Love the idea of paint your own pottery but I would say this business poorly executes the service. The place felt chaotic and rushed, even for an art place it seemed a little messy. The paint brushes were still dirty & tables were left uncleaned. Maybe it's because the workers were busy but they weren't very helpful, so it was a good thing they had directions on a wall or else we would've had no clue where to start. It's a fun activity but this place kinda let me down. read more

We just had my daughter 7th birthday party here and had a great time! They ask for a fee to book the party and use that to provide balloons and decorate. We went with the 2 hours party package for $16 per kid minimum of 6 Kids. We got to bring in pizza and cupcakes for the first hour and the kids painted during the second hour. It worked out perfect we had an awesome lady that was our birthday host and helped with the kids handing out pizza and painting and even cupcakes. It was a memory that will last her forever! HORRIBLE SERVICE. Today I went to here with my two nieces and my son. We were hoping to have a pleasant afternoon painting pottery, although from the time we first walked in the door we felt unwelcome and like an inconvenience. The girl with blonde highlights was very short with us and seemed to not want to be bothered by us in any way. She seemed irritated and didn't want to explain to us the process to start our painting. After my niece and son began to paint (they were the only ones who were painting) my niece asked for help from me on one part of her painting and all I showed her was how thick the paint should be layered. I had the paint brush in my hand for less than 5 seconds and a teenage girl quickly approached our table and me she would be charging me ten dollars for a studio fee. So I then explained to her I was showing my niece how to layer the paint and she very rudely told me it can't happen again or she would charge me. The kids wanted new colors and when they asked for more only were allowed one new color and had to use the same old plate. Of the three girls that were working, only was was friendly and helpful. The kids were disappointed with only being able to choose one new color, so I approached a different staff member and she was more then happy to help my kids choose a variety of colors that I was paying for a studio and pottery fee. The Mud Mill is a great idea and could potentially be a fun place, although the service needs improvement. Not being able to help your kids paint their pottery is absurd. read more

My coworkers & I went on a Friday evening and had an exceptional experience. There were 8 of us, so they let us use the large tables in the back. The young lady that was working was so helpful, polite & sweet. Great customer service! There were some really good options of items to paint, and we had a lot of fun. Rude, condescending customer service along with very used supplies and non-existent creative, fun atmosphere made this visit very unbearable. We felt rushed the entire way through and when we picked up the project a week later, nothing changed; the same rude, condescending behavior by a middle aged woman. I've been to this establishment twice. While it is nice and cozy, it is on the smaller side and often feels cramped. They have lots of items to choose from; anything you could think of. It's a nice escape from a busy week or what have you. However, they give you quarter sized dots of paint to work with, so if you're painting something big--prepare to get up every five minutes. And to add to that, they always seem annoyed/irritated with you for asking for more paint. The last time I was in, was before Christmas and I painted two ornaments. Both were very dear to me, as I put a lot of work into them and one was a memorial for my brother who has recently passed away. I had no problems, until I was in to pick them up. Both of my items were dropped and both of them had broke. They super glued them back together messily and just handed them to me and asked me if that was ok. I was completely outraged at the fact that they didnt offer to refund my money or come back in for free for their mistake. I understand mistakes happen, that was not the issue. The issue was how they handled it. I had to protest and ask for a refund, which was denied because Vicki Snell was not there. And of course none of the girls could contact her. As of now, I have a "OOPS" voucher to come back in and repaint two new ornaments. It is now February and I still cant bring myself to go back in there. The one thing that is completely lacking in this establishment, is "CUSTOMER SERVICE". Typically, there is about 2 high school aged girls running the joint and they always seemed more interested in their HS gossip to bother caring about your experience. In the long run, it could be way better---but then again, so could my decisions in where I want to go. read more

