We came to this former mortuary fashioned into a beer hall/ gastropub strictly for the suds... and had no idea it was where Bruce Lee's funeral service was held! A super legit spot... from the outside, the domineering white colonial-style columns still stand at the entrance. The inside is somewhat Gothic as they did reclaim pieces of the mortuary including the wooden pews! A fantastic beer offering -- full pours as well as half pours are fair game. For bites, they have mostly pizza, but appear to have a special for every day of the week. On a Monday night, they had like whiskey shots or something... wild! In general, the atmosphere was pretty cray cray. The music rotated between dub step and scream-o, so probably on the louder side inside. My coworkers and I went there for Happy Hour and loved it. The atmosphere is really cool--and they have extra space out back for larger crowds. The staff was very friendly and attentive, offering beer recommendations and samples to help us decide. The food and cocktails were loved by all as well. And that rings especially true for the giant chocolate chip cookie and bread pudding. They've got their desserts down to a science. Personally, I had the burger and thought it was delicious. I visited Seattle for a few days and found this gem on our first night! My friends and I all enjoyed drinks-- I had a margarita and a few on tap beers and LOVED everything! My friends all loved their drinks as well. We ordered food off the QR code (a little odd but it worked!) and also enjoyed our food. We tried some pizza and sandwiches and loved it all! The only thing I would say I didn't like was that I definitely felt like a "tourist" in that the staff was very short with us, but the atmosphere and uniqueness about the history of the building was amazing. Went there with friends. Service was horrible, rude waitress, who tried to prove us something about whiskey, that "we don't understand anything and she's king of kings". BUT! Its not the end of sad story. We ordered some cocktail made of gin, it looked horrible, taste horrible and!!! This place has a coffin as their logo because the building used to be a mortuary. I'm usually a scardy cat about these things but I frequented this place a few times before I found out... And now it doesn't bother me... Until I go to the restroom alone. Then I might feel a little bit scared. Still, I always bring my beer loving friends here. There are so many choices on tap and some alcohol percentages go up to 12%. For non drinkers, the food here is good! I like to order the variety hummus and grilled pita bread which is amazing. We were looking for a place off Melrose that would be able to comfortably seat a group of 9, so we headed over to The Pine Box. The space used to be a renovated funeral home, apparently where Bruce Lee's funeral took place, so that was a bit of interesting history. We were seated in the "outdoor" garden area, which was great, and we all sat pretty comfortably. I was a fan of the pretty unique and varied beer offerings they had. I had the Freigeist Abraxxxas, which was pretty tart, slightly smokey, and a fairly enjoyable beer to drink over a long period of time. There were plenty of other microbrews to try, but since it was reaching the end of the night, and I had a flight to catch 4 hours later, I opted to limit to one beer. Oy, I need to be less responsible. Wasn't able to try the food, but the pizza seems to be a big hit amongst my friends, as well as the group of Yelp reviewers. Service was friendly and attentive, and gave some decent recommendations for what beers/drinks to get. They offered to do separate checks automatically, which was really great, and it made everything just so much easier. Prices were decent for a lot of the microbrews, especially since it wasn't like they were offering Bud Light for $8. I typically shy away from taprooms and steer myself to breweries, but I was jonesin' for a beer, and being that we were staying downtown, wanted something easily in walking distance. The Pine Box was recommended by someone at our hotel, and I'm glad I listened to him. Lots of local beers on tap (and also from OR, CA, CO, NV, and England), with some food offerings. The pizza was really good -- better than typical bar grub, so nothing like an afterthought. They actually do pizza quite well here. Make your own or choose from 10+ pizzas on the menu. The bartender was super friendly in helping my husband choose a cider (he's not a beer guy), and is one reason I love sitting at the bar -- personal service. All the Seattle locals we asked seemed to point us to the Pine Box, so we had to try it! Definitely the place to be if you're a beer lover! I'm not a huge drinker myself, but my boyfriend was in love with the drink selection here! They had a ton of Firestone beers on the menu, so he couldn't contain his excitement. The bartenders were all very nice and super knowledgeable about each drink. For an appetizer, we shared the house-made pretzel spicy Hefeweizen mustard. Decently made pretzel and the mustard had that nice wasabi kick to it! I couldn't really pick up on the Hefeweizen aspect of it, but it was still good! For late lunch, we ordered two pizzas. 