Stopped here for a quick lunch pickup while I was in the area. They have homemade soup that changes daily (also posted on their website). I went in for a lunch combo: sandwich, chips, and drink. All for under $10 which is unheard of these days. I got a hot sandwich - the Turkey grill - bbq chips and an Arnold Palmer. The sandwich had their house sauce on it which seemed to be an herby yogurt sauce and was delicious. The staff were friendly and the place is super cute and kitschy inside. We ordered the 1/2 combo Chicken salad and a green bean casserole soup. I ordered the limeade and a turkey Rueben on GF bread. Ordered a TLC turkey grill to go or "en route". The baked potato soup is super light on flavor, needs a bit more spice to it, tastes too bland, added a bit of spicy sauce and it helps a little. The green bean casserole has more flavors than the baked potato, tastes okay. The limeade is not bad, not a lot of lime flavor to it, seems watered done some. The chicken salad wrap was nice and creamy, but a bit too salty. The bread was nicely toasted and was good overall. The turkey Rueben was , I liked the sauerkraut and pickled slaw blend, nice flavor combo. The turkey appeared to look like deli sandwich. Their GF bread is not bad and wasn't dry and tasted and looked like regular bread. The staff ran the carry out food over to us at twisted shamrock for us, we lost track of time. Really fantastic. We ordered pick up having never tried this place and we were incredibly happy with our meals. I had the chili and the Italian wrap. The chile was flavorful and with a nice liquid texture. That means it hasn't been sitting for days and getting thicker and clumpy. They offered onions and cheese which were perfect for the container size (which was a bit small, to be honest). The Italian wrap was delicious. They have a very distinctive oil and vinegar combo they use on their Italian sandwiches and it is perfect. The side of pickle went perfectly. The club my partner ordered was like a grilled panini but on pita bread. What a great choice. Less bread and more chance for the flavors of the fillings to stand out. I also had a fresh squeezed lemon-lime lemonade with iced tea combo (Arnold Palmer). Fantastic. Neither too sweet or tart like a lot of fresh lemonades. The staff was super friendly both while placing the order on the phone and when picking up. If we make it back to Royal Oak again, we will be giving this place more of our business. Excellent place. My feelings on the lunch cafe fall in the middle of the road category. I was neither impressed nor disappointed with my experience. Walking inside, I was confused by if this place was a restaurant or a store. There was clearly a cafe but there was all kinds of furniture and household items with price tags. It was also confusing which tables were for restaurant patrons versus for sale. I was happy to see they had gluten free bread for sandwiches and both soups they had that day were gluten free. You order at the counter and they bring out the food to you when it's ready. Service was a little slow but we weren't in a hurry. I ordered the Ruben and cup of Mac and cheese soup. Yup that's right, Mac and cheese soup! This definitely peaked my interest as I've never had such a thing. My friend had the tuna melt and baked potato soup. Both of us did not enjoy our soups. We agreed they were very bland and under seasoned. The sandwiches however, were both good. My Ruben was tasty and quite large. Only one bathroom so during lunch many people kept going up to the door but someone else was in it. Bathroom was clean though and had a fun beach theme. Our food took at least a solid 15 minutes maybe a bit longer for sandwiches. With the amount of workers I was expecting the food to come out a bit faster? Thankfully, when the food came it was excellent. My family and I came here for lunch and honestly we were not disappointed but the experience could definitely be improved upon. I enjoyed the seasonal squash soup with a half veggie grill. My son also had the half veggie grill, my husband had a whole turkey grill, and my picky 7 year old had a grilled pb&j (can't go wrong there). We all had the caramel apple cider. The caramel apple ciders were to die for!! I asked before hand if they were packets of powdered cider and the cashier was quick to state this cider is made in house and you could really tell! The squash soup was also phenomenal and the veggie is honestly the best veggie sandwich from a sandwich shop that I've ever had! It went very well with the fall theme as well. My husband sad his turkey grill was very "middle of the road." I gave one star for cleanliness mainly because of the gross amounts of dust that could easily blow into my food at any moment. I gave 4 stars for the food which is fitting for this type of establishment. Since I didn't go to a 5 star fancy restaurant, I am not rating it as such. This rating is on a scale of dump to excellent sandwich shop food, so 4 stars. I gave 5 stars for service, and 2 for ambiance due to the clutter. Friendly staff of 3 adult women & several HS girls - all pleasant & helpful. They have a great half sandwich/cup and f soup combo that I really enjoyed. Hearty chicken soup (read a bit more creamy than brothy) & tuna salad which had a touch of sweet relish in addition to the celery. A nice change & both were delish. Clubbin salad-- 6.50 for a whole, 4.50 for a half. Had I known their portions were so generous, I would have opted for the half. The Lunch Cafe is a nice spot for brunch. Others around got the sandwiches and the soup. Value: I would definitely say the salads are the best value for the amount of food you get. The sandwiches run anywhere between $4.50 - 8.50, and while it is not expensive, relative to the salad portions, you do not get that much. Taste: Salad itself was nothing spectacular-- your run of the mill greens from a Dole bag, sliced ham, sliced turkey, etc etc. I must say, the honey mustard dressing that came with was really great. It was tangy with a good consistency. The potato soup was "meh." Edible, but nothing too memorable. Atmosphere: It was pretty busy when we were there, around 1130am on a Saturday. Therefore, it got pretty loud and there was not a lot of seating. However, I suppose this shows its popularity. Overall, I would give it a 3.5/5, but I have to round up, so that's how I arrived at the 4/5.