The Mud Mill is a great place to take your kids for controlled activities. We were able to let my daughter show her own creative side. She decided her own and color and started painting away. The selections on what to paint are covered, from trolls to Christmas plates and mugs. I would recommend this place to any with kids 2yrs or older. Im giving it 3 stars only because i like the place but the service sucked. The two girls working were not very helpful the one talked to me like i was stupid when i asked questions how the process worked. The other girl only became nicer and helpful after the other ones shift ended. Im in my late thirties and i felt bullied by teenagers just for asking about paint colors. Its to bad there are not more of these types of places around ( like color me mine). Oh and there selection of stuff ( for me anyways) was poor but my 3 year old had allot to choose from. My mom took me here last October before she became ill and we painted a few pieces together. I chose a candle set of three holders and a stand. She chose to paint a Halloween mummy mug. The mud mill provided many color options but dispersed them in tiny amounts. I kept having to get up to refill on the paints as I was trying to deepen the colors. The pieces took forever and a day until they finally became available, but they came out lovely. Location wise I like the Mud Mill. I came here with a friend on Friday when they stay open late. I enjoyed my painting experience & the atmosphere. Its true, the service was pretty spotty. I feel like the teen girls in there are pretty unhelpful & they treat you a bit like you are either stupid or not important enough to help. I think they were more interested in their social life, but whatever... teen girls suck anyway. On to our experience. They have lots of books to show you techniques. I chose a project that required no actual artistic ability. A mug & painted pumpkin. It was SO MUCH FUN!!! When I went to pick up my items, I was truly awestruck by the awesomeness of my mug. I didn't realize when they pull it out & ask if you like it, that you are suppose to look for cracks. What I thought was an imperfection in the glaze turned out to be a crack..... Unfortunately once you leave, forget about getting any sort of refund on damaged items. I called as soon as I got home but, alas, as I had signed the release form, I get a broken mug & maybe it can be re-fired....Maybe. I totally understand people probably do that all the time, but in my case it was genuine. I really wanted to hurl my beautiful broken mug against the wall, but I refrained. I am going back with the same friend this Friday to do some more things for Christmas gifts & rest assured, I will triple check my items at pick up! Also, its kind of expensive but COMPLETELY worth it if you enjoy crafty projects with kids or friends. They had a bridal shower in there while we were there & it looked like a fantastic idea! read more

I am a fan of the Mud Mill. For those unfamiliar with the business, it offers a wide range of bisque pottery pieces, from dishes to piggy banks to decorative pieces. Customers select a piece, paint it, turn it in at the counter to be glazed and fired, and receive it back in about a week. There is a nice selection of paint types and colors to choose from. The store would be a great place to host a child's birthday party. My sisters and I (in our 20s) go there for a "ladies' day out," to do something relaxing while we chat, and since we've seen others doing the same thing, we're not the only ones! The Mud Mill is a little on the pricey side, but it's no worse than the movies and much better than a spa day, and it's located by several of Lodi's excellent restaurants. This place sucks as far as pottery painting goes, well it sucks in general. Staff is stupid & very little selection, what they do have is over priced. Good luck if you want a set of anything, the staff told me that it would takes WEEKS to order a piece that they didn't have in stock, which was almost everything. I guess I've been spoiled going to places like this in major cities in the past because this place is a joke compared, but what to do? The management here is absolutely terrible! I have heard stories from previous employees of the mudmill and smack pie and I can no longer support these businesses. Every time I go to the mudmill, it is an absolute mess and understaffed. My pieces have come out multiple times with chips or smudges that were not there when I painted them. Unfortunately, this is the only place in Lodi where you can paint pottery. I have been a few times but will not be back. read more

I went in to paint with family. When I picked up my piece there was various areas missing paint. When I went back in the lady at the counter told me 1 in 500 have oily spots from the manufacturer or I had oil on my hands while I was painting . They could try and paint over which would take another 2 weeks or I could have a gift card. She would recommend she do a quick touch up and I could take my piece now. Which of course I chose. She painted it , and it looked great. I left. Halfway home, it started to chip in other places, mind you, I'm letting it dry in my front seat. By the time I got home, the place where she painted was now the color white. I could have done that. Thanks for nothing. My piece is grey. Never again will I be at the mudmill. read more

