This place is AWESOME!!! It is something I look forward to when I have time on weekends !!! Their coffee, baked goods, and their breakfast. This morning there was a line out the door!!! But it went by pretty fast!! I usually get their TCHO Mocha with baked goods, but today is my very first time to have their English Muffin which they are famous for. English Muffin toasted with just butter!!! It is freaking good !!! I wish I ordered half a dozen of it!!! But I will next time!!! This place is just right around the corner of the Oxbow Market. The service is awesome ..nice staff! The price of their baked goods is reasonable!!! Go to this place before you head down to your wine tasting adventure...oh they also have one location in St Helena!!! read more

Mediocre pastries and 7-11 croissants are better. This place gets so much hype - why? The croissants are blah. I didn't get eat their English muffins but my wife did and she really enjoyed them so that's why I'm giving them 2 stars instead of 1. read more

After a lovely trip in Napa, we decided to go to this bakery before we leave. What a terrible experience. Customer service really does trump the food quality. The girl working the cashier was so rude, I tried to ignore it and give her the benefit of the doubt because everyone has bad days but a man that checked out right after me definitely received excellent customer service. My husband and I waited 20 min for his sandwich and only got it after we were rudely asked if they can help us with anything. No apology, smile or anything was given, just our sandwich. The coffee is bitter and the sandwich was extremely greasy! read more

Love the "bread of the week" prices. As a local, I really appreciate this and go there often. I miss the workers that used to work there. This place also has the BEST iced tea (I ask for a mix of black and sport tea) and vegan muffins (I'm not even vegan, oooh that rhymes). Solid spot for any/all bakes goods. Outstanding quality, one of a kind bakery not to miss. read more

The girl at the at the counter was too busy having conversation with the other employees.. Drinking while she is taking ours order, I'm not sure what she was drinking but it doesn't really matter.. For the business owner you're only as good as your employees. I'm not sure if it's just napa attitude or what!! When you spend almost a $100 at a bakery You would expect a little bit more. And if she was nice I probably buy more. It's a one star for you because of her. read more

Ya know what's crazy? How much someone's bad attitude affects you. I was so excited to finally get to buy bread direct from Model bakery instead of buying from Whole Foods. I mean you have the selection, the smell of baking bread, the cases of amazing breakfast pastry and of surprisingly, an asshole guy behind the counter to zap the thrill and excitement you came in with. Me, "What's sour rye?", asshole guy, "It's a sour rye, don't know what else to tell you." How about tell me how amazing it is.. How you begin with some special starter, or where you get the flour from, or how many days or hours it takes to ferment, just anything instead of being a disinterested dick. If you're not passionate about your job, find another one, you're not doing this business any favors. While I love Models bread, it's some of the best in Napa, I'll just pick it up from Whole Foods. At least they're happy to have my business. read more

So. Good. Best English muffins we've ever had. A bit expensive for how small it is, but we can't resist getting it every time we visit Napa. We prefer the breakfast sausage sandwich over the original breakfast because the sauce adds a nice flavor. A must try if you haven't had it yet! read more

I'm from LA so I am going to compare Model Bakery to a place I am familier with. It totally reminded me of Huckleberry but all grab and go style. An extensive menu with more than enough sweet treats and breads to choose from. Cakes, cupcakes, cookies, Danishes, croissants, pizza, sandwiches, quiche, frittata, side salads and much more. Plus they sold local Marshall Farms Honey Bears in several flavors. The French roll coveted with cheese, bacon, tomato and egg looked amazing. The staff was friendly and they had the yelp seal of approval on their front window so that was all I needed. read more

I love Model Bakery! The staff is always so welcoming & friendly. I love coming in here & smelling the bread being baked in the background. They offer fresh food. Some might be surprised to see that they also offer pizza, cookies, salads, sandwiches & coffee. My mouth is just watering thinking about their pizza. A con however, is the fact that in the summer, flies are all over the place, especially on the food because there are no cases, just glass windows. read more

