We just finished a summer hike and were starving. We stopped at the Nugget. From the outside it looks a little 'rustic' but damn, the food is awesome and what looks rustic is actually an amazing, eclectic array of outdoor seating areas. You can position you self in shade, sun or part of both. What ever you like. I had the Back Country Salad with a crab cake and my husband had the filet slider and the crab cake slider. Visited this place in late February and so happy it has arrived. There are so few night places up at the mountain this is one great addition. Staff was super friendly, food truck was super good and inexpensive, drinks were fabulous. Definitely a local place during certain hours without the local attitude. I was up in Purgatory for a few days, and decided to check this roadside bar out. I was not disappointed! They've done a nice job setting up a spacious patio, with some big shady tents. Both bartenders I met were extremely friendly, and mixed a great rum and coke. Good prices for a generous pour. I tried the food truck also, crab cake slider was delicious and ready super quickly! DRESS WARM. This should be obvious, but you'll need more than 2 layers. Such a fun little restaurant with great atmosphere and outdoorsy vibes! They played awesome music, not typical for restaurants. Waitress was a little snappy and stern at first. Could be from the cold, I don't blame her. But the bartender accidentally made an extra drink and she gave it to us for free. Super cool move. The spiked hot cider was awesome! Truffle fries were good but tasted a little... off? Not mushroomy off but like maybe the oil they use was off... no big deal. We still ate them all. We were welcomed right when we arrived and given seating options, direction on ordering from the food truck, drinks from waitress and social distancing. We sat near a fire pit which was lit for us. The view is breathtaking at any angle. An outside party sat across from my son and I to share the circular pit. Our lovely waitress was helpful, accommodating and not so rushed to engage in thoughtful conversation. The side salad and added crab cake was a perfect portion while sharing truffle fries. We booked the Nugget for a wedding rehearsal/welcome dinner in September. It was so much fun! The surroundings are scenic and stunning and the bar itself is rustic and cozy. Guests could gather by the fire pits outside or party inside. The new owners made it even more welcoming with flowers and lights, while Hana kept things moving and celebratory at the bar. Ok, so where to begin? First of all, how can the atmosphere get any better than sitting outside looking at the Hermosa cliffs? The service was AWESOME! Owner Kevin took time to chat with us and tell us how he came to open up this gem. While I'm not a beer drinker, the rest of my family is, so I was skeptical when I asked for a glass of wine and much to my pleasant surprise, they had it! Great day up at Purgatory! Hike 6 miles from Needles to Castle Rock. Huge appetite and The Nugget food truck was spot on with truffle fries and a BBQ Bacon Cheeseburger complete with grass fed beef. Outstanding food and service. Beers were cold and we ordered through the window so we could sit outside with our dog Oakley. I'll. Be back! A great new spot, the owners Kevin and Joe are great guys! Good drinks and shot specials, a FREE SHUTTLE to and from The Nugget (they will pick you up or drop you off), and there is a delicious food truck outside (get the pesto fries or the Bacon Breakfast burrito). Great place to come after visiting Purgatory resort. They also have a ton of TVs around, so a great place to watch some sports too! read more

We noticed the sign to the Nugget on the way to Purgatory and decided to stop in for a beer and sandwiches. A great decision! What a gem this place is. Completely unexpected. Owners Kevin and Joe converted an ancient cabin into a exceptionally cool bar and partnered with a superb gourmet food truck to provide a dining and pub-like experience in the high country .5 miles from Purgatory. Don't judge the place from the outside. They have managed to keep it rustic but with a modern and updated feel that is cozy and welcoming. We love this place! Bartender, chef and others were friendly, welcoming and devoted to great drink, food and customer service. What a complete surprise up here in the food desert of the Animas River Valley. Way more affordable that Sow's Ear restaurant down the road and School House pizza which is seriously lacking in comfortable places to sit. Outstanding choice of sliders, salads. As the chef noted, one slider is a snack two is dinner. I had the bacon cheeseburger (x2) slider and my wife had the fried green tomato Slider (1). Both were fantastic.
