Took two classes here and had very different experiences…read more The first class I went to was a resin workshop with Punky Power Productions and it was fun, engaging, and interactive. The instructor was very fun and really willing to help out and inspire. 5 stars. The second workshop i took, just this Sunday, was not great at all. It was a mosaic class and it might as well have been self led. The instructor gave us a brief 3-5 min tutorial on how to place the tiles and then did nothing else except sorted tiles the whole time. She never came around to see how we were doing or if we needed help. We had to keep asking her to come over if we had a question and she didn't really offer too much. She never told us what color we could use, and kept coming over and collecting the extra tiles as we were working. She didn't help us finish up and left before we were done. It was super disappointing.

I was a successful artist in my twenties, but life took over, and my art came to a screeching halt. I raised a family, had a busy life and a few careers, retired, and found myself living in San Jose. I thought I would take an art class to fill the time. This is how I wound up at the Art School of SF Bay. The first classes I took were watercolor and portraits, which I enjoyed, though I struggled to walk through the front door. I had no confidence; I was my own worst critic; I had a fear of making bad art; and when I looked around, everyone was so talented, most of them young enough to be my grandchild. My life changed when I found myself in Andrew Kim's Inking class. His upbeat, positive attitude gave every student a can-do attitude, including me, which helped me to relax. Andrew knew everything about art, from perspective and portraits to charcoal, ink, digital, manga, and more. Andrew is a doer of all art. He can do anything. His teaching style creates an atmosphere of learning; he will teach you how to do it; he will not do it for you. He made art fun. He reminds me of my son, who is a conductor. My son can hear a flat note in a room full of top-notch musicians. Just like Andrew, with his eagle eye, he will help you improve whatever project you are working on just by looking at it. Andrew promotes and encourages his students to be a community. He created a Discourse where everyone can interact with fellow students, get advice, build friendships outside of class, meet up for sketching and socializing, just be artists, and share their ideas and dreams. Having a support system is crucial. He also makes it easy to schedule make-ups and is a great communicator. Andrew makes sure everyone's artistic needs are met because he cares about his students. I continued with Inking and also added Open Studio, where I could work on my own projects. That is when my life changed. I began sketching dog portraits, posted them on my social media, and before I knew it, I had three commissions. It was absolutely shocking! I accepted the commissions, and ever since then, I have been off and running. I owe and credit all my success to Andrew and Art School of SF Bay. This would never have happened without him at my side. When people ask me what I do, I proudly say, "I am a commissioned pet portrait artist." I'm very proud of this accomplishment, something I would never dream of happening. Don't hesitate to contact Art School of SF Bay if you are interested in art. We inquired directly with CD for our date and time and she guided us thru the booking process. There was a last minute mixup but CD made every effort to offer us a successfull party....and CD definitely delivered. On the day of our party, we arrived early to a wonderful birthday party setup in the outdoor back patio, decorated nook and and an intimate upstairs studio for our party guests. To be honest, the setup she provided was exactly how we prefer. We were able to bring in and display our offerings for our guests and the parents enjoyed themselves hanging outside while the kids roamed around and enjoyed their painting session upstairs in the studio. CD and her team did an amazing job in making sure our party was a success! You can not go wrong when it comes to art and we were right to go with CD's Art Studio! First off, hats off for how easy they made the sign-up process, getting just the minimum information needed. Also liked that there wasn't special treatment for being new, the kids were plugged into the class as if they've been there all along. This helped more accurately assess if they wanted to keep coming back. The kids have been attending for a few months now, between the regular weekly classes + camps. The teachers are very patient and supportive. The kids walk out from their classes with high confidence and proud of their work, and they look forward to the next class, which speaks volumes. The staff is also very accommodating with their make-up policy trying their best to make it work for families. Improvement area: comms. While they send out comms every once in a while, it's usually general and not specific to each kid. There is usually very little time at the end of the class to get feedback from the teachers. I wish there was a bit more of a monthly/quarterly progress report.

My son had such a wonderful experience at this art camp! It felt very close-knit, with high-energy…read moreinstructors, strong supervision, and so many thoughtful details that kept the kids engaged. He came home excitedly telling me all about his day and the projects he made. I loved that they made the experience feel special--providing lunch, visiting places like California Pizza Kitchen and the Hello Kitty Cafe, walking around nearby stores, and incorporating creative projects along the way. At pickup, I even got to "buy" one of my sons sweet art pieces from his little $5 sale. So cute! The only challenge for us is logistics: the drive is about 35 minutes with traffic, and Valley Fair parking can be difficult, making for a long commute day. Because of that, we will probably save it for school holidays rather than use it regularly. But it is absolutely a high-quality camp, and I would love to return for another art class in the future.

I happened to park at Monroe St, and we took the elevator up, the escalator down, and TADA! We were magically standing right in front of this place! We had the most delightfully incredible time making little lands together. She's sweetly said that she wanted to make Mal from The Descendants, and the staff helped her with this. First we chose our scents and blended color and scents into our two candles and then from our leftover we got to make a special mini candle combining all of our candle wax!