Whoa, so weird how I've worked in Napa all these years and just never gotten around to trying out their famous English Muffins until recently. BEST FRIGGIN ENGLISH MUFFINS you'll ever try! I'm not even an english muffin fan, but I will say the model bakery sure gave me a different appreciation for them. Maybe because they bake these things with a sh*t ton of BUTTA (Paula Deen status), or maybe it could be the technique that gives the top part that nice crisp and crackle crunch. Whatever it may be, they are doing it right! Model bakery sure lives up to its reviews. You will not be disappointed! I also really like the lemon bars, YUM! read more

The coffee was really good, but the English muffins . . . OMG! Their reputation preceded them, so expectations were super high. Let's just say they didn't disappoint. They just ooze with deliciousness. Lightly toasted with just a hint of butter (you don't really need any) and a dollop of your favorite preserves - I'm talking heaven on a plate. I probably should've read some reviews as to where The Model Bakery was because "Oxbow Public Market" had two buildings! The bakery is located behind Gott's Roadside. When we turned the corner, I immediately noticed the line nearly out the door. At 9:30AM on Memorial Day? Dang! I quickly got in line & noticed they serve Blue Bottle Coffee, score!! Not only that but they also had soy milk! This was a huge plus for me because a lot of places still don't offer non-dairy options. Before even looking at the varieties of pastries, my bf had already decided we were going to share a bear claw & almond croissant. Fine by me because those are two of my favorites as well :) Apparently their English muffins are the star here but I didn't know that until now! I will keep that in mind for next time.. The almond croissant outshone the bear claw. The almond paste was smoother and sweeter but I'm not complaining ;) Great coffee, delicious baked goods & friendly staff, what more could we ask for? I would highly recommend this little bakery for a quick bite before a day of wine tasting! read more

The Model bakery has a physical location nearby but they were also at napa's farmers market (5/18) bakes: scones, pastries, breads, muffins eats: english muffin (2.5) -supposedly their signature bake. "world's best?" not sure, just a nice crunch pour: blue bottle coffee (2.25) -nice smell, smooth brew. read more

OMG. YUMMERS. Okay, I don't usually think this, but I have to say this place has one of the best, best, best breakfast sandwiches ever. I got their "famous" English muffin California sandwich, and it was basically bomb-tastic. I can't speak much for the egg, it was good not great, but it was really the rest of the sandwich that made it so well put together. I thoroughly, enjoyed my generous slices of avocado along with the cheese, the bacon ... OH heavenly. I didn't even know this place existed, and to find it on the side of Oxbow Market (not inside) was a charming surprise. They're also right next to the fatted calf which ... makes for a GREAT time when you're buying $60 worth of prosciutto! read more

We were staying at the Westin and the Model Bakery was a short walk over. The day prior they were out of the English muffins so we tried for the following day. We did online order and it was simple and easy. The shop is very small but they limit the number of customers in at a time because of COVID. We got the Chipotle Pesto breakfast and the original breakfast sandwich, both were very good and of course the English Muffin was the icing on top ( helps that it's on Oprah's favorite things!). We also got the spinach feta croissant and Mexican Wedding cake as snacks. All in all this bakery is a good competitor to Bouchon. read more

We got two Chorizo wraps and they were okay. For the price, I expected more flavor, but in my opinion, it lacked salt and some sort of spicy element. Again, it's probably a personal preference, but I've had better breakfast wraps for less. Definitely something you should try while in Napa though. They have many other items and the service was good. Interior was a bit smaller than expected and you have to wait outside, but that's not an issue at all. read more

The customer service during COVID is spot on exceptional--courteous and friendly, we ordered online and had the option of driving and picking up where they have brought it out to our car, or to pick up from inside, but since it's such a short walk from our hotel, my husband and I walked there, waited for a short while befits picking up our scrambled egg sausage spinach aioli sandwich on a muffin. Plus a custard Danish. It was decent, but if I lived here, I'd much rather eat at home. The sandwich we got was fresh, moist but when I get food from outside, I want the elements of each individual part to be more than the sum of its parts. Nothing was exceptional here. But I can't give it less than four stars because of the customer service and the quality of their ingredients which does shine, even though the preparation does not. The prices are super reasonable for the freshness and the portion also good, e.g. my photo below is half of a sandwich where you can see the freshness glistening. read more

