Been a while since I've been to the monastery. This place is always a good outdoor place specially when it's cool outside they've got live bands. They got really good food. The wings are good. The hamburgers are good little dance floor for when the live bands are playing they got a big open field for cornhole and sand volleyball. Once again it's more of a cooler place where you can be outside without burning out in the Arizona sun service is good. They're always checking on you going around making sure everyone's got what they need. read more

Really a mixed bag at the place. The venue is an awesome setup for live music, they have a patio stage and a main stage and when a good band is playing, the atmosphere is fantastic. The downside is the service. Wait staff consistently seems to be either uninterested in making sure tables are covered, or they're spread too thin. Either way, they have a major management problem. I've been at a table and never had a waitress even make eye contact for over an hour. The bar staff is better, but they end up with long lines to get served because so many customers give up on having a waiter or waitress help them. Do not come here expecting to sit down and have a meal... you may or may not ever get someone to come take your order, even on nights that have small crowds. This place could make a lot more money if they had great service and were able to keep the food and drinks flowing. read more

Came here for the Too Broke For Country Thunder fest, as my boyfriend's band was one of six country bands playing in this event. For as crazy busy as it was I thought the bar staff did a great job & got our drinks & eats out to us in a timely manner. The weather, however, had different ideas that night, especially during Strait Country & the Donny Grubb Band's sets. I commend the tech crew here for acting fast & taking measures to keep the bands & fans both safe during the horrific weather. Fun atmosphere overall--kind of. They've got some nice touches like sand volleyball and cornhole, plus great outdoor seating. The live music was a highlight. That said, the service was really slow. They even turned off March Madness on the main TV because one person wanted motocross. They tried putting basketball on a smaller screen but then walked off to pet a dog and left the channel guide up. It ended up being pretty funny for the five of us, at least. read more

We love coming here, but it could be so much better. First, your servers are spread way too thin. No one gets good service when they have 20 tables. Second, I know it's outside, but cigars should be banned. Between the cigar smoke and the dust from the volleyball court, we left earlier than we would have otherwise. They did finally wet down the court, but the cigar smoke is disgusting. He had that thing going the whole time we were there. No one wants to smell that all night and then go home smelling like it. I think the last time I was at The Monastery was probably 7 years ago? I live on the opposite side of town, so I haven't had a chance to check the place out since then. Tonight, I made a last minute decision to check out some live music. Bad Co. Experience was performing tonight I was looking forward to giving them a listen. Being that it was a Thursday night, I wasn't expecting a large crowd or anything, which is fine by me. I had no problem finding parking and I was greeted by several staff members when I walked into the courtyard. I found myself a table relatively close to the stage where the band was setting up. I was happy to see ashtrays on the tables so I could smoke one of my cigars during the show. I forgot how huge the outdoor area is. Lots of seating and covered areas. Shortly after seating myself, a gentleman came to my table to ask if I'd like something to drink. He took my order and told me that he wasn't my server, but he'd get me started and then hand me off to the server assigned to the section I was seated in. I thought that was very cool! Shortly after, the assigned server came back to my table with my beer and introduced herself. I placed a food order for their Famous Monk Burger. I really don't have high expectations for bar food. Typically it's nothing fancy and mediocre at best. I must say though, the burger was damn good! It was seasoned well and it was cooked as I ordered it - medium! The fries were... meh. Of course, I'll rarely rave about battered fries from anywhere since they're the bane of my existence. Service throughout the evening was excellent! I wish I could remember her name to give her some recognition here. She had long red hair. She was friendly attentive and efficient! Based on my experience here, I'm a bit shocked by some of the reviews. Maybe being here on a Thursday makes a difference? The online menu, while not robust, did have salad, burger and a few appetizers. When we were there, we were given menus with 5 or 6 appetizers. No salad or burger. However, when I complained the server, Payton, said they did have a chicken salad. There also a table beside us with pizza. When we asked the server she said "oh, didn't I mention that?" I only write a bad review when bring my issue to employees attention and they do nothing about it or blow me off. I was DD and was drinking tea. I suggested to my servervto bring a pitcher of tea so she didn't have to come back so often to refill my cup. We'll, no good deed goes unpunished as she charged me $12.50 for a pitcher of tea! When I asked her about it, she very shortly informed me that was the price fir a pitcher. She knew I was the only one drinking it. I understand if I was sharing it with everyone else. I was really excited to see Flash Pants at The Monastery. Unfortunately the plan fell apart as soon as we sat down. Our waiter assigned to our section (I think his name was Andrew) was terrible. He forgot to bring our drinks not once, not twice but 3 times! He literally walked past us 3 times noting that he forgot to bring our drinks. We decided to cozy up to the bar to get a drink... still no service. Really disappointing! We left thirsty within 30 minutes of arriving. Do not plan on playing volleyball there on Wednesdays or Sundays. You'll be watching and waiting for hours to play. Ask the staff about it and they'll tell you first come first serve. We learned they show up at noon to control the court and the establishment allows it because they were there first. Been a couple times and asked members of the team if we could play for a bit after watching them for almost three hours and was literally ignored. They were not interested at all in being flexible. We won't be going back. Hey Monastery-maybe you should charge for the court time if you have a league coming in and taking over the court. Just a thought! read more

