One of two around Los Angeles. The other is down near LMU. I wouldn't really call it a diner, it's more of a traditional breakfast restaurant and can be a nice option, especially if some of the really popular ones have longer lines. This location in the valley has much easier parking and our server was very polite and friendly. Inside is also larger here and can host many different sized groups. It was very crowded when we stopped in for our Saturday brunch, but the tables turned pretty quickly. For this visit, I chose the Baja Benedict, which was a special which was basically an Eggs Benedict with avocado and pico de gallo on top. It was very good and eggs were cooked perfectly although I really wish they would have chorizo. We also ordered some of the strawberry Red Velvet pancakes and thought they were a great sweet treat. Overall, this is a nice option and I would recommend if you're searching for some breakfast. read more

Treated myself to a solo breakfast the other morning since I had a little extra time to myself. I hadn't been to The Nook in years and remembered they had a pretty good menu so I decided to stop by since I was already headed in that direction. I got there pretty early, around 9am, and there were already a few people dining. I ended up ordering sunny side up eggs, a side of bacon and a waffle. Everything was great and the customer service was excellent. I'll have to remember to stop by again soon. I forget that it's tucked away in this small shopping center next to the other plaza that has the Michael's and Yamatos. read more

The Nook is a convenient, comfortable breakfast spot that's nicely appointed and clean as can be, with a welcoming staff. Weekends will be busy and there will be a wait for a table, but I ventured in with some friends on a Wednesday, and we were quickly seated. On this occasion, our server took a fairly long time to come to our table, and was very low energy. One got the sense that she may have been preoccupied with some things, but she was still professional and did everything that needed to be done, so let's just chalk up the lack of enthusiasm to a Wednesday blues. I ordered the Hash Benedict, which replaces the traditional Canadian bacon with Corned Beef Hash but otherwise has all the usual Benedict elements. The eggs were poached nicely, with just the right amount of "runniness" to them, and the Hollandaise sauce had a pleasingly acidic bite and an enjoyably light consistency. The corned beef hash, however, was unmemorable. Not much flavor and perhaps a bit too heavy for adding so little taste to the dish. One friend ordered the Fort Lox, which is the Nook's take on the Jewish deli staple, Lox, Eggs and Onions. It was a generous portion, expertly scrambled, and served with properly browned breakfast potatoes. He ate every bite, and enjoyed it. His wife ordered the Big Mamma Omelette: eggs whites folded over spinach, veggie sausage, garlic, jalapenos and mushrooms, then topped with melted mozzarella. This was also a very generous portion, again served with nicely browned potatoes. Lots of ingredients, lots of flavor, and lots of satisfaction. All in all, this was a good, mid-week breakfast, though I'd not order the hash again (that's a personal thing), and I hope our server finds some bliss in the coming days. read more

So I'm in the middle. Really bad latte - tasted like burnt coffee water. Then it's expensive just for okay regular coffee. Service was sweet but largely inattentive, but they were busy. Waffle was quite good and fresh. Eggs and bacon were standard. I'd prefer thicker bacon but the portions are good. My friend got the special Benedict that came with pico de gallo except the pico had jalapeño slices cut in half all over it. Not normal pico. She had to pick those out. Her hashed browns were okay. I think they need to be crispier - mostly pretty dark on edges but super mushy inside. I think it's worth a visit but it's pretty basic diner food. If that's what you want, this is a great place. read more

