If you are looking for a laid back evening out with great live music- this place is for you. I only give it four stars, because I don't love the food. But a number of my friends love the BBQ. Super fun place! We visited around 10:30pm and the outside bar top gal was just leaving- she was very sweet though and helped us out until she left. It was easy since it wasn't too busy to go inside to do our ordering. As my friend described it, this place is like someone's "really cool, big backyard". These people are terrible neighbors. We have lived in our home near this establishment for seven years, most of that time without incident. However, for the past year and a half they have been cranking up their music so loud that we can hear it in our home a mile away. We have asked the manager/owner to turn it down and he says he will, but then every weekend it's loud again and we try to fall asleep to the sound of banging drums etc. read more

It's a cool place to sit outside and listen to live music. It is pretty much self service. Had to go to the bar to place an order. You wanna start a tab? Great outdoor libations! We met a very nice bartender, Megan - i like to call her "Amber" ha!! She was extremely attentive and friendly. Band was Rhythm Edition and they were super lively. Synopis: - Service - Terrible - Food Quality - Far worse than the Service *You've been warned* This a place where they allow you to grill your own food. And! I should def have opted for my own cooking skills, for the love of God. On my way in I saw the manager or owner at the bar and said: "It's been a couple years since I've been in, are we cooking our own food or ordering these days?" He said it would be faster to take a seat and order from a server. Bad advice. 10 minutes until the server arrived at our table. She was astonishingly gruff and impersonal. 10 more minutes until our drinks arrived and we had an opportunity to place our food order. Throughout our wait, we watched our server transform as she frequently danced with other patrons 2-3 minutes at a time. As she left the dance floor, we all took turns attempting to catch her attention for drink refills. 50 minutes later Server McGruff arrived with our cold food. The appetizers came with the meals... cold. So, again, everyone's food was COLD... perhaps a side effect of the dancing. Never got the second beer I ordered. My wings arrived with sauce that appeared to have been cut with water. The sauce would NOT stick to the wings and pooled at the bottom of the bowl. No additional amount of re-tossing in the bowl helped. The sauce was definitely watered down. Dear God. My burger was beyond well done. It had been ordered medium. It had a curled desiccated look. I ate it. It was as dry as it looked. We all struggled through our meals. We were all famished. And it had become a running joke of Just How Bad Can This Experience Get? We were ALL disappointed. The server received a 10% tip off the pretax amount of the check. I'm still angry with myself for rewarding our Happy-on-the-Dance-Floor-Irritated-to-be-Serving-Us server. We came here for my mom's birthday and by "we" I mean a ton of us. C'mon, we're Latinos, you know we mob deep and with a bunch of kids in tow. We arrived at 7:00 p.m. on a Sunday night. I guess kids aren't allowed past 8:00 but the place was DEAD and the couple of people that were there all had kids too. We had a great time! The sand volleyball courts were awesome. There was a guy on the mic singing everything from the Eagles to Michael Jackson, pretty funny. A bonfire was going and kids were roasting marshmallows. It was a perfect night. Unfortunately, I didn't order any food or drinks but my dad said his burger was the best he's ever had. The server was