After an insulting encounter with Meadowlark my boyfriend and I came here at 1:15 on a Tuesday. Erin was a total sweetheart and served as promptly with a smile. Hell- she even gave us King Cake on Fat Tuesday. Erin is the best. Meadowlark... hire people like Erin!!! read more

I seriously have never given zero tip my whole life but the bartenders were so mean. I asked for a fruity drink, and it tasted horrible and not fruity at all. But I still tipped 20% and I tossed it. I went back to the bar and asked another bartender for a fruity drink. She made me a horrible one, too. I said, I don't like it, can you make me another one, or give me a straw to stir it up? Then the male bartender came over and said, you asked for a fruity drink, we gave you a fruity drink. If you don't like it, it is your problem. Another guy next to me was pissed too. He said the female bartender was very mean to him too. He did not know why why she was mad at all of us. Well I guess it's because they don't respect their customers who even give them good tips after getting a shitty drink and a shitty attitude. read more

Regularly love this place. Good spot. But it's upsetting when you throw &5-10 in the jukebox and they have no intentions of playing your music. So. I played all Kanye. You're welcome. read more

Went to the Matchbox last night for the first time. Fun little dive. GREAT art! Didn't drink anything fancy but enjoyed my beer and the very friendly and nice bartenders. Tended to get full with not a ton of chairs or tables and it was a Wednesday night. (Did I mention it was small?) The only downside is the neighborhood... my friend got mugged at knife point a few months ago down the street... point is: go, enjoy, don't hang out drunk outside alone. :) read more

i have always loved this space and frequented many events there when it was the Orange Cat. while i do miss those days, The Matchbox is a great addition. Awesome drink prices, esp. until 8pm! Cam, one of the bartenders is always great, and the place as a great vibe. this would be an awesome location to rent out for a private party. read more

Got an early start to the night while visiting a friend in Denver so after stopping at a few breweries we headed here. 1) there was a yellow lab puppy in the bar= instant 5 stars. 2) the bartenders were cool and friendly 3) they played great music 4) drinks are CHEAP Unfortunately we left around 11, after hanging out here for 3 hours, but I easily could have enjoyed the rest of my evening here. I should have convinced my friends to stay, oh well. read more

New neighborhood bar! Roll up garage door with fun "bar" on the street, and out back has some nice table and a bocci ball court! No food as of yet, but happy hour runs till 8pm! Woot! As other recommended, go up to find the rest rooms! The new place to hang! read more

Great little bar with a big window in the front! Happy hour here goes until 8:00 which is always a bonus. Service was great here, the bartenders were really nice and the cocktails were delicious. As others have stated there's no food here yet but you can have food delivered, I would recommend Walnut Room pizza! I really enjoyed this bar and next time I'm in the area I'll definitely come back in to grab a drink! read more

This is a pretty sweet bar, a bit down the street from the majority of the bars in the area though. But that gives it a more cozy feel. I went on a slightly cool night, but I think the bar decided to turn on the heat a bit preemptively..It was toasty!! They have a garage door in the front which would have been perfect opened up that night, but I guess it was just a tad cold outside (with the heat on high it woulda been perfect lol) They happened to have a charity even going on (all u can drink thing) so there was definitely some great people watching entertainment. We only had a few and didnt stay super long but I will definitely have to come back read more

Great art and atmosphere! What else do you need!!! I went with my brother and mom and we played bocce ball for about two hours! There is only one court though... So if you get stuck behind a party that is playing awhile you might have to wait...luckily we didn't get stuck behind anyoneOverall a great place to have a few beers play some bocce and enjoy the night. Oh also the Denver sky looks awesome at this place! read more

My wife, her friend, and I stopped here first last Friday night. Loved the atmosphere. It was pretty dark with the right amount of light to make it a bit intimate. This was definitely a hipster bar and I loved people watching. We ended up sitting at the bar. Our friend had a Denver passport for specials at bars. Even though The Matchbox was included in the booklet, the bartender explained that nobody actually came and talked to their establishment for approval so unfortunately they cannot honor the coupon. Cool. We didn't mind. It was still pretty awesome that they had happy hour deals until 8 pm. Specific beers were $3 which were mind blowing. Prices for alcohol in DC are way expensive so when we got our bill, my wife ended up tipping the bartender the same amount of our bill. Definitely loved this place in Rhino. We will definitely be back when we come visit again. read more

The staff at the door were far to aggressive and unfriendly. The music was terrible (slight my wrist, scream my brains out) and the place smelled pretty bad... overall one star environment, not recommended read more

I almost don't want to review this, because I want to be selfish and keep it all to my self! We drove past this place a couple weeks ago but didn't get the chance to stop in until Saturday night. It is one of the best bars in Denver. So cute, so cozy, so laid back, so amazing. read more

