The Malted Barley is a craft gastropub that opened in Westerly, Rhode Island in May 2011. It was founded by husband and wife Colin and Stephanie Bennett. The two met when they both worked at a brewery in Honolulu. Once returning to Rhode Island, the couple decided to open their own gastropub in Stephanie's hometown of Westerly. Dubbed "The Malted Barley", the business focused on craft beer paired with gourmet pretzel sandwiches. The pretzel dough is made fresh daily, and every pretzel is rolled and stuffed by hand. After much success, the Bennetts looked to franchise their business model. After signing a licensing agreement with investor Ron Koller, a second Malted Barley opened in Providence in March 2016. In March 2023, the Bennetts closed the original Malted Barley in Westerly so that they could focus on their flower farm, Echo Rock Flowers, as well as their family. The Malted Barley in Providence continues to run under the ownership of Ron Koller. I visited the original Westerly location of the Malted Barley in 2014 while I was on a craft beer bus tour. I was so impressed with their excellent craft beer selection and delicious gourmet pretzels that I decided to make the gastropub a stop on my craft beer bachelor party bus tour three years later. I was very sad when I heard that the original location closed down, but I took comfort in knowing that a second location still existed in Providence. I recently visited the Providence location for lunch while I was passing through the area. When I walked in, I immediately smelled the freshly baked pretzels. For food, I ordered the "Barley Bacon Beast Burger" (75 % beef 25 % bacon patty, pepperjack cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, more bacon w/ a side of ketchup) on an Everything Pretzel. It really hit the spot. I must add that these pretzels are essentially a hybrid between traditional Bavarian pretzels and New York-style bagels: salty and crunchy on the outside, soft and chewy on the inside. While looking over the beer menu, I was surprised to see that the Malted Barley now brews their own house beer in addition to guest taps. I ordered a taster flight that featured Malted Barley's "Banana Bread" (Traditional Ale) and "Monster Juice" (Hazy IPA), as well as Long Live Beerworks' "Invisible IPA" (hazy IPA) and Phantom Farms Brewing's "Coarse Woody Debris" (Saison). All of the beers were very refreshing and paired nicely with my pretzel sandwich. I still miss the original Westerly location, but it's nice to know that you can still find delicious pretzels sandwiches paired with craft beer just a little further away.
Stopped by for takeout on the way home after the Lion King. Service was fast and friendly. It definitely seemed like a popular spot cause it was pretty crowded. I sat at the bar and the server came by pretty quick to take my order. I ordered a grilled cheese with a bag of mango habanero chips. These are my all time favorite chips and I've actually never seen them anywhere but Homegoods - yes, I said Homegoods. Anyways, I wish I was able to chill a bit and have a drink cause their tap list was on point. Check out my pic. The grilled cheese was super delicious. What a great idea to use pretzels as the vessel for all sandwiches. I told my hubby next time we're in the area, we're def stopping by for another pretzel sammy and a beer... or two.
Our first meal in RI! We happened in on a Trivia Night and enjoyed being spectators. Our server was very friendly and informative. The hubs tried some local brews and a couple regular salted pretzels. I had a BLT with sour cream & onion chips and a Rhody Red Yacht Club soda. We split a Waffle Pretzel for dessert. Despite having a bar and it being Trivia Night, we could still talk with each other. I wish we had had more time in RI so we could've gone back.
Another yummy visit to Malted Barley! How do they get their pretzels to not be soggy even with balsamic dripping on my caprese pretzel sandwich? It's a mystery! Super tasty again and the dessert pretzel was divine--sorry no pic as I scarfed it down!
This is such a unique spot! The space is massive, making it perfect for groups or even solo dining. I was craving something different and stumbled upon this gem. Their pretzel dishes are absolutely delicious! I had an amazing chicken sandwich served on a pretzel--so refreshing to have something other than a regular bun. The pretzel was crispy, and the chicken was cooked to perfection. They also have a great selection of beer and a nice bar area. I tried an Espresso Martini, and it was fantastic. My server was super attentive and friendly, which made the experience even better. I'll definitely be back!
