When I initially saw the lower star reviews I was hesitant to try this restaurant but I will say that after eating here I will definitely come back again! First of all, the setting is absolutely gorgeous. Secondly, my sister and I both ordered the Cadillac margarita and I cannot remember the last time I was able to order such a good margarita for $12. This is definitely a hidden gem in Bellingham when it comes to getting such a top notch Margarita for such a great price. When it comes to food, we shared the chicken avocado melt and it was delightful. Definitely heavy on the chicken so it did not seem like a fatty overkill and we were very happy with it. Plus the french fries were absolutely delicious! I have not obviously tried anything else on the menu but for what we had today, it definitely earned five stars. We had out of town guests & chose to take them to The Loft. One ordered the venison burger with blueberry sauce and truffled chèvre, one cod fish & chips, one halibut Oscar with Dungeness crab and one Caesar salad with chicken. All were excellent! Generous portions of fresh seafood and beautiful presentation! Sunday morning and very few diners, should have been our first clue. It took over 5 minutes to be seated with only three tables with diners. The young man seated us and gave us our menu's, and then we waited. Luckily the view was nice on the water and boats, awaiting their owners. We then had a young lady ask if we were ready, and we said yes. I ordered orange juice and eggs benedict, and my wife had the eggs benedict also. The hollandaise sauce must have been open a packet mix and heat, it was awful. The muffin was hard to ruin, but if you want hard bolied eggs on top that's what you will get, and it was only luke warm to boot. I had no idea The Loft existed, and now I'm excited to go back! We ended up with a small group and ran the whole gamut - apps, drinks, dinner, dessert. The bacon wrapped shrimp is tasty and the sauce it comes with is like a spicy sweet chili - definitely something I want to try to make at home. The wines by the glass are a little sub-par - Trapiche Malbec is definitely not one of the better ones, and it was disappointing it was the only one available by the glass, and the house cab was just not as full as I wanted it to be. We had the halibut fish and chips, the black rice paella, and the sirloin steak. Get the halibut - for a $2 upgrade, it was well worth it, even if it was a little difficult to eat (served in a bowl). The paella was ok, but needed more spice. I think when paella isn't made with saffron, it's just not as oomph-y. A steak is a steak, and they certainly know how to cook it. The desserts we decided on were the flourless chocolate cake, which was like a fudgy brick, and the peanut butter pie, which was light and fluffy. Seeing it was a nice Sunday night dinner with friends, we splurged on it, but otherwise I would have been just as happy with some Mallard's ice cream. Overall, service is decent, and while there was a small snafu with our bill, our server was able to correct it with no issues. It wasn't cheap (two under $20 entrees, three drinks, and a dessert for $93 with tip), but if you wanted to have a nice dinner with a lovely view of the marina, the Loft is your best bet. read more

It's clear that this place is hit or miss. What I can add to all these mixed reviews is to point out what one should avoid here. On my last visit, I ordered the Smash Burger. Here's the official description from their online menu: "Petit filet mignon, bacon, onion, jalapeños, cheddar & Havarti cheeses ground together & hand formed into patties. Presented on a grilled brioche bun with chopped pickle, shredded lettuce & our house made "Smash"." It sounds great, doesn't it? It turned out to be by far the driest patty I have ever had (including burgers from fast food restaurants). You can easily tell from my picture. First of all, I can't understand how patties with bacon and cheese ground together could be dry. Second of all, I don't understand they could possibly ask for $16.50 for this. This item needs to go off the menu! I think this burger deserves no more than one star. We have been going to The Loft for a few years and always enjoy going there (the atmosphere, staff, food and service. Ray is probably the best bartender/server/manager of any dining establishment in Bellingham. He is always on top of things - provides excellent customer service - helps other employees out when they need help. Just a great human being and an asset to The Loft. Since we always sit at the bar on the same day - same time, we have had Lauren as our bartender several times. As soon as she sees us, she gets us one water with ice and one without ice. She knows exactly what we order (and how we like it) but knows to double check with us - just in case we want something different. We enjoy her very much. She also provides excellent customer service. Emily is rather new to us but, so far, so good. Great personality and her service has been spot on. The only thing that I wish that The Loft would do is have some variation in the Happy Hour menu. It seems as if it has been the same forever. We would love to see perhaps a monthly special (like a hot dog special in July to celebrate the 4th or a turkey slider in November). In any case, we will keep on returning to The Loft - it is a great place to be! read more

Came here for lunch. I love the atmosphere. Service was good. We ordered a margarita flight. I was excited to hear that there were all individually made, rather than being premade or out of the gun. I was excited to see their size and presentation when they arrived. While they were tasty, they were extremely weak. There is no way after having four of them, that there was more than a trace of tequila in them. We ordered crab queso dip as an appetizer. Horrible. Tasted more like a corn chowder. Runny. No taste of queso at all. There was a nice lump of crabmeat but the corn overpowered. It really lacked flavor. The chips were thin and stale. Not worth the $13 price. Avocado fries were our favorite. Crisp and delicious s dipping sauce was lovely too. But a very small portion for $15. We ordered the Ahi salad and Thai chicken salad for lunch. Both looked nice in the presentation. The ahi salad had nice large pieces of ahi but overall the salad and dressing g was bland. The Thai salad had a cilantro vinaigrette which tasted mostly like basil. Looks like they've gotten some new tables and chairs. the female bathroom toilets didn't flush when I used them, but you have to wait for the waiter to refill, so their water pressure is down. The margarita comes in a mason jar and I had asked for no ice, so the brought it in a smaller glass. Nice place with a lovely view of the harbor. I wanted to mention how nice the waitstaff was but I was told that everyone there (Bellingham) is nice. I think this might be true especially when compared to NJ where I currently reside. I had the salmon taco but another person in our group had the grilled chicken with bacon sandwich which looked equally as yummy. My 19 yo daughter is a vegetarian so they allowed her to get Mac-n-cheese from the kids menu. She enjoyed it and the boat in which it came. Nice place and I hope to go back soon. read more