We decided to try the breakfast and were positively surprised how amazing it was. I had the vegetable omelette and all the ingredients were fresh and so good. Seasoning on point. If your looking for a nice brekkie that's worth every penny, this is your place. It's alway been someplace that we would alway pop into for something good without any fuss. If your planning a weekend trip, be advise that it does get pretty busy. There's always going to be a line. What we tend to do is, if there's bar seating available, jump on it. Saves the hassle of waiting for a table. There's a few spot along the counter so it can be limited depending on the time you visit. Inside tables as well as outside and a little patio area. Menu, it literally has everything. The choices of pancakes options are amazing. Then you have all your omelettes, breakfast special as well as a lunch menu. They only open for breakfast and lunch. Honestly don't think I've even had anything besides their breakfast which is amazing. Service is alway great and all the staffs are very friendly. The food is alway good and plentiful. Their omelette, which is a plus for me alway comes with either toast, English muffins or bagel. And a side of either hash brown, house potatoes, fruit, cottage cheese or tomatoes slices. This visit, an order of the veggie omelette and mvp omelette. Both were amazing and flavorful in their own way. The potion of them is quite nice as well. When you enter, you are greeted and checked in. Wait time is usually not too bad here. When you're seated, service is typically very good. The food is super delicious and above par compared to other breakfast restaurants. The inside is usually not too quiet nor too loud, as there are lots of people inside a small restaurant and everyone is either talking with their friends or simply quiet and enjoying their meal. Recently went here with my family for Brunch and ordered our usuals - 1 order of Green Machine $17.95, 2 orders of Eggs Benedict $17.50 and 1 order of 6-4-3 with Chocolate Crunchy Toast. The food is the same quality, taste and portion, I love how they keep the price of their menu reasonable. We recently also went to one of the breakfast place in Tarzana that also has the Green Machine and that place was I think overpriced their menu over the years so we decided to drive 2 miles more. The service here is great, lots of staff that are very attentive, the place was really packed and there was a lots of people are waiting to be seated but we only waited 15 min for party of 4. The inside is still the same as when we last went there, same tables, chairs and faces of the servers. Lots of seating inside and out. Will definitely go back here and drive that extra 2 miles that to eat at the other overpriced place. read more

First time at this place and I have only one word for it; excellent! Service was amazing, it was friendly and attentive from the opening the door for us to come in to our attentive server that brought us the extra plate (we were sharing) without having to be asked. The place is super clean (from the bathroom to the dining room). Finally the food. The food was well price for today's economy and absolutely delicious. We had book club here today and we definitely enjoyed it. The location is super clean and has inside and outside seating. The wait was less than 10 minutes which is fantastic for brunch. Our waitress was very kind. Our food came out fast and we all enjoyed what we ordered. The only thing that wasn't very good was the French toast. I'm a sucker for a good breakfast spot, especially if they have good French Toast and The Nook is that place! The bacon is crispy, the pancakes are fluffy and the my favorite, French Toast has me wanting to come back for more. You can't make a reservation and it does get crowded but the tables flip fairly quickly so not too bad of a wait time. This place is very family friendly, no frills, but just tasty food. I'm always looking for the best matcha pancakes and The Nook has become one of my go-to spots when I'm in the area. This place, in my opinion, is an underrated spot which offers great food whether you're in the mood for breakfast or lunch, great service, and, of course, pancakes! Literally the trifecta of all trifectas. And aside from pancakes I love coffee that is strong and refillable and this place definitely offers that. Visiting Encino where our son and daughter in law live. They took us to neighborhood spot for brunch. Wonderful experience. Busy, waiting line outside. Put our name in for five and told it would be 30 to 40 minutes but we were lucky and seated in about 10 minutes. Great service from getting drinks, to ordering, to food arriving and receiving check. We also felt comfortable and never rushed. The food was done just as ordered, everything arrived at once, warm and all was delicious. Nice lil spot... Took my daughter here for a birthday brunch, and the place was buzzing! It was packed, but we snagged seats at the counter and were seated right away :) The staff was super friendly and attentive. I ordered the 6-4-3 (I think that's what it's called), and my daughter ordered an omelette. Hers came with toast and hashbrowns--there were other side options. My meal had French toast, eggs, and bacon. The eggs and bacon were okay -- nothing fancy, just your standard fare, which was totally fine. But the French toast? Absolute perfection! My only gripe is you get just two pieces (basically one slice of bread cut in half). Come on, let's get two full slices for four proper triangles next time! My daughter loved her omelette but was a little surprised by the style of hashbrowns -- still tasty, just not what she expected. We left full and happy, with a nice memory made. The bill came to $48 with tip, which felt a bit steep, but that's the way things are these days. Definitely recommend this place for a solid brunch vibe! read more

