"Seattle's hottest club is: Thank You! Located inside a crashing blimp, this Eurotrash utopia is the creation of beatnik doctor Soul Patch Adams. This place has everything: Zip lines, fish food, that fat Hawaiian guy that no one invited, an old Pakistani woman that looks like a California Raisin. Bonus: This weekend, they're having a tournament of everybody's favorite trivia game, "Shaun White or Bonnie Raitt?" Look closely -- the answer may surprise you" Pinebox screams of a real life version of one of SNL Stefan's hottest night clubs where you would expect to meet some random person like Charles P Thompson the dancing flamingo. An old mortuary turned bar, pews intact on the second floor? Sign me the heck up! The name is also a fun double entendre - it's on Pine street and it's also a type of casket! **They require COVID-19 vax and id as proof**. annoying. I love the space, it makes for a unique dining/drinking environment. The upstairs tables are cozy, kind of like an English public house. The Pizzas are great, thin and oven fired crispy - the other food is average. The place is quite loud (music speakers and echoes). The staff are ok but not particularly warm/friendly. This menu/ordering is all via your phone and its time consuming to enter all your data (not very personal), A few changes and this place would be pretty solid. read more

Really enjoy the ambiance in the Pine Box! There are still a lot of elements from the church and mortuary that are still present. The drinks are really good. I personally wouldn't get the pizza - a bit lacking in flavor - although I don't think the food is generally the main appeal of Pine Box. Would recommend for the drinks and ambiance! read more

You can't really lose by putting a bar inside a defunct mortuary. Who doesn't want to get drunk in a place like that? Expansive beer menu. Spacious and comfortable. I really want to love this place since the location is decent and the architecture and history of the building is really interesting. I go about twice a year, mostly during the fall since they have a good selection of beers. Their beer selection is why I return every so often, although every time I visit I swear I'll never return since the service is almost always lacking. Year after year, I experience rude bartenders/servers which is strange since they're almost always different every time I visit. I imagine one of the interview questions is: "Do you hate people?" and those who answer yes are hired on the spot. I've had the food before and it wasn't great. The pizza is okay and the pretzels are decent but without cheese to serve it with I've stopped ordering it. Now I just need to remind myself each year that no matter how cool this place looks, to have very low expectations for how the staff will treat their customers. read more

Ok ok ok ok. Confession time. This place used to be this night club that I did NOT eat in, that's for sure. When Covid hit we wanted to take the time to try as many businesses still open to support. We found this spot and I was like wait they have food now? So we ordered pretty much everything off their menu minus pizzas. The hot pockets are the fucking best. Like I mean. The. Best. There is absolutely nothing and I mean nothing like them. They cut them in half and the cheese goodness and whatever filling is worth it. The pretzels are perfectly crispy on the outside. Mustards are balanced and perfect. The giant ass cookie should come with milk or some ice cream because it is a dense ass food item for sure. We had almond milk with them to soften them up! So good. The chips are great with their salsa. The jerk chicken tacos are SOOO flavorful. Over all, it's a decent meal. Great service. Be patient, we ordered on a Sunday and they only had one person cooking so don't expect this instant production line from them. They did awesome!!! read more

We were visiting from out of town and a close friend recommended this place. Paul and Jake were so welcoming and made sure that we had an enjoyable experience. The pizza and drinks were phenomenal. They had a wide selection of craft beers. The ambience speaks for itself, but what really stood up was how friendly everyone there was. I highly recommended. This is a Seattle bar that everyone should come to. read more

Good selection of drinks and I like the option of the outdoor seating. Celebrated a friends birthday there and had a blast.

A good craft beer tap list is going to win me over every time when looking for lunch. The Pine Box delivered on that, and they had five or six beers from Future Primitive (it's a brewery in White Center, and I'd argue one of the best in Seattle. That's a story for another time, but if you've never been there, you should go...like today...like after you read this review...unless it's the middle of the night, then you should probably just get some sleep). Back to The Pine Box, for which this review is being written. The food menu on hand has more options than what the website lists. The only thing that I was surprised with is that the only chicken option was pizza. They have a couple taco and sandwich options, but no chicken tacos and no chicken sandwiches. Luckily, however, it have no effect on me because I had my heart set on a pulled pork sandwich. And just to be clear, they have a pulled pork sandwich (at least as of today) and I ordered it and it was tasty. But it is tossed in BBQ sauce, so if you don't like your pulled pork covered in sauce, you might not want to order it. Oh, also the spicy slaw, served on the side, added nice kick to the sandwich. -FIN- read more