This place used to be good before COVID. Now they have unhappy staff who don't seem to want to be there and the food has gone downhill. They now put bacon in the Bloody Mary's which wasn't a thing before! Guess they got to cater to the Canadians eh? I admit the quality of our experience was very much enhanced by our seat on the balcony overlooking the harbor as the sun set, which was lovely. Kimberly was our server, and turned down our request to be moved outside on the patio (when 3 seats were available) because "there's just too many reservations for that tonight" ... we finished our meal with 3 empty patio tables. Food- sub par. Don't get their steak salad unless you're looking for a couple WELL DONE slices of meat covered in lettuce. Emphasis on couple. We have given this place numerous opportunities and we've been disappointed every time. Service is slow, Tetris me and fake. The will never check on you while your eating and only show enthusiasm once they drop the check off which you usually have to ask for multiple times. Good is always over cooked and cold. Loft, you sucked the first time we tried you, but we decided to give you another chance after three years. I am deeply regretting the $100 I spent on our disgusting meal last Sunday. I will give props to the waiter, he was kind and accommodating. But he couldn't save the experience. We started with poutine to share, the gravy was okay, but there was literally only three cheese curds. I counted because my kid was so disappointed. My kid ordered the childrens pasta, which was literally ten penne noodles, a tiny cup of fries and some gummies in an elaborate large paper ship. Lose the ship and gross gummies and feed my kid a decent meal. I got a simple burger, figuring, they can't mess this up too bad. It was tasteless and rare. Umm, no thanks. I ate around the edge as I was starving and let the rest go. The most disgusting plate was my husband's halibut tacos. He literally took one bite and said I'm not eating that. The fish was not halibut and definitely not fresh as it was rubbery with a weird flavor. The tortillas looked/tasted like store bought flour tortillas. The lettuce/cabbage mix they put on top was wilted and slimy. The onion was diced into massive chunks, no one wants to eat that. I might as well have folded a $100 bill into a paper airplane and flew it off of their pretty deck into the bay. That would have been a better experience. So disgusting and absolutely no excuse for the time it took to make this mess. That was your last chance with us! We will not be returning. read more

The Loft is a default restaurant for my wife and me when we want to do a shoreside dinner. When its predecessor restaurant closed years ago, we waited anxiously to see what the next round would be like. Early on, the menu was less than profound, but every visit seems to allow us to discover better and better choices. Since 2017, we think of this as a great choice for joining friends when we want seaside atmosphere, reasonable price, and enjoyable food. In the past dozen or more visits, we've had no disappointments. We try different selections almost every trip, and there seems to always besomething unique and interesting about our order. Service is also a treat, avoiding the formality of "white tablecloth" restaurants in favor of the "let's take care of you" feel which makes a dinner out into a dining experience. Worst Caesar salad: not taste--size! For a dinner-size salad we thought it would be much bigger; satisfying at least. It was the size of a small dinner salad that comes before a meal. We had originally thought the server made a mistake, but no, this is what we each received. 3 croutons and if you wanted anchovy one must pay an extra $2! No side bread, nothing! We joked together "where shall we go after this to get something filling?" We did mention our concerns to the server who then sent over the Lead Server who explained that the cost of food, their great location, and chef determines the size of a Dinner-size salad. Oh well, lesson learned, $12.90 for a small side caesar at The Loft/Bellingham -- Never again. If seeking bland food with terrible service, this is your place! Seriously. You know when the service is so bad that a manager isn't going to help? Yup. Or when the food is beyond anything resembling food? Service, if calling it that. Much more interested in flirting with each other than the few patrons present, including us. Took ten minutes in a near empty restaurant to even get asked about beverages. No refills, no follow up, had to flag down to pay, had to get up to ask for a tolerable dressing for the salad. Food. Not really. It looked like food, but seriously - no. The fried avocado could not be saved. Fried food? Easy. A dash of salt and some garlic powder. A nice sauce side. Not this. Bland, overdone and just meh. The ahi salad - do not get this. The tuna was tough, stringy and flavorless. How hard is it to slice through ahi? The wasabi dressing is a liquid wasabi - it has no other flavors and clearly was intended to overpower a sad dish. I paired with the balsamic which helped, but no. And the waiter was kind enough to charge extra for the balsamic! Paying extra for something is fine, but paying extra to salvage a dish? In hindsight I should have sent it back. The bacon shrimp was meh. There are so many brilliant restaurants in the area. Keenan's, Lighthouse Grill and Anthony's Hearthfire are three easy recommendations. read more

Unhappy customer...I have been a regular here for years. First time back since Covid. Have to say, not the greatest experience. The food was awesome, the server was super friendly and fast. As usual, the portions were great- enough to take some home for later as usual. But when we got up to leave, we weren't more than 20 feet from our table (not even out the door) when we realized we'd forgotten our to go containers. I ran back not 20 seconds after walking away to find that our table had been bussed and our food in the garbage. I argued to get our food back And the manager (who actually never made an appearance we only spoke to the servers) said that since we'd left our table we weren't getting our food back. Not cool. I've worked in the hospitality industry for years and I have always made sure the customer left happy. And I did not leave happy. I won't be back. read more
