We stopped in for a mid-afternoon "linner" and were warmly greeted at the front desk by one of the servers, who gave us a choice of windows with chairs or booths away from the windows. We choose windows. We split a bowl of clam chowder. It was a bit thicker than we like, but there were plenty of clams and the seasoning was on point. She ordered fish and chips and I order battered shrimp tacos. Both were perfectly cooked and the batter was exceptionally light and crispy. Neither of us could finish our plates and felt super guilty about leaving the rest behind. Next time, we think we'll pay the full price but ask for half-orders so as not to waste food. As to price, some other reviewers complained about that. We realize that most restaurant have to charge more due to the huge spike in grocery and fuel costs over the past couple of years. My wife's 94-year-old grandma loves CJ's Beach House. In what looks like an actual old beach house near the water, CJ's Beach House is a vibe. There's plenty of seating inside, including private rooms and a bar, but if the weather is nice, sit on the outdoor patio. Service was excellent! Our server stayed on top of our orders and food despite a good flow of patrons. The food was better than we expected! The prawns and cocktail sauce was good and the B.P. Burger was big and delicious! Even the French fries were great. My wife enjoyed her mussels and our eight-year-old daughter loved the mac and cheese. The only thing that wasn't great was the margarita. This is always a go-to for our family when vacationing at Birch Bay! The deck was full when we came for lunch, but we were seated immediately at an inside table for 7 people. Our server was delightful and very attentive. I opted for a small Caesar salad, oyster shooter and French onion soup. LOVED the soup - not overly salted and just the right amount of gooey cheese, onions and bread. I would pass on the shooter next time, though, as it was just too big for the glass and added cocktail sauce. The others loved the fish and chips, and my husband said the Waygu beef burger was the best he's ever had. One daughter is vegetarian and, sadly, she had very few options to choose from. CJ's has gotten expensive! $23.00 for a London broil beef dip. Fancy name for a French dip. I will say the caramelized onions make it better than the average French dip. But that doesn't make it worth $23.00. Then they only give you a 1/2 cup of Au jus. When I asked for a second au jus I was charged a $1.00 for another 1/2 cup. When I questioned the waiter about why they only give you a 1/2 cup, I was told that that is their normal portion. I guess so they can charge you a dollar for another 1/2 cup. Really? Is au jus that expensive that you have to charge for more? As if the French dip isn't expensive enough. Probably my last time at CJ'S. read more

We came on a Sunday evening for early dinner. The bar next door was packed so we were a little nervous when we noticed it was sparsely filled at CJs. However, overall we had a good experience. The service was decent and the servers were friendly. They offered good suggestions and were patient when checking in. The food itself was decent. Though the fish and chips were EXCELLENT. They have been called the best fish and chips around so our expectations were high, but they lived up to them. The fish was seasoned and fried beautifully and the chips were crispy and very tasty. We also ordered the ribs which were soft and had bbq sauce, but probably about average. Their creme brulee dessert though was bomb. The ambiance is casual and an older style restaurant with a dated look. They have booths and also seating with armchairs by the window. Good for a family dinner or casual date. The price was reasonable at about 20-30 per person with steaks being more. Overall, GOOOOOD fish and chips, average environment, but good for casual and family friendly eats. I had high hopes but was disappointed. Clam chowder was good but not great; roll that came with it was just OK; I would've really enjoyed a nice, chewy, flavorful sourdough roll. Nice thing was that both the soup was hot and the roll was warm. The Caesar salad was tasty, with lots of Parmesan cheese. It used to be a favorite spot of my grandpa's (aka Grumps) and so bringing family from California and my grandpa's close neighbor friend was a great experience. Well this was a first. The first issue was being told I could not have cheese on the side of my burger instead of on because "they don't allow any modifications, it's either cheese on or off". Perfectly fried batter, perfectly cooked and moist fish, with fries so crispy loud they caused a Tsunami across the street on the beach. The fish was crispy enough to be picked up and eaten, first bite to last. They provide malt vinegar because of course they do, and it's delicious with the fish. And fries. Heck it was pretty good when I got some on my finger. Service was well practiced with Chris's excellent fishing skills, to a really quick kitchen with perfect food. We have some allergies, and we're told we couldn't make any substitutions, or take anything off( seasoning,etc). I had the salmon, but it comes with Pesto, and I asked to have no pesto, and was told "no". Besides them not being accommodating, it's a beautiful view, but the benches inside could be updated. My son had the steak burger, and seemed to like it, and another gentleman had the lobster Mac and cheese and said it was good. While I know it's a smaller business, I would recommend accommodating the needs of the people. I would have been fine paying extra, to not have pesto on my noodles. I will not be back. read more

We waited about 20 minutes on a Saturday afternoon to be seated on the patio. Well worth it. Inside was pretty empty so we could've been seated right away if we had chose to sit inside. Our server was very customer service friendly. I always appreciate good service! She offered drinks right away and bring them out promptly. As far as the food, it was OK. I have been here on several occasions so its about time I yelp about this place. Located in Blaine its a bit of a drive from Bellingham but well worth the trip. Service have been consistent good. Pro tip-- eat out on their patio deck if you can. Great view of the beach and often you can hear the live music from next door Black Cat Brewery if you are there during the weekend. Food is pricey but you are getting good food and you're paying for the location and view. Dessert is a must if you have room after all the food you eat. Add a wisp of tomato and soggy lettuce to finish it off. Not sure how the bun and lettuce could be so soggy with such a dry burger. Fries were crispy, but bland. Met a few friends for lunch here today. (We initially planned to meet at the Bay Breeze restaurant across the street, but despite its posted hours of operation on its website, it was didn't open until 12 noon. Luckily, CJ's was open at 11:30am). The place was empty when we arrived but was starting to fill up some when we were dining. I gotta say, I loved the they have a humongous parking lot. Even better was the view. Nothing beats a water view. Even despite the pouring rain, it was beautiful. My friends live nearby and eat here a lot, and they say the outdoor patio in the summer is awesome. I can believe it. But even from inside, it was lovely, being right by the water. The interior is very large and has a casual lodge-y vibe. There are cute round tables for two with plush upholstered chairs lining the wall with all the windows facing the bay, and warm wooden booths with benches on the interior. Our server was Todd and he was fantastic! The menu had SO many choices, and all looked good (and my friends attested that everything WAS good), so I told Todd to surprise me with either the Caesar salad with shrimp skewers or the clam chowder. He brought me the chowder. And boy, it was good! I haven't had clam chowder in many years. This isn't the gourmet foodie fusion type of soup you'd get in fancier restaurants, no sir. This is the old-fashioned hearty comfort food you know from your youth. Thick and chock full of clams and potatoes. Very hearty. I ate half and was full. It came with warm crostini bread slices and I couldn't have any of them. This was the real deal. My friends had the "famous" fish and chips. This is the most popular item on their menu and they've had it many times before. The portions are GINORMOUS. My friends admitted, they should have ordered one meal and shared it. They say it's consistently delicious and perfectly cooked, and even the accompanying French fries are crispy and the cole slaw, delicious. Both had to get boxes to take half of their meals home. If I weren't driving a lot today, I definitely would have had one of their cocktails. Their drink selection looked fantastic. We all commented how we'd love to have one of their hot toddy-like cocktails today on such a rainy, dreary day. But alas, that will have to wait until another visit, when we all three weren't driving so much. The prices are on the higher side for such a casual place, but again, the food is great, the service is terrific, the view is lovely, and the meal portions are huge. IMO it's worth it. read more
