the pretzels here are to die for! absolutely delicious, well seasoned and creative options. if i lived nearby id be coming here for a beer and snack all the time. i got their elote special and it had a small bit of spice and plenty of flavor. the pretzel was warm with a perfect pillowy soft texture. honestly it was the best pretzel i've ever had. they also have beer flights and a wide range of local, national and international beers, so plenty to mix and match. it's always a nice touch to have a flight when offering a large selection, so huge plus for me. service here was fast and kind, we were able to order and get everything within 12 minutes. ambiance in here is nice, plenty of seating at the bar and around the restaurant. it's pretty cozy and warm in here but also has a few tvs for those wanting to catch a game. read more

The Malted Barley is a craft gastropub that opened in Westerly, Rhode Island in May 2011. It was founded by husband and wife Colin and Stephanie Bennett. The two met when they both worked at a brewery in Honolulu. Once returning to Rhode Island, the couple decided to open their own gastropub in Stephanie's hometown of Westerly. Dubbed "The Malted Barley", the business focused on craft beer paired with gourmet pretzel sandwiches. The pretzel dough is made fresh daily, and every pretzel is rolled and stuffed by hand. After much success, the Bennetts looked to franchise their business model. After signing a licensing agreement with investor Ron Koller, a second Malted Barley opened in Providence in March 2016. In March 2023, the Bennetts closed the original Malted Barley in Westerly so that they could focus on their flower farm, Echo Rock Flowers, as well as their family. The Malted Barley in Providence continues to run under the ownership of Ron Koller. I visited the original Westerly location of the Malted Barley in 2014 while I was on a craft beer bus tour. I was so impressed with their excellent craft beer selection and delicious gourmet pretzels that I decided to make the gastropub a stop on my craft beer bachelor party bus tour three years later. I was very sad when I heard that the original location closed down, but I took comfort in knowing that a second location still existed in Providence. I recently visited the Providence location for lunch while I was passing through the area. When I walked in, I immediately smelled the freshly baked pretzels. For food, I ordered the "Barley Bacon Beast Burger" (75 % beef 25 % bacon patty, pepperjack cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, more bacon w/ a side of ketchup) on an Everything Pretzel. It really hit the spot. I must add that these pretzels are essentially a hybrid between traditional Bavarian pretzels and New York-style bagels: salty and crunchy on the outside, soft and chewy on the inside. While looking over the beer menu, I was surprised to see that the Malted Barley now brews their own house beer in addition to guest taps. I ordered a taster flight that featured Malted Barley's "Banana Bread" (Traditional Ale) and "Monster Juice" (Hazy IPA), as well as Long Live Beerworks' "Invisible IPA" (hazy IPA) and Phantom Farms Brewing's "Coarse Woody Debris" (Saison). All of the beers were very refreshing and paired nicely with my pretzel sandwich. I still miss the original Westerly location, but it's nice to know that you can still find delicious pretzels sandwiches paired with craft beer just a little further away. read more