My husband and I truly enjoy checking out "new to us" local flare. The Monastery was our choice a week or so ago. We were pretty sure that the absolutely packed parking lot was a good sign, more folks were heading inside than out. I was a little nervous parking my car right under a tow away zone sign, but being a Saturday night, I prayed the stars aligned in my favor. I loved the entrance, they have dedicated parking spots for bikes. It really feels like you are entering an old monastery as you walk in. It was confusing once inside, there were SO many people, everywhere, and it was hard to distinguish where to go or who to talk to for service. Unlike traditional eating establishments, there was no one welcoming us as we walked in and there wasn't a directional flow. We walked through the maze of the inside area, and outside area, trying to capture the attention of anyone to help us find a spot to sit, no one said anything. we had to stop a server and ask where to go. There were several events happening, many of the tables were blocked as reserved, and the scene was incredibly chaotic. After a bit of a search, we were able to find an empty and non reserved table on the left side of the stage next to the patio. Deciding that spot was adequate, we seated ourselves and wondered what would happen next. After about 15 minutes a staff member stopped by and took our drink orders. Drinks were served in plastic cups, which is a great idea for an outdoor setting. We ordered our food and relaxed in the Arizona fall evening. Considerable people watching commenced, as there was a volleyball game going on, and lots of kids running around playing. This was such a FUN night! Seeing all these people out living, after the last two years we have all experienced, was so refreshing. There were young families, and old families. Kids dancing, adults dancing, humans interacting. Everyone was smiling and happy. I think I ate the most enjoyable hamburger of all time that night, because I was happy too. The band came on at 7 and we had already been there for an hour and a half. The music was pretty ok, not great, not awful and we could sing along. We stuck around for the first 20 minutes or so and then headed out. We were still smiling. We came for the music and opted for some bar food on a very busy night. The deck right next to the sage was an awesome spot to drink and nibble some fries and wings, sunset came free. The service was as prompt as it could be given one server and two crowded parties of 20 each and us. But a really chill vibe. Can't wait for the music! Music btw was awesome! Great acoustics! We've been coming here for years and we were very disappointed in this place. We had planned a family gathering there on a Friday and we're shocked at their food selection. They have none... only thing available pretzels, fries, wings and that's it. The place seems to encourage just drinking it seems. I had fun there however, the food was hard and cold, I was overcharged for my cheeseburger and fries! Since when does a $16.00 meal turn into $22+ ?! I didn't even order a drink! So I am pretty upset about this and I will not go back there again. Service was also very slow. They didnt even take my friends order, he had to go order it twice, chase it down and an hour and a half later finally got the order. My other friend ordered tater tots and they were cold and so crunchy she didn't even eat them! Water pitcher never refilled either.and when I called the place they dont answer and it's business hours say they're open!! Nit a good way to run business. 2 stars because it is a big place roomy outdoors, but the brick parking for motorcycles isn't cutting it, 1 person dropped there bike and another got stuck on the bricks, bricks are a real safety issue and should be removed in the motorcycle area. My friend had her 50th birthday here on Saturday, March 22nd. Upon entering the Monastery, I knew I was in for a helluva ride. They had some tacky posters with scribbled writing announcing how they had a limited menu due to staffing shortages. Apparently they also jacked up their prices for said limited menu (Pizza, wings, chicken tenders, tots, and fries). My friend had reserved an outside gazebo area ($250) to ensure her and her guests would have saved seating.They had one waitress for the area who took the orders. I ordered the fries and the buffalo wings (can't go wrong, right ? .... Wrong! The wings came and they appeared like they were boiled and then flash fried. The skin was slimy and they were disgusting! the fries were mediocre. This cost a whopping $28! Outrageous. The girl who brought out the food was scared of her own shadow. She spoke like a church mouse and looked lost and wasn't very assertive when it came to finding who the food belong to. This place apparently punishes their customers by jacking up their prices because they can't manage their staffing levels. This place is a disappointment. Stay away. read more

Worst service EVER! Seated at the inside bar at 7 p.m. ordered a burger and 2 drinks. We finished our drinks... the bartender NEVER acknowledged us for another drink. 68 minutes later still no burger!!! It took 3 people to cancel the burger order. Ridiculous!!! Hadn't been here in a while, but was excited to celebrate a friend's bday. I honestly have nothing to say that's bad. While the whole place has changed, we had a great time. The music was right up our alley and my husband even won the "ugly sweater contest". $100 to the monastery! We put the bday boy's pic on it. Everyone thought it was hilarious, hence the 1st place award. Food was good, especially the fries. Drinks came out quick too even though the place was packed! Well whadaya know, the Monastery is not a monastery at all! Well, at least I didn't see any Monks or anyone dressed like a Monk while I was monkeying around there. After this visit, I actually think it's the hottest dancing, vball, food, games, music, bar joint in northeast Mesa!! And, if u're cool with bar food, then this place has pretty much everything u need!! This outdoor bar is ginormous!! They've expanded and added so much more seating. There used to be 2 vball courts but now there's only one court and plenty of seats to go around! Not sure how difficult it is to get in a few games of vball with only one court available, but if u're tired from playing, there are no shortage of seats for ur tired bum to sit on! I haven't tried their food recently, but from what I can remember, it wasn't bad. Just basic, tasty bar food. I remember their fries were super tasty! I was debating on the fourth star here because I love the layout and atmosphere but the food was overpriced bar food. So let's start with the positive. If you are looking for a laid back place to hang out on the weekends, this is a great place to go. Most of this place is outdoor seating which is perfect for the Arizona winter. They have a fair amount of shaded seating for the summer. I love all the outdoor games including the sand volleyball court. Service was great. Drink selection was good. Food was decent, but overpriced for typical bar food that was served in to-go containers. I probably would only come for drinks and not food next time. My friends and I spent a lazy Sunday afternoon here watching some people play sand volleyball. This might become our winter Sunday hangout. read more