1) the capicola, duck egg, & arugula pizza. 2) the jalapeno creme & bacon pizza. The duck egg pizza was my favorite. I've never thought about adding an egg on a pizza before. The jalapeno pizza had a creeping spicy to it. Once you stopped eating, then the heat started to kick in! Not the best pizzas I've ever had in my life, but not too bad either! I think we went a little early than the usual bar crowd, so the place was pretty empty when we were there. In the main room not as much. If you go upstairs there is where some people would sit during a funeral and you can view the main room easily. We went here as a celebration for several birthdays for Steve and a friend's. The food is pretty good! I got a cheeseburger and fries. Steve got a Mac and Cheese which was tasty! They have an impressive beer tap list which carried some solid brands! I would go back but it is a little hard to go here with a bunch of people. Beer and popcorn!!! What more can you ask for?!?!?! I like to sit at the bar so I can see the tap handles and read the always updated tv screen of beers, which lists brewery, ABV, volume of pour, and price. This is useful information that you don't always get to peruse before you order! The variety of beer is fantastic, and there are always a couple of rarer beers that are hard to find on tap. A plus is the randall that is always going and always changing. A randall is a container of spices/fruits/chiles/etc. that the beer filters through during a pour and that flavors the beer. It's a flavor combination that you'll likely never get again, so this is a must try. My favorite bar snack during happy hour is the smoked salt and porcini mushroom popcorn. It's salty and rich, and works oh so well with a pint of beer. Another good choice is the pretzel with spicy mustard - your mouth will burn in a good way! If I were a beer drinker, I'd be peeing myself in excitement over Pine Box's existence. However, I'm gluten-free (so what the hell are you doing reviewing a beer bar?! one might ask) so my experience is influenced by that factor. AKA What a Gluten-Intolerant Person Does in Seattle's Coolest New Beer Haven. Well, for one, she drinks cider. On that front, I was disappointed. I know, I know, Pine Box is all about the beer - but 33 taps and only one cider? Bars/restaurants with less options have more cider variety. Tieton was on the menu (which I love) but evidently they were out of the Tieton and replaced it with Julian (never heard of it) which I was not impressed with. The color was extremely light, like a pale ginger ale, and it was nearly flavorless. Refreshing in the way that drinking a Sprite on a hot day is refreshing, but I wanted a cider, not a Sprite. I did order a Bloody Mary after that (because why the hell not) and that went better. Nothing terribly special about it, but a good solid Bloody. I ordered the spicy shrimp and cheesy grits, which were also really solid. The shrimp are head-on, so if you're bothered by your food looking at you, be aware (I made the boy peel mine). The portion was just the right size to fill me up, no leftovers nor did I leave hungry. I can't recall exactly what the boy had (mac and cheese, maybe?) but it had duck confit, and it was tasty. The service was great, once we got service. It's not evident what the situation is when you walk in - the bar is three-deep and there's no greeter or host, nor is there a sign that tells you whether you're supposed to seat yourself or wait for someone to seat you. Pro-tip: you are supposed to seat yourself. I don't know if it was just an off day, but there didn't seem to be sufficient service staff for the amount of people in the place. It was packed, but there were only 2 bartenders and 2 servers on duty. They do have a great beer garden, although it's covered. When we were there, they were doing a luau-style pig roast and a band was playing in the beer garden. Despite any shortcomings, Pine Box is definitely shaping up to be a solid neighborhood bar. read more

The bartenders were attentive enough, but not very friendly or engaging. We also ordered the nachos ($13) and the Mac and cheese ($12) and added kimchi ($2). The nachos were HUGE!