Stopped by for takeout on the way home after the Lion King. Service was fast and friendly. It definitely seemed like a popular spot cause it was pretty crowded. I sat at the bar and the server came by pretty quick to take my order. I ordered a grilled cheese with a bag of mango habanero chips. These are my all time favorite chips and I've actually never seen them anywhere but Homegoods - yes, I said Homegoods. Our first meal in RI! We happened in on a Trivia Night and enjoyed being spectators. Our server was very friendly and informative. The hubs tried some local brews and a couple regular salted pretzels. I had a BLT with sour cream & onion chips and a Rhody Red Yacht Club soda. We split a Waffle Pretzel for dessert. You can also do flights and different size pours, which I appreciate. The service is always great as well! The food is good but just know it's limited to pretzel-related items. Our party ordered a tomato/mozzarella stuffed pretzel and the special of the day... an ELOTE pretzel to start. They were so good! We followed that with a Grilled Cheese Pretzel, A Hummus Pretzel and The steak and cheese pretzel. All the sandwiches were hot, fresh and delicious. Our server, PAIGE, was great. As an occasional gluten free girlie it's incredibly devastating to think you aren't able to eat soft pretzels (one of my favorite foods) but this place has the best gluten free ones and regular, I've had both and I am so impressed every single time. There are so many different kinds to choose from, you can even get your meal on a soft pretzel- which I did this time, I got a BLT on a GF pretzel with extra mayo. So yummy. But if you want to pick a million different dipping sauces and pair it with your pretzle you can do that too- nutella, mustard, ranch, COOKIE DOUGH- the options are literally endless. This place was the perfect antidote to a crazy hot and humid summer day of sightseeing. We swung in around 5pm on a Tuesday for a quick beer. The selection is quite impressive, both the number of taps as well as the variety of styles. My wife and I each went for a sampler. She found four malty beers and I stuck to IPA/Pale ale. We tried the garlic parsley pretzel with beer cheese dip. The dip was amazing, we joked that it should have been a choice in the beer sampler. The Malted Barley is such a cool place to hangout. I came on a Wednesday prior to the 7PM Trivia and it wasn't too crowded but as it got closer to 7pm, more people arrived. The Malted Barley hosts trivia on Monday and Wednesday at 7PM. There are high top wood tables and bench wood tables throughout the restaurant. You can use the QR codes to access the menu. Service was wonderful and friendly. We each ordered a sampler flight of four beers from their draft list. There were so many to choose from and looks like it is always changing. I chose the autumn ale, mango cart, nitro rübæus, and banana bread beer. I enjoy fruit beers so they all tasted good really good and had unique flavors. For food, we had the caprese salad which had sliced fresh mozzarella, sliced tomatoes, basil leaves, served with pretzel croutons and drizzled with a balsamic reduction. I really enjoyed how they incorporated pretzel croutons in this salad since it is not typically added. This was a good portion. Since the pretzel dough is made fresh daily and every pretzel is rolled and stuffed by hand, we had to try it with one of their house-made dipping sauces. We got a chocolate chip pretzel and it was really warm when it arrived and tasted like a dessert. We also ordered a Bratwurst sandwich which had bratwurst, sauerkraut, spicy brown beer mustard served on pretzel buns with chips. Stopped in today 4/4/26. Was there around 5:30 sign said seat yourself, so we did. Took about 15 minutes for anyone to stop by our table despite there only being a few tables occupied. Food was decent, however when it came time to pay the bill, the server took it upon herself to tap the 25% option on the machine before handing it to me and saying "sign this please" now I usually give a minimum of 20, but to pre select 25 percent, when your service sucked, is wild. And let's be real, the server did this because she's banking on most people not wanting to feel uncomfortable by selected a lower amount after she selected 25 herself. The Malted Barley had its original Rhode Island store in Westerly...on Main street. Several years ago, they opened their downtown Providence location with the partnership of a guy named Ron Koller.......and since then it's been very popular. Ron Koller grew up in the former "BEER CAPITAL of the WORLD" Milwaukee, WI. Being around beer his whole young life (and the legal drinking age being 18...) he developed an affection for beer. While in college, he worked at an import beer bar that carried over 250 import beers. Over time (many many late nights of rigorous studying..), he had the opportunity to try all of them and found the imports had more flavor and variety than the domestic beer's he'd grown up with. Around 10 years ago, Ron witnessed the amazing rise in American craft beers and noticed the quality, variety and availability had not only caught up to the imports, but had surpassed them. So he developed a plan to create a new concept that focused on the amazing variety of local and regional craft brews that could operate in almost any city or town. Ron was very familiar with the Chicago market and found some great locations that could work, but suddenly, the economy started to go in a bad direction, so he put his plans on hold. Jumping forward a few years, Ron and his family moved to Rhode Island. Ron wanted to open a business and thought it was time to dust off the craft-beer-bar plan. He set out doing extensive "market research" by going to every craft beer bar, brewery and beer show in the region to become educated with all of the local and regional brands. Of course, he had to taste every beer he could, to LEARN about them......... While looking for locations in Providence, he visited the Malted Barley in Westerly, and quickly realized the amazing and unique "pretzel menu" they offered would be a perfect match for his restaurant. After working out a deal with the Westerly owners, a new Malted Barley was born in Providence! And this is how the Providence "Malted Barley" was born. Located on Westminster street it is easy for those who stroll around downtown or those who are there on business. They have trivia nights and also they cater to many special events. Our server was friendly and knowledgeable about their gluten free options. Parking is limited on the street but there are several lots nearby ($20 for the day). Went to Malted Barley last Saturday in Providence. We previously went to the Westerly location but, that location is now closed for business. They have an extensive selection of beers and ales. I always have a pretzel BLT sandwich with Bourbon Barrel ale. The sandwich was a little disappointing because the pretzel roll is half the size of the rolls they originally had. The service and the waiter was fine. We went to the Malted Barley because I was craving this sandwich. I now have this out of my system. I will probably not be coming back. read more

Flavors: 5 The vinaigrette for the salad is light and perfectly complements the rest of the salad ingredients. The soup and salad comes with pretzel croutons which is awesome. It added a nice crunch to the salad. Since the restaurant has so many pretzel dishes, I thought it was really creative that they found a way to include the pretzel in their salad and soup as well. This is a review for grabbing drinks only. As you would expect, this place gets very packed on Saturdays! Naturally service was a bit slow. But that was fine, I just walked up to the bar for drinks. The Malted Barley features a very large beer selection so you will definitely find what you are looking for. Flights are available as well. Then we came back for late night drinking and I got their bratswurst pretzel sandwich and my hubby got their meatball pretzel sandwich. I can't believe I have never visited the Malted Barley until a couple of days ago, but I am so glad that I gave it a try! We were in Providence for work and decided to stop by for a late lunch, and even though I was a bit skeptical of the concept of a pretzel-focused restaurant, I was pleasantly surprised! Malted Barley is a fun and open eatery with lots of seating at rustic wooden tables and outside on Westminster Street, which is perfect for people watching. Even though the menu is limited to mostly pretzel based products (still yummy!), there are many flavors, plus gluten free and vegan options. I loved my Turkey Sandwich with garlic aioli on a savory pretzel (not pretzel bread.. like.. an actual soft pretzel), and I also was able to substitute chips on the side for a smaller version of their Caprese Salad (pretzel croutons included), which was nice. It's good to feel like you're being healthy, even when you're eating pretzels! We had to get dessert, and the Cinnamon Sugar pretzel was phenomenal. We tried one of the sweet dips in Cookie Dough, and it was just okay. However, the fabulous pretzel more than made up for it. We also split the Waffle Pretzel Sundae (cheat meal day!), which wasn't as good and tasted kind of stale. It would have been more fun if they made an actual waffle in a pretzel shape instead of pouring pretzel batter into a waffle maker. Not my fave, but the ice cream was tasty! At that point, I was so stuffed, it didn't really negatively impact the meal for me. That being said, the service was excellent! Even though it wasn't too crowded, I felt like our server offered great personalized attention to us, and really made the experience memorable and fun.