Awesome neighborhood bar for us folks that live in the 'hood. It started off quiet and now we make of the trendy hipsters that aren't OG Matchbox patrons, despite the bartenders and owners probably not knowing who I am and I've been in their bar mor than any other bar this year. I'm probably wrong about that - why I love the spot. If you haven't been here, stay away - it's getting crowded. You can come by Mondays and Tuesdays, see what you think. ;-) read more

Chill bar, cheap drinks, big back patio area, AND THERE WERE CUTE DOGS PATRONIZING THIS ESTABLISHMENT. Go during the day and get a photo with the graffiti walls. read more

This bar was the first stop on our Denver Patio Ride tour. The bar is very cool - I especially love the open garage door front. It was small but comfortable and relaxed. We didn't spend too much time here but they had killer drink specials for happy hour. read more

Neat place to grab a drink in the developing RiNo district of Denver. It has a neighborhood bar vibe about it- the kind of atmosphere you might seek out on a hot, slow summer night or when you just don't feel like staying at home. The decor is cool and includes some vintage advertising on what's now an interior wall but at one time was an exterior one. Don't miss the patio and bocce ball court out back. read more

What can I say about this place? First off, it's new classic. By that I mean they took an old exposed brick structure and kept what made sense and then added in fixtures that are all mostly wood and steel. One of my favorite things is the old ghost mural that is somehow on the inside of one of their walls. No idea how it got there but it has been there since as long as I can remember (I went when it used to be the Orange Cat). The bathrooms are REALLY nice at least for now. You have to remember that the bathrooms are up the stairs on the left and the ADA bathroom is the only one in the "main room". No signage as of yet for either the bathrooms or outside. The back patio is a little colorless but very spacious and has a bocce court. They are working on greening it up and possibly adding some murals. Drinks are great and they have some very good cocktails but, again no signage for what these cocktails are. You have to ask the bartender for the specials. But that is kinda what I like about this place, it is super low key and subtle but classy nonetheless. Right now, it is a great neighborhood bar with relatively cheap drinks and a great vibe. What will it be in 2years? Hopefully not the Gin Mill... read more

Matchbox is a favorite with my coworkers for happy hours. Very relaxed and great deals! Also a wonderful place for events! read more

Very cool bar in RINO! Very chill back patio when the weather's good! Definitely my favorite on Larimer.

Smack-dab in the middle of a strip that is becoming more hip by the day, the Matchbox is trendy and hip, but I go there to watch basketball games and I don't feel like the local jock. The happy hours are long (until 8pm) and decent (a dollar off; $2 for domestics; $3 for micros, wells, and house wine). The Matchbox has a bit of reputation for being toooo cooool, but I like it. I have a pretty low hipster threshold, and I don't find it to be too much. It's small, and it gets a little packed on the weekends. One of the few Fridays that I was there, it was standing room only. But they have a patio that opens up when the weather is nice. And it is stumbling distance to a couple other nice places (Our Mutual Friend; Mile High Spirits; the Meadowlark). If you're on a Larimer pub crawl, put the Matchbox on your list. read more

We came to Matchbox on Thursday night and we were disrespected and yelled at. It was 1:45 and the bar was packed they started kicking people out. We had just ordered a beer. We were harassed and yelled at the whole time by the door guy and the bartenders. I asked the door guy for he's name and he wouldn't tell me. That's just disrespectful and bad customer service. They rushed us to finish our beers and leave. We argued it was only 1:45 and we had time to finish our beers, they wouldn't leave us alone until we left. We felt disrespected, harassed and we will be contacting our lawyers it was horrific. read more

Really mediocre dive bar in my opinion. I went twice this weekend and both times I've felt like a nuisance to the bartenders and just overall really unwelcome. read more

Really cheap drinks ($3 Tecate) and grungy, dark inside but backyard was awesome. Cool to be surrounded by street art and plenty of space to hang out. Good for hanging out with a group of old friends to relax in ultra chilled out vibes and not spend a lot of money. read more

Pretty cool looking bar but the bartender super sucked. She kept interrupting our conversation with stupid pictures of her dog and then would take 100 years to bring us our beers. Probably never going here again. I'd do 0 stars if I could... read more

Went here for the first time last night. Its a cool bar and I was enjoying the place until the bartender told me who I could and couldn't talk to, tossed out my full drink and then kicked me out. read more

This bar is cool if you like when bartenders think they are the most badass thing on the planet. There are a couple good ones, but most of them are dicks. No matter how polite you are, they still come off rude. We get it, working at Matchbox makes you pretty cool.......................... On another note, the back patio is pretty rad. There's a bocce ball area and the music selection is usually kickass. The art on the walls usually sucks but most art does. Now if only the staff would smile at you... read more

Hosted a Tuesday evening After Hours business networking event at The Matchbox for the first time. We met out on the patio on a gorgeous summer evening. The group had a great time. Cool vibe. Parking is a challenge, but it's that way everywhere in RiNo. Would do another event there. read more