My fiance and I supplemented our lunch at the Fatted Calf with a quick visit to the Model Bakery. The bakery is located in the Oxbow Market, which is home to many other interesting eateries, including the aforementioned Fatted Calf. The bakery was small and pleasant, and the staff was nice. Unfortunately, they stopped serving breakfast by the time we got there, so we stuck to their signature English muffins. These were perfect, fresh and warm with a great balance of structure and fluff. I will admit I'm no expert on English muffins, but these were probably the best I've ever encountered. They came with butter and jam, which were nice but maybe not even necessary. I wouldn't have minded exploring other options from Model Bakery, but as I stuffed myself next door, further sampling will have to wait until next time. For now, I can tell you to get an English muffin if you're anywhere in this general vicinity. read more

Came here on sunny fall day and ordered the classic bfast sandwich, the vegetarian, and one with wheat bread and avocados and bacon. MAN. The sandwiches were simple but so fresh and really seemed to embody the Napa valley food culture. Sitting outside in the sun and enjoying fluffy ass english muffins in Napa....doesn't get any better. The English Muffins are on my own list of "favorite things " since we first discovered the St. Helena based bakery. Then to find a Napa Branch of the Model Bakery, even closer, means MORE MUFFINS and more often!!! We've also tried cakes and scones - all first rate; the muffins are truly life changing though. Lets get straight to the point , shall we?? 1) English muffins- tasty, fluffy, delicious, sumptuous. They also sell this in small bags of 8 so you can just take those home with you. They also make the breakfast sandwhich with egg, cheese and ham which is really tasty. 2) Bacon Bread - this is a MUST if you are a bacon lover like me. You can eat small chunks and pieces of bavon goodness. 3) croissant- fluffy, buttery, light TIP: This should be your first stop before you start your wine tasting trip . Load on the carbs, so you can last all day drinking and enjoying your wine. Right next to it is fatted calf and GOTTS burger. read more

Do you love freshly baked bread? If so, I highly recommend stopping here while you're in Napa. Located at the Oxbow Marketplace, Model Bakery offers freshly baked breads, pre-made sammies, fresh pastries and their amazing English muffins. I've enjoyed their pastries, lemon bars and cookies. However, if you're hungry for an awesome breakfast sammie, you have to try theirs. As I said the English muffin is light, fluffy and just amazing. I also recommend an espresso and let the barista's show-off their latte art for you. This is one of my go-to bakeries in Napa. read more

Yum! Everything we had here has been amazing and it's not just because I was hungry. We ordered a lot- the chipotle sourdough sandwich, the model wrap, almond croissant, chocolate croissant, chocolate walnut cookies, almond macaroon cookie, custard danish, ginger molasses cookie, a six pack of English muffins, iced mocha, and iced matcha latte. The cookies are real standouts to me and those fluffy English muffins are too! A great breakfast spot or if you're in the mood for something sweet. I came here with 4 friends for breakfast on a Saturday morning. It's located at the Oxbow Public Market, which is a cute place you must check out if you're in Napa visiting! So glad we came here! For breakfast, I tried their Breakfast Sandwich which comes on top of their famous signature English muffins. My friend told me those English muffins were featured on Food Network's "Best Thing I Ever Ate" so I knew I definitely had to try them! She was right. I loved it! Sooo fluffy yet had a great chewy texture and structure! Tasted great with the hot, melted cheddar cheese and ham. They also have the most amazing granola parfait!!! We couldn't stop raving over the granola in it! The spices in it were amazing! They also sell Blue Bottle coffee here! Yay! :) The place can get crowded inside and they have a few benches outside where you can eat. Definitely bring a jacket if you're coming on a gloomy day! read more

Love this place! Great for a casual Sunday morning breakfast and coffee stop. They have lots of outdoor seating which is dog friendly, always a plus! Model is known for their amazing pastries and bread. They have a wonderful selection, even around 10/11pm. So many places like this sell Out on the weekend by 9am, but not Model. I recommend this place for a casual breakfast or lunch. read more