Great atmosphere, good people and good pizza. What more could you ask for?! My friends and I got here around 6pm and it wasn't too busy or packed so we got seated promptly and put in our order using the QR codes! Went to The Pine Box with a friend late at night for a drink. The place closes at 2am and by 1:30 they were blasting heavy metal and literally telling people to leave. The inside of this place is so cool! My boyfriend and I just popped into this place on a weeknight and sat in the upstairs area. The whole building has this cool, churchy vibe (I think the building used to be a mortuary). The beer was pretty good, the food was genuinely terrible. So come here for drinks and hanging out, but not for a satisfying dinner. The bartender that helped us was really friendly. I came here on a Saturday night for dinner with friends and it was awesome! Former mortuary with tall ceilings. Patio. Strong selection of beers and well drinks. Delicious food. No TVs. We ordered pizza, BBQ pulled pork mac n' cheese, hummus plate, and salad. The pizza was especially delicious, perfectly cooked- thin crust, but not burnt; the hummus plate was great as well - served with fresh, thick pita bread, feta, and veggies. They have a great selection of beers on tap, and service was outstanding! Our server was very friendly and prompt. My drink order was accidentally messed up, but my server worked quickly to get it corrected - I appreciate that type of effort! Tip: Get a spot upstairs, close to the banister if you can - it offers a great view of the entire restaurant, perfect for people watching. read more

Good selection of beer/ale on tap Average pub fare. Excellent service. Fun ambiance. We two stopped in for beers and lunch on a Sunday afternoon. BEER: 4.5. Many local beers on tap. Best of all, it include a choice of two German beers on tap: a Veltins pilsner and an Aldersbacher Dunkel. Both good, with the Dunkel being especially pleasant and non-hoppy. FOOD: 3.0. - 3.0: Vegetable tacos - 3.5: Roasted red pepper hummus - 2.0: Bavarian Bratwurst. AMBIANCE: 4.0. Former funeral home, including for Bruce Lee. Outside heated patio available. Balcony available. 3 clean bathrooms (1 for men, and 2 unisex). Horror movies playing weekly in October (2019) leading up to Halloween. SERVICE: 5.0. Michael was wonderful. Stopped here yesterday with a couple co workers after an event set up. Luckily we were just in time for happy hour. I ordered the Golden Urn, I LOVE mezcal! It was a well crafted cocktail! With the happy hour pricing, it was $8. We ordered a couple small plates to share as a snack. We ordered the hummus and pretzel. The hummus had a slightly spicy flavor and was delicious. The pretzel was pretty standard but -warning- the sauce on the side has a very heavy horseradish taste. It was so overpowering. I only tasted a small bit of it and was so taken aback that I was coughing for a few minutes. Overall the visit was good. The service was good and the ambiance was casual. read more

I loved this place! My girlfriend and I came to Seattle at the beginning of the month and when I was researching fun bars/restaurants to go to, this one seemed perfect. She's a student at mortuary school so I knew she would think it was a cool spot and it totally was. They had a great beer selection and the food was awesome! We got the Nachos 2 Die 4 and the Cheesy Garlic Flatbread (which I have been thinking about since we left) and both were awesome. Plus it didn't take very long to come out. Their QR codes for ordering at the table weren't working but that was no biggie, you just had to go up to the bar to order things. We sat outside on their patio, which is also partially covered so you're both outside and also protected if it rains. Thankfully we had a beautiful Seattle day. I highly recommend it because it was such an awesome spot. read more

What a great beer hall that has been around for years! From the outside you don't expect much of pine box until you take a step through their doors and in some ways feel transported to a different place. Super cool bar with a really awesome vibe. In case this is the first review of The Pine Box you're reading, the building was an old mortuary where Bruce Lee's funeral was held. Among those in attendance were Steve McQueen and all around legend Chuck Norris. The only thing I wish is that they would have stayed a bit more true to their roots and kept more of a funeral vibe. If you didn't know its history you could totally miss the fact of what the place once was. With the exception of a few small historical photos and a paper cut out of Bruce Lee you'd probably not know unless someone told you. Really cool place that I will be sure to visit next time I'm around. read more

What do you get when you combine an old funeral home and mausoleum with good beer? You get the Pine Box - naturally! We found this spot a couple of years ago doing a Yelp search for "beer" in Seattle. And now it's a regular stop on our trips to the area. Inside it's small, dark, and definitely retains the feel of its pre-bar purpose. But the 'Box also maintains one of the best tap lists in town, and offers full bar service if you're not in the mood for a beer. Food-wise I've only been here for happy hour, but it was delicious and the prices were good too (although their prices do already skew a little high - pretty typical for the big city though). The service is always friendly, though, and I love a place where I'm treated like a regular even though I'm only in there a few times a year! Parking is the usual Capital Hill nightmare. Take an Uber, or keep circling the block until you get lucky! There's also a pay lot next door - but why ruin the fun? read more

Great atmosphere ! Good service ! A friend booked a small party. Pierre manager was very helpful

