was dry, I like my Mac and cheese creamy and stringy. My other side was cabbage collards. I hasn't heard of it before. I ordered cabbage thinking it was cabbage but the when it came out, it looked like collards and tasted like collards. Those were good tho! Fried green tomatoes really stole the show. I think out of all of our food I could have just ordered that as my meal with their hush puppies and biscuits and been just as happy. Overall, nice place for Sunday lunch. Across the street was a cool chocolate factory too!

I was apart of a party of 32 and reservations were made in advance. They served complimentary biscuits and hush puppies. Dry. I ordered shrimp skewers, mac and cheese, collard greens and deviled eggs. Deviled eggs were plain. Re-Do the entire recipe. Shrimp skewers were delicious. Mac and Cheese and Collard greens will be the reason I come back. Good portions. Chicken Tenders and Fries. Unseasoned. Overall, located in a great spot of Raleigh, near the Amtrak. Good customer service.

I was excited to try some authentic barbecue while visiting Raleigh on a work trip. Service was outstanding from the moment you walked in through the entire meal. I was very excited after our appetizers came everything was amazing, We ordered the pit sampler, everything on that plate was amazing but the smoked chicken wings stole the show. Don't skip the cornbread. It was on the sweeter side but so divine. Then a huge plate of biscuits and bus puppies landed on the table before our mains came out. We should have stopped there...Was a bit disappointed by the smoked turkey, sweet potato fries, and Brussels sprouts. Turkey bbq was a bit dry and tough, Brussels were overcooked and soggy, sweet potato fries were coated in sugar...

I was traveling through and someone in our group wanted to get some bbq and suggested the Pit. We walked there and I was really surprised. This was a very pleasant upscale bbq restaurant. First off, our server was fantastic! The best service that we had the entire time we were in town. The restaurant was clean and had a warm and welcoming atmosphere. There were people lined up to get in. Our server made excellent suggestions and brought us complementary biscuits and hush puppies to start us off. I ordered the brisket which was flavorful but a little stringy and the chopped whole hog which was covered in their vinegar sauce. All of it was very good. I'm still thinking about the okra. I'm not sure when I'll be back in Raleigh but I would recommend checking out and trying this place to anyone who is in the downtown area. Thank you for the great and welcoming experience!

This place was good! Service was kind of slow but the bbq was good! Got pulled pork and some sweet potato fries. We went once with my fiancé and once with my grandparents before. This was a very cute experience and we enjoyed it. Would come back again.

Best bbq around. Beef, pork and chicken. Sides are really good too. Service was the best. Nice bar area and plenty of of tables in a great atmosphere.

Always a must when in town! From family style dining to grab & go...The Pit never fails my me or my taste buds! The hushpuppies will leave a lasting impression! Elijah took great care of us! Definitely will be back for a road order!

Very delicious NC BBQ! The baby back ribs were so tender and delicious! Had pulled pork too and it was tender and flavorful! The baked beans were tasty and the friend okra was crispy and good too! Had sweet tea and banana pudding for dessert but of course I had to take a lot of it to go! Generous portions! Loved it! My server Reecia was wonderful and attentive! Great service!

This downtown bar and restaurant…read morefeels less like a room and more like a warm afternoon--light spills through oversized windows, stretching across honeyed wood floors and catching on glints of brass and gold like little sparks of celebration. The patio blurs the boundary between inside and out, inviting breezes, laughter, and the occasional curious passerby to join the scene. Inside, it's a playful clash of textures and tones--lush greenery tumbling from shelves, vibrant colors dancing against natural wood, and polished metals winking from every corner. It's the kind of place where a cocktail feels brighter, conversations linger longer, and even the sunlight seems to stay for just one more round. From the moment you step in, the welcome feels less like service and more like being let in on a good secret. The staff greet you with easy smiles and a kind of genuine curiosity--like they're actually glad you chose this spot, today. There's no script, no stiffness--just a natural warmth that settles in as quickly as the sunlight. Behind the bar, the bartenders move with quiet confidence and a touch of showmanship. They know their craft, but they don't flaunt it--they share it. Ask for a classic, and it arrives perfectly balanced; ask for something new, and they'll read your mood like a seasoned mind-reader. The deviled eggs arrive perfectly plump, sunshine-yellow centers whipped into a silky, indulgent cloud and topped generously with the red peppers that bring just the right whisper of fresh garden drama, they're rich without being heavy, playful without trying too hard--the kind of bite that makes you pause mid-conversation, raise an eyebrow, and make you want to slowly work through the next one. They only come in odd numbers, sharing isn't caring on these. The BBQ hot honey pork ribs show up like they own the place--sticky, glistening, and just a little bit dangerous. The meat barely clings to the bone, surrendering at the slightest nudge, impossibly tender yet somehow still juicy, with those caramelized, crispy edges that feel like the best kind of rebellion. Sweet heat from the honey lingers just long enough to keep you coming back, fingers unapologetically messy and completely worth it. And then there's the mac & cheese--rich, velvety, and indulgent in a way that feels almost mischievous. Each spoonful stretches and melts like it's putting on a show, wrapping you in buttery comfort while quietly stealing the spotlight. Together, it's a plate that doesn't ask for your attention--it demands it, and you'll be more than happy to oblige. Cheers!