very sweet but kept forgetting things. The bathrooms were gross. Sure enough, right after the food arrived someone came up to us and told us we had to leave when we were done eating. I think it's asinine to treat your biggest money maker of the evening like that. No lie, I'm sure we doubled their revenue for the evening on booze alone. Ok, I get that they have rules and all, but really, there was only ONE other table by that time. We left no problem. One of my friends bands was playing there tonight and the website for this venue states it is family friendly and does not have any mention of kids being kicked out/not allowed after 8pm. My husband and our child showed up and there were children playing at a table right by the entrance, but we were stopped by a very rude doorman and told we weren't allowed in since it was after 8 and our child was with us. I thought he was joking and asked why there were other kids and he said he had asked them to pack up and go. The kicker however was 25 minutes later (after searching for another place to eat) when we drove by the entrance on our way out of the parking and saw the same kids playing inside by the entrance. Great place to hang out and chill with friends and a cold brew! I could see The Monastery becoming my go to place for happy hour. Drinks were cheap and food was decent bar food (not too greasy). Normally I would not write this type of review, however I have been coming to your location for the last 6 years and had the absolute worst experience tonight. Tonight was your annual Halloween party which we have been going to for the last 6 years since LIVING in the neighborhood with several families from our neighborhood. We have always been told that as long as we come in by a certain time, minors are permitted. Tonight I brought my 3 month old child. At the entrance, I was not stopped or instructed that I was not permitted to bring my child in. There was also no signage stating otherwise. I did not think anything of it as this has been the custom for the last 6 years. Around 10pm, I went to the restroom. I was followed into the restroom by your employee and harassed the entire time. From the start to the finish she told me I was not welcome and that I needed to leave immediately as children were not permitted. I was not drunk, belligerent, or rude. My child was asleep the entire time and not crying or making a fuss. I let her know that I was not trying to break any rules and that I simply needed to use the restroom and would be leaving immediately. The entire time I peed, in addition to washing my hands, she continued to harass me and tell me how much I was not welcome. I left the restroom when I was done and proceeded to load my child in the stroller. This woman did not even give me 5 minutes to load my child into the stroller before following me out of the restroom and continued to harass me, telling me that I needed to leave immediately. As I mentioned before, I've been coming to your location for 6 years and have never been treated this way. None of our waiters, the entire evening mentioned any problems with us. If these are the type of employees that you will be hiring in the future, we will no longer be going to your location as I personally would not like to be harassed to the degree that I was tonight, which, is rather unfortunate because we used to really enjoy going to your bar. This is no longer the friendly bar that it once was. I understand that customer service is a difficult job and thus I did not argue or treat this woman with disrespect. I don't mind following the rules and even told the woman this. The problem I have is how I was treated with an extreme amount of disrespect despite me being very respectful to this woman. read more