May I have a good beer, please? I haven't sampled many of the beer options from the list at the Pine Box because I keep ordering the same one, but... I really like the Maisels Weisse and I already know they have other interesting options, so I don't really "need" to branch out. A friend recently celebrated his birthday here, and I sampled his very interesting sour beer. It wasn't a beer I could drink a whole glass of, but it was pretty enjoyable and really good to try. Wonder if they have beer samplers... I haven't experimented with their food menu much, but I've had their hanger steak & arugula salad and sampled the pizza with mussels before. Not a big fan of shells on my pizza, but it looked pretty cool and I remember it being pretty good. The hanger steak salad is amazing some days and not-so-good others. The first time I ordered it, the salad was wonderful and the Walla Walla onion had a very distinct and wonderful texture/flavor. When I ordered it again months later, the salad was kind of dry and not amazing. Guess it just depends on the day! Answer to my question: Yes, because it's easy to find a good beer at The Pine Box. read more

If you ask many of my friends about me and Seattle, you won't hear nice things. No, it's not that I could never make it "the big city". It's just that often Seattle is just not "chill" enough for me. I just can't stomach bumper-to-bumper traffic. I don't like going to places to be seen. I don't like driving around forever looking for a place to Parallel Park. I don't like pretending a smaller NW city to the south doesn't have better public transportation. Dude, I just want to chill. This is a place where you can chill. First of all: the building. My goodness the building. I've never seen a beer bar quite like it. I initially didn't know what it used to be. A converted courthouse? A church? After talking to some folks in-the-know, turns out it used to be a funeral home. And BRUCE LEE's funeral was here. Cool. Anyway. I love the ambiance. Great beers on tap, bartenders that you could actually see yourself becoming friends with, and a general laid-back feel. Tap selection is also pretty damn good. I was quite surprised to see a solid 8 taps dedicated to Midnight Sun (I recently moved to Anchorage). Lots of other great, hand-selected stuff from throughout the NW as well. I've heard the food is pretty good but the kitchen closes at 11 so I didn't get to try it. Will definitely be coming back the next time I'm in Seattle. read more

I love this place. Probably my favorite beer bar in Seattle. I just wish parking is a bit easier and cheaper. They always have something I want to try on tap and I am a bit of a snob when it comes to beer. I used to work about a mile from this place and came here more often. Now Collins Pub is near me which is cool too but it's just not... The Pine Box. This place used to be a funeral home and you could definitely tell that once you come in. It feels like you are at a church drinking beer. Their anniversary beers (all 3 of them + variants) are all delicious. As mentioned, they always have something interesting on tap - local and/or rare beer. In terms of food, I have tried their Warm Big Ass Chocolate Chunk Cookie and popcorn. Popcorn was delicious but the cookie was just okay. It was big though and it was only 4 bucks during HH. I hear great things about their real lunch/dinner menu, but I haven't any yet tried! Shame on me. I will revisit and try soon. There are lots of other cool places near by. It's in the heart of Capitol Hill. I usually come when they open at 3pm, grab a few beers, and walk around the area to sober up before driving back home. Major credit cards are accepted! read more

Cool pizza bar in a renovated mortuary! Extensive list of local brews (and some imports) on tap, enough to satisfy the hardcore beer buff, but accessible to the novice too. And of course the pizza was excellent!! Went with the Mama's lil' Pep. Pies are 12" so if you're alone come hungry. We happened to come during Happy Hour, so we ordered a couple starters to help fill the three of us. Have to say we were very satisfied with our visit! Our server, Michael, offered good suggestions and awesome service. Making this a staple stop whenever I'm in the area. read more

This bar is located in a really unusual place, an old mortuary. It is also unusual because you have to walk up a set of steps (with no indication anything is going on inside). Then the rock music may not be of interest to everybody. Fortunately, they have a great list of beers and make really super thin crust pizza. They have a range of beers on tap, including many local ones and some unusual. I started with a dark Saison beer. I had not ever tried something like this before, but really liked. I was particularly impressed by the pizza. They have some standard choices, but I went for a custom one with fennel sausage, peppers, mushrooms and onions. I loved it. The crust is then and was cooked just crisp enough. They have a really solid base with a good sauce and a generous amount of cheese. Then the toppings were fresh and delicious, I particularly liked the sausage. read more

If you want some well crafted food and a great selection of drinks, this is your place to go! They sport a good happy hour every day of the week with options like a goat cheese dip with pita bread and BBQ sliders (both were fantastic and filling). I didn't order any other food items, but the pizzas and burgers that came out of the kitchen also looked delicious! If bar drinks aren't for you, their beer menu is also vast and is sure to please a variety of individuals. Service can be slow when the place gets busy, so don't come here if you are in a rush or need someone to wait on your every need. read more

Food fantastic, was served by bartender Paul, he was amazing. Truly a friendly face and very accommodating. 10/10 recommend!