If you love soft pretzels, this spot is a must. They're even better paired with the phenomenal beer cheese--rich, velvety, and packed with flavor. The jalapeño cheddar pretzel was a favorite and had a perfect kick. The atmosphere is laid-back and inviting, with a seat-yourself setup and plenty of space for groups of all sizes. People even bring board games to hang out! Service is attentive but not overbearing, and the beer selection is excellent, with tons of draft options. Great food, great drinks, and a fun, easygoing vibe--I'll definitely be back!
I love it here!!! As an occasional gluten free girlie it's incredibly devastating to think you aren't able to eat soft pretzels (one of my favorite foods) but this place has the best gluten free ones and regular, I've had both and I am so impressed every single time. There are so many different kinds to choose from, you can even get your meal on a soft pretzel- which I did this time, I got a BLT on a GF pretzel with extra mayo. So yummy. But if you want to pick a million different dipping sauces and pair it with your pretzle you can do that too- nutella, mustard, ranch, COOKIE DOUGH- the options are literally endless. I have been here before for lunch with the girls but also have come for drinks before a night out. They have super yummy drinks- everyone should get the passion fruit flirtini. There's plenty of seating options- tables near the window, high top seating, bar seating and also a section towards the back that has games for the table (so fun!).
I've been a fan of Malted Barley for several years now. I visited the former Westerly location numerous times and the Providence location is now a must any time I'm in the city. From good vibes to even better food, I just can't get enough. Craving something salty? Sweet? Maybe spicy? Or a savory sandwich? Their list of pretzels is extensive and they're all made to order. There's something there for everyone. And they've got a wide range of drinks to choose from to help you wash those pretzels down.
Malted Barley offers a strong and distinctive beer selection for the discerning sort, including Mighty Squirrel, Narragansett, Founders, and their own brews. From fruited wheat beers to farmhouse ales, this place has something for everyone. Even for non-beer drinkers, the establishment has a decent cocktail list and a bar. I also tried out their monthly pretzel, an elote one. Loaded with powdered cheese and seasoning, this proved irresistible. The pretzel itself had an initial crunch but gave way to springy dough with corn kernels inside. The hearty pub cheese accompanying the pretzel could have been served on its own
The Malted Barley is such a cool place to hangout. I came on a Wednesday prior to the 7PM Trivia and it wasn't too crowded but as it got closer to 7pm, more people arrived. The Malted Barley hosts trivia on Monday and Wednesday at 7PM. There are high top wood tables and bench wood tables throughout the restaurant. You can use the QR codes to access the menu. Service was wonderful and friendly. We each ordered a sampler flight of four beers from their draft list. There were so many to choose from and looks like it is always changing. I chose the autumn ale, mango cart, nitro rübæus, and banana bread beer. I enjoy fruit beers so they all tasted good really good and had unique flavors. For food, we had the caprese salad which had sliced fresh mozzarella, sliced tomatoes, basil leaves, served with pretzel croutons and drizzled with a balsamic reduction. I really enjoyed how they incorporated pretzel croutons in this salad since it is not typically added. This was a good portion. Since the pretzel dough is made fresh daily and every pretzel is rolled and stuffed by hand, we had to try it with one of their house-made dipping sauces. We got a chocolate chip pretzel and it was really warm when it arrived and tasted like a dessert. We also ordered a Bratwurst sandwich which had bratwurst, sauerkraut, spicy brown beer mustard served on pretzel buns with chips. As someone who really enjoys pretzels, the pretzels were really good but just wished they were a little bigger. They have specials too so make sure to check out the board. Overall, I had a great time at The Malted Barley and hoping to check out their trivia nights one night and try other beers. Come grab a pretzel and a drink!
Kayla was super helpful and knowledgeable of the menu. I'm not a beer drinker and they only had one cider on the menu so Kayla provided me with some yummy suggestions. The cider on the menu was Peach Mango 10/10. I ordered the following beers to try: ccranberry crush 7/10, sweet tart 6/10, blueberry 7.8/10 this is coming from a cider girl. Great place to pregame with a flight or get to know someone new or old as they have lots of games there.