Me and my girlfriend took our daughters here. I'm Hispanic she's Asian and we were very disappointed in the service and the lack of interest the staff there showed in helping us. I very rarely would insinuate any kind of racial behavior but it was very obvious we weren't a priority to the staff. When a group of white ladies who were by the way very pleasant came in with their children they were greeted and the staff really took their time to explained the process of how things work there. Their children were entertained and the staff were very attentive to them. We sat there for long periods of time waiting to find out what to do next. Our children are under ten and started to notice and ask "why were the ladies not helping us" if we didn't have our children we wouldn't have wasted $110 there. We will never go there again..... read more

HORRIBLE SERVICE. First and last time ever going here. The concept of the place is fun and could have been a great time but the service from the staff was aweful. I had a 2pm appointment along with two other groups. I was the first of the 2pm's to arrive (and I did arrive a little early). Instead of giving me an open table reserved for the 2pm groups, I had to sit and wait for one of the occupied tables to empty. That just didn't make sense to me- why tell another party they had to hurry up and leave so I could have their table when there are open tables? .....PS, one of the 2pm groups arrived 30 min late so the table sat empty. The other thing that did not make sense business wise was that most of the tables seat 4 people. However, there was a table with 1 person and three tables with 2 people. Why not seat smaller groups together? Then there would be room to allow more customers? I would not have minded sharing with another mother/daughter combo instead of turning paying customers away. I could go on about the service, but will keep it short. Went there once, will not be returning. Would much rather try the one in Modesto. My daughter enjoyed it but I would rather drive a little farther for better service. read more

Really upset that I drove in from galt to paint on Saturday with my husband a two year old and there was nothing for us. We were told reservations take priority and tables were held for 2 hours before actual reservation time. No where on websites or fb did it say there would be reservations taking the whole store. I was there at 10:20. Expecting to be early so no issue. So upset that my two year old couldn't do what was promised or what she saw when she walked in Maybe you should update when you book up so families don't drive in the rain and get disappointed. We used to come to this place all the time, it's so fun, we recently moved and haven't been there for a few years and so we decided to go. We walk in and first of all the head lady there had an attitude and was extremely rude, and second every single table in there was reserved, why in the world would every single table be reserved what are you supposed to do when people walking around down town decide they would like to go paint something and have fun, when every fucking table is reserved, a word of advice to the owner don't reserve every table or put a sign outside that says reservations only. I went there with family to create something fun for a gift for Father's Day. The blond short chubby woman working was not friendly at all. She seemd as if we ( my family ) were bothering her stepping in to the place. I asked her question about the painting process,price, pickup, and she said I would have to hurry or come back another day because I only had 40 min. to paint. What? whatever.... Its a cup. I told her I would come back. because I thought it was a little rude and I want to make sure my family had plenty of time. So next week I did and she was there talking with another employee about another employee they didn't like...(rude)... whatever! I painted, paid and left. Next week I get a call that my cup is done but my sisters cups isnt even though we did them at the same time, same day. Now remember I said I was doing this for a Fathers Day gift..., WELL...I rush down from stockton to get my cup and there closed early !!!!!What !!!! what horriable service for such a cute place. Shame, I wont go back. I did get my cup the next day, but my sisters cup wasn't done till the following week ..way after Fathers Day, which was the whole point in going there. This place is a rip off and the service was horrible. I brought my 2 daughters and niece for what I thought would be a good experience painting pottery. There were two girls that looked like teenagers working there and no one with experience working with children as the website states. My daughters and niece were treated with an attitude when they asked for more paint. They are very STINGY with their paint. My niece asked for a new small foam paper plate and they refused to give her another one and just squirted the paint onto her old plate that had dry paint on it . I am upset that my daughters and niece didn't have a good experience. The ceramic pieces are pricey and there is a studio fee of $5-$7 per person. I would not recommend this place, go elsewhere if you want good service and experienced staff. read more

This place was a mess. We had reservations on Saturday and you would think reservations would make a difference. There isn't a very good selection of items to paint. A majority of the brushes were dirty. They were all in the sink so I got to doing dishes and washed what brushes I wanted to use. The paper towels were not restocked at the time I needed some. Not sure if there wasn't enough staff, but things were not up kept. The concept is fun though. Although it was a mess it was an enjoyable activity to do with friends and family.