First time in Seattle and my friends and I went to The Pine Box and had the worst customer service by the night manager who said her name was Rose and the server named Alicia H. My friend was treated poorly because of a pizza order that went wrong and could have easily been fixed. When I went up and asked for her name and asked who the owners are she laughed and said a report was made which is ridiculous since they were the ones who were rude. I am not sure what I was expecting when I stepped in here. I suppose I was wanting to see more of the "creepiness" of being a former funeral parlor or even more of the church architecture. The only creeps you get are from the people in the place! I say this jokingly, but also not... We walked in and could not find anyone to seat us... Which I guess is fine here - It seems like a lot of Seattle does this. This isn't a problem if you're not caught having to wander around the bar looking for an open spot and then get your head chewed off by waitstaff for being in the way. Only the front part of the place has some remnants of the "church" and it was kind of cool - The pews had been upcycled into booth seating. I think they might do shows in the above balcony area? It just looked like it was cluttered with junk - But one side actually had some seating - It looked like folks were getting seated up there. The beer selection was pretty decent, but the spot we found to park ourselves was also not conducive to having a beer (there's an "island" in the middle of the way behind the people seated at the bar) so basically we grabbed one drink and left thereafter. Plus, the bartender was also not particularly pleasant to deal with either. With only a short time to hang out in Seattle, I would skip this place. read more

From the moment I walked in all I could think was "mehhhh." The service was meh. Took ten minutes before anyone came to give us menus, and another 12 before they came back to take our orders. I wandered aimlessly looking for someone to ask for menus and several servers, bartenders, and waitresses walked past me without a second glance. The food was meh. Expensive for tiny portions. My friends and I were looking for a dinner spot on a Monday night so we decided to come here. It was late, around 9:30/10 p.m., and there wasn't anyone else inside when we arrived. I ordered the Turtleship, a pizza topped with kimchi, pulled pork, and gochujang paste. I had pretty high expectations, as one of my friends had said that the food here was really good. Unfortunately, my pizza failed to meet those expectations. The pizza crust itself was crisp and able to hold up to the toppings, and it had some nice charring on it. However, the toppings were mediocre at best. The pulled pork lacked any smoky flavor that I'd expect from a pulled pork, and it was overcooked. The kimchi's spicy funkiness really was the only flavor note coming through, maybe a bit of saltiness from the pork if anything. However, the whole pizza lacked a sweetness to counteract the other flavors. Maybe the gochujang was a little old so that it lost its sweetness, but regardless, the pizza was unappetizing in my book. I personally don't drink, but I did see that they have a lot of selections on tap, and my friends took full advantage. They seemed to enjoy their drinks, so maybe that's the selling point here. The food is priced a little high in my opinion - I paid around $20 for my meal (with tip). The pizza itself was $15, and given how lackluster it was, it definitely wasn't worth it. Even so, I would think the pizza be $12 or $13 given the amount that you get. The location used to be a mortuary, and when we went, it certainly felt like one. The lighting was very dim, and the interior colors are very gloomy. Maybe it's different if you go during the day. Being in Cap Hill, street parking is abundant. Because of the time we went, street parking was free. I think it's free after 9 pm, just fyi. I'm sure I just had a one-off experience, and given the other reviews for this place, take my review with a grain of salt. read more

Anyone else remember when this was Chapel? The memory still comes to me everytime I step into The Pine Box, as they kept the chapel seating/booths and a cross to remind you of holier times. The place is much more bright and perky though, with a beer menu that any craft beer connoisseur would appreciate. That's primarily why this place still is coo with me. But, in my most recent visit where I ordered a Tequila Soda and the Bratwurst Plate (without the potatoes, but with extra kraut), I was disappointed. The Tequila-Soda was weak on the alcohol, so tasted like I was drinking just soda water. Yet what was more upsetting was the Bratwurst Plate with the most foul-tasting mustard I've ever tried. Although the bratwurst was fine and they provided extra kraut to substitute for the potato salad it normally comes with, I just could not get over the taste of the mustard they smear on the plate. It had a really, really sour, horseradish taste to it that as soon as I tasted some with my brat, I yelped...in a bad way about how awful it was to my friends. Fortunately, they do provide another mustard on the side, which was ground mustard, and tasted much better - but I still can't even forget about that mustard, which was smeared all over the plate. Note to self or all - do not get this plate or any plate with that mustard. Yikes. Despite the mishap with my food and cocktail, I do still enjoy coming to Pine Box where times before provided a much more fun and tasty experience! Especially for anyone who likes a variety of different craft beers from Washington - this place is one to check out. Or maybe just come to say you've drank in a funderal home. Whatever. read more
