As the name of this bar implies, there is a great irony in ending your yawn of a sexless relationship here. The drinks are less than HKD100, and apps are ONLY HKD20 with a drink purchase, so one can easily and cheaply drown his/her sorrows after being monked out of a relationship.
I had visited around 5pm on a weekday and there was still one of two four-person tables outside the bar available. There was plenty more seating available indoors. The Monk is situated perfectly across the street from the Dog and on the corner of two fairly busy thoroughfares - great for people watching (or being watched during your moment of angst). As the evening continued, more people arrived and the staff happily added a few more temporary tables.
This place is primarily a drinking hole, as far as I could tell. The food menu consisted of three entrees of the burger, nacho variety and then several HKD20 apps, and that's it.
I ordered an old-fashioned (HKD66-ish) which was more like a cocktail with the "essence of old-fashioned" as the drink was weak. However, the price was inexpensive compared to other bars. There is a fairly extensive list of cocktails available, as well as 4 or 5 choices for each the red/white category, champagne/prosecco and shots of hard liquor. My app - the chicken fingers - came in a small ramekin-type bowl, which housed 6 shriveled up, witch-like fingers. But for the price I can't complain and was grateful that the old fashioned was an essence and not the real thing, as the app barely hit any spot and a more powerful cocktail would have left me staggering out of the Monk and possibly into the arms of another monk. The app was accompanied by a smidgen of swampy-looking dipping sauce that didn't do much for the fingers either way.
The only turn off to this, as well as other bars in this area, is the service by the all-female staff. As a single woman, it's obvious that the men - particularly the foreign men - receive much chattier service and cajoling than I do. After waiting around for a number of minutes (and the bar was virtually empty), someone finally showed up with the menu And a number of minutes after that, took my order with indifference. She was the happiest when taking my money. Next time, I'll bring a monk with me. read more