The Nook has some of the best pancakes in LA, specifically the green machine pancakes. I love all green tea and matcha desserts and these pancakes have the perfect amount of flavor and sweetness. The green tea mascarpone sauce and whipped cream pair so perfectly with the pancakes. They have other savory and sweet options on the menu as well, but the green machine pancakes are always a must for me when I'm here. read more

Since the opening of this particular business, the Zinc chain has opened in a few other locations. Those locations are much newer in not only their establishment but their design. This is not to say that this is still not an interesting, well-designed business, but, with time, it has become a little bit rundown. I hate to say it, but that is the truth. This location could really use an update and perhaps a deep cleaning. I was, in fact, kind of surprised at the condition of this business, for example, on the way towards their restrooms. From my opinion, it needs an clean up and an update. Also, the litter that surrounded some of the outdoor tables where I was sitting at my most recent visit was very surprising. This is just something to keep in mind if you're coming here for your first visit. In terms of what they offer for food, though it has evolved a bit over the years, they still have a great, heath-based menu, with some very interesting choices. For all of you vegetarians and vegans out there, you will, for sure, be able to find some tasty food to eat. Once upon a time, this restaurant was impacted with tons and tons of people. It was constantly full with people either going to the bakery and/or sitting down for table service. Shortly past their opening each day, there would be a line of people waiting for service. When we asked for utensils they didn't have any forks so they gave us one spoon and one knife. We made it work. The sawdust on the floor may be gone, but the personality certainly isn't. Philippe's still feels like old Los Angeles. That's worth mentioning all by itself. Could I explain why I'm giving Philippe's five stars? I suppose I could. DO NOT ORDER THE CRAB CAKE BENEDICT Let me start by saying that prior to my most recent visit I've been to the Nook two or three times and based on those visits the place would get five stars. I don't believe in over-penalizing an establishment for one bad experience. But this was one bad experience that went wrong in multiple ways. The first problem was how long it took to get service. I don't mean the wait to get a table (give yourselves plenty of time to be seated), I mean that once we were seated it took forever for someone to bring us drinks or take our orders. The second issue was with the crab cake benedict. I regret that I did not take a picture of what I received but there is no way this thing could be considered a crab cake. It looked like a deep fried compressed crab patty (if there was really any crab in it). Imagine if Del Taco had crab cakes, that's what this looked like. It was clearly something right out of a box in the freezer and thrown on top of an english muffin. It didn't look like a crap cake and it didn't taste like crab. It is really false advertising and grossly overpriced for what it is. Yuck. This was so disappointing. And it makes me nervous about exploring other new dishes that I haven't had before. Maybe I got lucky the first 2-3 times and there are many other nightmares like this hiding on the menu. Who knows. read more

I have been coming to the Nook for the past six months. A friend tipped me off about this place, and I have been coming here at least once a week since then. So why have I become such a fan of The Nook? First of all, staff is really nice and on top of their game. In addition, the menu offers a very good selection of different dishes. Usually I get the Krunch Berry pancake. I mean, how could you go wrong with fresh strawberries and bananas on whole wheat cakes, topped with almonds? You really can't, especially when the strawberries are really, really fresh. I have read some of the other reviews, especially critiques of the coffee, but I personally like the coffee. It can be a trifle strong, but I like my coffee that way. So, all in all, this is a very good place for breakfast. read more

I had breakfast this morning at the Nook and everything that could have gone wrong, went wrong. My order was prepared wrong and I had to send it back and waited another 15-20 minutes. When I did get my meal it was still not correct and I had to send a portion of it back (which I never actually received). I called the manager who was our server, Natalie, and she was truly rude and unapologetic. I told her that I ordered the food a certain way and she was insistent that I ordered it differently. I also told her about the other item on my order that I never received and she said "it is what it is". I paid my bill in full (no courtesy discount). Please do not go to this place. Service is not what it used to be. Such an awful experience and they don't care about customer service. read more