We showed up early with our 1.5 year old daughter and they were able to seat us immediately. The area felt spacious, although that could be due to the fact that it wasn't super packed inside. I ordered the short rib benedict, my husband got the chicken & waffle sandwich, and we ordered my daughter a side of the mac & cheese. What a delicious meal! The short rib was tender and flavorful, and sat on top of a biscuit (what's not to love here?!) - horseradish hollandaise was the perfect touch as the horseradish pairs nicely with the beef. The chicken & waffle sandwich was the best guilty pleasure! Waffle crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside, chicken breaded and fried with a nice crunch, and a nice hot honey syrup to go alongside -- wish this had a little more heat. To our surprise, the mac & cheese side was a highlight too! It's hard to get a good mac n cheese, but this had such a rich, white cheese, slight funk flavor - delicious. Brunch at Parkside is delicious. Looking forward to trying dinner here soon.

We came in today with reasonable expectations after finding the restaurant online and seeing mostly positive reviews. We ordered several items to share as a family: broccoli cheddar soup, a French dip sandwich with green beans, and poutine fries. Unfortunately, the broccoli cheddar soup was very bland and lacked seasoning. We had a few bites and ended up leaving the rest. The French dip was the standout of the meal. While the meat itself was a bit dry, dipping it in the au jus made it the most enjoyable and edible item we ordered. The poutine fries were disappointing. They were very basic and didn't resemble what I would expect from poutine--more like prepackaged frozen fries that had been deep-fried. We didn't finish them and left most behind, though we still paid for them. Our child wouldn't eat any of the food, so we ordered the fried ravioli appetizer, hoping it would be similar to versions we've had elsewhere. Sadly, that was another letdown. Although we were told there was no breading, the texture suggested otherwise. This was the one item we did send back. I wouldn't recommend this location for anyone with food allergies or sensitivities, as much of the food appears to be made from frozen or prepackaged items. That said, our server was absolutely wonderful--the highlight of the visit. She was kind, attentive, kept our drinks refilled, and genuinely made us feel welcome. Her sweet demeanor and constant smile were honestly the reason we didn't complain more at the time. While I wouldn't return for the food, I might consider stopping by again strictly for drinks during a sporting event. Otherwise, this just wasn't the dining experience we were hoping for.

Seriously, if you can't find a pour you like here, you may just need water instead. Started with the biscuits topped with crackling and house-made preserves, and honestly, that combo alone made me question why I don't eat more biscuits in life. Sweet, salty, buttery chaos in the best way. For the main, I went with the pork chop and greens. The chop leaned a little overcooked for me personally, but the sauce helped bring things back together and added good flavor. The greens had a nice little kick of heat, but I kept waiting for that deep smoky ham hock flavor to show up like an old Southern grandma entering the kitchen... and it never quite arrived. Overall though? Still a solid meal, strong whiskey program, cool atmosphere, and definitely worth checking out if you're in Raleigh looking for a bourbon-forward dinner spot. I was thrilled that most of the menu was available. They were just out of the banana pudding. So I got to try the pecan wings I read about with the white sauce. It was so good. Then I got the chicken pot pie and biscuits. The pot pie had old biscuits for the topping, but the creamy mixture with large chunks of chicken was delicious. My biscuits came with honey and were served warm. I left with a slice of the chocolate-caramel-coconut cake, a side salad without onions, and a fried boneless thigh. The salad was made correctly, and the dressing was included. The salad was full of veggies, and the cake was rich and moist. Service was friendly and as soon as I finished my iced tea, another appeared. My wings were brought out first and it was a while for the rest of the meal as the restaurant was full. But they didn't rush me at all. I actually liked the space between the dishes, as I might not have been able to eat it all otherwise. I couldn't finish both biscuits and was even provided a container for the honey. I am going to miss Beasley's, but I'm glad I got a positive experience to remember the restaurant.
