Joy of Watercolor will be the Featured Artist show for January 2015 with the students from their watercolor classes taught by Sandy Ridley. Art Reception will be on the 3rd of January 2015 from 4 PM to 7 PM at 9080 Elk Grove Blvd., Elk Grove, CA 95624. Event is free of charge with refreshments and musical entertainment. Paintings will range from $100 to $300 or more usually sized 16 inches by 20 inches matted and framed. There will also be original watercolor paintings matted (without frame) for $40 located in canvas racks. Sandy will also have 100's of cards with envelopes with a gloss photograph size 4 inches by 6 inches on these cards for $3 each or 4 for $10. PROS - Wonderful art work with different styles from many different artists. Most prices are reasonable. Going in, I think we were expecting something a little more free flowing and open creatively, more of an environment where there wasn't really a right or wrong way to create and kids could fully lean into their own ideas and style. What we found was that the class felt a bit more structured than we were personally looking for. That's not necessarily a bad thing at all, and I could definitely see how that style would work really well for kids who prefer more guidance and direction. It just ended up not being the best fit for my daughter's personality and the kind of creative environment we were hoping for. Everyone was nice, and the space itself was welcoming, it just ultimately wasn't quite the art experience we had envisioned for her. Helpful tip: If your child enjoys more structured instruction and guided projects, this may be a really good fit. If they prefer a more open-ended creative style, it's probably worth asking questions about the class format beforehand. Unfortunately it just didn't end up being the right fit for us personally.

So we walked straight through and followed the instructor and he starts telling us we're early and he's not ready yet/still setting up. Rather than self reflect that and understand he wasn't providing the best guidance he would get upset when folks would move ahead or not understand him. He had an attitude most of the course. Every time someone would ask for help he was frustrated. He didn't even tell us what we were making/the goal. He could've started by showing us OR provide more clear and patient instruction. But everyone learns differently. Making it was fun - we weren't going to let his poor attitude ruin our experience. You get unlimited clay and get to choose 2 pieces you like - come pick it up 6 weeks later. I wouldn't come back just because of the instructor, he made what should've been an absolute great time a very poor experience. We were apprehensive to ask for help since he was so unwelcoming and rude. Skip the beat on this class - it's too expensive for the "instruction/training" you're provided.

Kids emerge with dancing and singing skills, but it's so much more. Doing a show together means they make new friends while realizing what they are each capable of! Students can participate one show at a time or join an academy. Traveling and competing is an option but not required. Whether they do one show or stay for a decade, they will get so much out of the experience.

You'll need to download the Band app which many other theater companies utilize as well to communicate reminders. Our little one has had pleasant experiences and made new friends. It's built her confidence and she thoroughly enjoys performing. Tickets are reasonably priced and we're looking forward to seeing her in their upcoming Willy Wonka production. It's a great way for children in the Elk Grove area to participate in children's theater. Performances are currently held downtown, but everything is well spelled out beforehand. They're also great at answering questions in a timely manner. They offer a variety of shows, so don't fret if the first one you see isn't up your child's alley.