This is one of my favorite local places to grab brunch. The food is consistently good, but, like most good brunch places, it gets fairly crowded on Saturday and Sunday morning and afternoons. However, the Nook is well worth the wait. I particularly like the crepes at The Nook. My favorite crepe is the She Devil, which is a delicious blend of mascarpone sauce, fresh strawberries and whipped cream. It is rich and delicious, and the perfect item when you are in an indulgent mood. If you are feeling particularly hungry, then you should go for the Vive la France combination. It comes with two crepes wrapped around chicken apple sausage, and served with two eggs. This will be sure to satisfy your hunger! read more

Don't go to The Nook unless you want to be greeted by a rude hostess. Although our server was amazing and the food was delicious, our experience was ruined by the horrible attitude of the hostess. We came in put our names down for a party of 3 and were told it was about a 20 minute wait, while waiting I went inside to ask where the bathroom was and the host rudely told me while on her phone to "go wait outside, I'll tell you when you can come in" I didn't even get to ask her where the bathroom was. I've been to The Nook several times and always found the food consistently good. However, the quality seemed a bit off during my recent visit, which could have been better. I also went there hoping to do some work, but they don't offer Wi-Fi. It's hard to believe that nowadays, a place wouldn't provide such a basic amenity. Totally pleased with this place for breakfast. We've waited in line before but it was just taking too long to get in. Come here about once a week for breakfast, totally reliable, friendly place. Pancakes are very good, as are the many different omlettes. Nice friendly service, good coffee, relaxing spot with lots of locals.Only complainti have is in the warmer months they need to improve on their cooling system ,as it is now the doors are frequently open and it tends to get quite warm then. The lady marmalade, or pumpkin pancakes, were not excessively sweet, striking a harmonious balance of pumpkin flavor. Someone else brought our food, and I immediately noticed two issues. First, the eggs were overcooked. The presentation is beautiful, but it's not practical. They serve the eggs in a cast-iron skillet, which continues cooking delicate foods like eggs after they leave the kitchen. Before I even flipped them over, I could tell from the bubbles on top that they had overcooked. Sure enough, the bottom was browned and overdone. Then I cut into my steak. She asked me to hand back the entire serving board so they could remake the steak. That honestly surprised me. The only issue was the steak, so I simply moved my toast onto the board and handed her the plate instead. The replacement steak was much better, and I genuinely enjoyed the potatoes and the garlic butter that came with the meal. Unfortunately, the service never recovered. From the time our food arrived until we left around 1 p.m., nobody checked on our table, refilled our water, offered more coffee, or brought the check. It was frustrating because I saw our waitress walk around with water for other tables but didn't come to us at all. I eventually had to flag down another employee, who apologized, offered us water to go, and brought the check. Ironically, that's when our original waitress finally came back saying she'd bring it. Whether it was poor communication between staff or simply inattentive service, I honestly don't know. I usually prefer speaking with a manager directly rather than leaving a negative review, but getting anyone's attention was difficult enough that by the end of the meal I was simply ready to leave. I really wanted to like this place. The restaurant is beautiful, and it's easy to see why it's become popular on Instagram. Unfortunately, it felt like the focus was on creating an aesthetic experience rather than a great dining experience. For two people, the bill came to about $65 before tip, and it just didn't live up to the hype. The food alone is a 3-star experience, but the service is ultimately why I'm giving this restaurant 2 stars. A note for management: I'd strongly reconsider both staff training and how certain dishes are served. There's no practical reason to serve scrambled eggs in a cast-iron skillet when the residual heat continues cooking them after they leave the kitchen. Just as importantly, servers should be ensuring the entire dining experience is enjoyable not just taking an order and disappearing until it's time to drop off the food. Guests shouldn't have to flag someone down for refills or even the check. If you're looking for a trendy brunch spot with great photo opportunities, you'll probably enjoy it. If you're looking for thoughtful cooking, attentive service, and a restaurant where execution matches the presentation, I'd skip this one.