the pretzels here are to die for! absolutely delicious, well seasoned and creative options. if i lived nearby id be coming here for a beer and snack all the time. i got their elote special and it had a small bit of spice and plenty of flavor. the pretzel was warm with a perfect pillowy soft texture. honestly it was the best pretzel i've ever had. they also have beer flights and a wide range of local, national and international beers, so plenty to mix and match. it's always a nice touch to have a flight when offering a large selection, so huge plus for me. service here was fast and kind, we were able to order and get everything within 12 minutes. ambiance in here is nice, plenty of seating at the bar and around the restaurant. it's pretty cozy and warm in here but also has a few tvs for those wanting to catch a game. read more

I hate to give less than 4 stars. But I feel it is necessary here. Experience started off positive. Came in while it was slow on a Sunday afternoon and sat ourselves. Server came over to give us waters, came back quickly twice to take drinks then food orders. We were told our appetizers would come out shortly. Then we waited. Our food was finally brought out (all together). After we got everything we wanted more drinks. No one came back to check on the food or refill our drinks. Food was good, not great. The dipping sauces we ordered for the pretzel were really subpar. Beer cheese that was split and congealed, and guac that was dark and slimy. Everything else was decent. The standout part of the meal was actually the soup of the day, clam chowder. Cashing out with a gift card was a pain. We were also not provided an itemized receipt. The amount seemed way higher than expected. Either way, payment required two different transactions so we could tip on a credit card. Not their fault, but also our original server must have left, and the one that took over apparently was the only one on the floor even as the dining room started to fill up. Had we ordered more drinks like we wanted, it would have brought us over our gift card amount so we could have paid the remained with a credit card. I don't think we would go back. read more

Came here for a quick dinner and was pleasantly surprised at how GF friendly they were - they had gluten free pretzels buns, something I've been missing for years! Food was absolutely delicious and reasonably priced. The GF food also came out in a separate color basket so you felt confident they knew what they were doing (because the pretzels looked so good, I couldn't believe it was GF!) read more
Highlights 1. Gluten-Free* Options 2. Fun Atmosphere 3. Lots of Cool Beer and Ciders Stopped in recently while visiting Providence and was totally blown away! The atmosphere is cool with big TVs playing sports games, board games available and lots of table seating and bar seating. Service was quick and friendly. Our server was very knowledgeable about the gluten-friendly items and I was excited to learn that nearly all of their pretzel sandwiches can be made gluten-friendly. I went with the GF blueberry and brie grilled cheese with a side of the GF corn chowder ($5 fee to sub in soup for chips). Our server even had gluten-free hard cider recommendations. I went with the blackberry cider which was the perfect amount of tart and not overly sweet. I thought the food was good! I would recommend and will definitely be back on a future visit. *Not sure about shared kitchen and work spaces read more
First off the German chocolate stout was DELICIOUS! Sat at the bar for a late lunch on a Wednesday and Gordo couldn't have been more welcoming. Super friendly, which is always a huge plus, especially when dining alone at the bar. I opted for the turkey sandwich and was pleasantly surprised by how fresh and full of flavor it was. read more

My husband and I stopped in around 3 on a Wednesday. There were a few tables with people but not many. Service was fine and the food as was good. We ordered a grilled cheese pretzel and a tomato/ mozzarella stuffed pretzel with marinara dipping sauce. The grilled cheese was the star of the show. The stuffed pretzel had good flavor but was lacking in filling. Both were also much smaller than we expected.overall we enjoyed them, just wanted more. read more