Overall (8/10) Price (7/10) atmosphere (9/10) - Quite quaint. Food (8/10) Coffee (2/10) - needed its own category cause it was terrible GREAT nice place to visit. English muffins? Yes, they are good. best in the world, not so sure. You can buy them a lot of ways but I suggest them TOASTED WITH SOME BUTTER. That way you can really taste it. The breakfast sandwich was good, but the oil does soak into that muffin a lot and it does make the sandwich greasy and not great. Would I come back? i guess? Maybe for some toasted english muffins or pastries. read more

History

Established in 1908.

The Model Bakery has been part of the Napa Valley for over 80 years. Our original location is in downtown St. Helena, where our artisan bakers still use original brick ovens built by Italian masons in the early 1920's. Our new bakery and storefront is located at the Oxbow Public Market in downtown Napa. We specialize in artisan breads made with organic stone ground flour and the highest quality ingredients. Twice daily our bakes include sourdough, pain levain, sweet french baguettes, toasted walnut bread, or harvest fruit levain. The Model Bakery is a family owned business, run by mother/ daughter team Karen and Sarah Mitchell "Our levain starter, used to start the fermentation in our bread dough, is made from wine grapes from our family's sustainably farmed vineyard. " In addition to a full breakfast and lunch menu, we offer a full line of baked pastries; scones and muffins, filled croissants, morning buns, pain au chocolate. We also have plenty of cakes, pies and desserts!

Meet the Business Owner: Sarah M.

Sarah Mitchell has been an owner of The Model Bakery since 2001. She moved back to the Napa Valley to help run the business with her mother, Karen, who started the business in 1984. Sarah has a degree in politics and Spanish from UC Santa Cruz, and spent several years working in corporate sales - Xerox, Canon and Oracle in the Bay Area. Sarah was tiring of the corporate culture and saw an opportunity to return to the Napa Valley and take over the family business. Sarah has helped grow the wholesale bread business to over 50 accounts in the Napa Valley we deliver to daily!

I remember the website didn't have tomato soup, but it was on the physical menu.

Knowing European culture, and especially Parisian cafés, are often very dog-friendly, and given Napa's well-known dog-loving atmosphere, I felt comfortable bringing my dog, who is a service animal. I was immediately asked to leave because only service animals are allowed, with the assumption made that my dog was not one. While he is in fact a service animal, the interaction left me feeling unwelcome and uncomfortable. There was no curiosity or neutral clarification... just an assumption and a request to leave. That moment really deflated the excitement I had walking in. Between the coffee experience and feeling unwelcome, I decided not to stay as long as planned or purchase anything further. I'm glad to see that others have had better experiences here, and the pastries certainly look lovely. I suppose those interested should trust other reviewers on that front. Unfortunately, based on my experience, I won't be returning.

My wife and I ordered two breakfast places and two pastries on our visit. The salmon salad plate was our healthy plate, which was really tasty and fresh. The true standout for me is their pork Belly Loco Moco. I never seem to love a loco moco plate, but I like them. They are typically served with a beef patty. Let me just say that this is a perfect plate of food. The pork belly melts in your mouth and has a delicious hoisin sauce drizzled on it. The eggs and pickled veggies god great with the pork belly, but there is also this wonderful gravy on the plate which is like a chicken gravy. It's so ridiculously good. I can't say enough good things about this plate and how much it works together in balance and harmony. We also tried their toasted Coconut donut, which is a glazed yeast donut with toasted coconut flakes. It was very good! But the dessert standout was the chocolate pistachio muffin. This was so moist, buttery and rich with chocolate and nuttiness. So delicious! I also want to add that I love the ambiance of Winston's and its lovely decor. This is a real gem of a place!

As for the food, I'd give it a 3/5. The chorizo in my omelet was overly salty, not in a seasoned way, but genuinely too much to enjoy. The potatoes also tasted like they had been fried multiple times, possibly to reheat, which left them with an off flavor.