My favorite bar in the country was the Monastery in East Phoenix, mostly because of the sand volleyball court, but I also loved the self-serve BBQ, the fire pit, ping pong table, free water jug, the bench swings, shuffleboard, dogs, feral cats, 80's semi-porn adorned bathroom walls, etc. (Nice bushes.) The ultimate unpretentious hang out place. Monastery Mesa doesn't have the same charm, or hitsory, and it's much too far from the homes of my siblings to visit frequently, so I've only gone twice, but I guess it's technically my favorite bar. read more

As far as a fun place to be this would be it fire pits grills volleyball cornhole ping-pong horseshoes that's all fun stuff. They have lots of beer on tap some they're out of. I ordered a salad it had a hair in it that showed me that the chef wasn't wearing a hairnet such a bummer to. Tell the waitress about it she got me another salad. Are friends ordered the ribs so did my husband they were cold and so on and so forth if you're going to go there to have fun that would be the place and drink beer but the food is nothing special. read more

We visited The Monastery on Friday evening this past weekend and had an amazing time! It was our second time visiting, both on busy nights and we got lucky as we had the same server both times. Allie took care of our crew both times and considering she didn't miss a beat and couldnt have been better the first time, she exceeded herself the second time even more!! She nailed every drink order, her food recommendations for each person was spot-on, our drinks never emptied and she was fun to chat with! The guys in our entourage like to give people grief and she never missed a beat with her wit, smile and awesome personality! She, and The Monastery, are now our #1 GO-TO for a fun evening out! My friend ordered the chicken sandwich and his buns were black. My my other friend didn't get his dinner until we were all finished closed to 45 minutes. I love coming here but you can only do so for half the year; being that most of the bar is outside, it's simply too hot enjoy. In nice weather, this place is a great place to hang with friends and family and play some games while you're at it. The sand volleyball courts are awesome but are usually occupied with very serious players. The food here is pretty underwhelming. A while back we opted for the "cook your own burger" option and that was actually pretty neat. Overall wait til the weather is sensational and grab some friends to go play. Very disappointed in this place AGAIN!!!! This is a cool place, love the live music and atmosphere but the service is absolutely terrible. The last 2 times I've been here, it's been 20-30 minutes to even be acknowledged. The food (which is still a limited menu and overpriced) took 45 minutes. I came here Friday 9/24 for my birthday. We brought our teenage kids at 6:45pm to eat and celebrate "a little". The bouncer told us kids have to be out at 8pm. Okay.... We waited 25 minutes for a server to even take our order. Ordered food and drinks. Didn't get our food until 7:45. Kids only had 15 minutes to woof down their food. The bouncer comes around again while we are eating to remind us the kids have to be out by 8. Then 5 til 8:00, our sever tells us (for the 3rd time) the kids have to be out by 8. We are adults, not handicapped!! Total BS my kids had to rush to eat their food. Won't be coming here again, and won't be recommended this place. read more

The "Mon" has been my go to bar for many many years. I love this place!! Now I live in another state now, but still visit 4 times a year. My main meeting spot for friends and family. Killer location. I was brought here since I was 10 and it is still the place I come to on Sunday's for family volleyball. It is an awesome place to bring friends for relaxing, watching a sports game, listening to live music, and play recreational volleyball! They have good food at decent prices and certain days they have good specials on beer. You have to be 21 or be with a parent to get in as it is a bar. They have league volleyball on certain nights and I know Sunday's it's open court. They also have lots of games to keep your kids busy and they are pet friendly! Well known spot for bikers to come and relax and have drinks as well as lovers of outdoors and volleyball. read more

Just an awful experience. We went in very playful, happy and excited only to leave hungry, repulsed, and angry. We were seated across from an unbussed table and watched new customers literally sit there and move the dishes and food around while staff ignored it for an hour. As for our order, we ordered two steaks, three appetizers, and a chicken sandwich. The steaks came first for some reason. They didn't put the order in for the appetizers. Steaks were cold and raw. I returned mine while my hungry niece tried to chew hers. The chicken sandwich was okay. I asked for the manager. The rest came out before he arrived. An hour after ordering. My niece gave up on her steak just as they returned my very same steak which had been put back on the grill. I couldn't speak for a minute. We asked for the steaks to be removed from the bill. The manager halved our bill and we still paid $39 for a chicken sandwich and appetizers we had to take with us in boxes. Four of us are still very hungry and are now looking for a place to go at 9pm as we have more than an hour drive home. They finally cleaned the table after I complained about it twice. The site screams apathy. There is evident neglect of the items that are supposed to bring people in, like the connect four where the discs are literally falling apart. If I weren't so upset I would feel sad that I missed it at it's peak. It was probably something great when care was put into it. read more

So I am rating this for the time we spent here for Phoenix Tequila Fest. It's a great venue with ample outdoor area. They have a sand volleyball court, but it was not set up for the fest. Had a fire pit going which was extra nice this time of year and it happened to be a rain on/off day. We didn't try any of the food as we had eaten a big lunch before going, but the group we were with had indulged in some pretty awesome looking fare. Man!!! The nachos were piled high and loaded with all sorts of nacho type toppings!!! We definitely will need to return for drinks and food sometime soon. Anyway, we met one of the employees, Mike I believe, and he inquired how we enjoying the fest. Well, we did tell him all-in-all the tequila venders/reps were giving great samples, one was even giving whole 1 oz shot! But one vender was not even pouring 1/2 oz shots (which is what they were suppose to) as they had only 1 bottle of a certain tequila and as she said it had to last the 4 hours the fest was running. That's bogus! I mean then don't even bring that tequila. Mike said he was going to take a stroll around and check on the venders because everyone is to be giving at least 1/2 shots. We really appreciated that. So high 5 goes out to Mike. And we will be back just to check out their food offerings and beers! read more