The Malted Barley had its original Rhode Island store in Westerly...on Main street. Several years ago, they opened their downtown Providence location with the partnership of a guy named Ron Koller.......and since then it's been very popular. Ron Koller grew up in the former "BEER CAPITAL of the WORLD" Milwaukee, WI. Being around beer his whole young life (and the legal drinking age being 18...) he developed an affection for beer. While in college, he worked at an import beer bar that carried over 250 import beers. Over time (many many late nights of rigorous studying..), he had the opportunity to try all of them and found the imports had more flavor and variety than the domestic beer's he'd grown up with. Around 10 years ago, Ron witnessed the amazing rise in American craft beers and noticed the quality, variety and availability had not only caught up to the imports, but had surpassed them. So he developed a plan to create a new concept that focused on the amazing variety of local and regional craft brews that could operate in almost any city or town. Ron was very familiar with the Chicago market and found some great locations that could work, but suddenly, the economy started to go in a bad direction, so he put his plans on hold. Jumping forward a few years, Ron and his family moved to Rhode Island. Ron wanted to open a business and thought it was time to dust off the craft-beer-bar plan. He set out doing extensive "market research" by going to every craft beer bar, brewery and beer show in the region to become educated with all of the local and regional brands. Of course, he had to taste every beer he could, to LEARN about them......... While looking for locations in Providence, he visited the Malted Barley in Westerly, and quickly realized the amazing and unique "pretzel menu" they offered would be a perfect match for his restaurant. After working out a deal with the Westerly owners, a new Malted Barley was born in Providence! And this is how the Providence "Malted Barley" was born. Located on Westminster street it is easy for those who stroll around downtown or those who are there on business. They have trivia nights and also they cater to many special events. Check out their delicious burgers, pretzels and craft beers. read more
I ordered lunch for some colleagues and picked Malted Barley per their suggestion . I ordered simple chemical salad which they chose some sandwiches ( with pretzel of course ). Salad was fresh and tasty and the positive response from the sandwich echoed as well . Lists of items to try and I will certainly be back !! read more

Wow! Great selection of gluten free pretzels and pretzel sandwiches (or salads). We tried the everything pretzel, meatball sandwich (yes it's GF!) and Cali Chicken sandwich. They were all amazing. Our server was friendly and knowledgeable about their gluten free options. Parking is limited on the street but there are several lots nearby ($20 for the day). Definitely worth a visit if you're in Providence. You won't be disappointed! read more

Atmosphere: 4 We got there at 9:00PM for dinner, and it was super noisy inside. I understand that it's a bar-restaurant, but something about the acoustics inside makes the sound bounce around a lot. The restaurant has tons of seating and a sizable bar as well. Their menu is on their coasters - use your phones to bring it up with the QR code! Plating/Portion: 5 I ordered their house salad and soup du jour. My salad portion was huge! The salad was plated with colorful vegetables, dried cranberries, mandarin slices, etc. I shared the bowl of soup with my husband, and the soup was packed with ingredients. Flavors: 5 The vinaigrette for the salad is light and perfectly complements the rest of the salad ingredients. The soup and salad comes with pretzel croutons which is awesome. It added a nice crunch to the salad. Since the restaurant has so many pretzel dishes, I thought it was really creative that they found a way to include the pretzel in their salad and soup as well. My husband ordered the pretzel stuffed with gouda and chipotle paired with the pesto aioli sauce. I tried a bite and it was delicious. The flavors were well balanced and delicious! Definitely worth going! read more

How can a pretzel be so tasty? Well it can if you make it appease to everyone with lots of flavors and fun dips. We first came for an afternoon drink. Did the flight of beers and a cider. Decided to get their sugar and cinnamon pretzel with cream cheese frosting. Yes it was delicious, and yes it was very sweet. Good with some beers. Then we came back for late night drinking and I got their bratswurst pretzel sandwich and my hubby got their meatball pretzel sandwich. Both delicious, but the meatball pretzel sandwich was the winner! They should do their beer flight with mini pretzel bites that complement with the beer. Like a beer and pretzel flight. That would be cool! read more
The happy hour is awesome! We had such a fun time playing! Could not beat the ambiance on trivia night. Our waitress took great care of us the whole night. She is fantastic. And our group got a pretzel sampler and all of them were delicious. And the dipping sauces were great. I would come back for trivia night any night! read more