I used to like this place and would go here all the time. My wife and I showed up Saturday afternoon for me to get a drink and us watch basketball. There was a group of four people waiting outside. They mentioned they were waiting for a table of 4 but they suggested that there was a spot for two right around the corner. There was an unattended sign saying, "Please wait to be seated", but my wife is pregnant and had to use the restroom so we stepped past the sign to confirm the available seating and so she could go to the restroom. From the back, an obese hipster employee practically charged at us an literally yelled at my wife, "BACK THE F*** UP, CAN YOU F***** READ!?!?" I was completely taken back and the large, unkept rude man got in our faces so we complied. I told him the situation and that he didn't have to be so rude. He continued to say that we were the ones being rude. I told him we will be taking our business elsewhere and will not be returning ever. read more

Big fan of Matchbox, if I'm in the area. Just your typical bar, happy hour is nice and cheap. Still nothing like a 5-star experience because it's really nothing special. Although maybe that's a good thing when everything else in Denver is as trendy as it can get. read more

This place sucks. You laugh they throw you out. We had a group of 5 girls 2 guys and they kicked us out because one of us was having fun aka one lady. Terrible bar to be at. read more

Mm, The Matchbox isn't my bar of choice. As soon as we walked in, it was pretty dark (too dark for me..) the drink specials were pretty good.. and there's an outside area for games like corn hole and smokers.. but it was way too cold for us when were there last weekend. The space is small, and there seems to be an area for dancing.. but no one dances..I wouldn't mind coming back to this bar, but I wouldn't go out of my way to come here. read more

Only giving this 2 stars instead of 1 because the ambience was nice and the drinks were strong. Unfortunately there was a very rude/sarcastic man taking IDs at the door who ruined my experience of this place. I was with a group of 6 from out of town and we were all surprised by his multiple rude comments. I thought Denver natives were all very nice until I came across this man last night on July 14th. I'm not sure how a man of this nature landed a hospitality job with this kind of attitude. Pretty disappointed in this place and definitely would not recommend to a friend. read more

Great little divey bar with a large back yard and even a bocce ball court. Young, fun crowd. We were here on the Sunday of Labor Day weekend and it was still hopping. It's also in a fun neighborhood, close to other fun bars. read more

The Matchbox was opened by the owners of the Squire Lounge (one of the... let's call it 'most notorious' bars in Denver, at Colfax and Williams). The Squire is a topic for another time, but the Matchbox is absolutely lovely. Filling the space formerly known as the Orange Cat Studios, Sudhi and friends have lovingly turned the once almost-incinerated gallery/comedy haven into a classy, minimalist joint with nice lighting, high ceilings, beautiful wood barstools, a great wide glass garage door for a front window, a sprawling patio... and don't even get me started on the impeccably-tiled, sauna-reminiscent bathrooms (I might go into a hyphenated frenzy). It's almost hidden, with the heavy wood door set deep into the front, but it'll surely catch your eye if you're walking/biking from the Larimer Lounge or Meadowlark into Bar Bar/Curtis St/Rockaway territory. Interested to see what/who the regular clientele here will be. In the summer, that patio would be a great spot for a band and block-party-style festivities. There are familiar Denver faces too- Andrew and Cam of Squire bartending fame (so, listening to octogenarian felons whine/comedians get obliterated/kicking out violent hookers) are smilingly serving up inexpensive drinks here, along with Sam from Shag. I'm excited to see what this place becomes - their grand opening celebration is currently set for March 25th, according to the Westword. Expect nothing but a good time here, this place is fated to become a Denver favorite. read more

The Matchbox is a pretty typical dive bar. The drinks are strong, but you have to wait for them - the bartenders are not really into customer service. There is a decent patio at the back of the bar, and an indoor/outdoor counter at the front. I believe you can smoke on both so the air gets a little bit gross. It's a good bar crawl stop, but not necessarily a destination, at least not for me. read more

This review needs an update to mention the bloody mary making this bar has going on. Matchbox makes some amazing (and decently priced) bloodies with creative ingredients including Guinness and orange juice. I felt like I was watching a genius at work when these were being concocted. There is no skimping on the ingredients, sauces, spices and veggies. I have also learned that their happy hour runs from 3-8pm with $3 drafts, lots of which are of the Colorado craft variety. Pitchers are a bargain too at $10. While this place has definitely caught on and has been much more packed than my original visits about a year ago, I still love the vibe even with the growing crowds. It's just hard to beat a bar with a front that opens up to the street with heavy original brickwork inside, lots of natural wood, a decent jukebox, clean bathrooms, a "backyard" with a bocce court, super friendly bartenders AND courts numerous delicious food trucks to fill drunken bellies. read more

They say this isn't a bar for dancing..but dance we did!!! That jukebox machine is about $1,000 richer than it was prior to Saturday night. And yes, we did play some Bel Biv Devoe. It was amazing. That's all I remember. Thank you. Good day! read more
